@@roxie4843 look up "j curve" for alcohol. It's mainly for antioxidant alcohols like red wine. A little bit of this can provide more benefits than none and too much is worse than none.

@yourlittle princess I don't think you're eating enough food. Try slowly eating more nutritious calories per week and see what your results are. Even if you weren't exercising at all, Most people (even your height) should be eating more than 1000kcal per day. But do it slowly because your metabolism will need time to adjust to it. Calories in/calories out isn't always the most effective method for fat loss
@yourlittle princess if you want to build muscle, you should be eating more calories. Anything less than 1000 is bad for you. Also include a lot of protein in your diet
@yourlittle princess That seems underweight. And you should be eating more, maybe 1600 calories. If you want toned arms and to build muscle, you need to eat more. Muscles build when the body has enough energy, not when you're under eating. Get some help(not as an insult) cause you probably have an eating disorder.
I have seriously watched HUNDREDS of videos related to this subject and have NEVER, not ever I'm telling ya, been this informed and not confused in my lifetime. As someone who was fed the WRONG health & fitness information for most of my life (I just turned 43), I would say that what the nutritional sciences have only begun to teach us today in 2019 is the rightest they have ever been. The information you are sharing here Mari is pretty spot-on, simple and direct...especially when it comes to women. If most of your fan base are young women in their 20s or early 30s then they should LISTEN to this video. Like you just stated, I have found that most women (if you are not born with the genes and body of Gwyneth Paltrow) will thrive off fat as a fuel source. We become obese slowly over time when we focus on carbs, especially as you age, want to start creating the best conditions for childbirth, and/or start to move into pre-menopause in your late thirties/forties. Eating 6 times a day is also the worst thing you can do unless you are a man trying to build massive muscle. The intermittent fasting movement is the best thing that has ever happened to my life. I’m actually kind of pissed that I was told otherwise. In short, I am saying that yes, Mari is right. Focus on eating at a calorie deficit, stopping putting food in your mouth all day, move your body everyday whether its in the gym or elsewhere, and eat more fat in your diet and less carbs (unless you are born with the genes of Gwyneth Paltrow)....and you will be the happiest, fittest and leanest version of yourself.
This! I saw a dietitian and nutritionist for weightloss and NEVER lost a pound. I stopped going and started high fat low carb with intermittent fasting. I am down 30lbs since October, and I feel amazing! I had to sit through a nutrition class today and sad yelling on the inside about how wrong the information was.
0853579 H I follow Goop and love Paltrow’s site. I actually love Paltrow for everything she has done to promote health and wellness. This was not meant to pick on her. But it is pretty clear that Gwyneth has genetics that naturally promote low body fat and leanness. You can look at her mother and see a similar ectomorph body type. What I was really trying to say is that a lot of people in the health industry promote nutritional programs that do not work for most people AS THEY AGE and their hormones shift. Especially people who are endormorphs (their bodies carry more fat). What Mari is saying here is that we are all unique and different and so should eat in a way that our supports the best versions of ourselves. You have to experiment with what works for you. And for me-and most women who age-fasting and higher fat diets support our hormonal evolution. Doesn’t mean carbs are bad. I eat them everyday, especially if I am working out and strength training.
Yes lm 47 and in total agreement...higher fat lower carb and protein per my body weight works for me. I also just incorporated hiit instead of regular cardio along with my lifting. I think the stomach fat will melt off in no time now...l also started back with lF and keto. Gonna peak and see where l am and how my body feels after the first 7 days. I got 6 more to go! :)

Yes!!! Fasting & low carb will keep you lean as hell . Also helps with sooooo many other things like if you suffer from diabetes . Fasting itself is extremely helpful for your health. As humans we are not designed to eat 24/7

I’m the same height as you and weighed 132 after my first year at college! I’m now down to 110 :) what worked for me was tracking my macros for a couple months and then just eating intuitively ever since. Also HIIT circuits like Kayla Itsines guide combined with incline walking I found to be the best way to lean down. Good luck with your journey you can do it!!!

It's so easy to get sucked into the Instagram diet schemes and it's also soooo easy to be too obsessive with every single thing you put in your mouth, to where you deny your body of necessary nutrition and crash eventually. As I was trying to lose fat (have done with great success in the past 6 months), I also decreased my carb intake only to become a slight insomniac and having little energy. As soon as I added a portion or so to my food, everything got right back into place! That being said, you are so right about the lack of articles that mention the differences between fat and weight loss. I always thought exercise would help me flatten my stomach and help define my abs. It wasn't until I changed the way I ate that I un-intentionally was able to define my muscles EVERYWHERE. And I love it. I believe in the 80-20% rule about losing fat/weight so in terms of having 1/2 cheat meals a week, I stopped feeling guilty and enjoy every bit of it :)

I never comment on videos but I watched this and I just had to. I'm 21, female, 5'6'' 140 lbs (now), but last summer I lost 25 lbs of fat from doing this exact thing she just described. This video is AMAZING, and I wish it had been out when I started my journey. I calculated my BMR using the equation, subtracted 300 calories, used MFP every day to track my macros and calorie intake, weight trained 5 times a week and slowly added in cardio. I started at 165 lbs and 3 months later I was 25 lbs down, toned, and felt the most productive and healthy I have ever felt in my life. The reason I figured it all out was from reading COUNTLESS articles about the science behind food, macronutrients, and how our bodies utilize muscle. The one thing I will say is that for me specifically, high protein and complex carbs were a big part of my effective diet. However, no single video or article explained everything to me - I learned it all from piecing little bits of information together until I finally felt like I was ready to start. She just compiled a very huge chunk of that information into one amazing video, and I really wish this had been around when I was first learning. I love watching her channel and insta stories for ideas and motivation! Thank you for being a huge inspiration Mari!!!

I’m a 17 year old female, 5’7” and I currently weight 158 (usually 155 but I haven’t been active) and my goal is to reach 135 pounds. I want to lose weight through a caloric deficit then weight train when I reach 135 (at this point I would stop weighing myself) because I want improve my health. I haven’t started because I want to educate myself on how to safely lose weight without putting my body at risk because I was blessed with this body so I ought to care of it. As someone who has followed macros and has been successful in fat loss and muscle gain with a caloric deficit I know that everything you sad is true. However following macros made me extremely strict with what I ate and I felt guilty going over my calories/ macros. It made my relationship with food terrible and unsustainable. So my question is how closely do you follow your macros and do you use MFP. I was sometimes obsessive kinda force-feeding myself when I was under on my protein. Have you ever had this issue?
claudia Medina I’ve just started, but at the moment because I’m strength training, I’m focussing on making sure that my protein is as high as possible. That’s all I really obsess over, and the other macros can fluctuate. Hopefully this works. ...However, I do love fish a lot, so maybe I’ll end up with more foods with fat in it than intended.
claudia Medina I’m the same way. I’m so strict on myself that it drives me insane. I’ve had plenty of days I under ate just to see a change on the scale the next day. The app is definitely good at teaching you what is the best portion for whatever your goal is but after that I stopped using it. I know myself and I know I’ll let my obsessiveness get the best of me. Better to learn what is good for your body and when you are full than to starve or stuff yourself. It’ll cause problems long term, trust me. I also don’t weigh myself on a daily basis anymore.

Girl you are telling the truth. I am down 90lbs for all the reason you say. You got to be in ketosis and increase human growth hormone while working out. I do a mixed workout, 3 days a week at least. I am doing body weight workouts, and now my weight loss is on crack.

Dr Gabrielle Lyon is a protein expert. Getting fatty protein in is so important, especially for aging. I think everyone should be animal based. I also think everyone has a different carb threshold. For being young, your advice is pretty good compared to most younger people I see on here. I also stopped trying to be carnivore/keto. I always ended up binging. I now do 40 non inflammatory carbs or less per meal. I avoid fake foods, especially seed oils at all costs.

You don’t really need that much of protein - 1g per vou weight in pounds - ... 1.2g per body weight (in kilos) is totally enough! I read some studies about it 😊 so you can fill up the rest of remaining calories with either carbs or fat 😘

I’m a bit older and when I started dieting it was all about the low fat foods. I also struggle with mood and hormones but I have never been able to eat a higher fat diet because of my diet brain wash! I’m going to try using healthy fats as fuel this week and see how I feel? My calorie maintenance level is naturally really low: about 1200 calories. It's not a case of "damaged metabolism", this runs in the family and I have always been like this, since I was a teen. I feel totally fine and not hungry with 1200 calories a day (and can workout fine etc.). If I need to lose weight, I need to go down to 900-1000. Just putting this out there in case there are other women who feel they need "abnormally low" amounts of calories.

I don't know how much I should be eating I'm so confused 😕 I'm 5'1 maybe 5'2 and I'm 130 IBS and I just want to lose some body fat not necessarily "lose weight" in my tummy and back. Hi! As a former elite track athlete for almost ten years, I would say incorporate weight lifting and a mix of some cardio to lose the fat and tone your body at the same time! I hope this helps. I would lift weights about 3 days a week and do 3 sets of 6-8 heavy reps. 30 min of cardio would be a good start as well. Since you have IBS, I would start easy with cardio and pick up the intensity if your digestion isn’t negatively impacted.

Is it possible to lose fat but gain muscle at the same time? I know you said to concentrate on macros and high protein for muscle, and for fat loss to count calories and be in a calorie deficit. Would losing fat and toning at the same time clash too much? Should I do fat loss before toning?

What do you think about carb cycling? Right now I am tending to eat more egg white oats/ bananas/ clean carbs on my highest activity days (orange theory workouts etc) than going high protein lower carb on my rest days. I generally eat moderate fats. Avocado/ peanut butter etc.

I tried the whole 1 gram of protein per 1 pound of body weight thing for a few months and it seriously messed up my stomach. I was really sick and ended up losing weight because I had diarrhea and was puking all the time, and my stomach couldn't handle certain types of protein for a while because of it. Just putting this out there for people to see so you know this method isn't for everyone.
were you doing weight lifting during this time? this is typically only recommended for that heavy exercise because protein is meant to rebuild the muscles you just tore up during the workout.

I have pretty bad mental health and I’ve always wanted to get more toned and get fat loss (not weight loss) but I’m like super afraid that if I start doing things like calorie count and super monitoring my food intake, etc, that I might get unhealthy about it and develop an eating disorder or something. Maybe this is irrational but is there any way to get over that? I just don’t want to become mentally unhealthy while trying to be physically so.

Is it 1g of protein per current body weight or desired body weight? If you’re 200 pounds and want to lose 30 are you eating 200g of protein or 170g? As a vegan/vegetarian I feel like these numbers are impossible to hit. Most I can do is 130. :/
M Leheta you should be eating your current body weight! and also you should definitely invest in some vegan protein and vegan protein snacks. when you lose some weight you go back in and recalculate your macros
You need to watch FitNika on youtube. Watch her video titled "Vegan Bodybuilding | Episode 1: Protein". It busts the myth that we need to eat so much protein. It's important to recognize this recommendation is based on an outdated recommendation of an old study that measured what a bodybuilder or strength athlete needed. It's not a recommendation intended for people like you and me. Fit Nika IS a bodybuilder and even she doesn't even use that much protein to build muscle. So hopefully that reassures you a bit.

@yourlittle princess I don't think you're eating enough food. Try slowly eating more nutritious calories per week and see what your results are. Even if you weren't exercising at all, Most people (even your height) should be eating more than 1000kcal per day. But do it slowly because your metabolism will need time to adjust to it. Calories in/calories out isn't always the most effective method for fat loss
@yourlittle princess if you want to build muscle, you should be eating more calories. Anything less than 1000 is bad for you. Also include a lot of protein in your diet
@yourlittle princess That seems underweight. And you should be eating more, maybe 1600 calories. If you want toned arms and to build muscle, you need to eat more. Muscles build when the body has enough energy, not when you're under eating. Get some help(not as an insult) cause you probably have an eating disorder.
That’s why some women in body building and a lot of underweight women start having irregular menstrual periods or even stop having them!

As someone who was fed the WRONG health & fitness information for most of my life (I just turned 43), I would say that what the nutritional sciences have only begun to teach us today in 2019 is the rightest they have ever been. The information you are sharing here Mari is pretty spot-on, simple and direct...especially when it comes to women. If most of your fan base are young women in their 20s or early 30s then they should LISTEN to this video. Like you just stated, I have found that most women (if you are not born with the genes and body of Gwyneth Paltrow) will thrive off fat as a fuel source. We become obese slowly over time when we focus on carbs, especially as you age, want to start creating the best conditions for childbirth, and/or start to move into pre-menopause in your late thirties/forties. Eating 6 times a day is also the worst thing you can do unless you are a man trying to build massive muscle. The intermittent fasting movement is the best thing that has ever happened to my life. I’m actually kind of pissed that I was told otherwise. In short, I am saying that yes, Mari is right. Focus on eating at a calorie deficit, stopping putting food in your mouth all day, move your body everyday whether its in the gym or elsewhere, and eat more fat in your diet and less carbs (unless you are born with the genes of Gwyneth Paltrow)....and you will be the happiest, fittest and leanest version of yourself.
This! I saw a dietitian and nutritionist for weightloss and NEVER lost a pound. I stopped going and started high fat low carb with intermittent fasting. I am down 30lbs since October, and I feel amazing! I had to sit through a nutrition class today and sad yelling on the inside about how wrong the information was.
0853579 H I follow Goop and love Paltrow’s site. I actually love Paltrow for everything she has done to promote health and wellness. This was not meant to pick on her. But it is pretty clear that Gwyneth has genetics that naturally promote low body fat and leanness. You can look at her mother and see a similar ectomorph body type. What I was really trying to say is that a lot of people in the health industry promote nutritional programs that do not work for most people AS THEY AGE and their hormones shift. Especially people who are endormorphs (their bodies carry more fat). What Mari is saying here is that we are all unique and different and so should eat in a way that our supports the best versions of ourselves. You have to experiment with what works for you. And for me-and most women who age-fasting and higher fat diets support our hormonal evolution. Doesn’t mean carbs are bad. I eat them everyday, especially if I am working out and strength training.
Yes lm 47 and in total agreement...higher fat lower carb and protein per my body weight works for me. I also just incorporated hiit instead of regular cardio along with my lifting. I think the stomach fat will melt off in no time now...l also started back with lF and keto. Gonna peak and see where l am and how my body feels after the first 7 days. I got 6 more to go! :)

Yes!!! Fasting & low carb will keep you lean as hell . Also helps with sooooo many other things like if you suffer from diabetes . Fasting itself is extremely helpful for your health. As humans we are not designed to eat 24/7

I’m the same height as you and weighed 132 after my first year at college! I’m now down to 110 :) what worked for me was tracking my macros for a couple months and then just eating intuitively ever since. Also HIIT circuits like Kayla Itsines guide combined with incline walking I found to be the best way to lean down. Good luck with your journey you can do it!!!

As I was trying to lose fat (have done with great success in the past 6 months), I also decreased my carb intake only to become a slight insomniac and having little energy. As soon as I added a portion or so to my food, everything got right back into place!
That being said, you are so right about the lack of articles that mention the differences between fat and weight loss. I always thought exercise would help me flatten my stomach and help define my abs. It wasn't until I changed the way I ate that I un-intentionally was able to define my muscles EVERYWHERE. And I love it. I believe in the 80-20% rule about losing fat/weight so in terms of having 1/2 cheat meals a week, I stopped feeling guilty and enjoy every bit of it :)

I never comment on videos but I watched this and I just had to. I'm 21, female, 5'6'' 140 lbs (now), but last summer I lost 25 lbs of fat from doing this exact thing she just described. This video is AMAZING, and I wish it had been out when I started my journey. I calculated my BMR using the equation, subtracted 300 calories, used MFP every day to track my macros and calorie intake, weight trained 5 times a week and slowly added in cardio. I started at 165 lbs and 3 months later I was 25 lbs down, toned, and felt the most productive and healthy I have ever felt in my life. The reason I figured it all out was from reading COUNTLESS articles about the science behind food, macronutrients, and how our bodies utilize muscle. The one thing I will say is that for me specifically, high protein and complex carbs were a big part of my effective diet. However, no single video or article explained everything to me - I learned it all from piecing little bits of information together until I finally felt like I was ready to start. She just compiled a very huge chunk of that information into one amazing video, and I really wish this had been around when I was first learning. I love watching her channel and insta stories for ideas and motivation! Thank you for being a huge inspiration Mari!!!

As someone who has followed macros and has been successful in fat loss and muscle gain with a caloric deficit I know that everything you sad is true. However following macros made me extremely strict with what I ate and I felt guilty going over my calories/ macros. It made my relationship with food terrible and unsustainable. So my question is how closely do you follow your macros and do you use MFP. I was sometimes obsessive kinda force-feeding myself when I was under on my protein. Have you ever had this issue?
claudia Medina I’ve just started, but at the moment because I’m strength training, I’m focussing on making sure that my protein is as high as possible. That’s all I really obsess over, and the other macros can fluctuate. Hopefully this works.
...However, I do love fish a lot, so maybe I’ll end up with more foods with fat in it than intended.
claudia Medina I’m the same way. I’m so strict on myself that it drives me insane. I’ve had plenty of days I under ate just to see a change on the scale the next day. The app is definitely good at teaching you what is the best portion for whatever your goal is but after that I stopped using it. I know myself and I know I’ll let my obsessiveness get the best of me. Better to learn what is good for your body and when you are full than to starve or stuff yourself. It’ll cause problems long term, trust me. I also don’t weigh myself on a daily basis anymore.
I feel like this mentality can easily lead to having an eating disorder, which is one thing I’m trying to stay away from, it’s scary to hear about

Girl you are telling the truth. I am down 90lbs for all the reason you say. You got to be in ketosis and increase human growth hormone while working out. I do a mixed workout, 3 days a week at least. I am doing body weight workouts, and now my weight loss is on crack.

Dr Gabrielle Lyon is a protein expert. Getting fatty protein in is so important, especially for aging.
I think everyone should be animal based. I also think everyone has a different carb threshold. For being young, your advice is pretty good compared to most younger people I see on here. I also stopped trying to be carnivore/keto. I always ended up binging. I now do 40 non inflammatory carbs or less per meal. I avoid fake foods, especially seed oils at all costs.

You don’t really need that much of protein - 1g per vou weight in pounds - ... 1.2g per body weight (in kilos) is totally enough! I read some studies about it 😊 so you can fill up the rest of remaining calories with either carbs or fat 😘

VERY HELPFUL ! nice to hear a different perspective. I liked how you emphasized how important it is to listen to the INDIVIDUAL body. As females we need to push that because we have our complicated hormones we need to also take care off. It isnt worth it at all if you don't have a handle on that. Great work girl! I love that you guys can eat together but have different ways of eating. I just found your channel and already love it 😁😁 My boyfriend is better off carbs and I run better off fats lol just like you! I still have quite a bit of fat to drop..60lbs I've lost 23 so far and did keto for a while but I need a diet more sustainable and something that fits budget and lifestyle 😊 Just started a caloric deficit, will begin to hone in on my macros soon

I’m a bit older and when I started dieting it was all about the low fat foods. I also struggle with mood and hormones but I have never been able to eat a higher fat diet because of my diet brain wash! I’m going to try using healthy fats as fuel this week and see how I feel? My calorie maintenance level is naturally really low: about 1200 calories. It's not a case of "damaged metabolism", this runs in the family and I have always been like this, since I was a teen. I feel totally fine and not hungry with 1200 calories a day (and can workout fine etc.). If I need to lose weight, I need to go down to 900-1000. Just putting this out there in case there are other women who feel they need "abnormally low" amounts of calories.

I don't know how much I should be eating I'm so confused 😕 I'm 5'1 maybe 5'2 and I'm 130 IBS and I just want to lose some body fat not necessarily "lose weight" in my tummy and back. Any suggestions anyone? I guess my body type would be considered "skinny fat" should I maybe be on a slight calorie deficit????
Hi! As a former elite track athlete for almost ten years, I would say incorporate weight lifting and a mix of some cardio to lose the fat and tone your body at the same time! I hope this helps. I would lift weights about 3 days a week and do 3 sets of 6-8 heavy reps. 30 min of cardio would be a good start as well. Since you have IBS, I would start easy with cardio and pick up the intensity if your digestion isn’t negatively impacted.

Is it possible to lose fat but gain muscle at the same time? I know you said to concentrate on macros and high protein for muscle, and for fat loss to count calories and be in a calorie deficit. Would losing fat and toning at the same time clash too much? Should I do fat loss before toning?

What do you think about carb cycling? Right now I am tending to eat more egg white oats/ bananas/ clean carbs on my highest activity days (orange theory workouts etc) than going high protein lower carb on my rest days. I generally eat moderate fats. Avocado/ peanut butter etc.

I tried the whole 1 gram of protein per 1 pound of body weight thing for a few months and it seriously messed up my stomach. I was really sick and ended up losing weight because I had diarrhea and was puking all the time, and my stomach couldn't handle certain types of protein for a while because of it. Just putting this out there for people to see so you know this method isn't for everyone.
were you doing weight lifting during this time? this is typically only recommended for that heavy exercise because protein is meant to rebuild the muscles you just tore up during the workout.

pounds) so should I eat 65 grams or 143 grams?
And then On internet people suggest 1g of protein x kg not per pound so It’s way more confusing

I have pretty bad mental health and I’ve always wanted to get more toned and get fat loss (not weight loss) but I’m like super afraid that if I start doing things like calorie count and super monitoring my food intake, etc, that I might get unhealthy about it and develop an eating disorder or something. Maybe this is irrational but is there any way to get over that? I just don’t want to become mentally unhealthy while trying to be physically so.

Is it 1g of protein per current body weight or desired body weight? If you’re 200 pounds and want to lose 30 are you eating 200g of protein or 170g? As a vegan/vegetarian I feel like these numbers are impossible to hit. Most I can do is 130. :/
M Leheta you should be eating your current body weight! and also you should definitely invest in some vegan protein and vegan protein snacks. when you lose some weight you go back in and recalculate your macros
I have implemented vegan protein. The “garden of life” brand. And it’s helped so much to hit my 150 grams
It’s actually not your body weight it’s your lean body mass. You can gain weight if you eat too much protein.
You need to watch FitNika on youtube. Watch her video titled "Vegan Bodybuilding | Episode 1: Protein". It busts the myth that we need to eat so much protein. It's important to recognize this recommendation is based on an outdated recommendation of an old study that measured what a bodybuilder or strength athlete needed. It's not a recommendation intended for people like you and me. Fit Nika IS a bodybuilder and even she doesn't even use that much protein to build muscle. So hopefully that reassures you a bit.
