Why can't we have a boat like this in the US? This is pure genius at work the whole hybrid idea is wonderful in every sense of the word..! This is everything a liverboard person would want and I'm sure it is worth the asking price
US is still in the consume as much as possible phase. No reason you could not retro fit. Running a generator for an hour to get 5 hours of silent cruising is a bargain.......if you use it enough, otherwise, just more green-washing.
$50k - $80K for deliveries to USA it’s quite simple. I have purchased boats in The Netherlands for USA delivery numerous times and recently sent a boat to the Philippines.
Hi Hugo. A sturdy seaworthy boat. Very practical, all weather cruiser. Acres of storage, hybrid technology for silent rechargeable propulsion. This has absolutely everything and British built craftsmanship. Great walkthrough video tour thanks 😊
A proper boat and then some. Hardy's are a different level. Great walkthrough Hugo. Cheers for that. However, you failed to notice or just point out the seamless transition of the grain in the veneers throughout the vessel. Every cupboard, drawer etc. Shocking oversight on your part. I shall write to my MP... 😀
As always, a great video, you have a great way of showing boats. I was particularly interested in the fact they're going to go through the waterways of Europe, I've been trying to research how low the bridges are, if you want to get all the way down to the med, but this is proofing very difficult. Appreciate this is slightly off-topic, but if you've got any advice I'm all ears.
Very thorough tour Hugo. I like how the side cleats are mounted out of the way of toes and shins, so many boat builders miss the mark on that one! As for that being a "domestic" sized refrigerator/freezer, only if you DON'T plan on stocking up for a week or so!
@@hugoandreae3785 I partially figured it might be a European/British "thing". Over on _this_ side of the pond the appliances are usually quite a bit larger LOL
From time to time I like to visit the Cockwells website and drool over the Duchy 21 but I had no idea that they had bought Hardy. This vid had me daydreaming of crossing over to Norway and cruising the Fjords on this beautiful boat. Thanks Hugo, this vid was pure escapism. 👍❤️🇬🇧
Very well designed cruiser...I can see myself living aboard quite comfortably. however there are a few things I'd change.. the top of the cabin doors @5:40 looks like it could do some damage should you slip or fall on them...the middle seat next to the pilot chair @10:53 could use a rail about elbow height at the right ..that's a fairly high fall if a heavy sea pitched you to the right over the woodwork and for a boat with all that storage and ability to long distance cruise that fridge/freezer combo is too small..
@@hugoandreae3495 yes - it's just that normally a single joystick is for ips or dph drives. It's usually a pair of small joysticks for the thrusters. You should do a vid on the different types of joysticks as it makes a huge difference. Especially measuring actual sideways thrust against current somewhere like Dartmouth!
Really, my only question is, are any access hatches? Diff topic: The hidden TV is deployed manually ‘nothing electric, nothings going to fail.’ Yet the dining table is on an electric lift. I’d prefer to take the risk, like with the dining table, and have the TV on an electric lift. Also, a larger TV than the small computer monitor which manually drops down from the ceiling.
Why do the openings of those ventilation pipes on the front deck (just ahead of the windows) face forward? Can't surf/splash get in if the openings face forward?
I imagine it's to allow the vents to capture air when underway, like forced induction. I also assume there's some protection from spray measure inside the tubes, or that it's just not an issue for this hull.
@@markegg7680 They have sensors, so if spray is detected they twist out of the way real quick. Just kidding. It's either just flat NOT an issue for this hull, or perhaps there's something inside the tubes that channels water (if any) to the pipes in the heads compartment. What isn't true is that you've discovered a latent design defect that will bankrupt the company.
Why didn't they install a couple of OceanVolt electric drives and go diesel / electric? Put a generator on the engine and have no mechanical connection between the engine and the props. Run off batteries if you like, or engine, your choice.
Lovely boat Hugo 🙂……. right up my stream…… I would try to get the galley up to the saloon opposite the dinette and try to squeeze a two bunk cabin in its place…… but I’m just greedy…… 🙂🇬🇧
That is a very handsome boat - I'd love one but not a hybrid.....I'm pleased that Hardy's have been taken over by Cockwells - it would be shae to lose another British brand....that's a great video Hugo....
Love the sturdy no nonsense ethos of this vessel. I would be interested to know what the range would be just using the electric motor and generator cruising at 6 knots? Could It it possibly go 1500 miles or more?
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that but I'm sure Hardy Motoryachts would be happy to let you know. You can contact them using this web address: cockwells.co.uk/contact/
Looks very nice but such a limited range, would have expected at least 1,000 miles on the engine. Don't like the galley either, no fiddle rails or pan clamps on the hob, it would be OK for the inland waterways but definitely not rough seas. The food storage is terrible, a minute freezer and such a tiny fridge. Very well built though.
I would happily give up sailing for a motor yacht like this. I am getting to old for no wind, too much wind or a perfect wind but in the wrong direction. Cruise the canals down to the med via a few vinyards, oh to dream. Come on Lotto it must be my turn. Any chance of seeing a sea trial?
Wouldnt the diesel running at 6knts be just as environmentally friendly as the generator running the hybrid system at 6 knts? I can see how for the first two hours when you leave the dock after having topped up the batteries from shore power, that could in theory be better for the environment. But once you go beyond those 12 nautical miles and need to turn on the generator top up the batteries again, then its hard to see much gain from the system. That hybrid system seems like a lot of added complication and cost for not much gain, unless you happen to have a use scenario where you are frequently going to take trips that are 12nm or less and don’t mind doing that at 6knts. Or am I missing something? Don’t get me wrong, I love the boat other than the hybrid aspect. I know thats the future and look forward to it, but i think this implementation shows that the technology just isn’t ripe yet for this sort of vessel.
My understanding is that it would use less fuel as it’s a smaller Diesel engine running at peak efficiency rather than a big Diesel engine running well below its peak efficiency. It’s also not good for the engine itself to run for long periods at low revs
on the contrary, the idea is excellent its execution is just not all the way. This boat needs two larger electric motors of about 100kW each, that would save a lot of space by not luggin that massive engine around, a larger generator, give up most of the flybridge for a solar panel deck, and then use all the space saved by getting rid of the engine for more batteries. as it is now it's just half way tranisitioned to electric drive, but running the generator for up to 6 knots is a lot more efficient than running the large engine at low revs, since the generator will always be running at it's maximum efficiency RPM, whilst the engine won't.
what about a couple 25 hp Yanmars running generators for redundancy and having even more lithium Ion batteries...? No need for the big diesel.... If you need a few miles of full power/ higher speed , run both small engines at top rpm and draw off the batteries....
i dont like the dining table, the washer/dryer combos arent good when one goes bad you have to replace them both, you could turn the v berth into a laundry room for both a washer and dryer, then that way you could have a bigger frig/freezer
With the electric motor. If they were smart they would go one of 2 ways when using the engine. Either disengage the electric motor and let it free spin which is wasted potential energy, of use the spinning regenerate the batteries.
i'd rather have a nordhaven 41 , better range , better freezer and fridge , dual engines and a lot cheaper . it's a nice boat but 1,300,000 us dollars base price seems a bit spendy to me !
Did they use the batteries from a BMW i3 as well? Seems like every electric boat has either the battery, or the battery an engine from an i3. I imagine since BMW is such garbage, the cars fell apart and were junk but somehow the battery and engine were still good.
