He was also my dad’s roommate in college. They hadn’t spoken in years, but a couple years ago my mom and dad went to a concert of his and dad talked to a security person and dropped his name. After talking to Mickey, the security guy brought them backstage and the two of them had some laughs and reminisced. Mom and Dad said Mickey can still hit all the high notes at 70
@@varsitycamplife He sung it because Elvin Bishop said he voice didn't sound good for it and the audience shouldn't have to see an ugly guy singing a good song.

I was in the kitchen when Mickey was warming up without a mic and he sounded as loud as every other singer amplified. Some months later the band invited me to a Christmas party at the guitarists apartment and got to hear Mickey sing in a living room.

Guys I just have to say: thank you for listening to complete songs without interrupting them with comments. It's so frustrating to hear a song broken up with many comments instead of hearing a review of a whole intact song. You guys are the best.
The piano riff for this song was inspired by Toto's "Hold the Line", which was inspired by Sly and the Family Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime". Great musical legacy.
I read they intentionally wrote this to sound like Hold The Line? Maybe it was in Lukather’s book? He might have good naturedly called them out on it! 😂
A&A you'll love Jefferson Starship's "Miracles", "Count On Me" and "Play On Love" !!!!. Jefferson Starship was the best of the 3 iterations of this band IMO. Craig Chaquico did lead guitar on "Jane"! Mickey Thomas sings lead on Jane. edit- Chronologically it was Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship.
"Layin' it on the Line" is another banger...Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship all had great songs...They changed with the times and always stayed relevant...Great band...Great review...Thanks guys...
Craig Chaquico is on blazing guitar, I saw him in the Jefferson Starship and he was an amazing player, with endless runs at times that kept morphing into similar but not the same segments, they played 3 hours that night including the entire Blows Against the Empire album. Those guys plus Grace Slick still had it in the 70s, before she was overcome by her alcoholism and was fired by the band. She was magnificent when I saw them, both with Jefferson Starship and the Jefferson Airplane (she did chilling versions of While Rabbit both times, I can still see her piercing eyes as she belted out that unreal tune). Nice song in Jane, always loved it and Mickey Thomas sure was great as the new singer. More of all of the above and also how about some Hot Tuna some time? The other spinoff from the Jefferson Airplane with Jorma Kakonen on guitar and Jack Cassidy on bass, those guys could jam with the best of them, I saw them back then and they played for 4 hours with a 45 minute Walking Blues as the encore included. Try Hit Single #1 from them, it is a banger! Enjoy. 👍👍
Those smiles and shaking heads in dismay about what just happened! Excellent. Glad you enjoyed it so much. I always thought it was a great ("ripping" is correct) rock song, without caring about Airplane's hippie legacy.
I’ve been waiting for this reaction! This song is in my top all time favorites. I like the last part with the “Janey, Janey, Janey, Jane” I loved your facial expressions throughout the song.
I'm surprised you two didn't give this one an S, truly deserving of one! The vocals, groove, guitars, piano, drums, backing vocals, all combine to slap everybody and their mama.
If you’re paying attention, you can absolutely hear/feel the connection between Jane, & Hold The Line, by Toto! Piano, power chords, fantastic upper register vocals, and SMOKIN’ Guitar work. I’m glad you guys got back into Rock N Roll after some… shall we say dubious, selections recently (my opinion only, I’m sure). This one is a total banger. Probably S tier for old dudes like me who was 13 when this came out!
This song IS rock and roll. As a female, can confirm, it has that effect. EDIT: This whole era had some bangers, I recommend Winds of Change, Find Your Way Back, Stranger.
I've been waiting for the boys to finally find their way to this! 😂 That reaction was totally worth it. "Find Your Way Back" is another essential from the same era. Mickey Thomas is simply killer. The arrangement on "Jane" really is rock and roll perfection. ❤
So Grace Slick was battling the bottle and eventually the bottle won. At a show in Germany in 1978, she basically embarrassed herself and got pulled from the tour. Then, when the tour finished, co-lead singer Marty Balin decided he'd had enough crap and quit. Then, drummer John Barbata (formerly of the Turtles and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young) got into a horrific car wreck, needed 2 years to rehab, and ultimately retired. So the band needed to reconfigure. Luckily, Aynsley Dunbar had just quit as the drummer for Journey and was glad to trade up the San Francisco band pyramid (Journey were only starting to get hot), so that was one problem solved. And Elvin Bishop had let backing singer Mickey Thomas take the lead on one song ("Fooled Around and Fell in Love") and now people knew what Mickey could do, so he took Balin's spot. And keyboard player David Freiberg (not usually a key songwriter) had a real good song in him, and guitarist Craig Chaquico came up with a really awesome solo, and a classic was born. Slick eventually comes back, Balin doesn't. The rest of this album kicks, too. David Freiberg got his start with a different SF band, Quicksilver Messenger Service. If you haven't heard QMS doing "What About Me?" from 1970, stop what you're doing and put it on NOW. I said *NOW!!!* You're welcome. (And thanks for the gold star. It's International Cat Day and I was looking to get my boy Ziggy a present.)
I was a sophomore in high school when this song came out. This was back in the day when magic came out of the radio. You guys seem to appreciate this song as much as we did back then.
In 1980 I was walking through Golden Gate Park with college friends. There was a stage just out in the grass and Starship was setting up. Maybe 100 people hanging around. Pop up concert. They did Jane. Amazing and unexpected experience.
About fifteen years ago, I was at Epcot with my then-girlfriend (now-wife) when "Starship featuring Mickey Thomas" was performing there. She was unfamiliar with the band, so I named several songs from Airplane/Starship. As we got closer to the concert area, we could hear this song playing, but we were too far away to make out lyrics, and although it sounded familiar, I just couldn't remember what it was called. The song ended before we arrived. Later, it was bugging me that I couldn't think of the name, so I looked up their hits, and was reminded of "Jane." I then felt pretty dumb telling my girlfriend, Jane, that I had been unable to identify this song.
Quality from top to bottom on this one; vocals, variety, arrangement, melody, musicianship, and of course...the cowbell! My favorite Starship song. Hey!! Lawnmowing is a fine activity for all ages. 🤣
This song is literally their best song. I always considered them kind of a joke but back in the day I would catch myself singing,"Jane Jane Jane"... While flipping burgers in a restaurant.
You should also check out a few JS hits when Marty Balin was the lead singer. "Miracles", "Count On Me" and "Runaway" were very deep ballads that were mind blowing. Terrific musicianship and lyrical composition during that time (70's). "Jane" is definitely the best banger from the 80's era of Jefferson Starship (IMO). Mickey Thomas reinvigorated the band when he joined JS. He also sang lead on Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and fell in Love". Great pipes! You can hear a better blend of Mickey and Grace Slick vocals on "Find your way back".
I was waiting for the "Holy sh*t" LOL, because those vocals and beyond are stellar. I think this came out right after Grace Slick left the band. The song gives you everything, I got goosebumps, so happy you enjoyed. The piano added the frosting on top, I always love the piano vibe.
So glad you guys are reaching back to the greatest time in musical history. The raw talent in this era is unbelievable. Todays music is not even close. This song is a classic.

Marty Balin on Miracles. Mickey Thomas on Jane. Thomas fame Elvin Bishop band his big hit lead singing Fooled around and fell in Love. but From Jefferson Airplane to Starship its a pretty strange change of personal and the name itself.
This song reminds me of the time I visited my friend, Mark, in Texas. He let me drive his Toyota MR2 Spyder convertible and we're driving down the road with the top down with "Jane" blaring from the radio. Great memory!!
Like a proud Papa, you guys absolutely nailed the commentary on this bad ass song. I've been hearing my whole life period I'm 56 years old .....and I still cut grass and jam with BEATS 💓 THX for offering us X hope ❤
Jefferson Airplane ended in 1972. The band reformed in 74 with a mix of former members and new. Due to legal reasons they had to change the name. In the 80s, the band was renamed Starship.
"Jane" came from their album Freedom At Point Zero but their next album, 1981's Modern Times is such a phenomenal hard rock album. It's s worth listening to first song through the last; not a bad song on the entire album.
That is so funny You mentioned it as a yardwork song. I vividly remember listening to this song while mulching my flowerbeds and it was glorious. Definitely a landscaping jam.
There is a great video on RUclips of Starship doing this song live on “Fridays” a tv show from 1979 or 1980. Some of the cast members join the band onstage near the end of the song
The whole "Freedom At Point Zero" album is fantastic. Jeffereson Starship re-invented themselves with this album as more of an arena rock act and it worked beautifully. Micky Thomas was (and still is) a fantastic vocalist. Today he leads the band Starship which evolved from Jefferson Starship and before that Jefferson Airplane.
Great song. They had many hits. You must check out “Winds Of Change”. Very powerful song. Craig Chaquico is a great guitarist with great vocals by Mickey and Grace on this song. I had to come back and add “No Way Out”. Another great song by them.
I've been waiting for you guys to hit this song for a couple years now. It's a true banger! S tier IMO. You have to check out "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" now.
Saw them live in 1982 at the OKC Zoo Amphitheater. Wormed my way to the very front, pulled out my camera and captured Grace Slick looking straight at me. Best pic I ever took at a concert. :) Good times. Then got back to the car and found a note on my windshield on where I could buy drugs. :O
Definitely "S" tier for me, since it's in my top 20 favorite songs of all time. I was 20 in 1979 when this came out, yes we partied hard to this one. Now, at the age of 64 I still rock out to this banger. The great Mickey Thomas on vocals.
I remember where I was when I first heard this song. Coming out of the YMCA in downtown Cincinnati, summer 1979, college junior, a friend said you have to hear this. A 12 pack later and some vitamin B we listened to it over and over and I was convinced I’d never get tired of hearing it.
You should check out "Stranger" from Jefferson Starship, its another "banger" from about the same time period, with Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick both on vocals. Great Drums, and whaling guitars! You'll love it!
Guys, we were kids in the 70's, early 80's, and we didn't know of this song, until we saw Red Hot American Summer only a few years ago. The movie is ridiculous, and funny, if you like that sort of thing, but the song was unbelievable! We thought it was written for the movie, and we were pleasantly surprised to find out it was Jefferson Starship. We're going to check out this band's catalog very soon.
I turned 17 the year this song came out and I was jamming to it then and I’m still jamming to it now. Still playing my music for the whole neighborhood too. 😂
This song just goes to show you how amazing this band was with their huge fan following even till this day. Their music is timeless and will never get old. All their music sounds good in any decade. And Grace Slick? Without a doubt, she is definitely one of ROCKS top female pioneers. Grace and the band are definitely one of my favorites that I grew up on and still listen to quite often. ❤ Edit: Mickey Thomas is the lead vocals on this particular song. Grace Slick is doing the backgrounds and harmonies. Mickey Thomas is one of the top rock vocalist in my honest opinion. Without a doubt, this song showcases his vocal abilities.
Never listened to this with headphones. The guitar in the right ear is amazing. At one point he did a little walk down that really hit. What a great tune
Don't really know how this song could be any better, the ultimate singer, guitar solo, keyboard riff,I thought one of you would have dropped an S-tier on this very underrated song
Some friends and I saw Starship at a “free concert” at the LA Sports Arena. Don’t get me wrong this and the rest of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship hits they played were great, no complaints. The problem was some studio needed crowd shots for a Rick Springfield video or tv special or some shit, so we were in the crowd shots and got to hear Jessie’s Girl about a thousand times before Starship came out. Nothing is free gentlemen. Nothing.
Mickey Thomas also sang lead on "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" with Elvin Bishop. That's worth a look, especially the Midnight Special version of it.
Bobbing heads, stank face, and spontaneous smiles; this is definitely a banger they are loving.
Been on them for years to play this one!

Grace Slick and Marty Balin both left the year before in 1978. ThT’s why Mickey Thomas was hired to replace them. Grace returned in 1981.
This song reminds me of the time I visited my friend, Mark, in Texas. He let me drive his Toyota MR2 Spyder convertible and we're driving down the road with the top down with "Jane" blaring from the radio. Great memory!!
I’ve been telling you guys to listen to this for years! Finally!
I’m glad you liked it- just really good, straight ahead rock n roll.
What year did they begin? 67? Love this band.
@@tracycampbell3060.. 1965
@@tracycampbell3060 Jefferson Airplane formed in 1967
Jefferson Airplane former members decided to put the band back together and that necessitated Starship removing the Jefferson part of their name.
@@roystoyscomics1361 to the regret of us all! that horrid we built this city.... such a awful song
"Miracles" (back from the Marty Balin days) is my favorite Jefferson Starship song.
YEEESSSSSSS!! Banger extraordinaire!! Love it!
Thanks, guys!
Happy day, all!

"Jane" came from their album Freedom At Point Zero but their next album, 1981's Modern Times is such a phenomenal hard rock album. It's s worth listening to first song through the last; not a bad song on the entire album.
I bought both LPs and nearly worn them out. ☮️
Save Your Love is a belter from that album!!!!!!!!!
That is so funny You mentioned it as a yardwork song. I vividly remember listening to this song while mulching my flowerbeds and it was glorious. Definitely a landscaping jam.
3:57 I love that break and the way the solo comes in. Favorite part of the song for me.
Wow, what a vocal
There is a great video on RUclips of Starship doing this song live on “Fridays” a tv show from 1979 or 1980. Some of the cast members join the band onstage near the end of the song
Omg you're finally doing Jane!
You know when they come in rockin the cowbell it's gonna be a banger!
Great song selection, great song, great evaluation. You guys rock. And I say that from the standpoint of being nearly seven decades old.
The album is sometimes referred to as Paul Kantner's metal side project.
Amazing, soaring vocals. Mickey Thomas is my favorite singer and it’s not even close.
Great song. They had many hits. You must check out “Winds Of Change”. Very powerful song. Craig Chaquico is a great guitarist with great vocals by Mickey and Grace on this song. I had to come back and add “No Way Out”. Another great song by them.
The Scorpions did Winds Of Change. Was it a cover?
@@leetroy3129 different song. Mickey and Grace duet
@@leetroy3129 No that is “Wind Of Change”. Completely different song but a good one none the less.
You guys had me LMAO! Love that song, my generation had the best rock to listen too. Keep up the great content.
Mickey Thomas is singing lead here on Jane, Grace Slick sings back up or along with him.
Grace Slick was not on this record.
My bad.
I turned 17 the year this song came out and I was jamming to it then and I’m still jamming to it now. Still playing my music for the whole neighborhood too. 😂
Knew you’d LOVE this and watching your chit-eating grins during the song PRICELESS!!!
Their album "Modern Times" is a must listen. Every song a banger......
You need to listen to Miracles. This was under Jefferson Airplane. It has a different lead singer - Marty Balin. Amazing voice, killer song!
Another song by the same vocalist is Fooled Around and Fell in Love (he sang for Elvin Bishop).
Never listened to this with headphones. The guitar in the right ear is amazing. At one point he did a little walk down that really hit. What a great tune
I played this on VINYL on analog radio! Their bass player was being messed around on and wrote it.
Don't really know how this song could be any better, the ultimate singer, guitar solo, keyboard riff,I thought one of you would have dropped an S-tier on this very underrated song
Their hit song 'Miracles', off the Red Octopus album, is classic too.
I feel the love! Micky can’t be beat!!! Huge hugs from Las Vegas nv !!!
Nothing.
I have NO idea why this song is not as revered as it should be. It’s sooooooooo great and i enjoyed watching your jaws drop!
Fantasy by Aldo Nova should be next since it's the identical chord progression as Jane.
Gotta also love Ansley Dunbar on the drums-A masterclass on percussion! ❤ 7:00
Mickey Thomas also sang lead on "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" with Elvin Bishop. That's worth a look, especially the Midnight Special version of it.
This song is a windows down stereo cranked to 11 cruzing around taking laps. I'm 58 and still do it. Love it loud!
