- Trauma affects EVERYONE. From war-torn nations to quiet suburbs, the effects of traumatic events are the same, and they’re heartbreaking. The silver lining? Healing from trauma is not only possible, you can become a kinder, more connected, and resilient person because of it. Dr. James Gordon will show you how.
In this MarieTV, Dr. Gordon explains how everything from injury, illness, divorce, or losing a loved one, to the extended stress and uncertainty of living through a global pandemic, can trigger a trauma response. You’ll learn how trauma affects your brain and body, five symptoms you might be experiencing right now, plus four simple practices to reverse the stress response and heal your trauma - for good.
Dr. Gordon is a Harvard-educated psychiatrist, former researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, and chair of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. He's spent the past five decades working to help us all learn how to heal trauma and turn it into post-traumatic growth. He's written for countless publications like “The New York Times,” “The Washington Post,” and “The Atlantic,” and has authored ten books, including Marie’s personal favorite, “Transforming Trauma.”
“Trauma will come to everyone sooner or later,” says Dr. Gordon. Watch this episode now to equip yourself with proven tools for healing - so you’re ready when it does.

@@reg8297 you might find some help if you read his book
Thanks so much
THANK YOU
I love Jim Gordon. I trained with him 25 years ago and never tire of listening to his wisdom and knowledge. I think the greatest reminder is that trauma is a normal part of the human experience and as we recover and heal from our trauma, we can gain tremendous strength, resilience and insight. We can come out of the shadows, let go of any shame and be proud of our personal growth
I had to watch him laughing on repeat. It was just so joyful.
What a wonderful light yet so deeply profound conversation! Thank you Marie and Sir Gordon. THIS was exactly what I needed today!
"If one change is possible, then other changes are possible"...the power of starting small.
I've just watched this as I was feeling excruitingly isolated and lost...I'm literally miles from anyone but with my parents, but we're not close at all...I can't self entertain any more...I feel so closed down, I just don't feel safe at home...I'm not sure why I'm telling you this, I just needed to write it out...
@@Froglet1968 Sharing always helps ease the pain...I get it, but please reach out to support providers in your area if you're not feeling safe at home or anyone you can talk things out with. You've got this.
He really is a treasure. So pleasant and relaxed. Confident and caring. His work seems effective
This is absolutely fabulous and helps me put even more into context for my own wellness journey. This makes complete sense especially when I ditched processed foods and brought in more energy work end 2016 and into 2017 and for the first time in years I was able to loose weight in a very healthy way AND have kept it off still!!! Total 60lbs and even more inches!!! This is something everyone should learn :D
I never thought suicide could land in my home not because I thought it only happened to "those " people but was shocked to see how many people thought that my child must have been "troubled" child. She was not. She was a bright, articulate child full of dreams and plans to impact the world. After she was raped by 4 males, a photo taken and distributed of her assault and the harassment that followed kept her in a place of trauma. 17 months of struggle to get justice, to attempt to stand back up she died. :( Trauma impacts all and YES, we can move thru trauma and reclaim our life again. Now, I share my journey to help others move in their trauma. Thank You for this interview. Time does not heal anything but doing the work does.
Leah, we're so sorry for your loss. Thank you for bravely sharing your experience with all of us here. May her memory be a source of love for you always. - Heather
I have just recently become aware of Dr James Gordon, but I must say that he seems like a gem of a person. A warm hearted and giving person, and he expresses his points so clear too.
Thank you for this episode!
I really needed to hear this. Just taking a couple of breaths made a massive difference.
I was in a bit of a funk eating potato chips to distract myself from what I was feeling, but this worked so much better. Thank you so much 💜
Biggest insight - 1 Believe it is possible to change and feel and be better
2 - actually take action and DO the work. Get yourself into a better state and the rest will follow.
I have been deep-diving into my own 'experiments' this year because of pretty scary health issues and trauma reflection. So grateful for this interview and ones like it. It makes me feel not alone.
This was magical: after 35 years I shared a major trauma I experienced as a child for the first time. It has wrecked my childhood and adulthood, but I couldn't find the words up till now. Within 24 hours of sharing this, which was an healing ánd hard experience in itself, I found this in my inbox. 😭🥰😭🥰. What a gift! 💖🙏
Sending you so much love. Thank you for sharing these words. - Heather
What an amazing conversation!!! That things are healable, we're not doomed. That are things we can do including diet, movement, and even laughter. Thank you both ❤❤❤
I believe the we as humans are resilient. Great work he is doing!
Imagine ppl that are dealing with the covid traumas on top of childhood traumas and lifes traumas prior 😢 to the covid traumas whats shitty is ppl with traumas prior to this global mess trying everything under the sun to heal and trying to heal during al of this 🥲 🙏 praying for healing for All dealing with trauma and able to live and thrive thank you to this dr he’s awesome and what a blessing
Laughter is the best medicine!🤣. Thank you both ❤️
When he talks about journalling, I was able to connect the dots between a technique that the Crappy childhood Fairy teaches called “the daily practice” where you start your day by writing out your fears and resentments - this talk has helped me understand how and why that’s effective. Great conversation!
I also Meditate & Dance💃🦋💯 that make me Happy. If I don't Dance I don't Feel Good. Yep journaling also helps👏 It's important to understand urself than only you can understand others 👍💯
WOW this single podcast has so much deep knowledge and wisdom! It just motivated me to continue my own healing process which contains many ups and downs, downs which sometimes make me feel hopeless and helpless. but hearing this podcast just made me optimistic again about being on the right path and seeing light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm deeply appreative and grateful for people like you, sharing this help freely. 🙏
I needed to hear this today. Thank you.
Many thanks fabulous Marie for yet another highly valuable episode. So many great insights and "a-ha" moments! What Dr James Gordon said is priceless! Another golden nugget comes from your uncle Angelo: "When you know better, you do better!" A million heartfelt thanks and keep up the excellent work! 😍🙏😍
My biggest insight is talking with your emotions. This is a super tipp. And I am going to imlement that in my life. It makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you so much.
You always come with the fire thanks 🙏
Fabulous podcast thank you both so much. 💗
I started laughing so hard when he busted out laughing! Ahhh a good laugh just really does lighten your mood!

To anyone reading this message
Hi you...
You are a strong person.
You are loved and you are an important person.
You will be successful in your life process.
Its OK to be not perfect because there will never be a perfect human.
But whatever it is you have to work hard
to show the best version of yourself.
You are not alone in living your life,
there will always be love and love from God
without you realizing it in your every breath.
God loves you
even more than you understand.
Don't feel unloved, unwanted, unappreciated
and never feel useless.
You just need a little time to understand all this process
and you need to work a little hard
to run after your goal
and get your dream back.
I pray that it will be easy for you.
Calm your heart. Enable your soul to face all the trials of God.
May you continue to be bestowed with long-lasting sustenance.
Make your happiness easy.
My strong and passionate greetings to you
who go through this difficult life journey
but we all can definitely stand at this point
and step forward for God's promises that we must have.
I love a strong soul like you
You are a great person because you are still able to survive until this moment
with this not easy process
Hi you.....
Every human being is given the same advantages as God
find and develop the advantages that you have so that with it your self-confidence, sense of worth and a sense of desire will grow in you.
Sad and disappointed human, it's natural and
allowed, what is not allowed is that you dissolve in your sadness and your adversity
Hi you.....
Last but not least, keep up the spirit, keep going, keep growing, good luck in all of your goals. I'm proud of you personally who have this strong soul😍😘🤗

The laughter got me.
This is a topic I am looking for..
Just ordered this book after watching this!

Good topic ❤️
This is so funny and useful information thankyou
Amazing✨
I have been trying to figure out what could have caused leaky gut for me when I don't eat any of the aggrivators. Oh yeah - I've been in a pressure cooker of stress for almost 2 years. THAT'S WHY! Thank you for this wisdom!
I love this interview! Very helpful and insightful. Also fun...which I didn't expect from a conversation about trauma. Thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I will be buying the book. Does anyone know of it would work well as an audiobook? I just looked; it's available as an audiobook and I recognise it's likely personal preference...I just wondered if anyone has some insight? Thanks in advance 🙏🏼💕
Great info Marie. Trauma isn't as bad if we can make memes out of it.
Wish I coukd today can barely stand up after lifelong abuse of my evil mother.
I found this was valuable, but I have a question about the randomized trial mentioned early on - how was that conducted? That teens in wartime were purposely denied these workshops? How did they construct the control group? Other than that question, this was very interesting and heartening.
Not purposely denied. As in most studies, there are only so many slots available. Funding is always limited. He is not discussing government funded social policy
📒🥰 lovely
