The 70s wouldn't have been the same without Jefferson Starship. A great song and great reaction. I miss rock music. What will it take to revive the talents of signing and musicians being able to actually play instruments. Sal, I'd love to hear your reaction to Jefferson Starship's "Count On Me." Mickey Thomas, the lead singer on this track, was also the voice on "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" by Elvin Bishop. I still have this release, "Earth," on 8-track that I bought new in 1978.
Loved your reaction. Since you really like Mickey's voice I highly suggest you check out his lead singing on Elvin Bishop's song "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" (the Midnight Special version of the song). Elvin is the guitar player and Micky is the lead singer in this song. I promise you will be amazed.
It's a masterpiece, they just put their whole soul into this song, first he sings: Jane, Jane, Jane, and then the guitar explodes and starts singing 5:31, 🎸🎸🎸 it was so beautiful. I also liked the drummer 🥁🥁🥁 in this song, everything was in time and perfect. Just a perfect song from Jefferson Starship.
Saw Starship open for Billy Squire then headliner Journey in the 80's at the fairgrounds in Ventura. Great memories with the exception of the heat and the huge crowd surging forward towards the front stage.. lol
Jane holds a special place in my heart. Me and two buddies had our first jam session playing it for hours on a snow day (1983?). Me on piano, Ed on bass and Brian on guitar.
yes! you hv bn robbed !,,I am 77 and have listened to them from the release of this song and it never gets old wth Mickys voice aand Craigs lead guitar riffs.
Jefferson Airplane was the original band...which morphed into Jefferson Starship...and later became just Starship. They went through several eras with different lead singers. Grace Slick was the lead singer through the early years, but later gave way to Marty Balin in the mid 70s and then Mickey Thomas came on in the late 70s and 80s. Grace remained with the band throughout the band's entire history.
Gotta do "Find Your Way Back" and "Stranger" from 1981's Modern Times. They aren't quite as hard as "Jane," but they're both EXCELLENT, mesmerizing rock tracks. It's only two years between 1979 and 1981, but the technological advance in sound production REALLY shows.
Here I agree with you SalvoG, I also don’t understand why so many good, cool songs on RUclips are so deprived of views? This is what I don’t understand about RUclips, how the algorithms work, it’s just unfair.
It's weird how anxious you get when you really like a song: moving the mouse around, rewinding two seconds, switching back to Wiki mid-song... You want to do anything but sit and listen to the song.
There are a lot of really good voices in rock music, but my favorites are Michey Thomas, Dennis DeYoung, Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury and Lou Gramm. There are many more but these guys have great control and near perfect pitch. I am always so surprised that Mickey never makes any lists for best male vocalist in rock and roll. Very under appreciated.
When this first came out, and you were driving in your car and it hit the speakers, you just could NOT sit still and you could NOT keep from singing it at full tilt, impossible. Such a massive song!
Yes my fave Jefferson Starship ... Mickey Thomas 🔥🔥 Craig Chaquico on lead guitar. Previous lead singers Grace Slick and Marty Ballin left prior to this album though both eventually returned.
One of the most cinematic moments I remember as a kid in the late 70's (I was around 13) sitting in the back seat of my older cousin's muscle car(I dont recall make or model) while he was driving with his friend in the front passenger seat. We were flying and I was just enjoying the experience of seeing what life and conversation would be like when I was old enough to drive with my friends. I was silent the entire time which was fine since my cousin and his friend were ignoring my presence anyway. Radio was cranked and "Jane" came on the radio. We hit a redlight right as the solo began. The friend in the passenger seat said(very loudly over the cranked radio) "That guy thinks he's a badass" in reference to Craig Chiquito and his guitar solo. Right as the light turned green my cousin replied in an even louder voice "Thats because he IS a badass" and then dropped the hammer as well as a good portion of the rubber from his rear tires onto the asphalt as we peeled out and away from the intersection. Tire smoke, engine roar, and Jane cranked all blended into an amazing moment in time that I have never forgotten.
Definitely my favorite song by the Jefferson Airplane/Starship group and one of the best Rock songs of all time! Mickey is an amazing vocalist and his lead vocals in the song “Fooled around and fell in love” by Elvin Bishop is on another level!! Must listen!!
The thing that always gets me is that ripping guitar solo ... ending on a climb up the scale, and as high as it gets, Mickey comes in a note higher than the guitar !!!
These guys are absolutely magnificent Salvo!! They play different styles of rock. Miracles is a great song from these geniuses! And MANY MORE. Rock on bro!!¡ Also they used to be called Jefferson Airplane, then changed it to Jefferson Starship.
I get chills when I hear this song. My mom always played our local classic rock station in the car when I was growing up, and this is one of the songs they played the most. Hearing it always takes me back to that time and place.
Count On Me is a really good Airplane song - great harmonies, gorgeous arrangement. It's lesser known, maybe, but it shows their versatility. And it is a truly beautiful song. Marty Balin sings lead and he's incredible.
Mickey Thomas is one of the greatest singers ever. He was lead on I Fooled Around with Elvin Bishop Band. Both songs are 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Hes mid 70s still performing and still sounds very good.
Golden Age of rockn roll. It will never be matched. The raw instruments and pitch perfect vocals are extraordinary. Bad ass song. Where are the guitars in todays modern music?
My favorite Jefferson of any era song. Followed by "Sara" from the album 'Knee Deep in the Hoopla' Just as good. TOTALLY different feel! It's flat out GORGEOUS.
What a track. Everything hits here. Lead vocal is top notch, one of the best lead vocals in rock history, background harmonies so nice, rhythm section tight, drum fills are killer, great lead guitar. You nailed it: exciting and full of sound.
White Rabbit was Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Starship was basically Paul Kantner, Grace Slick and (sometimes) Marty Balin, all from Jefferson Airplane, with other new members. At this point Marty had left the band and Grace left the band for rehab. Paul needed a new lead vocalist and hired in Micky to fill the spot. As Paul said at the time "What else am I going to do? Go sell cars?" The title Freedom at Point Zero reflects that attitude. This is the point when JS started its long decline to becoming the Micky Hit Song Band that led Paul to leave the band. He sued the band over the use of "Jefferson" as he was the only original member from the Airplane. He won and they evolved into Starship. This is actually a strong LP but this song kinda got played to death. The title song and Girl w/the Hungry Eyes are rockers as well. Caroline and Ride the Tiger are well worth a listen. That is Paul's son, Alex, on the cover of the LP.
@@deanadewall8400 I went to see them (several times) and when they started to play this song one year my friend and I decided to go get some beers 'cuz we hated it. We ended up not going when Pete Sears started his bass solo and he ended up with his bass on the floor and just pounding away on. Absolutely thunderous. I learned later it was the only time he did that.
Love your reactions Salvo. You are so positive and upbeat and I love how you love these classics from the 60’s, 70’s , and toward. Such great music from Starship ❤❤❤
Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and then Starship. Quite a mix on artists that over a couple decades gave us some great music. Jackie and I appreciate your interest in new music and we have more to come.
Great reaction to a GREAT song! Mickey Thomas’ voice is absolutely amazing. Don’t know if you’ve reacted yet, but if you want to keep with Jefferson Starship, give Miracles a try.
Begged Andy & Alex to react to it for a few years and they loved it, too! Such a great song Love Find Your Way Back, and earlier stuff like Miracles, With Your Love and more
…..if you liked that ! Jefferson Starship has another “Find Your Way Back” his voice is amazing ❤️ “Miracles” is my absolute favorite sung by Marty Balin off their (1975) album “Red Octopus” duet with Grace Slick ❤
I have always loved this song and would also put it in my top 20 of all time. Amazing. I echo someone else that suggested "Fooled around and fell in love"
Mickey Thomas doing what he does..... WAY underrated vocalist... Sang in Elvin Bishop's 'Fooled Around and Fell In Love"...and a couple more songs that escape my memory at the moment
During the lock down a group of musicians did an outstanding cover of this song. They did all their parts remotely. The musicians were - Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre , Winery Dogs) on drums , Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake , Trans Siberian Orchestra) on guitar , and a relatively unknown singer named Dino Jelusick on vocals , bass & keyboards. Dino is the best rock/hard rock singer i've heard in the last 15 yrs. Check out their version you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Mickey Thomas has one incredible voice!!! This song has always been a favorite of mine from the past! 'Jane' was released during the Disco era, so thats a possible reason why it didn't hit the top five.... imo And, you should also listen to his song, "I Fooled Around and Fell In Love"! It'd such a great song! 🎶
Starship…airplane…yes I realize I got the names mixed up lol. Didn’t catch it till I was done and doing more digging 😂

They eventually turned into 'Starship' and got soft. I prefer this.
@@jodij6280 I agree! Starship, like most other music in the 80s, was a burned out, pale reflection of what music was in the 70s.
@@BearClanMan1970 Early 80s still had "it" but it was going downhill.
Nothing buddy, there's just Jefferson "Airplane", so you're just confused, it happens.
"Find Your Way Back" is another banger. I love the three guitar harmonies.
Love Find Your Way Back -- great duet between Mickey and Grace Slick when she came back to the band.
Great request.
You beat me to it.
Loved your reaction. A lifetime favorite!
Oh wow, I never knew that!
I was gonna suggest the same thing....
I was looking for this suggestion and I hope it is taken.
Everyone always says that, but that song doesn't showcase Mickey Thomas vocals anywhere near like "Find Your Way" Back does.
Please check out Jefferson Starship, "Miracles"...
My personal favorite love song. ❤❤
"This voice" is Mickey Thomas. You may have heard him when he was with Elvin Bishop and sang lead on Fooled Around and Fell in Love.
Mickey Thomas...one of the most under respected and under appreciated voices of rock music.
Absolutely
The great Ansley Dunbar on drums just laying it down. 🎤drop
Criminally underrated for sure
It's a masterpiece, they just put their whole soul into this song, first he sings: Jane, Jane, Jane, and then the guitar explodes and starts singing 5:31, 🎸🎸🎸 it was so beautiful. I also liked the drummer 🥁🥁🥁 in this song, everything was in time and perfect. Just a perfect song from Jefferson Starship.
When Grace Slick came back to Jefferson Starship, she and Mickey Thomas teamed up for some really great vocal gymnastics...
"Stranger" was a good combination of their voices.
Stranger for sure.
No, it's not just the mood you're in, Salvo. This is just one terrific song, and for all the reasons you stated.
Try "Stranger", "Rock Music", "Layin' It on the Line" and "Find Your Way Back". All Sung by Mickey, and just fantastic.
I agree, this is top tier rock song. Criminally underrated.
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now ❤
Saw Starship open for Billy Squire then headliner Journey in the 80's at the fairgrounds in Ventura. Great memories with the exception of the heat and the huge crowd surging forward towards the front stage.. lol
This song is GREAT,,,,a REAL BANGER. 💥💥💥👍😎
Total banger
Jane holds a special place in my heart. Me and two buddies had our first jam session playing it for hours on a snow day (1983?). Me on piano, Ed on bass and Brian on guitar.
Even for those of us who couldn't really stand this group, THIS song was absolutely incredible, worthy of a thousand listens!
Just a perfect song, top notch vocals, top notch guitars, top notch drums, top notch keys, masterpiece! I'm adding it to my personal playlist.

This is such a rocking tune. It's the kind of song you blast in the car with the windows down and sing your heart out.
IMHO, this is their best song. I love to listen to this in my car jammin down the freeway!
To me I believe this to be a perfect song. Fire!!!!!!!
Mickey Thomas, another power vocalist from the 70s and 80s, right up there with Steve Perry, Brad Delp or Tony Lewis of the Outfield
