Seems it would be a fairer comparison to split .22 ammo up from same boxes between the guns when comparing, as there can be so much inconsistency from box to box or really lots of the same ammo
Be awful hard to compare what the rifles are capable of If your throwing different lots together. Yes ammunition can be and is very inconsistent but when your testing to see what a rifle is capable of you have to use like ammunition.
And that was my point. You opened a new box of ammo before shooting the CZ, then the CZ shot like crap after having shot pretty well at 50 yards. My point was maybe you should have used some of the older ammo from the other gun with the CZ or if you were going to open a new box, use that same box with both guns, when comparing two guns
Why do you think they both like the same ammo, maybe not a good comparison, I have 2 CZ'ds an MTR and a PRS one lovel Eley match and the other Lapua lomg range
We’ll I do shoot my guns off camera, and Both did like the ammunition just fine. It performed well in both rifles except for that one box that was inconsistent. I’ve shot both rifles enough to know which one shoots better overall.
On the Ruger I noticed that every time you had a shot that opened up the group it looked and sounded like a rough feed. The bolt hung slightly before chambering the round...maybe your deforming the nose slightly?
I watched the video again and didn’t notice that, I’m sure it was the ammo. But, out of all my rifles the Ruger is the roughest feeding by far. And it’s not the action, without a loaded magazine inserted the action feels pretty good. Those 15 round mags have a lot of spring pressure and that rough feeling is the bolt dragging the round that’s going into the chamber across the round beneath it, it creases the case and the bullet. I’m actually surprised it shoots as well as it does. I probably should have been using the 10 rounders as the spring pressure is adjustable and when adjusted properly it feels much better.
They both shoot SK/Lapua very well, the problem was the inconsistency of the ammunition box to box. The Lapua Long range is one of the best ammunitions for that particular 457. But some lots perform better than others.
Did you just say you could shoot better than a .25 with the cz compered to what you done withe the coustom ruger. Thanks i just ordered my cz elite and going to thead the barrel for anything i want to put on it.
That Range looks like such a nice place to shoot. Kind of like a Park. If I had to guess, I would say you are in East Texas or perhaps Southwestern United States, Colorado? 🎯
Don, Thanks for the GREAT video , as ALWAYS. I would be curious to see if weighing these ammo out would have made any difference? I have found my groups to be more consistent, when I weigh out the flyers. Not sure ammo of this price and quality would have any differences, but the targets say different. I have a problem with paying 23+ for a box of .22 LR ammo, anyway. And to see those quality rifles shoot those groups with that high quality ammo, I think someone would be getting an e-mail or a snail mail letter. Thanks much AGAIN !!!!!!
It’s funny you say that, I was out shooting today working on another video, I was shooting Lapua super long range, and I’ve had so much trouble with inconsistent charges on this ammunition that I weighed it all out and sorted by rim thickness as well. I had the exact same results, fliers and all. So no I don’t think it would have made a difference. lol I really wish it would have.
@@RimfireSS Don - that is so sad to hear that. When I hear Lapua I would think quality and that ammo you are using is 23+ a box, and for that kind of money and just by the fact its all weighed and sorted, tells me there is something WRONG. I hope you reach out to Lapua and let them see what is going on. I would like to see the batch you are having issues with run in their test chamber and see how it does. Good LUCK !!!!!
@@RimfireSSsuper interesting to note that, was considering doing that myself. An additional option would be chronying each shot, comparing the velocity variation with the flyers. For weight sorting, a half grain less bullet might be equalised by a half grain extra charge and so not show on the scales but result in velocity variation for sure.
Don, this is so coincidence and perfect timing, and you confirmed what I was wondering lately....THANK YOU!!! I was at my range today shooting my CZ 457 VMTR and shooting from a brick (packaged as a brick of 500 from a reputable online dealer that I'm sure you've heard of and I've bought from before of various match ammo) of Lapua-LR and also noticed the same... and this is not my first time buying a brick of Lapua-LR (I've bought other bricks of LLR before)... I would have one box out of the brick that I had really great luck with. Open another and it shot kinda "loose" groups at 50 yds. Figured it was time for a couple of patches down the barrel. Same box would still shoot "loosley" even after giving it about 5-10 fouling shots after patching...(1 rimfire blend and two dry patches followed..... and yes, I know how to keep the "Carbon Ring" in check (because I'm OCD about that 🤣) I would eventually open the next box of LLR and start shooting from it ....and it seemed like my MTR had cured itself all of a sudden. 5 shot groups would be really tight (like .5 to .75 inch groups at 50 yards, almost one ragged hole).... A few times I would just sit back and look at the rifle sitting there in the rest and ask myself, WTH just happened..... 🤣🤣🤣. And I noticed this from just getting to the end of one box (of 50) and have to break open the next box of 50. Whether I patch the barrel or not.... Fouling shots or not... usually after a cleaning it only takes "my MTR'" about 3-5 fouling shots and its dialed in at 50yds As I think back, I think this "may" have occurred with other "Bricks " of "match ammo" I've purchased, come to think of it... 🤔
This is the age old problem with .22 ammunition, well if you think about it center fire is the same but serious shooters can reload and make sure everything is the same and there able to get the results they want. This is why people sort and weight and measure there .22 to try and make it more consistent. And I see why, because it’s frustrating as hell when you get ammunition that shoots lights out then the next box don’t. Your paying the long dollar so that don’t happen but even the expensive stuff will shoot like crap from time to time. Trick is to find a ammunition that shoots the most consistent and shoots the best in your rifle. If that’s even possible. 🤷🏼♂️
I notice there is a breeze blowing and with my experience with 22 LR and 22 magnum i don't know why anyone would try target shooting with any wind at all as it has a huge effect on the trajectory. Richie
If I waited for the wind to stop blowing I’d never make any videos. Lol, this is reality, if you can’t learn how to shoot in the wind your not a very good shooter.
I can’t believe Ruger hasn’t offered a similar chassis on the 10/22. Muzzel brake, a student put one on the night before class and it took him off paper about a 6-8” shift to the right. He put the thread protctor back on and came back to his zero.
I think this was a great video and a good comparison. But I am pretty sure at the beginning of the video you stated that you weren’t sure what the CZ was going to do with the lapua ammo. So that being said how about comparing the two guns each with ammo they both like? Again I liked the video.
We’ll you never know what your going to get lot to lot with most of these ammunitions anymore. Hell I pay good money for Lapua Long Range and it’s been so inconsistent lately it’s disgusting. You almost have to shoot 5 groups with your intended ammunition before each video to predict how it will perform. I simply can’t afford that.
I shoot a basically stock 10/22 and given the cost of these two weapons, I feel pretty damn good about what I'm getting at 100 yd!... Somewhere around 1.2 MOA.
Does the RPR use the same barrel as the 10/22? (design/spec) If so that would sell those rifles because of how easy they would be to modify. Probably cheaper too.
Al those modifications and no tuner. A cortina Tuner on a rpr will make it a top shooter on the market. Groups of 5 in the same hole at 50 yards. Once you dial in your ammo at 25 yards. If you watch ammo, you’ll have to redial the tuner to the new ammo.
I was out at the range with my CZ 455 and a guy told me to throw on a Ultradyne Apollo Max and it would be more accurate. I happened to have one and threw it on and my groups tightened up. Who would have thunk it?
I did a video on my BMR a couple weeks ago, I put a EC tuner on it and never adjusted it and it totally changed the rifle. Just the weight on the end of that barrel made such a difference it was unbelievable. That weight on the barrel tames the harmonics and really improves the performance.
@@RimfireSS hmm....never thought about that but that Ultradyne is heavy so it goes along with what you are saying. I never asked that guy why he said Ultradyne instead of any of the others? I bet it had something to do with the weight.
Not sure if there 2-in one but there the 1” orange sticker targets made by just about everyone that makes targets. You can get a pretty good deal on them on Amazon.
This test perfectly explains why I got myself a CZ 457 MTR 20",it shoots great out of the box. A friend of mine bought a RPR, and he had to invest a small fortune to get it to shoot. And still my CZ shoots better. A small side note, the barrel on the RPR was incorrectly installed when he bought the rifle.
The Cz457 is a fantastic value for everything you get, beautiful wood, smooth action, great adjustable trigger, accurate 20” match barrel and a fit and finish that is as good as it gets! Can’t ask for more for $800 bucks! For $1200 really….
@@espkh1549 Yes the RPR shoots magnum, but you have to spend too much money to get it to shoot straight. Plus the CZ also can be fitted with a .22 magnum barrel, and the build quality is far superior.
Does anyone know which shoots better, a stock 22 RPR or stock 457. Understanding ammo variables? Looking to buy but not interested in a build yet. Still learning.
Same lot just very bad consistency box to box. I would get a box that was fantastic, then the next box would have many over and under charged rounds. Was even worse with the super long range.
That was the last 2 boxes I had, so no I didn’t. Velocities in the winter are all over the place also. I have a couple boxes of SLR left but I think I just got a couple of bad bricks (lots) wouldn’t be the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
I agree with the comment on using 10 round mags vs. the 15s. Another mod you may want to consider is adding the a kidd stainless steel plunger and extra power spring to give more consistent mag lock up. Also tune your mags by polishing the bottom of the feed lips and back off the rotary spring preload 2-3 flats. These will make feeding smother, lighter and more consistent.
@@juliusjames5577 I would love to shoot videos a couple of times but with the cost of ammo it’s just not possible. I’m pretty much self funded as I’ve yet to get anyone to join my Patreon. I haven’t really mentioned it on any of my videos but it’s always in the description. But with how little us Guntubers get paid for watch time hours the monthly checks are not even enough to buy a brick of Lapua Long Range. Hopefully It will pay off someday but right now it’s a huge financial drain.
Compare apples to apples. You changed the barrel of the RPR. Leave them both stock. I have both of those rifles. Both like different ammo. When shooting the ammo that both rifles prefer, the test is more fair. Changing the barrel of the RPR is no longer in "my opinion" a Ruger. You simply cannot give credit to Ruger after changing the barrel and trigger. But that is just my opinion. However I did enjoy the video.
He did compare apples to apples in a way. In the video he stated he can shoot the stock trigger in the Ruger equally as well. The CZ costs $350+ more than the Ruger IF you can find one, (which doesn’t seem like a lot until you figure in its $150 from being double the price). and that easily pays for the barrel.. Pretty much a wash..
That’s the whole point of the video…. You have to modify the Ruger to the hilt to even get close to how the CZ shoots. I didn’t keep the Ruger stock because it didn’t shoot very good. I suppose I could have sold it.
Yeah I agree, I need to lot test the rifle. I have found a majority of my rifles like SK, usually when trying to keep things even I try to use something that will shoot good in both rifle.
The only reason I mentioned it is because if I didn’t explain that it shoots better with it on people would have said take the muzzle brake off and it will shoot better. Lol just trying to get ahead of them. I should have mentioned the brand though, so hard to remember everything when filming.
Hi! Very interesting video! Great information value. Just one comment. Timney trigger pronunciation. It is “Tim-ney” not “Tim-en-ney”. Thank you again!
Yes and no. He was making some adjustments to better hit near the point of aim, between groups. As far as I can tell, he wasn't making adjustments for wind during the 5 shot groups, but probably trying to time shots to the most consistent conditions. I do agree, if you are making wind / elevation adjustments during the string of fire, it isn't a valid group. I have nothing to add, he explained and demonstrated the test perfectly, at least to me he did, thanks for the video, I like my mtr too
@@kybbe112 Yes and no. To an untrained eye, they would think the groups are totally different. To me, 5 rounds is 5 rounds, like doing a tall target test, taking into account the turrets are correct. But I do agree, don't mess with turrets during a test, it takes error out of the equation. He wasn't shooting for bulls, he was shooting groups, and trying to keep the groups located for reference to the nearest 1"dot, I really enjoyed his video, thanks for the comment. edit. - he clearly showed when he was making adjustments to his scope, so yes, if just looking at before / after photos, you would definitely see a POI change not knowing adjustments were made
@@wowguy3562 I have no idea how i could say it anymore clearly. If the dot where he used to put his crosshairs, is not there anymore, it is bad for the group. Propably fell to a troll but i try one more time.

My point was maybe you should have used some of the older ammo from the other gun with the CZ or if you were going to open a new box, use that same box with both guns, when comparing two guns
@@michaelthrelkeld212 well in a perfect world, had I known the same lot of ammunition wasn’t consistent box to box I would have done that.
I hear that most Olympic shooter use Eley. Wonder how Eley and Lapua ammo compare, pricewise.
There comparable but I have better results across the board with the SK, it shoots better in most of my rifles.
Nice Don...
There's a MTR near me that I'm considering for purchase...
Buy it!!!!!!
Consider waiting, so you can kick yourself in the future, there are a few guns I passed on, damn I miss those unicorns
Do you have a y videos of the original stock RPR .
Nope, never even fired it in stock configuration, bought everything together and took it apart as soon as I got it. Sorry
Try shooting cardboard from broken down boxes sometime. It leaves perfect holes and no tearing. Would be perfect for videos shows individual holes.
That’s what I use for my backers.
Thanks
Thank you! Wish there were more people like you.
Good stuff. Lapua just needs to get center x out consistently.
Very disappointing to have this happen with such a high priced ammunition.
The MTR is an amazing rifle.
My favorite
I can't believe my local gun shop has had my mtr's twin on the wall for two years, I bought the ugly one, the pretty ones still there
@@wowguy3562 really? Wow that’s unbelievable. Lol must not be any serious rimfire shooters around your neck of the woods.
Thank you, good shooting !!
Surely would have been better to test the 457 with several types of ammo to see the one it likes? Otherwise its not the same comparison?
They both shoot SK/Lapua very well, the problem was the inconsistency of the ammunition box to box. The Lapua Long range is one of the best ammunitions for that particular 457. But some lots perform better than others.

La prova era scontata a favore pe la CZ ma io ho la ruger e mi piace indiscutibilmente di più ... Bella dimostrazione
Très bonne vidéo, thanks 👍
CZ é incrível 👏🏻🇧🇷
This was a good video!
Thanks man
Another very informative Vid. Which Riton is that?
It’s the Conquer 5 5-25x56 It’s a good scope, wish it had different turrets but there ok.
You got those babies dialed in
It’s a constant battle, but one I enjoy greatly!
Fouling shots or not... usually after a cleaning it only takes "my MTR'" about 3-5 fouling shots and its dialed in at 50yds
As I think back, I think this "may" have occurred with other "Bricks " of "match ammo" I've purchased, come to think of it...
Was all of the ammo the same lot number?
Yeah it was.
What’s this device above your scope?
It’s a Trigger Cam for recording through your scope.
@@RimfireSS tks a lot. I’ll find
Great Video
I can’t believe Ruger hasn’t offered a similar chassis on the 10/22. Muzzel brake, a student put one on the night before class and it took him off paper about a 6-8” shift to the right. He put the thread protctor back on and came back to his zero.
That will happen on some rifles, but that’s pretty extreme. Haven’t had that issue here.
@@RimfireSS I was guessing something was hitting. I was surprised it was that far off.
@@charlesmckinley29did the groups shrink. I'll bet they did.
@@Pipizzakitchen yes. He shot well after taking the brake off.
I hear that….. Keep up the good content I enjoy your work
@@chrisbailor733 thank man. I appreciate it!
I shoot a basically stock 10/22 and given the cost of these two weapons, I feel pretty damn good about what I'm getting at 100 yd!... Somewhere around 1.2 MOA.
So 1.5” groups?
Does the RPR use the same barrel as the 10/22? (design/spec) If so that would sell those rifles because of how easy they would be to modify. Probably cheaper too.
Totally different platform. Same magazine but that’s it.
Does it cost too much to put 5 dots on the paper and just shoot once at each?
The idea is to set how close you can get your groups.
Do you have a video on the rpr build
No not really, just a few videos featuring it.
@@mlone7 it absolutely did. Not like there’s a ton of recoil to tame. I have a Ultradyne on my 6arc. Love it! Good stuff.

Are those 2-in orange bullseye?
Buy the RPR shoots magnum
@@espkh1549 Yes the RPR shoots magnum, but you have to spend too much money to get it to shoot straight. Plus the CZ also can be fitted with a .22 magnum barrel, and the build quality is far superior.

Did you put the LLR over a chronograph to see if the issues are showing up there?
What barrel is that on the ruger ?
It’s a Shaw 18”
@@RimfireSS thanks 🙏🏾
Find the best lot for each rifle and redo test. My cz shoots great with a specific lot of center-x. My other cz really likes a lot of SK pistol match.
Nah, I’m good. The CZ shoots better with more ammunition then the Ruger. I’ve shot both enough to know that.
I would have enjoyed seeing that testing. Still a good video👍
I hear ya.
Whats that thing on top of your ocular?
Trigger Cam?
Have you ever tried the RPR with the rotating 10 rds magazine, I've heard that with those magazines it has a little more consistency.
Yeah, I have, they cycle alittle smoother but accuracy seems the same. I’ve even tested it. The 25 round mags are the problem with accuracy.
That’s why I called it a Heavily Modified Ruger in the title.
The point of the video was to show just how good the CZ457 is, it’s just as or more accurate then a highly modified rifle. Costing quite abit less.
How much $ in the ruger vs the cz? Ammo fret is real. I have a die that creates target ammo out of ordinary bricks.$$$
Idk, quite abit more into the Ruger actually. What die do you have?
Bad Ammo + Caffeine = Not the Guns
Why a muzzle break on a 22 because it looks sweet that’s why I’m putty a single chamber break on my ruger LRT

Same lot number. That was the first thing I checked.
Why did you not keep the Ruger standard like the CZ it’s an unfair comparison I feel.try SK ammo I used it on my Ruger 455 and Anschutz supper match.
That’s the whole point of the video…. You have to modify the Ruger to the hilt to even get close to how the CZ shoots. I didn’t keep the Ruger stock because it didn’t shoot very good. I suppose I could have sold it.

Don't shoot out your point of aim when shooting groups.
I have nothing to add, he explained and demonstrated the test perfectly, at least to me he did, thanks for the video, I like my mtr too
@@wowguy3562 The point of the original commenter was propably that shooting groups POA/POI makes it inconsistent after the aiming reference is gone.
@@kybbe112 Yes and no. To an untrained eye, they would think the groups are totally different. To me, 5 rounds is 5 rounds, like doing a tall target test, taking into account the turrets are correct.
