I started my watercress seeds indoors this winter in three inch net cups filled with expanded clay pebbles in Folgers Instant coffee containers. I mixed two of the small scoops of MaxiGro nutrients in a gallon jug of water and filled the coffee container up to just below the top of the clay pebbles and put it under a 10w full spectrum bulb. If you leave the light on 24/7 it grows fast and and makes seeds sooner. I paid a lot for a very tiny amount of seeds so I only started out by sprinkling about 7 seeds on the damp pebbles. They grew. I moved three cuttings to other growers. I was harvesting some as a real vit C supplement and noticed flowers and stopped.
We can`t buy watercress to eat in my region of Louisiana so I decided to grow it. I live on a rural lot and last year during the extreme drought I had to help the wild animals and reptiles here and made the frogs a puddle after I noticed they were putting eggs in a water bowl I put beside my garden for a bunny with a nest nearby. So in warm weather I`ll put watercress in the puddle. I allowed Bunny to eat from my garden because there was very little else and she likes green beans and I have plenty of seeds. Looks like I`m about to lose my winter greens again to extreme cold. I covered my fig tree with leaves, straw, grass clippings, and a big plastic barrel. I`m putting warm bulbs under the barrel once the temps get past 25f and I`m gonna cover my giant mustard with my greenhouse plastic. I want the mustard to make a few pounds of seeds and the bees love the blooms. But it can only survive down to 15f and we`re expecting single digits here.

You are so kind to help the wild life, thank you for that. Yes I think it is a good idea to cover up as much as possible in those low temperatures 🙂
