Mickey Thomas came to Starship after Marty Balin left. He is one of the greatest singers ever. Came from the Elvin Bishop Band did great on lead Fooled around and Fell in Love. This was out in 79. Grace Slick was original singer on Airplane, she was here. Sang along with Mickey on a few songs. Mickey Thomas is still performing, did a concert a few weeks ago in Wilkes Barre PA sounded great
That girl as you stated is Grace Slick…the most dynamic voice that rock has ever heard…..she headed the two most iconic bands in rock….first the Jefferson Airplane and of course the Starship……without her influence the female vocal surge in rock might have been limited….
That gal is Grace Slick, who was the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane on the early hits (White Rabbit, Somebody to love, etc.) . She became more of a back-up vocalist when Jefferson Starship emerged, first behind Marty Balin (Miracles, Count on Me, etc.), and then when they acquired Mickey Thomas, who is blasting on this song. Balin left the group, and Mickey Thomas became the lead man in Jefferson Starship, and later in the Starship rendition of the group.
I saw them on their first tour as Starship, after they changed from Airplane. Same band, but they wanted to move with the times. Heart opened on their first tour ever. I was in high school, 75 or 76, but remember the show like it was yesterday.
If someone were to ask me to provide an example of pure rock and roll, this is the track I’d point to. I absolutely love this jam and it’s soooooooo underrated!
This was one of the first songs I covered on my RUclips channel. I've always loved singing this song because not many people even attempt it. This has been one of my favorite songs from when I was a teenager, and the classic rock station would play it. Jefferson Starship was the 2nd incarnation of Jefferson Airplane. I believe this is early 80's when Grace Slick came back to the band. They were later forced to drop the Jefferson from their name due to a lawsuit from one of the founders of Jefferson Airplane. They were just called Starship after that. Mickey Thomas is one of my favorite singers of all time.
Growing up in the 70s and 80s was the best! Especially compared to today’s music. For every one “good” singer they have now, we had literally hundreds of great ones (at least) 🔥🔥🔥
Love this song! Mickey Thomas is a killer singer. The funny thing about this song is that when it came out and people heard it on the radio most thought that it was a new Toto single. This definitely has some "Hold The Line" influence, but definitely holds its own.
Guitarist Craig Chaquico wrote this song after being inspired by the banger from Toto- Hold the Line 🔥 lead singer is Mickey Thomas. You may have heard him before on the hit "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop.
No your not tripping Steven, The original band was Jefferson Airplane that morphed into Jefferson Starship. The woman you referred to was Grace Slick who was the lead singer of the original band with songs like White Rabbit, Need Somebody To Love etc. So here being able to see Grace backing Mickey is incredibly cool. "Fooled Around and Fell In Love will grab you to, it's Mickey Thomas with Elvin Bishop...a must do bro.
The singer is Mickie Thomas, a truly great vocalist. He's also the voice in Elvin Bishop's song "Fooled Around and Fell in Love", which I recommend you check out.
There were three versions of this iconic band. Jefferson Airplane in the 60’s, Jefferson Starship in the 70’s and Starship in the 80’s. This is probably one of my favorite songs by them.
When this was at the top of the charts, people in the music industry would call Steve Lukather of Toto to congratulate him on Toto's new hit song. True story. It wasn't Toto, but it sure sounded like it! Both singers got a good laugh out of it.
Yes, Steven, this is the same group with possibly some member changes. That is the one and only Grace Slick you see singing backup harmonies. They were Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and just plain ol' Starship. Idk which order the names were or the reasoning behind it. Possibly bc someone left and didn't want the band to continue with the name. Idk, but I loved this song when it came out. If you haven't heard, Somebody To Love, yet, it's def worth checking out. It's the old JA from the White Rabbit era.
Basically, Jefferson Airplane wound up morphing into Jefferson Starship when Jorma Kaukonen (Lead Guitar) & Jack Cassidy (Bass) left the Airplane & formed their own band "Hot Tuna" . The rest of the band carried on adding Craig Chaquico as lead guitar . When Marty Balin ( an Airplane original ) who shared lead vocals with Grace Slick in the band ( She is the female in the video ) left , Mickey Thomas came aboard as lead singer . You might be familiar with Mickey as he sings lead on the Elvin Bishop hit "Fooled Around & Fell in Love" . Paul Kanter , the bands Rythm guitarist is the long link that goes from the Airplane to the Starship . I believe when he finally left , the band continued on as "Starship" losing the Jefferson part of the band name .
Craig lìves across the valley from me here in Oregon. Great Society >Jefferson Airplane >Jefferson Starship >Starship. The quintessential SF hippie band.🎉❤🎉
Absolutely. The Jefferson Airplane evolved into the Jefferson Starship, which evolved into the group called the starship. There's other branches of these groups.Hot tuna is one. And a lot of solo work
I saw the title and rushed here. I recently said, if I could be gifted one voice it would be Paul Rogers'. I take that back because, if Mickey Thomas had come to my mind I would have said that. Call it a Mulligan.
Jefferson Airplane was formed in 1965, while Jefferson Starship was formed in 1974 by former members of Jefferson Airplane. New members were added while other members left and formed Hot Tuna!
Great video and great reaction! One band I have not seen a lot of reactions to is Shooting Star. A lost gem IMO. Last Chance is a complete rock opera in one song and I think everyone would enjoy it!
That George Thorogood live performance is pure jam session when Elvin comes out! ruclips.net/video/--AvCsh48bk/видео.html&pp=ygUWZ2VvcmdlIHRob3JvZ29vZCBlbHZpbg%3D%3D
Another Jefferson Starship vocalist to hear is Marty Balin. Need to listen to Miracles sung by him, which was the cause of thousands and thousands of babies being born back then! Yes, it's THAT sensual.... Here's the risqué version, along with many band pics. Of course Grace is singing backup and harmonies. ruclips.net/video/HBWBOGhFDnM/видео.html

Agreed. Mickey f'n slayed this.
His range is amazing.
Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship and then became just Starship over the course of time for one reason or another. Cheers! Great job!

Man , his vocals are spot on and the backing vocals are right there also and of course the band all sounded great in this performance 😊
No falsettos. No gimmicks. No auto-tune - Just pure F****** talent!
Not to mention, spot on harmonies!! Legendary!!!
Before you move on to “Starship”, check out ‘Find Your Way Back’ from this lineup. Another Certified Banger! 👍🏼💪🏼🎸🎹
I saw them on their first tour as Starship, after they changed from Airplane. Same band, but they wanted to move with the times. Heart opened on their first tour ever. I was in high school, 75 or 76, but remember the show like it was yesterday.
Mickey Thomas (the lead singer) was also in the Elvin Bishop band and was lead singer in the ageless hit single, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love".
If someone were to ask me to provide an example of pure rock and roll, this is the track I’d point to. I absolutely love this jam and it’s soooooooo underrated!
Awesome group !
Love this song. I finally got to see them in concert, in September 1985.
Great song

Summer 1979, Lincoln, NE. Mickey Thomas leading the way along with our beloved Grace Slick. Loved every note of the show.

You now must, must, must watch the legendary Elvin Bishop playing Fooled Around And Fell In Love with Mickey on vocals, LIVE! Just Do It!
I love this song! I’m 58. I remember this well!!!!!
Why does no one mention "Can't Find Love" by them...a banger for sure!!!
Now that's what you call a banger - Let's Roll. You're killing it. Thanks for all the hard work.
There were three versions of this iconic band. Jefferson Airplane in the 60’s, Jefferson Starship in the 70’s and Starship in the 80’s. This is probably one of my favorite songs by them.
Find Your Way Back another great song.
This is from 1979. This badn had 3 names depending on who was in it. First Jefferson Airplane then Jefferson Starship and finally Starship.
Check out Find Your Way Back, It’s Not Enough, and Don’t Lose Any Sleep by Starship. Especially Don’t Lose Any Sleep. They have so many good songs.
One of my favs
Jane, Jane, Ja--a-ane!
🔥🔥
Check out Mike Portnoy, Dino Jelusick and Hoekstra's version of Jane.da bomb!!!
Absolutely! It's mostly the same lineup as the all-star jam version of Stormbringer that he did!!!!!

They have a song called Ride the Tiger that is a hidden masterpiece.

The great Ansley Dunbar did the drums on this song after leaving Journey but was out of the band a few albums later.
More of their hits , "We built this city" and "Rock Music" Mickey Thomas is an amazing singer.
Trust instincts Brother...lol. That's Them!
RIDE THE TIGER 🐅 is a rockin tune by them. Also WIND OF CHANGE, they both sing, and yes it's the same band with maybe a new member, maybe.
Started as Jefferson airplane then became Jefferson Starship then just Starship.
Jefferson Airplane = white rabbit era
Jefferson Starship = Jane era
Starship = Nothing going to stop us era.
Stephen Yes the Band Was Originaly Jefferson Airplane the Name Evolved to Jefferson Starship & Later Evoled to Just Starship

Last Chance is an incredible tune.
They said that lead singer Mickey can sing higher than a guitar can even go?!?!
Same band. 🙂
They progressed with the times. Grace sang White Rabbit
Another Elvin Bishop performance worth watching is One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer with George Thorogood.

Craig Chaquico is a great guitarist. I don't think he got the recognition he deserved.
Sounds like “Fantasy “ by Aldo Nova a little
I’ve never heard that one! Appreciate it!
Yes they are the same...Jefferson airplane, Jefferson starship, starship...I might be missing some names. 😅😅😅😅
