YES, VIVE LA SCIENCE. Mate that is a great and very clear fix. THANK YOU so lets see if I have distilled this right...If its peely then you can. * Up the pressure, (but not too much or it will go dry yes?) * Get closer (but dont go too slow or it will run) * Thin the material ( but not too much or you'll get runs, reduce the gloss, get solvent pop) Have I got that right? Mate the TAFE should be sending their teachers to YOU for "proper" training. Keep up the great work and dont think for a minute that we dont all appreciate it. Cheers
I just painted my 1969 Chevy C10 and it came out nearly perfect thanks to the sharing of your exceptional insight and skills. Reduced the clear. Set the gun up full spray. Turned out the fluid 4 turns and kept the gun 5cm from my work. Hardly even a hint of orange peel. I have 3 small sags/runs on the entire truck. Have to look hard to see them. Thank you very much! Your video's are totally awesome! Keep up the good work.
I've been looking for avoiding the "OEM Finish" orange peels but to spray the clear as flat as possible so that I can delivery custom motorcycle paints (especially the dark windshield) with minimal sanding and buffing. Found nothing until I saw your "double it" approach in another candy paint video and the using of slow reducer and info in this video. Really saved my day, great thanks.
Years later and this is still an amazing informative video. I love the science experiment feel with different variables. Just bought a '63 Ford F600 I can't wait to pain. Thanks for the video!
Just wanted to say a mahoosive thanks for this video. People normally make instructional videos simply to say ‘look at me’ I’ve just bought an HVLP gun to paint my road bike after someone keyed it. Was struggling with consistency and orange peel and couldn’t understand why Moving the gun closer and working with a better spray pattern... my frame looks like it just rolled off the line. Thanks again mate, legend!!
Thanks for your channel. I recently discovered your channel and subscribed after watching a few...and it just keeps on getting better for me as I delve into the watching the plethora of videos you have uploaded. As many others have said, it is really appreciated the time and effort that you put into your posts. Of course, all the time and the effort means nothing if the quality of the content is not worthy of the time and effort. Your content is very high quality and very worthwhile. Real world applications, problems and solutions. Kudos to you. This topic reminds me of an incident quite a few years ago when my daughter backed into a car., owned by a young man visiting a neighbour. A very good friend, who is a spray painter, offered to fix the other vehicle, only asking my daughter just for the cost of the materials (at my insistence. He would have done it for free, but I insisted she needed to learn from her mistake. A real world lesson as she was only 18). As a non-spray tech, I thought the young man's car looked nice. The young male owner who was fresh out of high school and thought he knew everything about the world, including how to spray paint a car.... because his car had recently been resprayed. He proceeded to criticise the quality of the repair work. Now my friend is an automotive paint rep for a paint distributor and his job was showing paint shops how to paint his company's paint products. He has been in the game since he was 18 (and was mid 50's at that time). It is safe to say he knew his stuff. What followed was a critique of this young man's criticism of the repair. This dissection included such details as you are demonstrating in this video about the quality of the resultant clearcoat matching the existing clearcoat on the vehicle. As my friend said "I can easily adjust my repair work to get the finish/quality of the clearcoat, to have less orange peel, but then it will look better than the rest of your (shitty) paint job. By the time my friend was finished the young man realised that the quality of his new full respray was not as good as he first thought it was after all. Gulp. That was real world schooling for the young man who thought he knew everything. LOL Anyway, thanks again from a new subscriber located in Brisbane, Australia.
Thanks Gunman. It's noticible the amount of time and effort you put you these videos. As apprentice and an amateur in body repair and painting, your videos have helped me so much! Thanks a million man ! I hope someday I'll be able to paint like you do!
Absolutely appreciated your time and effort. It is very rare when someone educating this way, with examples etc. and not just "playing the professional"! Thank you!
We are ever grateful for the time you take to teach us all professionals. Your videos have been an eye opener for all of us. Heartfelt thanks from India for taking such an enormous effort to teach us something new everytime. God bless your family. Warm Regards On behalf of all professionals who learn from you
Awesome video Gunman. I've watched it many times, and I always to return to it for reference. I'm the in-house detailer for a luxury car showroom located on the Costa-del-Sol in Spain and over the years I've corrected hundreds of paint jobs, both factory and refinished paint, on some of the worlds finest cars. But I always felt that I needed to learn how to paint and extend my professional capabilities. Well thanks to you I've just recently taken my detailing services to the next level and started spraying paint. Thanks a million for your awesome instructional videos Gunman. You're the best on RUclips!
So I painted a car without watching this first.... big mistake. A major problem was my cheap 3 in a pack auto parts store gun. They look the part but after watching this, the spray pattern was terrible. Tried heaps of different things. Still just as bad. Today my first effort with a $150 Star 1.4mm tip and new gun. Massive improvement, almost no peel and shiny as. Thanks Gunman for taking the time to show how to do it right and explaining why my paint looked terrible (like the first sample you sprayed) to looking like a pro job. Is it perfect? Nope. Will it get scratched at the shopping centre? Yes. I think that is a win. Now to find my next project. And do it right from the start.
Great job with the videos. I've been painting cars on and of for years . But I haven't painted anything for over 5 years and just starting to get back into it now , It's great to be able to get some pointers . Thanks Carl
I'm a home shop new painter, and as I work through my project ('72 C20), I come back to review this and several other of your videos~ outstanding help! Thank you!
I know this video is a lil old but just wanted to thank you for taking time to do these. I for one really appreciate it. They have helped me tremendously.....
Well this is probably the best video on clear coat on the net. Heres what you get when you do this. Crazy how no one e er did this before. You gotta know why your clear is not right so you can fix it. Thanks so much. This video cured my orange peel issue.
I can tell you put allot of time and planning in making this video. It was really much appreciated. I enjoyed seeing the different parts of the panel using different settings and distance. It turned out to be a very educational video thanks :)
Thanks for your videos. As a complete self taught car restorer I am beginning to get some acceptable finishes. Thanks for your help at improving my skills.
This is why I watch lots of time and effort in this video .I have been afraid to go up on the reducer for fear of the clear coat not lasting but I want to try it at 20 percent .
Thanks for the tremendous work testing this. I got a lot of orange-peel with a HVLP, painting 2 cars last summer. I didn't think of getting so close, keeping the gun maybe 10" away being more concerned about runs. It was also hot ~90 F in Aug., which some say doesn't help. Fixed it by sanding w/ 1000 grit, then high-cut compound to get flat and dull, then got mirror smooth with finer compounds. Had a few runs and sanded into the primer a few places trying to knock them down, but single-stage (no clearcoat) so was able to touch-up. Used "boat-paint" polyurethane on one (Interlux Brightsides) and automotive polyurethane w/ hardener on the other (Spralac SP150), but orange-peel was about the same (like your middle tests). Interesting how you term European vs Japanese orange-peel. Some of my cars have factory finishes with almost no orange-peel (M-B and Chrysler), which they must get with superfine nozzles and electrostatic attraction since they don't usually do any sanding and compounding. About to paint a third car, and now ~68 F in Nov so will see if these tips plus cooler helps.
Great vids. One can always learn something by watching and listening. One thing I do find is that a second coat of clear flows out better than the first and a third coat even better again. So while a perfectly flat coat is not possible it is possible to get pretty damn close.Keep up the vids. You obviously know your stuff.
Very good video mate. I think it explains very good to less experienced people the idea of "orange peel" and makes it clear that a 100% glass looking finish is not possible out of the gun.
Thanks! Great demo on the interplay between distance, pressure and viscosity. I just laid down a crappy orange peal primer. Obviously 20 cm Was too far away and I was only adjusting viscosity and upping the air pressure a bit. Going to block and retry. Thanks again for the knowledge.
Very helpful to see the various settings/distances! And thank you as I know there is a ton of time and prep goes into this project and you do it selflessly to help - Thank you Gunman!!!
YOU LITTLE CHAMP GUNMAN My questions all answered wish I saw this only a week ago after buggerising around in my shed This video has allowed me to fine tune my result more than I would of thought possible I had no idea you could get such a great finish at 10% reducer at only 5 - 9 cms away from the object Even the low cost 2K clear I tried proved results very close to whats seen in the video
Once it becomes habit it's easy but at the start it seems a bit scary holding the gun so close, speed up the passes and BAM!! awesome paintwork is at your fingertips :-)
Awesome instructional video! Just saved thousands of dollars and a couple weeks of frustration trying to figure it out on our own! Great job and thanks for the effort on your part. Keep up the great work. Cheers from Canada.
I agree with the comments about gratitude for your effort! What an amazing demonstration in the spray booth! I have had horrible results with my hvlp clears and i now know my gun was way way too far away. Thank you so much!
Been painting for 13 years now professionally and this is a great video, all bang on stuff!! I find the gun set up is a big factor and he gun itself, reducer aswell!
thank you! I'm having trouble with budget acrylic enamel and have been battling OP. You gave me some insight to try varying gun distance. However I had problems with stripes when I had gun too close before which has kept me further away which has helped get a uniform result. I will now try to see if I can cut OP and avoid stripes. still learning and thanks again. The clear recommended thinned 4:1 (I do not use hardener) I had cotton candy flying even down to 3:1, 2:1 was better, then I went to 1:1 and even 1:2 I bet you think insane!
you and I are the only ones that have videos on this subject. I put some videos for guys who dont have a booth they can use 16lbs or 1.1 bar and 1/4 in on the fan 2.5 to 3 turns out on the material Tekna pro lite and medium solids 4-1 clear spray gun and hvlp cap this is to get a pretty smooth finish on a flat panel with a tolerable amount of spray dust so you can see to spray in your garage without many fans. better finish than LVLP.
more like this. direct comparisons. This was fantastic. you can take the same idea and create a whole series of direct compares with different settings, different reducers, metallics, pearls, etc etc etc... which honestly, is what is severely lacking on youtube. Or anywhere else for that matter. Seeing is believing..... This video helped a lot.
Had a shop do a total respray on my truck from hail damage. From the go it looked terrible about 2months later it went dull with very little shine. They soaked the insurance Co. $6700. for the job. A couple of drunk guys in there garage over the weekend could have done a better job......I was pissed.!!!!
This will definitely help me out a lot when spraying clear again. I forgot to use thinner the first run, which caused a big orange peel all along the spoiler. Hope I can buff it out later and use this video as a reference for the bumpers. Love your work! Thanks a lot!
Cheers Gunny, We all do appreciate the time and stuffing around you put into your productions. I like the colour on the MGB GT but not a fan of a white engine bay but I'm sure it comes out well. Cheers Cavemanmic
Ran across this video! Thank you for your time spent in educating the masses on proper painting. I've not tried reducer in clear yet but I will try it today. Great video!
Thanks Gunman, this vid is awesome. I can apply you're info to why I'm get orange peel, I spray Pro-line epoxy with 35psi and about 7" away, now the gun will be around 6cm and move a little quicker. Thanks for all your time
Hi, thanks, I spray wood, mainly pre-cat coloured lacquer which i realise now is easy, recently i had to spray some two part PU gloss paint, really struggled not to get orange peel, normally i'd use my ANI guns which work 'ok' but i couldn't get the fine mist you talk about so today i tried my most expense Deviblis gun, it worked great, i now sort of know the difference between the cheap guns n why i had to pay over £100 for the Deviblis.
Another great Gunman production, keep up the great work and keep the videos coming. Looking forward to the LVLP video. Thanks again for taking the time out of your day to do these videos they show your love for the trade.
This video just made my life a lot easier!!! I use a Graco Finefinish help turbine system so I can change tip in addition to pressure and fluid, but I can’t get over 10psi so I may drop down in tip size see if it helps.
This is a phenomenal video and AMAZINGLY HELPFUL. THANK YOU for putting in the time/effort. This is a difficult and complex issue, but your approach clarified the whole mess a LOT.
I cant thank you enough Gunman!Really, you have no idea how much this video has helped me. I really appreciate it,Your time and effort will definitely not go to waste, i wish one day ,i could be as good as you! Thanks!
thanks bro. so, i sprayed a door today. 1.0 mini gun full/full, 5-7cm. 28psi. its ok, but bit peely. after watching your vid i reckon its viscosity (20 deg here in nz) and no reducer (could be thick clear - Lesenol 1028). i can compound it out, but for a walk away finish, next time ill 10% reduce it.
Thank you for taking the time, and a lot of effort to produce this video for us all. Great explanations, I'm sure it'll help me next time I shoot a clear. Thanks
Thanks for this video. I think it helps us to try and manage peel better. It is always more of an art anyway, but there is some science to it. It looked much flatter with the conventional tip, but of course it is a matter of feel, and you can probably replicate almost any peel just by adjusting pressure, distance and speed anyway. However, I think the lower reducing and pressures and thicker clears will always be more peely when they dry.
Really appreciate this video gunman,im studying body and paint at collage, and hope i get as good as you,i enjoy all aspects of this trade, its great. I always tell the other students to check out your channel.
Great video !!! I see a few areas I will be able to improve on. I was using u-pol and Dupont hs clears with 10% reducer or none at all. Could have used a touch more. I will move faster, closer to panels with tighter overlap. Thank you so much for taking the time to produce this helpful video ! Thanks Gunman !
Great video!!!!! Thank you... I really appreciate the time you put into explaining "your science project". I've rented a paint booth and will paint tomorrow. I'm an amateur and have painted a total of 13 (complete) cars. Your videos helped me understand some of the mistakes I've made in the past. Well done!!!!
That was excellent, really informative and well presented. Thanks for take a big chunk of time from your schedule to do such a great video, it's very much appreciated.
Hey brother thanks so much for this video! You really helped me get my spray gun setup. I sprayed a really beautiful job this weekend, thanks to your helpful videos.
I'm new at body work and painting, I've only done the mechanical aspect of autos since I was 15, I'm now 44. I'm restoring my late grandfather's '67 Camaro and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make your videos. I bought a DeVilbiss Finishline 4 gun and haven't used it yet. Gonna shoot some epoxy primer soon. Should I get another gun for the base and clear? Thanks again.
Thanks for doing the vid...you don't really see a lot of clips that detail the specifics of clear coat. I've had a lot of problems with it in the past that were caused by contamination. Thanks again!
Thanks man. I am a beginner and am finding that even in one pass/coat, with the same settings and paint, I am getting 0 orange peel, really really nice and flat, on some areas like the roof, but then really pronounced orange peel on others (like a transition area from roof to rear quarter) even though I think I am using the same distance, speed etc. But it does come out different. More practice I suppose, and grateful for cut and polish.
YES, VIVE LA SCIENCE. Mate that is a great and very clear fix. THANK YOU so lets see if I have distilled this right...If its peely then you can.
* Up the pressure, (but not too much or it will go dry yes?)
* Get closer (but dont go too slow or it will run)
* Thin the material ( but not too much or you'll get runs, reduce the gloss, get solvent pop)
Have I got that right?
Mate the TAFE should be sending their teachers to YOU for "proper" training. Keep up the great work and dont think for a minute that we dont all appreciate it. Cheers
TresMamboMusicSchool Yes, Yes, Yes. Top of the class :-)
Sorry for the stupid question but do these techniques apply to base and clear coat?
King of spray painting on YT
I just painted my 1969 Chevy C10 and it came out nearly perfect thanks to the sharing of your exceptional insight and skills.
Reduced the clear. Set the gun up full spray. Turned out the fluid 4 turns and kept the gun 5cm from my work. Hardly even a hint of orange peel. I have 3 small sags/runs on the entire truck. Have to look hard to see them.
Thank you very much!
Your video's are totally awesome!
Keep up the good work.
Shouldn't get any sags
I've been looking for avoiding the "OEM Finish" orange peels but to spray the clear as flat as possible so that I can delivery custom motorcycle paints (especially the dark windshield) with minimal sanding and buffing. Found nothing until I saw your "double it" approach in another candy paint video and the using of slow reducer and info in this video. Really saved my day, great thanks.
Years later and this is still an amazing informative video. I love the science experiment feel with different variables. Just bought a '63 Ford F600 I can't wait to pain. Thanks for the video!
I am a paint sprayer from few years and i used to learn a LOT from you. Thank you for exchange your experience wit us.
Just wanted to say a mahoosive thanks for this video. People normally make instructional videos simply to say ‘look at me’
I’ve just bought an HVLP gun to paint my road bike after someone keyed it. Was struggling with consistency and orange peel and couldn’t understand why

Mate!!! You're an example of what Aussies were like before the nation became another state of Washington..Thank you for your time and education !!
I could had said it better, spot on.
What? What's wrong with WA?
By click bait. Lol
What does Washington State have to do with any of this?

Single stage paint no clear rape job
I got it. 20@ reducer. 5 inches away. fastback and forth action. A full pattern. 75% overlap. Nice. - thumbs up!
Thanks for your continued help in making us all better painters.
This will definitely help me out a lot when spraying clear again. I forgot to use thinner the first run, which caused a big orange peel all along the spoiler. Hope I can buff it out later and use this video as a reference for the bumpers. Love your work! Thanks a lot!
How did that work for you? I also found this video right about I sprayed a super bumpy first coat on my project.
You are FUCKING awesome buddy. You were made to do this in life, a lot of people can learn from you. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Cheers Gunny, We all do appreciate the time and stuffing around you put into your productions.

I use a Graco Finefinish help turbine system so I can change tip in addition to pressure and fluid, but I can’t get over 10psi so I may drop down in tip size see if it helps.
you hoped we appreciate it? I am only up the 2 minute mark and already cant wait. Thanks for the hard work!
Nice work man ! we should all be honoured with your hard work putting these vids together and explaining so clearly, thanks mate.
Great division of samples. I’ll definitely use these suggestions in respraying some clear on my Airstream argosy end caps!
This is a phenomenal video and AMAZINGLY HELPFUL.
THANK YOU for putting in the time/effort. This is a difficult and complex issue, but your approach clarified the whole mess a LOT.
I had a friend that had his own trick. After he added reducer he put a half ounce of thinner. Try it, test it.
Man that GT looks SO NICE. Great work
Excellent video has cleared up where I went wrong with the last bit of paint I did!
I cant thank you enough Gunman!Really, you have no idea how much this video has helped me. I really appreciate it,Your time and effort will definitely not go to waste, i wish one day ,i could be as good as you! Thanks!
enjoy your time in teaching us how to beautify a proper paint job.
thanks bro. so, i sprayed a door today.
Thanks
Always love seeing a new paint vid upload from you gunman. Keep up the quality videos
Good video, I find that even inspite of following the setup directions, I have to adjust air etc to suit the situation.
Very very helpful
Great vid yet again. You're a natural teacher mate.
Thanks for taking the time to explain this. Haven't seen a video on cut and buffing orange peel, did I miss it.
edsf100 I have a whole playlist on my channel. This link should get you there.

Great video as usual. Lots of great information. I think the right reduction for me will play a big key. Thanks again Gunman.
thanks for taking the time to make this video mate. you've helped me put right where I was going wrong.
Your fans appreciate the effort you give. Thanks G'Man!! Nicely done and explained.
Awesome man. I'm a first year in Sydney so still have a lot to learn. Your videos are helping a lot. Cheers
Great great great video mate!
Thank you for taking the time!
This right here is priceless!
Very professional job.... amazing video 👍
I can not thank you enough for sharing your expertise... THANK YOU!
WOW THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL
Thank you. Very informative.
Cleaaaaan work at the end
good job gunman & thanks for laying down the clear and the pointers. I appreciate your time!
That was excellent, really informative and well presented. Thanks for take a big chunk of time from your schedule to do such a great video, it's very much appreciated.
Thanks for the appreciation man
Great video; I learnt a great deal about that important final finish. Thanks
Great video buddy. So good to see that comparison and appreciate the work and research involved in this video.Cheers
Hey brother thanks so much for this video! You really helped me get my spray gun setup. I sprayed a really beautiful job this weekend, thanks to your helpful videos.
Thanks for taking the time to do this vid ,very insightful
Thanks for watching.
I do recommend having a couple of guns at least one for primer and one for colour/clear
Videos like these take a lot time and effort....thank you for that brother!
Legend man your videos are brilliant - totally appreciate your work.!
Top notch painting video!!! I could of used a video like this year's ago that breaks it down so stupid simple.!
Thanks for doing the vid...you don't really see a lot of clips that detail the specifics of clear coat. I've had a lot of problems with it in the past that were caused by contamination. Thanks again!
Awesome job and I appreciate the time that you put into your videos!
I absolutely appreciate what you take time to show us lot, thanks for it.
Thanks mate I'm glad you appreciate the vids.
Is "orange peel" referring to how much the finish looks like compared to the outside of an orange?
I love Apple Peel.
Great video, very appreciated the detail and time spent here! 5 cm seems so close. Thanks
Excellent video really appreciate you taking the time to make it, helped me paint my boat. Cheers!
Thanks for taking your time to do this video.
Thanks for the time you put into the video. I do videos in my shop occasionally also and I know how much time ot takes. Thanks again!
