Thank you for this informative video! ❤
I'd like to add to the fur issue - yes, they might get stressed if their fur becomes knotted, but remember: cats lick themselves regularly, and when that involves so much fur, it might lead to a bowel obstruction. My maine coon had to undergo two abdominal surgeries, even though we brush her regularly.

I got my Main Coon at a shelter. I had him for 20 years. He was a smart cat who wanted to take a walk with me every evening. He patiently waited for me at the door until I was ready to walk with him. He definitely understood english. We would walk together and he would hapily trot ahead of me holding his tail in the air. He was an indor/outdor cat and lived a hapy life with me and my family.

We managed to get a MC male from the SPCA. He had been returned twice and was very shy, shy enough that the ladies at the shelter thought he would not be rehomed. I sat with him and put my hand inside the cage and eventually he came out from hiding and sniffed at my hand. He has been with us for several years now and exhibits pretty much all these traits and follows my wife around, coming to get her if he wants company. He is by far the sweetest and smartest cat we have ever had and is a joy to have around. We are retired so there is always someone around if he gets lonesome. We have a backyard and he will hunt there for hours. Oddly he never leaves the yard and comes when called. He will also indicate what kind of food he wants by his posture and has the sweetest trills to come from an animal. We absolutely adore him and he is such a gentleman. Also he will come and get us to groom him or if he wants attention he will flop on the diningroom floor and wait for one of us. Charming to say the least.

The Maine Coon mix I got from a shelter a few months ago is the joy of my life. He learns a lot of words quickly. Has not bit or scratched me on purpose. Cautious to experience new things but with time gradually accepts change. Enjoys being around other people who have quiet, gentile personalities. He's quite verbal. Is chill 70% of the time and plays like a cat on fire the rest of the time. Strings and balls cannot be beat by any mechanical toy. Cat TV rocks. This little gentleman respects property and doesn't damage any of it. The happier he is the more he bathes. Shedding? HUGE. Most of it is in clumps which is easy to spot and pick up. With hairball food it's not been a problem for him. He has long, heavy outer coat and a downy undercoat which does most of the shedding mostly while playing. There are many products which help a lot to control and clean shedding.

You're teasing those cats. They can see the birds but not hunt them. I'm a bird lover though so I get it. I'm also a cat lover. I had a declawed cat (my mother declawed him NOT me) who still used to kill birds even without claws. It was a orange tabby that acted like a Maine Coon and hunted and took walks with me until he was unfortunately hit by a car at age 13. He was my best cat and so healthy even at 13 he played like a kitten. Maybe I will try a Maine Coon but my cats are indoor cats now after losing three to the road.

Back in 2001 an large older male cat wandered up to me on our farm! He was skinny and needed to eat so I gave him a bowl of food and some fresh water. He had an obvious puss filed wound on his forehead. We cleaned it and put some antibiotic paste on it that we have on hand for cattle and goats. This seemed to start healing it. However it became bad again so we took him to our farm vet who cleaned it and packed it with something that really worked well. We had started letting him in and he liked to be inside. He was a great cat and it was amazing how he used his apposing thumb. He was with us for about ten years but one day he didn’t come home. Since was getting a little feeble we think he died somewhere. We still miss him.

On two separate occasions I was chosen to be owned by Maine Coons, both females. One a kitten was a gift from close friends, mixed 1/2 - 1/2 purebred and the other was a purebred older rescue whose elderly female owner had passed. Their nickname "Gentle Giant" does apply as they were the sweetest cats ever! The video is correct as they do require "Fur" maintenance, mine loved water, baths, and would walk right into the shower with me. They loved to just splash in the water and enjoyed being blow dried (warning: low heat only!) afterwards. They followed me everywhere and were highly inquisitive as well as intelligent! The first one loved music and would melt into my lap with a Rod Stewart CD playing the other loved to watch cartoons and nature shows on TV. This video brought out a lot of fond memories but in closing sadly the video is correct as both of my babies died from diseases one a very rare and hard to diagnose diabetes at 15 and the other from kidney cancer at 13.

I've had quite a number of cats over the years, the one thing that killed most of them was kidney cancer. Seems to be becoming more and more popular as a cause of death for some reason (my theory is modern cat food). My maine coon died from that , her sister died from diabetes both at 18 years, but my long hair also died from kidney cancer a year before my maine coon did and the year before that a friend's Norwegian forest cat died from the same thing. Seems to be very common now unfortunately.

I have had the privilege of meeting two Pedigree Maine Coons when taking a friend to the groomers with her elderly, long-haired Persian (sadly no longer with us). They were huge and beautiful. I also had the privilege of having a half-Maine Coon in my house overnight when I used to help with cat rescue. Turned out his owners were on holiday, neighbours had been going in to feed him etc., and he escaped and got himself lost. He was also huge but very laid back. He was reunited the next day thanks to his microchip. All my cats are moggies but one has some of the characteristics of having Maine Coon somewhere in him. He is 1/3rd larger than my second biggest cat, has ear tufts, tufts between his paws and even though he would be classed as short hair, his fur is longer than our other cats, dense and silky soft. He is also super friendly. Maine Coons are lovely cats but, as you said, not for everyone. Great commonsense video.

I had a half or so Maine Coon cat for 16 wonderful yrs. Marble was my best friend, the most talkative, understanding cat I ever had. I woke up one morning with acute rheumatoid arthritis, very painful. Took mos. to get to specialist. One AM I woke up in great pain, made it to chair in living rm where I could see her having breakfast. I was tired & in pain & I sat there & cried my hardest. She walked past me having finished eating & said "murp" which I heard as "follow me". I did & she led me to bedroom, jumped up on bed, laid down & purred. I laid beside her & cried & talked 'til I was cried & talked out. Then she got up & left. I felt so much better. She was a wonderful cat. We talked & bickered & I miss her still, big, beautiful, muted calico .

You were wrong on every point except #6, they are expensive. It sounds like you had a bad experience with a MC. They are the friendliest most welcoming cats. I frequently have people over and they wait by the door and/or look out the window for them. Mine walk on a leash and enjoy car rides. With 3 people in the house they will have a favorite, as will any cat or dog, but they give attention to everyone. My first one used to visit retirement communities and hospitals. He loved seeing everyone. My current one begs at the door to visit others and dogs. We live in a small apartment with no issues. Loved by MCs for 23 years.

I adopted my first Maine Coon 12 years ago.
Before I had "normal" housecats over decades.
Since I had the first Coonie I only adopt Coonies 💖😊💖.
They have special characters. They are more like dogs.
Our three MC wait at the door when somebody is coming home and they jump around like dogs when they are happy.
They are very calm and relaxed and accept everybody and everything.
They have their number one person but they spread their love to the complete family.
My Coonies don't hunt anything they are just playing and after a while they let their toy go 😅.
Grooming is very important cause their fur will tangle if you don't groom.
They are huge smart beautiful cats and very funny.
Our Coonies built strong bonds with us more than the most other cats...
They are adorable companions and I don't want to miss them anymore 💝

We LOVE Maine Coons!!! You'vve got THAT right: they attach to ONE person in the household! We had our gorgeous black smoke and white tuxedo marking Maine Coon - he showed up here over the mountain, and lived indoors with us for 16 years- we guess he was around three when he showed up here. He was SO INTELLIGENT. This cat was UNREAL! I mean EXTREMELY smart- we would ask ourselves HOW did he figure THAT out?! He repeatedly showed us HE was the King of his castle! NOT us! :P! I cried more than for relatives when he died. We don't know what happened to him we think he had a stroke- he was totally indoors as we didn't want him to get killed on the road. WE LOVE him still, RIP our Shawnee.... we would ALWAYS have a Miane Coon if God blesses us with one.

    # Note on PREVENTING knots and matting. { True for all med > long haired cats - and dogs too! ) Really important to groom and prevent this. When knots develop they increasingly draw the SKIN Into the matt, so you can't just snip them off, and the knots are also painful for your pet. If it gets that bad your cat needs to go to a Professional Cat Groomer, and if they've never been, since kittenhood, then the Groomer may not be able to handle / restrain them to do the job. It's not uncommon for badly matted cats to have to go to the Vet and have it done under anaesthetic. That's traumatic to the cat as well as your wallet!

Yes, I have 3 hybrid MCoon/Tortoshell being the father a MC. They at 4 weeks already bonded to me like puppies of running towards you asap. They have not start eating yet and only 1 is eating now. Yes, they are SERIOUS CLIMBERS and already climbing a 5 foot cat tree besides balancing themselves on the top of the tube tunnels. The kittens all have the dominate MC genes as they all have bigger than normal PAWS. This is the week the kittens start accelerating their size along with extra coat growth. Not sure how they will grow out being hybrids but their large paws distinctive as well as their dog like IQ of their personality. Never had a MC with this being a HYBRID litter, I'm already impressed by their personalities and keeping 2of them. Giving away one to a dear friend who influenced me to have cats.

My neighbor just informed me his Main Coon ( father of my 3 kittens) is part Bengal and reasons two of them have the distinctive stripes patterns. I find mixed cats to be very awesome if you have a good combo of genes. Gives kittens variety of genetics of traits. Example is , the smallest one (Silver Metalic with black stripes) has the paws, the whiskers and just beginning to fuzz out 2nd coat of MCoon, stripes from Bengal but she is small and likely be a Mini Coon once her 2nd coat grows out. The male is BIG ( Black with orange stripes and dots)of all the MCoon traits but looking like his coat not going to grow out , his stripes from Bengal and likely hair. The 2nd female is her mom, a Tortoshell ( Tri colored black, specs of orange, brown) but big with short hair. Not full MCoon but an awesome combination of genes of a mixed breed with Bengal.

Attaching to only one person isn’t true, at least for not all MCs. I had one for 15 years and while he chose me as his favorite person and didn’t like my spouse at the time, he adored many other people outside of our household. Tells mostly about my ex, not about the cat. Also, this video forgot to mention that they can be messy. Messy eaters and get poop in their backside or paws. They try hard to not mess with poop but accidents happen. Key is to trim the trousers and underside of the tail. Trimming the toe feathers is good for cleanliness (to not spread litter everywhere) and grip on slippery surfaces. They can also be loud and chatty, which can be annoying for some people. Brushing can be a challenge, if they are sensitive. I got my MC from a respectable breeder but I think she didn’t teach him for brushing very well. And they are heavy, big cats. Besides climbing tree, they also need a bigger litter box and carrier. Luckily now there are more good options for big cats than when I had mine. That being said, they are still the best feline creatures walking this earth.

His coat is beautiful. He gets sick twice a year, and the vet bill is expensive. He loves food puzzles, for small dogs. He is very busy, and gets naughty to my senior cat, and is in time out a lot. Most of it is true, they are expensive, even when you have them home, you need to give them good food, take care of their furr and teeth, they get bored easily if you use the same toy, but you actually dont need a lot of space to get a Maine Coon. They are so close to their human that they are never further than 2 meters. So you dont need a Villa, even with a studio they will just stay by your side. Very interesting indeed.
I believe one of my cats is half Maine Coon... His mother was a shot hair street cat, but he has lots of Maine Coon traits. He's pretty long (the space between his back and front lags is much bigger than with my other cats), his tail is as long (or perhaps longer)... He's not so furry as a Maine Coon, but given his mother... And he acts a LOT like a dog, even coming down from the roof, meowing, when I call him.
Either way, I think he's perfect for me. He's probably not going to be that big (although he's already bigger than the others with 1 year), it's REALLY hot here where I live (I'm from Brazil and it's a beach city, so)... And, as he's mixed, perhaps he won't be that susceptible to those diseases (I guess).
Anyway, depending on how big he gets I'm probably going to test his DNA. We shall see. And if you can get a cat like what I'm describing, do not miss it. Definitely!
(BTW, he's more connected to me, that's true, but he's a sweetheart to everyone - even to my other cats!)

Thank you! We find your video to be spot on and helpful in educating us to know Maine Coon cat breed traits. You helped us identify ours. Though believe me, she had already educated us, we just didn’t know for sure that she IS a Maine Coon. We just thought she might be because of her size and beautiful long fur, she just looks like a Maine Coon… Now we are convinced she is, but because she is a “tuxedo” we guess she must be a mixed breed. Two years ago my granddaughter was thrilled to adopt from the Animal Shelter a very beautiful black and white long haired large cat who was “over a year old” and was kept in the shelter longer than usual because the poor cat had bitten an attendant. When we brought her home she was shy. She adores my granddaughter and Wants To Be With Her and Only Her. Sweetie barely has the time of day for my grandson or me, unless we will be patient enough for her to decide if she wants to finally go through the door when she’s asked us to open it for her- or if we are offering her meal or a treat. Otherwise “nuh uh.” Additionally, this dear to us cat has all the other traits as well, excepting, so far thank goodness, the serious health issues. We are so grateful to have found her and have her join our family. Again, thank you.

I trained her to hack up her fur balls on the linoleum rather than the rugs. I had her from a kitten, for 11 years, before she died of a tumor. She was the dearest cat and I miss her. ❤

Bathing is NOT enjoyed by most cats so a cranky expression is not unusual.

My first MC would sit with me when I played the piano. I had the bench offset to the keyboard so that there was (almost) enough room for him to curl up. When he wanted to stretch out he would lay by the pedals (small grand piano). Unlike my Siamese he stayed out of the carcass and did not attack hammers. Piano time was his time to be close. I miss his company and unique MC conversational chirps.

They are not lap cats for sure. When they want pettting, they will lay next to you or grab you when you walk by. The tolerate being held for a short time. Unless they are in an unknown place. Then they want you to hold them. They are very playful and mischievous. They are absolutely wonderful cats.

The best thing about a Maine Coon is... their incredible vocals - "Midnight, not a sound from the pavement? Has the moon lost her memory, she is smiling alone. In the lamplight, the withered leaves collect at my feet, and the wind begins to moan"

I have a Maine Coon from a shelter.
    He's 14 1/4 years old & very sweet.
He grooms his longhaired furry cat housemate & me as well.

So many issues with these "reasons" They're no more expensive than many other purebreds and much cheaper from a rescue or shelter. Ours loves a good box more than their cat tower or any other toy. She doesn't eat more than our other rescues. She does get under foot because she likes being around us. While she likes me the most and loves my lap, she'll spend time with the rest of the family at times too. She's never been skittish, and is quite chill. Is very calm, even with small kids around. She's never meanly scratched anyone in our family, just pawed them when they did something wrong. She does play from time to time, but sure as heck is Not a kitten at 4.

A cat's inability to stop-itself from attacking moving bed sheets, is simply hilarious to observe !! 🤨🤯😳😁🤣👍🏻

Thought MC was born in my house, but it’s A Norwegian Forest tabby, growing up twice his mom’s size in 1 1/2 yrs… I’ve had a lot of cats & this guy is top of the line, beautiful Comb him everyday & he loves it! Scolds me if I walk away from the house, but is fine if I take the bus knows I’ll be back, but walk around to the dumpster he sits on the hill & lets me know he’s watching! Wish I could send a pic of him…he would have won 1st prize at any show💞💓🙋‍♀️
