  • Natalia Makarova's production of this 19th-century classic ballet brings an exotic world of temple dancers and noble warriors to life. The Royal Ballet discuss their experience of rehearsing and performing in La Bayadère.
    An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadère was originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877, and was regularly performed within the former Soviet Union throughout the 20th century. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the Kingdom of the Shades scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova saw La Bayadère as a child in Leningrad and created this production in 1980. It was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989.
    The ballet contains roles of very different styles for two ballerinas in Nikiya and Gamzatti, a spectacular virtuoso solo for the Bronze Idol, and stunning pas de deux for Solor with both Nikiya and Gamzatti.

    I just wanted to say that I love the fact that Natalia (Osipova) shared her perspective on (the character) Gamzati, in her mother tongue. I don't know, but as someone learning another language in my new homeland, I imagine that it might otherwise be more difficult to capture what was in her heart about the role, (I mean, conversely, maybe her English is better than mine, I don't know..lol). Ballet is often seen as an elitist art form (til now, that's been fair criticism) - so I love to see the diversity in the RB dancer's backgrounds, language and culture being honoured.

    I find him fitting perfectly with Marianela. Everything looks so perfect...and I missed it unfortunately. I will be very angry if this production doesn’t become a dvd.

      Tell your classmates to give it a rest. The world of La Bayadere never existed, except in the fanciful imaginations of 19th century romantic artists and writers. La Bayadere isn’t about cultural appropriation. It’s about bringing to the stage, what white Europeans merely imagined nineteenth century, Raj India to be like. During the Romantic era, very, very few white Europeans had ever even been to India. None of La Bayader was ever intended to be a realistic depiction of anything, just the theatrical renderings of whatever fanciful, artsy nineteenth century European white people might imagine. That’s all.

      No I mean, do they not have POC in the Russian ballet? Can they not let POC do the stories that are about POC?
      I'm genuinely curious because there is so much discrimination in the dance world as is, and I thought I remembered hearing thag Russia wa sespecially bad but I'm not sure

    • @nimkati5627
      @nimkati5627 4 года назад +6

      @@mikaylahealey8045 Russia's idea of race is very different from that of the Anglosphere. They don't have the same racial categorization and tend to think in terms of ethnicities instead. An ethnic Russian is different from both Indians and the French. Why can they play French characters, but not Indian ones? Because Indians look different or have a different culture? But so do the French.
      See, Eastern Europe has a different history and social dynamics from ex-colonial societies. We see that different people have a different skin colour, but we don't really understand why it makes them a different race.

    • @nazianquadir
      @nazianquadir 4 года назад +8

      As an Indian ballet student, I've spent a while thinking about this. I think that at the end of the day, it's really just people playing characters in a ballet that happens to be set in India. Sure it would be great to see POC cast, but I think the story comes first in this ballet, and the race isn't as important as the dancing

    • @c0ronariu5
      @c0ronariu5 10 месяцев назад

      I agree. It’s a story made up by Petipa and minkus, based on orientalism. It’s got no basis in history or actual south Asian culture; only what two Europeans “assumed” India would be like and strung a bunch of stereotypes together. Even the characters’ names are a joke.

  • @mrlopez-pz7pu

    The Royal Ballet needs to drop this Makarova production (and so does everyone else who has it). Ironically, it is more dated and ethnographically inaccurate regarding costumes and décor than Marius Petipa's original productions of 1877 and especially his last revival of 1900. The Makarova version uses John Lanchbery's redacted and heavily reorchestrated edition of Minkus's score. 🤮
