How-To Spray CLEARCOAT Like a Professional! Atom X21 and Atom X27 Review

  • We’re taking off the fineline tape, which is the dark blue tape you see on video now. The fineline tapos is used when you’re making graphics, pinstriping, flames or simply separating colors when you’re doing multi tone paint jobs.
    We’re done with our three-tone paint job and now we’ll be painting our clearcoat next. We’re getting there and it’s looking great. Enjoy the video!
    As you can see, we have an overspray, which is not a big deal because the entire bed will be raptor lined. At this stage, the truck is not complete.
    The raptor liner is an awesome product. I would definitely use it again for undercoating or for bed liners. It is really durable and I love it.
    We had a light overspray in an area of the truck. I’m not happy about it, but the only way to fix it is to try and wipe it out.
    However, you can still see it. You can try to sand it, but the best way is to mask it and dust it with base again. Since it’s a dual color layer, it’s a difficult one, so I’m not going to worry about it.
    Another easier option is to try to hide it with pinstripping. I can put a black pinstripe in between. I think black looks cool.
    When you use a tack rag, make sure to open it up all the way, then fold it up with a palm size square. Tack everything down before you shoot it.
    Make sure not to push too hard with the tack rag and do it lightly because you’ll get the glue over the panels.
    I’m using the House of Kolor Clearcoat system. I love this brand because they make high quality clearcoats.
    We’ll put two medium heavy coats on the mini truck and we’ll also be using the Atom X21 Spray Gun. I like to spray at around 28-29 psi, trigger pulled looking at the gauge with wide open fan.
    If you want to grab your own Atom X21 Spray Gun, check out Zoolaa and grab your own now.

    Little tricks someone taught me for painting in a garage where environment can't be controlled: 1: Cover the walls and ceiling with roll plastic (the static-y the better), and dust floating around will be attracted to the plastic. 2: wet the floors down with a mop and be generous, right before you spray, and again in between every base and clear coat. 3: Cut 3" pieces of 2" PVC pipe and place them under the car, again, dust nibs will be attracted to the plastic pipe, and not your car.
    I also have turned my garage into a makeshift crossflow booth, I filter incoming air through front windows with furnace filters, and then I just cut a hole in the back wall for a shutter fan. I've turned out some pretty phenomenal paint jobs out of my home garage. Oh, and a big one is lighting. Put lights everywhere, walls, ceilings, etc.

    Dude Tony yeah my X21 smashes on the clear so nice with fluid wide open but I used it for first time on base coat recently and I ended up having to turn the fluid down because it put it on too wet in some small crevices. The X21 has such a dense fan which I love and is great for laying the clear down nice and wet!

      BOSS FLIPPER - Secrets To HIGH PROFIT Car Flipping hey can I spray Urethane base coat over lacquer primer in some some areas by any chance? I tested putting some of the primer on an old door and then put some of the base coat over it to test it out to see if there would be a reaction but three to four days later and it still looks fine. So I just wanted you're opinion first before moving forward with painting over the lacquer primer.

    Very nice job on that little truck! It's nice to see it painted in a "garage" and not a booth because most DIY hobby painters don't have access to a booth. It turned out great!! One thing, gloves would be nice when touching the panels (even though your doing a wipe down, hopefully with W&G remover).

    Hey Tony, how do you adjust for flash times when painting in a garage instead of a professional spray booth? I know the data sheet for the clear says 15 minutes but it has to be longer for when I paint in my garage doesn't it?
    Every time I spray I get solvent pops, just a few but it still makes for a lot of work to repair, plus I always get horrendous orange peel, I think I'm spraying to slow and don't know what the layers should look like exactly when laying the clear down. Should every layer look like glass immediately when I spray?
    The solvent pops always show up after I wet sand the orange peel and it's very frustrating. I have no idea how long I need to wait between coats, is an hour too long?

    Tony, I love your videos. I have learned much. Speaking of spraying clear: I have an Anest Iwata LPH400 that I have dedicated to clear coat only. I bought the 3M PPS series 2 gun adapter to use with the PPS series 2 system cups so I could reduce clean up time and use less gun cleaner or lacquer thinner. The PPS2 filter clogs instantly while trying to spray clear. I mixed the clear according to mfg. instructions 4/1/1. 4 parts clear 1 part activator and 1 part reducer. I live in FL so I am using the slow activator. When I remove the screen filter in the lid small clumps of clear come out while spraying. I tried to use the Anest Iwata screen with the PPS2 lid with filter screen removed and the PPS 2 pulls the screen into the cup. Do you have any other suggestions other than buying an Anest Iwata Aluninum cup and using their filter? I have invested much money in the 3M PPS 2 cups etc.

After finish applying the clear coat, i really satisfied with the glossy result.But i found out that my clear coat doesn't completely dry even after 4 hours. It leave a finger print if i touch it( surface feel quite sticky). Is it i did not mix enough hardener into the clear? If so, can i just mix a new clear coat and put another layer on it? or should i sanding it over and start again?

What brand clear are you using and what’s your reduction ratio? These fundamentals are essential and without them the difficulties begin to pile up..keep wacking it out tho...

    • @crossfiregaming9541

      Jay Carr If you watched the video and listened he said he is using a X21 1.4 tip HVLP with House Of Color HS 2k clear coat that cost just under 300$ for the kit. Reduction in the clear? No reduction in the clear coat man why would you do that? If you reduce you're HS clear then just use a Medium Solid clear that's basically what you're turning it into if you reduce you're High Solid Clear Coat.

      could be 10 minutes or 1 hour. you have to touch it and see if it is almost dry. (just a but sticky)... in this heat i wait almost an hour till it is tack free.

      @@hiunghiung6509 with any gun you need a 1.8 spray nozzle because the clear is thick.You need the pressure up at the gun. about 30 to 35 psi. 2 hp may work,but i think you need more air than a 2 hp.

    What are you talking about when you said " The only time you dont want a run is when you are runing with pearl".
    Was confusing because you just popped up with that out of nowhere.

    • @HowToPaintYourCar
      @HowToPaintYourCar  5 лет назад +1

      Meaning, you want to avoid running your paint if you have pearl mixed into your clear or midcoat, because you'll see the PEARL RUN and it can't simply be sanded and buffed out. You will see the pearl in the clear even though it is sanded flat. :) I hope you get it now. I am running a FREE trial of VIP, check it out here my man vip.learnautobodyandpaint.com/special-oto-e

    • @crossfiregaming9541
      @crossfiregaming9541 6 лет назад +1

      Robert Arco You will be fine there are no issues regarding the X21. I have the X21 and X20 and have no issues at all regarding the seals or anything else they are great guns to spray with. I hope you use it soon and enjoy the results. Fyi if using for base you may want to turn the fluid down or just not pull the trigger back all the way you're first coat atleast because it lays it on fast and thick. At least my 1.4 MP LVLP does. Once I turned the fluid down it still put out plenty of paint for coverage moving at a good speed. For the clear coat though it's perfect to have fluid wide open and trigger fully pulled. It lays base and clear very nicely as I just used it for base for the first time the other day and had already used it for clear coat multiple times and never had any runs or sags. Wish you luck and hope that you enjoy spraying with the X21!

    • @arcorob
      @arcorob 6 лет назад

      Thank you ..I will experiment. I bought the 3M PPS gun system but I also bought the PPS adapter for the X21. So I am COMFORTABLE with the PPS for primer and I think in turn base coat since it lays on pretty my flat on th epoxy (base should be similar) But I will be doing base/clear on the hood and trunk underside soon so may use the X21 for clear to get a feel for it. Its a LESS obvious area should I have issues :-) ..Thanks for the response !

    Hey Tony I sprayed 2k clear coat about a couple weeks ago on a set of doors. I have wet sanded and buffed them already but the clear is still soft enough to put a divot in it with my finger nail. Curious as to what is causing this. I have left them in the sun for the past week and it seams to be helping some.

    • @crossfiregaming9541
      @crossfiregaming9541 6 лет назад

      Elchingon_92 yo do you have the Hvlp versions or the MP Lvlp ? What was you're problem with the X20? I was having a problem with mine (MP LVLP) but It Was Not the Gun I was spraying at too low of a pressure not realizing that the operating pressure had to be 24psi-36psi and I was trying to spray at 20 and I was just getting a random drop of paint that wasn't atomizing but once I looked at the Manuel and turned up the pressure and man it laid it on perfect!!

    • @crossfiregaming9541
      @crossfiregaming9541 6 лет назад

      Elchingon_92 so I guess what I'm saying is to just make sure that you are spraying at or above the required psi to operate you're guns depending on the model type. I got confused when switching from the X21 to the X20 and just assumed they operated at the same psi.

    • @meanpaintandbody
      @meanpaintandbody 6 лет назад +1

      Jared Causey the problem i hade with the x20 waa that it would not spray clear at any psi it would spray like dry and it would look bad i could not even make it run so i got a hi flow fitting that helped but then i was shooting heavy at the botton and left the tip in thinner for about 2 days and nothing so i started playing with the tip and moved it up side down and the heavy spot moved up so i just order a new tip and it fixed it i talked to tony he offered to take a look at it but it was just faster to buy a tip

    • @meanpaintandbody
      @meanpaintandbody 6 лет назад +1

      Jared Causey with the x21 it sprays smaller fan and takes a lot of cfms to work with the 1.4 it shoot more paint and i liked that
