*"Hatred and fear are a mirror; love is a window."*
That's just fucking DEEP man. Basically, hate and fear are reflections of ourselves and the things we hate and fear, whereas love is hope for something better that we've yet to experience. What a way with words, that Guillermo del Toro.
The key is to embrace the deep and for this fear must be overcome because within the crushing depths is where we bury our sins.
@@sigmasix3719 damn. is that from something?
Fantastic...
When you look at a mirror, its like trying to look through a window... but the view is always getting blocked by YOU. (your reflection)
Its exactly how fear and hate works.
Its so very easy to love, but ego can get in the way just as easily and it turns into fear and hate.
If you hate your rapist does that mean you really hate yourself?
Amazing that Flanagan's childhood fear was being alone in the dark; I feel like I have never seen ANYONE film a dark, empty room like he can, it's terrifying
Fr.. the best dark empty room scene I’ve seen that encapsulates that feeling is from “The Babadook” probably because it’s a POV shot
I was intrigued by how they were scared kids and talked about it as if it were a pattern among horror professionals. I'm a big horror fan (but don't work with it) and I was a relatively "brave" kid, in terms of not being very superstitious. I felt comfortable when alone and would stay up late by myself to watch horror movies on TV since I was 5 or 6 years old.
Genuinely blows my mind that they seem like the most relaxed, calm, and genuinely nice people ever…and then you watch their movies 😂
Yup it really terrified me on haunting of hill house he didn't use jump scares or creepy music it was just a quiet dark room with something lurking in the shadows
I'm a massive horror fan and I was insanely afraid of being in the dark. I think those of us who fear the dark the most are fearful of it because of the irrational draw we have to it
‘Horror is healing’ - this has SO many layers. Horror is like trauma and is uncomfortable and terrifying by nature, but if you work through it properly and find your courage, you come out the other side alive, wiser and able to move forward
not only are they great directors, but they are also great human beings. I could watch them talk for hours. I hope someday they will work together.
doing Frankenstein!! Imagine a really crazy anthology with every contemporary horror director like Derrickson doing one version of the story...
No kidding.. two of my favorites
Don't ask Guillermo Del Toro what petition he signed.
This video could have been 4 hours long and I would have been enthralled the whole time. Two of the best working directors in the genre, I would love to see what else they discussed.
They are great in their Craft.. the best… yes! But what makes you think or say they are great human beings? What’s a great human being?
"Horror can be such an effective mirror" and "We are all monsters at the end of the day, can we live with that?", how accurate words and how monumental lessons from these masters of the genre. Also, the way Mr. Flanagan has reimagined the concept of horror and transformed it into something deeper like sorrow and pain... wow.
Flanagan uses horror in such an incredible way to deal with our deepest fears and as a tool to reconcile ourselves. del Toro has one of the greatest visual styles in the genre. You can tell by how they talk just how good they both are at this, and how they both "get it" so to speak. I would love to see the rest of this conversation.
I like Flanigan... he does good work... but "reimagined horror"? might be a bit of a stretch. He does load more melodrama (and dialogue) than most horror auteurs, I'll give him that. But I disagree that he "reinvented the wheel" for horror.
Flanagan wearing a "una película de Guillermo del Toro" shirt is just great
I noticed that too!!
I wish this went on for an hour.
Mike said the interview is actually two hours long, but this is what they uploaded :(
same
Yes!!!
I could listen to that podcast between these great horror auteurs for dayssssssss
@@Javivenrelease the unedited cut!
8:30 i love that guillermo mentions horror that makes you cry and learn about yourself. that's exactly what mike's Midnight Mass was for me. terrifying, but also cathartic. i love how he describes that kind of horror as "frescos" because it's just so fitting. i'm in love with this interview. i need the full 2 hour cut!
"horror is healing." I love Guillermo del toro so much. He gets it.
When Flanagan talked about how being afraid of the dark or to go alone in the dark as a kid explains so much about his projects. Looking at how he plays with the idea of things lurking in the darkness in his shows and movies is among the best I've seen from any director.
Horror truly is healing. I couldn’t agree more. As a horror fan - there’s something comforting about the genre. What a fantastic interview.
Midnight Mass is so beautiful. The greatest insight to Religion and faith i have ever seen.
As a minister's kid watching it was absolutely astounding, I know some people complain about his monologues but I think they're incredible. And the hymn montage at the end...literal chills
"Hatred and fear are mirrors, love is windows." Damn that is deep. I love GDT. These guys are the top of their genres.
Loved this conversation, but as a librarian all the books being backwards on the shelf is my worst fear
Thank you! Wonderful directors, wonderful work and yet I couldn't stop looking at the books!!
I knew there was something not quite right about them but was too focused on the conversation to figure it out.
I know!! Worse than ordering them by colour (I will die on this hill)
it's very disturbing
Thank you! It's just... it's just not right
I'd give anything to have a full documentary of just them two talking about horror I love this😭
A co-taught Masterclass 🤩
@@AstraeaAntiope that would be AMAZING. I'd give all the money I have for that to happen 😭
Two of my favorite horror directors...what a delight!
Please give me a solid 2 hours of these two, please. I love their work!
Cabinet of Curiosities is the itch I couldn’t scratch since Tales from the Crypt. Guillermo del Toro, thank you for bringing us this much needed horror anthology series🙏
GDT's Frankenstein would be the most incredible film ever made. I would weep for joy if that happened.
I can only imagine how incredible del Toro's version of Dr Frankenstein's lab would be. He has such an amazing visual style
It's happening! Get excite!
please give the full 2 hours. i would watch it all. these two are brilliant.
Damn, what a fascinating insight into the minds of two masters of horror this was! I watched Mike Flanagan's whole body of work, and quite a lot of Guillermo del Toro's movies, too... I have always been inexplicably drawn to horror, even as a child! I remember picking the latest Goosebumps novel as a kid and anticipating the moment when I could finally sit down and read it ahaha
I think a lot of what they both said about horror being healing is spot on. We could even look at the lovers of this genre as people who constantly seek self-therapy! I, for one, know that I'm sort of capable of alienating my stress and anxiety whenever I experience someone else's demons... Momentarily delegating MY demons to the screen/written page. In short, the true purpose of horror IS to make you feel less alone, just not in a scary, hopeless way.
i love mike flanagan so frickin much.... he has redefined the genre of horror...
Nah that Guillermo del toro
@@DA-wg5cz I think both are good answers. Two masters at work here.
Absolute masters of their craft. I’ll watch anything Flanagan puts out, and I would see Del Toro’s Frankenstein on the biggest screen I could find opening night.
God I want these two to work together so badly Guillermo is great with creature horror while Flanagan nails the emotional horror
Can we get the full version? This is great. I want to watch everything.
Two legends of the craft, amazing filmmakers, storytellers and all around artists. Could listen to a 5 hour version of this with no problem.
Del Toro is such a legend for directing, I hope he’s around for another 20-30 years.
Would love to meet Guillermo, he seems so passionate and loves what he does. Mike Flanagan is the most laidback normal dude I’ve ever met, super cool guy, no idea how he comes up with the horror he does
I think i cried with this conversation between this two cinema munsters. It’s amazing what this both directors have achieve in movies.
The book geek, horror freak, movie nerd in me is living for this conversation.
This is great. Netflix, release the whole conversation, please!
The idea of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein sounds like an incredible idea. I'll be there opening night.
I just love listening to Guillermo del Toro speak.
Two kings respecting each other and their craft. We love to see it!
Netflix: PLEASE make some sort of series with these two masters. It can literally be just them in conversation every episode
I could listen to them for hours! 💙
Netflix needs to make so much more of these ! Iconic directors talking to each other! It's such a treat!!! More!!!
Pinocchio is such a deep and visionary story. I always feel it is under-appreciated and ravished (Disney). Luckily we are going to see a good version of it soon enough. Thank you, Guillermo. Big fan :)
The cabinet of curiosities is such a great show, I'm loving it so far.
I would absolutely lose my mind if I saw these two legends in real life. Just finished both of their new series this month. C of C was great monster horror/character design. The last episode had me in tears. TMC was classic Flanagan. I loved "Road to Nowhere".
This was an incredible conversation. It's my dream to have ten minutes to speak with either of them. Mr. del Toro's work was so transformative for me as a teen and young adult, and it is a treat to watch anything he creates at all. And then Mr. Flanagan I discovered later, but his work is just as important to me.
What a phenomenal interview! You can really tell why they’re the absolute best at their craft
Mike Flanagan has created the most beautiful art I've ever seen. Hill House is an artistic and emotional experience the likes of which I've never experienced before. I was a broken mess when it ended, I cried and cried and cried. And it probably changed my life in several ways. And I've talked with others who had similar experiences with it. Mike has touched the hearts of so many and we're all just so grateful.
Release the full conversation! This is some fascinating stuff
A collab with these two would be a dream come true.
me encanta cuando Guillermo dice "una vez hablando con Garcia Marquez..."
i felt like i just sat down listening to the best philosopy class of my entire life! so glad i am present in this class.
Flanagan's Dr. Sleep baseball boy death scene left me scarred for life like nothing else in film. Seems like a humble guy too.
And Del Toro is a poet.
That scene is equally heartbreaking and horrifying. The whole film is pretty great
These two need to do a series together where they talk about horror and literature.
Are you listening Netflix? This idea, right here.
I love that we’re living in a time with 2 visionary horror directors like them
NOTHING I love more than listening to true icons talk abt their work/ personal feelings. Btw, would give almost anything to hear an interview like this w Stephen King
I love that they close by promoting each other’s respective debuts!
Oh my goodness, I'm so excited to see these two together! 😃
i cannot express enough how much i love Guillermo del Toro...his creations make me feel so much♥
This is great - release the full uncut conversation please!!
Two of my favorite filmmakers together. What a gift this is!
I always love watching these two speak, when their eyes light up with joy about a subject
I could listen to them talk all day, more of this, please!
Mike Flanagan's face during this conversation is basically me watching this interview.
I’m here a year later and still so sad Midnight Club was cancelled. For anyone who watched the show I recommend reading the book it’s based off of. It was a wonderful story. Not so much horror, but a beautiful story about life and death.
Would love an extended cut of this interview! Two of my favorite directors working today
Two of my favorite creative people, love pretty much everything they ever put to film. The contrast between them is quite funny though, Mike Flanagan is such a unassuming regular guy, I can picture him in pretty much any shop from middle school teacher to car salesman. Listening to him talk doesn't reveal the depth of creativity and mastery he can put on film (I'm not meaning this in a negative way).
Guillermo del Toro is the best horror director of these days
Mike Flanagan having the widest smile while talking to Guillermo makes me feel kinda proud that he's Mexican like me. And it's funny because I would have that same smile if I was talking to Mike. We need the full two hours, pleeeeeeaaaaaase
I would’ve gladly listened to an hour long conversation between this two geniuses!
such lovely people
Two of the most inventive creators of today. ❤
I’ll admit I’m not a big horror person though loved Hill House and Bly Manor. But people who do things in horror fascinate me. Every interview I’ve seen with a writer, director or actor who’s main thing is horror is always fascinating to me.
The best horror filmmakers today tend to be very sweet and kind hearted at their core.
That endlessly fascinating to me.
I unabashedly love del Toro. He's so unassuming, compassionate, articulate, and deeply profound without ever seeming as though he's even remotely trying to be any of those things.
Guillermo del Toro just seems like the coolest dude
This entire conversation has been a treat ❣️
Anyone noticed that Flanagan deals with the theme of death most prominently in his shows? Obviously people die, but it's more about the characters and them coming to terms with the fact that they will die or that they must deal with loss.
Both of these series absolutely rock and I really really hope Cabinet Of Curiosity’s continues thru multiple years.
Dos personas increíbles! Mi admiración total para ambos! Abrazos desde Ecuador! Two amazing people! My total admiration for both of you! Hugs from Equator!
Mike Flanagan should direct a short in cabinet of curiosities' next season
Thank god these 2 are around to make films and series. Much love.
This video should have been at least an hour for such talented creatives!!!! Really enjoyed The Midnight Club and looking forward to GDT's Cabinet of Curiosities.
I really wish they dug into their past original works (instead of series they're overseeing), but I'm glad we at least got this much of the two masters together!
I'm obsessed with Frankenstein and would love to see his take on the story!!!
two of my favorite directors of all time!
i could listen to these two talk for an horror theyre so nice and charming and clearly admire and respect each other deeply. i appreciate GDT telling him not to revel the books he gives him, but i want to know!
Absolutely loved this interview!! Had to watch it again!
What he said about Blade 2 is exactly why I want him back for the new reboot of the character
Big fan of both of these legends. Such a good discussion!
Funnily enough, for me the piece of media that I was expecting to keep me frightened, only to end up crying my heart out for two entire days, was The Haunting of Hill House. It really moved me.
Such a cool conversation to sit in on! I could listen to these two talk for hours.
Fascinating! Two of the greatest minds in horror history. Bravo!!!
two fantastic filmmakers, really loved this discussion
I love the Orphanage & Pans Lambrynth by Guillermo & Bly Manor&Midnight Mass by Flannigan!
What an amazing duo!!! I’m so glad this collaboration happened!!!! 🖤🖤🖤
My wife doesn’t get why I love horror as a genre so it was very validating to hear my favorite directors/writers tell me I wasn’t a total psychopath
😂😂😂 me too. My family even feared me cooking them a meal. I mean c'mon, i am not gonna "in cold blood" my own family...
I absolutely loved Cabinet of Curiosities! The whole series. I very much hope Guillermo Del Toro will get the $$$ he needs for making At the Mountains of Madness.
I would love to see both of them working on a project, be a film or series :) Netflix, please make it happen !
I love Guillermo and I want him to make a movie about a Latin American folklore creature.
I could listen to these two talk all day about horror. Frankenstein is a masterpiece and a must read for anyone. I would love to see Guillermo del Toro tackle that one, but first, At The Mountains Of Madness, please, or The Call of Cthulhu or Shadow Over Innsmouth.
the spookiest thing in this video is the bookshelf in the background with the book spines turned the opposite way
Imagine a colab of these two.
Toro is also a leviathan fan of Cosmic Horror (mainly Lovecraft). So awesome.
This was nice to see. I enjoyed hearing them talk about these topics.
The two other people needed in this convo are Stephen King and Junji Ito.
