I accidentally adopted a kitten recently, she showed up on our doorstep starved near to death. She was really small for being about 4 months old. After we got her properly nourished and spayed she exploded in size. Went from 4lbs to 11lbs in less than 3 months. She's growing more every day, and it's definitely not just fat.
Basically this tiny kitten who we expected to be a normal tabby shoved her way into our house only to reveal her true heritage as a Maine coon. She's eats more than our other two cats combined.

if you found her on the street, then she's not a maine coon. Cats on the streets are not mixes of purebreds like dogs are. An actual pedigree maine coon is big from the get go. When we got ours from the breeders they were 2x the weight of normal sized kittens. And their personality is distinctive. Our pair are far different than the moggie we got from a feral cat colony. Not better, just different. Also weight is not the only indicator of a maine coon. Lots of people claim their obese cats are "part maine coon". MCs are long bodied, fiercely intelligent, and pick up training like it's nothing.

I'll never forget the first Maine Coon I ever met: Fred. Fred laid in the show window of a hardware store in Hillsborough, New Hampshire when the sun was out. At first I thought it was a fake stuffed animal, a HUGE catlike toy. But then Fred yawned. OMG! I went in and spoke with the old man who ran the store. He told me all about his buddy Fred and the Maine Coon breed. What sweet gentle giants they are!

The first time I ever saw a Maine Coon (didn’t even know they existed lol) I was over a friends house for the first time and this huge animal opened the front screen door and let himself in 🤣😅 I was startled bc I had no idea what wild animal had just waltzed into her house. As I picked my jaw up off the floor she says to me “ah don’t worry that’s just my cat” …I said “CAT?!” Lol my mind was genuinely blown at how huge he was and how long and fluffy his tail looked. He was incredibly sweet though and after that I always looked forward to visiting with him.

When I was a child, I lived with my aunt and uncle, and she would feed this cat that was hidden under a office trailer in the middle of an abandoned car dealership. I remember she feed him for a long time and then finally he was comfortable enough to come close and she brought him home. He was edgy, aggressive, and loud. None of the other cats wanted to go near him because of how big he was. Found out from the vet he was a crossbreed with Coon and some other breed I cannot recall. He seemed to have never been well socialized, as he was cautious around everyone and every animal we had and couldn't meow, but he tried and this little squeak like a mouse would come from him. Named him Squeaky. Through many scratches, and bites, and hissing, he finally came trust me and was my biggest buddy for years; sleeping in my bed, joining me for breakfast (Where he knew I'd give him some of my milk and bacon), and guarding my room from other cats or dogs. He died around the age of 13 or so. RIP little buddy.

We adopted a 32 pound Maine coon mix when his previous family moved to a complex that didn't allow pets. Nolan Ryan (aka Nollie) quickly turned into a Mama's boy who shared the bed while hubby worked night shift and stretched out on me in the recliner - with his back paws touching my feet and his front paws hugging my neck. We couldn't leave meals unattended because Nollie would stretch his front paws onto the dining table and scoot plates, pizza boxes, whatever, to the edge and onto the floor. He loved to go outside on a leash and roll in the catnip patch I planted, but would dash into my arms whenever a truck passed by (but cars didn't scare him, go figure. 🤷) Nollie was such a sweet, toddler sized, big baby of a cat and we still miss him dearly some 20 years after he crossed the 🌈🌉. RIP, "Papa Bear Nollie"

My Maine Coon lived to be 19.5 years old, broke my heart when he passed. They don't need to be huge to be a great pet. Aileron was 18 pounds in his prime. He could stand with back feet on the floor and get his nose above the counter top. He always had his place at the dinner table. He would sit and watch us eat and would never beg. One night we were having better cheddar hotdogs (stuffed with cheese) and when I bit into mine it squirted melted cheese into Aileron's face. He calmly cleaned his face at the table and never complained. Don't under estimate the female side of the breed. They are smaller but have every attribute of these fine feline companions.

We have one and a Norwegian Forest cat which is thought to be the bigger ancestral version of a Coone. I'm 6 ft tall and I can spread my arms out as wide as they go while holding him and he's still bigger than that. He is the most enormous cat I have ever personally seen up close. Also, one of the coolest cats I've ever come in contact with. My son found him in a forest (NW WA), somehow abandoned by his mother as a kitten and all alone and I realized very quickly as I had previously done cat rescue that this was NOT a domesticated species of cat. He acts like a dog, follows my son everywhere and patrols our property like it's his job. I've seen him stand up to deers and anything else that comes our way. These are truly amazing cats, both breeds. You better buy a lot of food though, and oftentimes they're not meant to be kept only inside. They really enjoy going outside. Our Norwegian I call our mini Bob for bobcat, He's about 22 lb right now and not done growing and he makes our Maine Coon look small in comparison.

I think at some point my dad had a cat, it was very huge. People mistook it for a mid-sized dog or something. Currently now we have a tabby cat, which is also a bit bigger than normal tabby cats. I've seen it for myself, my dad loves animals. When he has an animal, he believes it is a big sin not to take care of your animal, and that it's life is in your hands. He would never go without a day with taking care of it. When our cat goes to my dad when he's asleep, my dad gets up almost instantly to go prepare its needs. Our cat literally follows my dad around lol, like once he went outside to walk around the block, and the cat followed him around the entire time. Like stuck onto him. When he returns home, takes a seat or something, the cat lays on his lap. OH! Forgot to mention his name, our cat's name is Masood. He's 4 years old. When my dad has an animal under his care, he believes he should take care of right until the day it dies of old age, with love and affection.

I own one. In fact, my pfp is of him. He's turning 18 this year had him since I was a toddler. More loyal than my dog. A great heater in the winter. Super calm and chill. Low maintenance. He gets along with all people. Never bit or scratched anyone. He used to be quite big. Somewhere in the mid 20lbs to slightly over 30lbs in his prime. And it was mostly muscle, not much fat. He used to be super stocky. But now in his old age, he can't jump anymore and has lost quite a bit of weight. If he wants to lay on the couch with me I have to pick him up, and if he wants to be on the ground I have to put him down (I do it without complaint, hes worth it). Other than that, he is still pretty healthy though, will follow me around the house like my shadow. I can't speak for all main coon owners. But, at least from my experience growing up with one, they are a joy to have around the house for the family. Never once had an issue with him.
The only thing you gotta watch out for is the long hair. It gets everywhere and needs to be brushed regularly.

He's probably about 22 lb and not done growing and I could spread my arms out the entire length of them while I'm holding him and he's still bigger than that. And I'm like 6 ft tall so I'm pretty good with my arm length. We call him our mini Bob for bobcat. He is unlike anything we've ever encountered and I did cat rescue so I've seen probably 200 cats come through my care, many of which were feral or non-domesticated. This one truly is one of a kind. Our Maine Coon looks tiny compared to him. Let me put it that way.

I had an 18 lb Tabby that was lean.....he could have easily pushed 25 lbs had I let him get that big.He talked and patrolled and fetched and sat and shook his paws, and he did not meow for about 7-8 years and then it was merks and attempts at words not meows .When I saved him from executioner as a kitten there was a massive Orange and white short haired calico mixed breed at the Vet that was at least 30 lbs and around 2 feet tall sitting down.I could pat his head sitting in a chair it did not look Maine Coonish at all.

I just LOVE the unique names of these beautiful felines. My coon cat named Milo weighed 18 lbs. lived to age 15. We used to take him to the pet store on a leash. Dogs were afraid of him. He loved everyone he came in contact with, and would wrap his legs and paws around their necks for hugs. The most outgoing cat I have ever had.

my childhood cats are part Maine Coon. Tora liked hunting and would bring me a squirrel tail or a bird, meanwhile her sister Kiri is just a very chill and sweet cat. She puts her arms around my neck when I pick her up like she's hugging me. Tora now has what I can only guess is feline dementia if that's a thing as she just slowly roams around looking wide-eyed and doesn't seem to recognize me anymore but Kiri is still the same as she's always been. They're about 17 years old.

I lost my Cricket in 2013; my vet thought she might have been part Maine Coon, though much smaller than these record-setters! I didn't know much about this breed until after getting hooked on a "cozy" mystery novel series by Miranda James (Cat in the Stacks series) which featured a Maine Coon named Diesel. The first one I read was "No Cats Allowed", which I got for 50 cents at a library used-book sale. After finishing it, I headed to a bookstore and began buying the books in order! And I started googling Maine Coons to learn even more. I'd love to meet one in person one day, but there's no way I could properly care for one myself. Kudos to all the Maine-owned humans who do so much for these magnificent beauties!!! 😺💕🐾

@@eikoqdupree101 Certain elements & characters are amusing, but it (&the series as a whole) is written as a murder mystery, rather than comedy per se. The series is character driven, with Charlie (a university librarian) & his cat Diesel solving mysteries, while new characters enter their lives (some of whom stay for future novels, while others come&go &/or die!). You can read them in any order, but the series makes more sense if you start with the first book (where Charlie finds a stray "cat" who turns out to be a Maine Coon kitten). Diesel grows up to be a VERY large Coon and is well known in their hometown. 😺 You can Google the Cat in the Stacks series books IN ORDER to check out all the titles. Have FUN! 😺💕🐾

He would sit behind the large plastic bin full of cat food and crunch down on it's lid and bite it. He would flip that lid onto the floor, then dip his head into the bountiful amount of heavenly scented kittykat crunchies that lay before him. So he would eat. And eat. Eat some more. A great perk of these giant fluffy loveable furballs is that because they're adapted to the cold and sometimes harsh climates in Maine, they are great at helping to keep ya warm in the winter! They tend to be a loving and loveable breed, I've met and had many who just love to come curl up with ya, especially on cold nights, although it can be less welcomed in the summer when it's hot. I used to leave my bedroom door cracked open just a bit for my fluffy little guy, because he liked to take turns sleeping in everyones bed.

I had a maine coon. 18lbs of wonderful.
They are very people oriented. they follow you from room to room just to be close.
His favorite place was my keyboard when I was trying to use it. Couldn't get mad at him. He just thought you would rather be loving on him.

I always wanted one!!! I love cats so much!!!! I have a Calico cat and she’s an awkward size cat, she doesn’t fit into small or medium collars or fit in the right kindle. All the cats i met were bigger than her. My baby Luna is 10. She’s very social cat and she’s not mean. I thought calicos were feisty. 😂 My cat is the lord of Sass.

Aww that's a cute name for your kitten, my husband surprised me with a Maine coon kitten yesterday he said it's my early Christmas present, I named mine Jackson but for short I will call him Jax , my kitten is very small yet but I am sure he is going to grow up and be big he has big paw's for such a little dude , what kind of hair brush is best to use for a Maine coon kitten, my kitten is a tabby colored kitten,he's still scared yet but he is so sweet he just lays in my arms and purrs away, but when I put him down he runs and hides under Neath my couch ,how long does it normally take for a new kitten to adjust and get settled in,I'm so attached to him already,he is so sweet

I have a 21lb Siberian Forest Cat named Riley, we thought he was a Maine Coon for a long time because of his size and fluff, he’s such a good natured cat that anyone can pet his belly or hold him, however he only shows affection to me and my mom, he’s also really smart and SO LOUD it’s obnoxious haha 😅

My Maine Coon, Beau, was a giant skinny cat. Even though he was fur and bones, he weighed 24 pounds in his prime. I had to put him to sleep right before the COVID lock down, two months before he would have turned 20, and I still miss him terribly.

My son's cat Mikey was 32 pounds of solid muscle. His sister Mini was 5 1/2 pounds (thus the name Mini). When he got them, they were both tiny.

My neices and nephews gave me a cat they named Freckle. We eat sardines and smoked oysters together, a little salmon, and he's a great hunter. Just last week he caught a rat outside the cabin that was almost as big as he. I've only had dogs, and believe it or not, it's a little difficult, but a person can dang well train a cat. When I snap my fingers and do other other hand signals he responds just like my German Shepherds used to. Hopefully he keeps the snakes at bay here by the creek. I heard hunting outdoors is more difficult, but he is always leaving me trophies on the patio (beheaded). He's still not fully grown, but the sardine heavy diet has made an awesome coat on him and some real buffness. Perfect inside outside cat. People can rag doll him all they want and he stays well tempered. When I come in from work he does flip flops and somersaults at my feet, always happy to let into the ac. In the winter, he sleeps under my chin on my chest like a scarf, keeping my neck warm. When you pet him, he pets back, with both paws. It's friggin cute. Watch out tho, when he sleeps by your feet he will wake you up as soon as u begin to stir by tackling your ankle if it moves. Somehow my cat stays virtually free of fleas without medicine or a collar. The guy gives himself good baths I guess, idk

I just LOVE BIG ass cats...❤❤😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻 they are like having a mini lion in the house .. I have 2 rescues, 1 is normal in size , the other a dwarf Siamese that was found abandoned in a box. I so hate when a humanoid abandons a helpless animal 😾😾😾 ...my father brought her home, so TINY, w/ legs like twigs, but very talkative, I love them both very very much. 😺😺😸😸😻 Cats are the most perfect of animals, a quote by the master himself who was known to own many cats, Leonardo Da Vinci..😻😻😻 Oh, if only Leonardo could have seen some of THESE gorgeous GIANTS, I bet he would have painted THEM instead of Mona Lisa !!!😻😻😻😻😻

if you feed a kitten raw calf liver (produces s lot of natural grow th hormones) any kitten will grow to a maincoon size. And the kitten will love that fresh meat

@@Iiwii11 i saw maincoons who where relative small, because their breeders didn't care much for the size. In case you use the calf liver trick, even a main coon mix will become a gigant. Just keep it in mind once you get one ;)
