"It's an expression of your empathy. When you get scared watching someone else in a scary situation, you're putting yourself in their shoes. That's the beautiful thing about horror. It lets us be brave in a very controlled way. The more we expose ourselves to it, the more courage we grow. And the more we get used to worrying for other people and their safety, and being able to see through their eyes -- I think horror has a really beautiful benefit to the world. It's also just really fucking fun."
The way Mike "hates scary stuff" but he's established himself as a horror genius with the masterpiece that is "The Haunting of Hill House" is pretty ironic 😂 PS. And Ouija: Origin of Evil.
I think it's pretty inspiring. I've always hated horror, it fucks me up too much, but in the las year or two I've taken notice to how incredible story telling can be through the horror genre, and I owe part of that to Mike Flanagan and hillhouse/bly/midnight mass. As a writer my passion was always for fantasy but his works have inspired me to want to write horror despite the fact that it scares the shit out of me.
It's still wild to me because my first exposure to Rahul is as 'Funhaus Hollywood Bad Boy' who was terrified of playing horror games and always pulled in to play one. Now he's a huge star and seeing him being fawned over is both funny and great to me. I hope more people check out his vids with Funhaus because they'll change your life 😂
I agree I’ve only ever known him from Funhaus but he’s actually a very good actor, he was one of my favs in Midnight Mass, I hope to see him star in many more roles definitely has the acting chops
Rahul was great in iZombie so happy he keeps getting work from Flanagan. Also funny seeing them play this game considering how close the theme in RE8 to Midnight Mass is. Both are about isolated towns pretty much ruled by a religious leader who wants to share a "gift"
Dude cannot agree more. His monologue in Midnight Mass was victorious. And that split in his eyebrow.... Cmon! I keep trying to find some fan edits related to him but there are none. We should start!
That car scare in "Hill House"...funny thing was I was expecting it, just not like that...full disclosure I still shat myself! You guys make a great team.
I love Mike's understanding of horror. The fact that he doesn't like scary stuff and HATES jump scares I feel makes his stuff scarier then almost anything in the last 20 years. To bring it back to Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami hates (Or at least hated, idk about now) horror. He doesn't like being scared. That's why I think the original 4 games and the remake worked absolutely fabulously even though technically he was only involved with 2 of them physically and produced the rest
Mike's so right about jump scares evaporating the tension. I always laugh after a jump scare because half the time it wasn't an actual scary thing, it was just something mundane.
"I hate jump scares" Mike Flanagan had the biggest jump scare of them all IMO. Hill House in the car. I almost started crying because my nerves were so shot.
Filming Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass Rahul: "Are we acting?" Mike: "You're acting, I'm just watching you through my fingers, because that's kinda how I handle this kind of stuff"
Speaking of horror games, that 'optimal jumpscare' Flanagan is something I'd realized on my own with P.T., back from 2014. The most terrifying jumpscare (OF THAT YEAR PROBABLY) first confuses you with complete silence, just a visual turn, and then the worst banging noise I've ever heard slams into the headphones when the brain fully realizes what's happening.
I always wondered why Kojima did that but Mike explaining it shows just how brilliant Kojima is as well. Like how Kojima was making Silent Hills with Guillermo del Toro, I feel it he even cooler of Kojima and Mike made some horror content together with it be film, a show or a game.
God I love Mike Flanagan. He understands his genre so well, unlike the majority of today’s well known horror directors. I could listen to him talk about movies forever.
Ya'll should have had them play the baby scene just because I would LOVE to see them react to THAT. I would also love to see them playing the Demo of Mortuary's Assistant cause its literally the embodiment of what Rahul said about "you turning the corner you dont want to turn"
I wanna hang out with these two! Mike Flanagan's my fave horror filmmaker and Rahul is an amazing actor. Pls cast him in a western film if you ever get to make one!
The haunting house jump scare in the car, snd sll the ones hes done in sny of his shows are the best ive ever seen in sny film or tv, because its earned. Its built up, snd the paranoia in between in earned.
I don't usually like jump scares in horror films. In contrast, many scary video games have the ability to procedurally create jump scares simply from the free movement and interaction with the environment. Those jump scares I like.
9:26 I did that with "Skinamarink". Something about that movie made me avoid looking at the entire screen, just in the corner through my fingers. I also nearly terminated the sound, watched it during the day with extrsa light in my home and pressed the arrow key to fast forward five seconds. Terrified me.
What I wouldn't *give* to have a Mike Flanagan Resident Evil series with each season a full adaptation of each game in the classic trilogy.
