Riot provided EWC all the technologies and anything they needed to run the competition smooth. LEC is the only place that 'boy cotted' EWC which failed. Replacing MSI to EWC is good for Riot because they can save money for the Worlds. This was possible because vieweship was good enough this time. So without Faker, it wouldn't worked out

The main issue, imo, with the Bardinette strat is the amount of resources that’s being allocated on both sides due to their perma roam playstyle. Low elos tend to not capitalize on something as big as this or even straight up unaware that the top can free farm or the top lane can simply choke in crucial moments. Masters+ seems way harder to do in considering the minute details that Master players have to where they just shut their brain off because it’s to be expected of them and they can use their brain power to focus on something else. I do think it can be changed in a way to make it better (like actually CSing but maybe have longer roams.)

First and foremost it was Riot that decided the format. They forced EWC to use the old MSI format.
Second the cash prize pool is 1M; 400K to the champion while MSI merely has 65K for the champion and Worlds has 445k for the Champion. You see how much money that is? Wrap your head around it.
Third EWC is a congregation of different E-sports that had high Prize pools. Main E-Sports themed games were invited to play it. Think of it as something like FIBA or Olympics solely for Esports. Just because Riot forced EWC to turn the format into that. That doesn't weaken EWC as other games running alongside LoL had world level prizepools
Fouth there is a E-sports Club competition where the Clubs that becomes champions in their game gets a load of points and the winner for that gets 3M. Anyone who wins the LoL eSports Tourney would give their club a load of points (1000). Currently Team Falcons is leading followed by T1, FNC, TES and TL... See that over there? 4 of the top 5 teams in Club standing all have LoL teams.
Fifth does anyone really think for a second that the players or the clubs consider it as a Mickey Mouse event? Think of how much money, prestige and untapped sponsors they can get in winning that tournament.

      1. EWC format wasn´t the old MSI format, old MSI format was a group stage with top 4 advancing in a playoff bracket, this was just a 8 team bracket.
      2. Both MSI and Worlds get more money than that because part of the sales of skins and battlepasses are added to the pricepool.
and to your 5th point it still was a Mickey Mouse event because of the format and players saying that they care more about regular season than EWC.

I mean it's kind of obvious that Riot are no longer putting any priority behind MSI. There was no song and the production value was abysmal. They didn't even bother promoting the winner afterwards, as they likely suspected it wouldn't gain that much public traction if it wasn't T1. They also almost immediately shifted into the Hall of Legend event, which leads me to believe that MSI did not bring in any meaningful kind of revenue for them. When both G2 and T1 were eliminated before the finals, that probably became the final nail in the coffin.
I think it's pretty obvious at this point that riot will outsource any tournament that isn't world's in order to reduce their yearly expenditure, and honestly from a business perspective, you can't exactly blame them for that outlook.

Both NA and China orgs have a lot of money, and they can even pay to get an advantage (JDG last year paid a fine to the LPL for surpassing the maximum roster salary, on top of the salaries for an all-star team). My point is, if the prize can be bought, the Chinese has already bought it, because they can.

The fact that no one thought T1 had a chance is precisely why I think that. I know some teams perform best under pressure and other crack, but T1 was arguable 3rd or 4th of the asian teams coming to the EWC in term of overall form, yet they basically destroyed everyone on their paths.

but the TES series is undoubtedly a good play by T1 and just overall underperforming on the day by TES. unlike any other game i think if someone is throwing for the sake of T1 winning someone outside will already called it out, cause my line of thinking is how do you throw as a team ? easiest way to not get caught is by shitting the draft, but every co-streamer and pros agree that there's no throwing by draft since T1 just outmaneuvered the drafting phase.

my 2 cents about the whole EWC/saudi topic as a gay person. I already accepted the fact that in capitalist society everything, including morals can be bought and its no use flaming the players/orgs that participate in saudi tournaments because they exist in an ecosystem controlled by riot and they cant do shit against riots decisions. Direct your anger at Riot or the state of saudi arabia(not that this is gonna do anything but whatever)
I mean riot is already 100% owned by tencent and had its fair share of controversy so if you are placing so much importance on morals, start boycotting Riot then.
But what pisses me off is the blatant hypocrisy that Riot and the other actors involved show. They keep acting like they actually care about LGBTQ+ people, especially during pride month.
Like go get that (blood)money but then please stop acting like you actually care about queer people or women(or human rights in general lol). You cant have both.

The boycott pretty much went unheard because the whole event went unheard.
Calling EWC a success is beyond a far cry. The peak viewership in finals was barely over a million. There were plenty of empty seats for T1 games, which has never happened since SKT/T1 debuted and the whole venue was practically dead with more employees on the ground that visitors. Not sure how success is measured, but it's not the word I'd use to describe the whole thing.
Also, EWC is a culmination of many games, not just League, so unless they plan to change the date of the whole event, otherwise, it's happening in the middle of the Summer split, and that's simply not going to work. T1 showed insane signs of fatigue in their first LCK match after they returned. I'm glad IEM Katowice is brought up, because ALL the major teams refused to participate in it, resulting in the League segment getting cancelled, because it happened in the middle of Spring split and affected domestic performance, which teams were not willing to sacrifice. So unless the Summer split of every region is changing, or the entire EWC event is changing, it's simply not replacing MSI.
The prize pool was very generous for the number of days/games played, but compared to the lucrative player contracts and ad contracts that spawn from winning Worlds, it was minuscule and no one will prioritise this event that no one was paying attention to over domestic performance that affects their qualification for Worlds, and their shot at winning Worlds to actually make the big bucks.
Basically, I don't see it working out, and the most likely outcome is that it will end up being IEM Katowice II.

You are not taking into consideration that it's not just League, this was around 20 games overall being played as well. Even if you consider the League portion not that successful, the overall tournament is still going on. Even if they lose money in the short-run, this is a win for them in terms of publicity. Saudi has deep pockets, they're trying to win by becoming the most popular.

Yeah, it was poorly organised. I just get the IEM Katowice feeling all over again. The fatigue was so noticeable for T1, and undoubtedly affected their match against BRO. This was the biggest reason teams didn't want to attend IEM Katowice any more since it screwed them over domestically.

I'm not doubting it's a big event, I just don't think the League portion will last.
Again, look up IEM Katowice. It's a big event, it still happens every year, plethora of tournaments for different games, but League was dropped because the top teams refused to participate.
The prince can have plenty of money, but short of the prize pool for League being $20 million, there's no incentive to this tournament, as Worlds is much more important and the title carries a lot more money. Deep pockets will only convince the teams if you're reaching deep enough. $1 million for the entire event is less than a player's contract offer after they win Worlds.
Not to mention, there's clearly a lack of support locally, which always spells disaster. Gaming is clearly not a big thing in Saudi Arabia, I mean, how often do you hear Saudi Arabia having teams participate in gaming tournaments?
