    I am a 9-1-1 operator in Orlando, Florida. This song shines a small light on the darkness that is our career. It is a world of unknowns for many and the world of so very few that live in it every day. The job is stressful due to the calls, the requirements of the job and in many cases...a lack of people who can do the job. I recently took a call that made me step away from my console after a man took his life on Thanksgiving Day and I wrote the poem below to cure my mind of the hurt. To the government, we are secretaries and many agencies continue to fight to be viewed as 1st responders and get what we deserve.
    The public: you are just a secretary
    I am just a secretary: I listen to you as you tell me that your daughter is turning cold.
    I am just a secretary: I give you CPR instructions and do all I can to help you from where I am. You don’t know, but I am crying silently as you try to give chest compressions and try my best to tell you to not give up.
    I am just a secretary: I listen as you load the gun. I try my best to tell you to put it down.
    I am just a secretary: I hear a loud sound..the line goes dead and my units force entry to find you on the ground. I took a minute to myself. I am a human..know that I screamed to God on top of my lungs as I laid curled in a ball.
    I am just a secretary: you are trapped on the 20th floor of a building with no way out. I keep the line open as you give your last words to your family on a recorded line and give you the air until the line goes dead.
    I am just a secretary: I give my time with family on holidays and birthdays to ensure your family has the help you need.
    I am just a secretary: I sit in a dark room with no view of the clouds that pass by. I have only the visuals you describe as your world comes crashing down around you.
    I am just a secretary: I listen to you scream for help as your child is taken by a stranger and beg you for an address.
    You are just a secretary: ...I am just a secretary

      You're not a secretary! Without you first responders would have a hard time getting to where they need to be. I respect all dispatchers. Technically you are the first person they deal with when their world is turned upside down. No one calls 911 to chit chat. Yes dispatch can be a pain in the butt sometimes (all in joking) but you guys are a major member of the first responder family. God bless and I hope you have a quiet night or day.

      @@angelcake6849 I had a coworker get one one day about "needing to send someone to fix their phone"... A lot of times when we get something like that, we'll ask "this is 911, do you have an emergency?" your response to that tells us what's going on. From there we can ask yes or no questions...

    • @Corneredtiger94
      @Corneredtiger94 4 года назад +60

      @@cosmob7352 depends on each office's procuders really... And each dispatcher is different. We've all had different training and experiences so some may catch on to a problem before others do.. .
      You can try pressing numbers to answer yes/no questions.. Like "this is 911 is anyone on the line?" and you just press a number.. The beep can let us know that you're there. We can ask questions from there and try.. The problem is, enless you're calling from a land-line or find out some way to give us an address, it makes it nearly impossible to find you. It's not like the movies.. GPS can give us an area most of the time, but not an exact location...
      If we know you can't talk, I promise we're listening to every little thing going on in the background trying to figure out what's going on.
      I know our operating procedure is to call a phone number back if it looks like a pocket dial or a hang up... From there you can try to answer it and when we ask "this is so and so with 911, we received a call from this number, is everything alright?". You could always answer with something along the lines of "no, I dont want to take a survey" or anything off the wall like that.. It's a red flag and after that you can always act like you hung up the phone but leave the line open so we can try to figure out what's going on.
      We had one woman call before and never said anything, just called and hid the phone nearby and we could hear them arguing and after a while, she had said things that gave us a really good idea of where she was.. Working in landmarks into their argument and describing things outside.. I remember hearing the story of her telling her boyfriend to "just go get in that stupid red truck of yours and leave. Just don't hit the swingset on your way out".... At that point there were officers in the area and that was what let them know where exactly she was...

For so many people, it’s not “just a job”. It’s a calling. Fred Rogers, (Mr Rogers) would encourage children to look for the helpers. That’s very often people like yourself. You go into the most difficult situations to make a difference when it’s desperately needed.

      The thing about ordering a pizza to report abuse has actually been popular for awhile. I have heard that most 911 operators are actually trained at this point to check that they don't have a wrong number (not likely) and then know that it's a abuse situation. Although I didn't know if that's true or not. I'm glad its getting around and its able to get people out of bad situations.

    This song gives the dispatchers the respect and love they deserve.... Let us just pray that they understand they deserve all the credit in the world, for *THEY* are the original angels and hero’s. As this song says, not many angels wear there wings but these people have there own that shine brighter & brighter, whenever someone is saved, or whenever someone is close to living enough.
    Being a dispatcher must be such a stressful and hard job, as they have to hear what they are going to and it must put so much pressure onto them knowing someone’s life or safety is on the line.
    Let us all pray that they understand that they are some of the few types of angels and hero’s in this dark cruel world

    Having been on both sides of that radio...I will stay on the road side of it, catching those calls and not being able to physically help that person, but be the one person they count on to help them on possibly the worst day of their lives, TRULY takes an amazing person with a beautiful and strong spirit and heart. Police officers, paramedics and fire fighters are the ones the save our lives. But let us NEVER forget the ones you called to say you need help, the ones who passed on your SOS is to the right people. They made it possible for you to get the help you needed. They answer our calls for help and alert the right people. Sending love to all police, ambulance, fire staff and the dispatchers that make jt possible to get the help we need.

    • @beth1213
      @beth1213 3 года назад

      I disagree with the first thing you said. Yes police officers, paramedics and fire fighters save lives but call takers/dispatchers ALSO save lives. If we weren't at the other end of the phone the caller wouldn't get the help they need. Alot of people don't realise how important a call handlers job is. If we don't take the call seriously then someone will die. So I'd say call handlers are life savers just as much as a police officer, paramedic or a fire fighter, if not more important because they get the help in the first place

    I have always liked this song since I first found it about 4 years ago. Just a few months ago I got a job as a dispatcher. I have always been grateful and thankful for the 911 operators and thought that they deserve more credit than they get. And now that I have become one myself it has made me even more thankful for everyone that does this job. Not a lot of people realize that we are the lifeline from when someone calls for help to when help gets to them. I work in a small station and out area that I cover is not that big but I still have had my level of stressful calls and give a lot of credit to those dispatchers that have the hard calls on a daily basis and have had to listen to some horrible things than an everyday person can't even imagine. So thank you to all the dispatchers out there for everything that you do.

    As a retired volunteer firefighter, I gotta say a prayer for all first responders. I retired because my mental health just couldn't handle some of the stuff I saw out in the field.
    Today, I serve as a certified bartender. I watch over the people who could end up calling 9-1-1 and I do everything that I can to make sure they walk out of my bar in higher spirits. If someone calls me and I can listen? I'll listen. I may no longer be in the field, but I didn't stop having those instincts to help people. I support the true heroes of the world. And if I ever see them come in, I'm gonna give 'em the best damn service I can provide because they damn well deserve it.

    This is a beautiful song, i remember calling 911 once when i was fighting with my now ex, he pulled a gun in the hallway i had a 2 week old daughter that was asleep on the table in a car seat, an 18 month old son and a 7 year old son that were all in the house, i dialed 911 said that my boyfriend and i were fighting i was scared for him to see me on the phone so i threw it on the ground, he went outside i locked the door and had my 7 year old take his brother in his room and told him no matter what dont open the door. My ex kicked in the door continued to attack me. I screamed for him to get out of my house screamed the address and told him to get the gun out before he hurt the kids. I had no idea if the phone was even connected but thank god it was within minutes county and state police officers responded. He heard sirens and left none of the kids were hurt and i wasnt hurt badly without that call things could've been so much worse. So thank you to whoever was on the other end of the 911 call. They caught him a few hours later. I have no idea what would've happened if he hadnt heard the sirens and ran.
