@@5stargunsandgear yeah unfortunately .22 we are at the mercy of the manufacturers and counting on them to keep there machine tolerances up to par. A lot is riding on the guys on the line inspecting those machines.
I got a case (500 rounds) of this off of the prize table at a local NRL22 match. I honestly thought it was Eley club when i snagged it. Wouldn't group in any of my NRL22 guns, so my boy has been burning through it in his single shot savage.
I’ve had great luck with it. It just shot pretty darn good in all the rifles in this video. But I’ve had bad lots of Center X so I wouldn’t give up on it. Nor am I saying every lot of this ammo is good. It’s a Roll of the dice every time we buy different ammunition that isn’t lot tested.
@RimfireSS well, to be fair, we don't really need to roll the dice anymore. Send your barreled action to AZ and let Lupua do your lot testing for you. Or Eley in Texas (I think anyway). One of the companies had a semi trailer where they would lot test at the rimfire nationals when it was in St Louis I believe. I went the Lupua route a couple years ago and sent my action to Mesa. They told me they were working on a similar setup in Indiana or Ohio for the future. They tested like 6 or 7 lots...emailed me a report. They had a suggested lot, cold bore shot, etc etc. At the time I did it, if you bought x amount of cases the entire procedure was free except rifle shipping back. I bought 22 cases, and shoot the same ammo in my BR rifle and my NRL22 rifle. When I run dry, I'll go ahead and do the same thing again. Way, way cheaper than buying a bunch of random lots and trying to determine minute differences at an outside range over the course of a couple months of varying atmospherics.
Always enjoy your videos I should try the Eley contact. I have recently found the Norma red box to be very inconsistent in both of my cz457’s. Have had best results with SK standard plus I don’t buy the $20 a box ammo I am not competition shooting just benchrest at local gun club and squirrel hunting. What is your opinion on Norma match you were positive on it for awhile is it worth trying a couple bricks I can get it for around $8.00 a box from Norma shooting. Any input would be appreciated thanks
The Norma match is a crap shoot. Sometimes it’s really good I’d say 40% of the time. The other 60% not so much. But it shoots so good when you get the good stuff. Maybe just buy a brick if it’s good order another one right away and maybe you’ll get the same lot. I’d definitely try the Eley Contact too.
Don thanks for your response my buddy and I just got 4 bricks of SK standard plus and 1 brick of SK longe range rifle match so we skipped the Norma match and ordered 2 bricks of Eley contact your groups with it look really good especially at $5 a box. Haven’t had the opportunity to shoot as many brands as you have but your videos are very informative and well done. We both have 2 cz’s and 2 are the 20 inch varmit they really do shoot great trigger, area 419 rail and a decent scope sub moa at 50yds with mid range ammo.
I actually did on the CZ457 build video. But RUclips flagged it and wouldn’t approve it. I can’t risk my channel to show you how to do something. Sorry.
@@Threegunmaster same here, I’ve always had a decent 10/22 but nothing like what I have now. It’s a deep rabbit hole for sure, the deeper you go the more it costs. Lol
I've shot a lot of contact, especially out of a pistol. I have found that it is precise for the money, but 1 out of 100 rounds is a cull because of malformed bullets- the culls have a "burr" or "casting flash" . At times they won't chamber in a semi auto because of this without a little help. I'm not sure if it is present in all lots, but it was in the 2 lots I have purchased. I also found that they require more frequent cleaning of the chamber because they tend to leave more residue, perhaps because of the lube.
I’ve had really no problems with feeding. I do get the occasional dud round or over/under charge, or wild flier which is probably from a burr or casting issue like you suggested. But after making the videos I just made of the CCI and how bad it shoots. I’ll be buying more Contact as it beats the pants off anything CCI is producing and it costs about the same as the Standard Velocity.
I'd say that is pretty good practice ammo for sure. Thanks for doing this. Although I did want to see how it worked in one of the 10-22s. I'm sure it works just as well there too.
@@RobsKoiPond Joes got a lot more rounds on his Bergara. But I’ve never really had any problems with mine, except for when I needed to adjust my magazine in the new chassis.
I have one in an MDT LSS Xl chassis and it runs perfectly. Luckily I've never had an issue with it. I couldn't get the L3I mags to run at all unfortunately.
Hi, you're lucky to have that price for Eley, even in Europe price are higher ! And to find very good rounds like Eley (match) lapua or RWS it's about 20 $ and more (20 euros). For me i'ts too expansive for an 22LR cartridge, but with less price you have allways flyers to upset your shoots..... Thanks for your video, regards
I've had the exact same results with Contact. It will shoot 1 amazing group like 1/4 moa, and then 1 that's over 1 moa. I've often wondered why more manufacturers aren't trying heavier projectiles like the Contact - it's 42g vs the typical 40g.
Enjoyed the ammo test w/Eley Contact. Gonna pull some out and try it. I really like my CZ MTR in stock configuration, as well. Always seems to hold its own against custom builds.
Same with Contact. And your gonna get that in this price range, but I’ve been looking at its overall performance and it groups great! As a matter of fact, all of Eleys budget ammo has been pretty good for the price. Better than CCI standard that’s for sure.
Solid groups overall. Especially for the price of this ammo. What cheek riser do you have on your CZ MTR? I have a 34mm tubed Vortex on mine and could use a bit more cheek weld since it's mounted slightly high.
I agree, unfortunately I think it’s just the nature of the beast with .22lr. The factory loading process is not exactly the most precise process in manufacturing. That’s probably the cause of most of it honestly.
I have notice that some of the ammo is crimped around the bullet and some are not not sure about Eley as it is expensive, here SK yellow and long ranger seem the go in western Australia it is very consistent
Don, have you shot eley club out of the MTR? i could be wrong but i think club and maybe contact are their top tier target ammo? i’m planning on doing a test with club, contact and benchrest outlaw. lol still trying to find a eley that shoots as good as SK but doesn’t break the bank…. cheers
I did not pay attention or something but what was the range you shooting at? 50yds or 100yards? I hope is 50y because if does are 100y I got a long way to improve
How often do you clean your .22 rimfire rifles, and would like to see your cleaning regimen for them, and what chemicals and patches that you use! Inquiring shooter would like to know.
I clean them more then I have to. I’d say 3-400 rounds. I use BoreTech C4 carbon remover. I take a wet patch and run it up the barrel. Then I take a new patch wet it down and put it on top of the carbon ring. I let it sit there for 20 minutes. Then I take a brass brush put it in just far enough to get over the carbon ring and then turn it clockwise about 15 times, then with small strokes over the carbon ring probably another 10 strokes. Then run a poly brush up the barrel maybe 20 times. Then I run dry patches through it till they come out clean. Usually around 8. Clean the bolt face with a dry poly brush then wipe it down with brakeleen. Run a CLP wet paper towel through the receiver, then a dry one. Small amount of Lucas gun oil on the bolt and your done. Takes about 30 minutes and it’s usually a pretty deep clean. I find most shoot better clean after about 30 rounds have been fired and the bore is re fouled.
Yea, BoreTech C$ works the best on carbon...have you ever tried lubricant with Graphene as a last step instead of a CLP...Graphene has excellent rust inhibiting properties...better than CLP!@@RimfireSS
Dang! I wish my relatively new B-14r shot Contact as well as yours. I bought 2 bricks based on the reviews I've seen. So far, after about 450 rounds, Contact is the worst performer for me. Hard to evaluate a new rifle with the groups I'm getting from it. I haven't tried the real expensive ammo yet, but so far the best performers for my B-14r are SK standard+ and tac-22. I got a small one hole group from Wolf match extra yesterday, but the rest of the groups with it were average. I wish I could try one ammo in multiple guns like you instead of the other way around!
My B14r shoots everything fairly well. Think I got lucky. Try the Eley Semi auto bench rest, regular and Outlaw. Those shoot excellent for me as well. Is the Bergara your only .22? Or are there others?
@@RimfireSS My other .22 is a pretty much stock 10/22. Not good for evaluating ammo. I'm planning on getting a new barrel for it very soon though, probably KIDD. Thanks for the SABR suggestion.
Would be cool to see sorting tests performed to try to identify fliers before shooting. I think you've done weight sorting and rim thickness, curious if concentricity testing would be more impactful?
I noticed on your 457 Open, after the “dud” round, each shot was “spewing” something out (check the video) much more so than the 1st 2 5-round groups (in those, mostly gas, very little particulates but moving quickly), but the last 3 groups, the particulates were really coming out and falling just out just beyond the table. Edit: I wonder if it is cartridge filler? Watching the rest of the other rifles, it would be visually apparent after 10 rounds for each of the other rifles. Wonder if that is why it is cheaper as non-match ammo.
@@stevenlee2780 yeah this is a old video, if you look at the comments there was a discussion about what it might be. Best we can figure is unspent powder.
Flyers are the bane of .22 rimfire ammunition. Having shot several hundred thousand rounds of it (at least) I have never found a brand or type that does not throw flyers---not one. Sue to this phenomenon which plagues ALL .22 rimfire rifles I have never bothered to spend money on a rifle I KNOW is going to produce flyers. This fact is so certain you can bet heavy coin on it. So---my Savage MKII FV--SR consistently produces groups equal to or better than $3000 custom .22 Rifles. Over long years this has kept me from spending money on custom rifles. NONE of them are worth the money. They do look cool though.
Another great video. I find it interesting that all your rifles shot the Contact very well and fairly similar. I would have expected more if a difference between them. You do have some really nice rigs though. One question. Did you try this ammo in your 10/22 with Kidd barrel? I tried it and it shot well but I had a heck of a time getting the rounds to chamber. It appeared as though the bullet/casing diameter was a bit oversized and I had to manually force it in. Just curious if you had a similar experience. Thanks!
@@delam I have both, the AccuTac is more stable and doesn’t really move when you load it, where the Atlas does move forward when you load it and rocks back on recoil. I think this is probably more preferred. I like both of them, the atlas is easier to adjust when behind the rifle also. I actually prefer the Atlas but there both high quality bipods. The Atlas is less expensive also.
Excellent array of rifles! Very interesting comparison and some good results. Weight check and rim measure would be interesting to see if you can identify duds. According to some experts, 20" seems to be the optimum barrel length...after that the bullet starts slowing down through friction and powder is burnt up. This could account for the slower velocity on the second rifle. Fascinated to hear what other Tubers think! Great shooting and video as always Don. Thanks!
I’ve never seen the Arken EPL. But I really like Arken scopes. I have a Vortex Venom which is better then a Diamondback Tactical and I like the EP5 way better. I like the glass and the turrets better. Only real flaw of the Arken scopes is the eye box, but once you get used to it it’s not even noticeable.
Unburnt powder. Never seen that before. Only rifle that didn’t do it was the MTR and that has a tight bore… 🤷🏼♂️ weird. Maybe the camera position was just right where the sun was highlighting it.
@@pawelnowak7811 oh yeah, it comes with a few different inserts to get you up where you need it. Now you do have to drill a couple small holes in the stock but the riser will live on the rifle after that so no big deal.
The problem with Contact is you can't find anyone that manages their inventory of it by lot numbe. So if you do find a good lot, it's virtually impossible to intentionally buy it again!
I know. That does suck. Having that same problem with 80 percent of all the other ammunition on the market. .22 is more popular than ever so I doubt things will get any easier. I have pretty good luck with random SK but I still get a turd lot from time to time. 😂 not funny…
Eley's quality has gone down since the buy out by the employees. I get several misfires in a brick. Otoh I have had really good results with Eley SABRP. It groups better than SK Rifle Match at 200 yards.
@@RimfireSS The Outlaw shot about like CCI SV in my rifles. OTOH Precision shoots really well. Bought a case of a certain Lot #. Most folks don't know that Eley bought Killough in 2017. Eley was bought by management 2014 from IMI.
Not sure why people say “so it’s not a CZ anymore” when you put a different engine in a Camaro, it’s still a Camaro. If you replace the wheels and tires, it’s still a Camaro. Does it upset you that I improved MY rifle? How would you like me to describe my rifle now, besides the name of the platform I improved?
The type of flyer you got on target #5 with the MTR, I call those FLINGERS I get one about every eight shots with ALL BRANDS of ammo out of my $2600 Vodoo 360. Apparently I paid extra for the worst Vodoo ever to leave the factory
That rifle pisses me off. Lol, every time I shoot that thing it won’t eject. No matter what I’ve done I can’t correct it. All ammunition does it. I’m gonna send it in I think. I’m sure they won’t be able to reproduce it and I’ll waist $50 sending it in.
To each his own. For a good portion of my shooting it works just fine. But it does lack the precision/confidence factor needed for the real precise shooting. Just trying to save a buck here and there.
Respectable groups even with the flyers.
Yeah I’m pretty happy with it. Definitely better then CCI Standard at about the same price.

That's been my experience with this ammo, a flier about every 10 rounds. But I've shot my smallest groups with it and it does great at 100 yards.
It’s pretty stable out to 200 actually. Next weeks video will show that.
Please make a video how to instal the arca accessoire 🙏🏻
I actually did on the CZ457 build video. But RUclips flagged it and wouldn’t approve it. I can’t risk my channel to show you how to do something. Sorry.
Thanks Don, great shooting !
I've got a scoped Ruger MK3 target model that shoots this load incredibly well
That’s awesome. Most of my rifles shoot it good. Decent ammo for the money.
@@RimfireSS really like your setups, I'm just getting started into rimfire benchrest. And I'm really enjoying it.
@@Threegunmaster oh man, you got bit! Have fun with it but be careful, it can get insanely expensive!
@@RimfireSS I shot IDPA AND 3Gun for years and I never thought I'd have $2400 in a rimfire rifle
I’m waiting for RUclips to clear that particular video. Should be next week. Been waiting for approval for over 2 weeks.
I shoot this ammo in a Kidd 22. Loves it. Very accurate for the price. Killough shooting Sports. $15 flat rate shipping.

Rob I got so frustrated I sold my b14
Hi, you're lucky to have that price for Eley, even in Europe price are higher ! And to find very good rounds like Eley (match) lapua or RWS it's about 20 $ and more (20 euros). For me i'ts too expansive for an 22LR cartridge, but with less price you have allways flyers to upset your shoots..... Thanks for your video, regards
Yup, even with the expensive stuff them damn fliers rear there ugly heads. Lol
You have some really nice rifle, I enjoy watching your videos.
Thank you. And thanks for commenting.
When you shot the Savage there was some kind of debris coming out of your barrel after every shot
@@nicholasfuentes9058 yeah, only with the Eley contact. Think it's unburnt powder.
I've had the exact same results with Contact. It will shoot 1 amazing group like 1/4 moa, and then 1 that's over 1 moa. I've often wondered why more manufacturers aren't trying heavier projectiles like the Contact - it's 42g vs the typical 40g.
And it’s pretty hot for subsonic. 1115 in the MTR
Enjoyed the ammo test w/Eley Contact. Gonna pull some out and try it. I really like my CZ MTR in stock configuration, as well. Always seems to hold its own against custom builds.
@@ericf4779 it’s a hell of a rifle
Eley target has had one huge flyer per box for me haven't tried contact
Same with Contact. And your gonna get that in this price range, but I’ve been looking at its overall performance and it groups great! As a matter of fact, all of Eleys budget ammo has been pretty good for the price. Better than CCI standard that’s for sure.
Solid groups overall. Especially for the price of this ammo. What cheek riser do you have on your CZ MTR? I have a 34mm tubed Vortex on mine and could use a bit more cheek weld since it's mounted slightly high.
It’s a Victor Titan cheek rest.
Man, i love how you inset the targets.
What size are these targets and what is that center ring, 0.50"?
The OD of the unlimited 100 ring is .500" and the factory 100 ring is .875
It’s a ARA target.
it would be nice to find out what causes the flyers?
I agree, unfortunately I think it’s just the nature of the beast with .22lr. The factory loading process is not exactly the most precise process in manufacturing. That’s probably the cause of most of it honestly.
I have notice that some of the ammo is crimped around the bullet and some are not not sure about Eley as it is expensive, here SK yellow and long ranger seem the go in western Australia it is very consistent
@@colinsimmons2913 I have decent luck with SK ammunition in general but I still get the occasional flier. Hell maybe it’s me….

Thanks for Subscribing Mike.
I’ve pretty much decided the time it takes to go through sorting isn’t worth it. I’m just not convinced you can identify fliers by any means.
eley for five bucks a box - never thought I would see the day
Shoots good too!
I wonder how the Eley force high velocity does?
@@markworden9169 I have yet to try that one.
Thanks!
I think I did….. and I don’t remember it being a problem. I’ll have to try it again. No problem in my GM barrels.
Yeah, no issue in my GM or Fedderson barrel. Thanks for the reply.
I don't know for your other guns, but 457 MTR has a Match barrel
@@NicolasCharretier yes it does, not sure what your point is.
@@RimfireSS being a match barrel, it's a tight fit chamber, and some ammunitions a little bit out of "standard" fit might be difficult to chamber.
@@NicolasCharretier I have had that with Winchester ammo but that's the only one. And I never shoot that crap so it's not a problem. Lol
Thanks for the comparison. What is the carbon fiber bipod on your 457 MTR and do you like it or the Atlas better?
That the MDT ground pod. It’s ok but I prefer the Atlas out of all of them.
@@RimfireSS thanks, I’m about to buy one for my first precision 22 - CZ 457. Have you tried Accu-Tac and if so, how does it compare to the Atlas?
@@delam I have both, the AccuTac is more stable and doesn’t really move when you load it, where the Atlas does move forward when you load it and rocks back on recoil. I think this is probably more preferred. I like both of them, the atlas is easier to adjust when behind the rifle also. I actually prefer the Atlas but there both high quality bipods. The Atlas is less expensive also.
Hey Don whats that electronic callout called..thx Mark
www.opticsplanet.com/competition-electronics-prochrono-dlx-with-bluetooth.html
Excellent array of rifles! Very interesting comparison and some good results. Weight check and rim measure would be interesting to see if you can identify duds. According to some experts, 20" seems to be the optimum barrel length...after that the bullet starts slowing down through friction and powder is burnt up. This could account for the slower velocity on the second rifle. Fascinated to hear what other Tubers think! Great shooting and video as always Don. Thanks!
Could you tell me what you are using for a rear bag?
It’s a Armageddon gear game changer.
Have you shot federal premium Hunter match?
Yes, and it shoots ok in a couple of my rifles but it’s not great.
if they were the same price, would you buy a Vortex Diamondback Tactical, or arken EPL

$5/box!?! I only wish. It's 13-15 here in Canada.
Omg…. That sucks! I lied, it’s $5.25 here.
