There are three types of boxer, the fighter, the boxer and the showman, the Fighters were people like Mike Tyson and Razor Ruddock, they relied on power more than anything else The Boxers were people like Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, they were the finesse experts, they had the power but they wore their opponents down with perfect boxing first. The Showmen were Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali, they were so good they had the ability to psych out their opponent before they got in the ring.

I forgot what interview it was, might have been with Joe Rogan, where he said something like Cus taught him to go berserk mode. It was like a switch he would flip before a fight where his only concern was winning the fight. Like a violent trance. Tragically, he said the Cus died before he could teach him how to turn it off on his own. He said that might have contributed to him getting into so much trouble.
So true. My dad and grandpa were so into boxing that we got cable so we could see the under fights in 84. It wasn't much longer that Tyson was on ESPN seemingly twice a month. Every time we saw him he looked scarier but he would always show respect to the opponent and the ref.
Stronk Tomato I agree. However a shorter fighter is at an advantage and disadvantage when they close the distance. Even though they can fight on the inside the opponent can try and put their body weight on them. Take Tyson Fury for example. In his second fight with deontay wilder he took every chance he got to put his weight on him.
It's a yes and no answer. Think of reach as being an immediate advantage for beginners. When you only know the basics, that reach will keep most fighters back. Recently a lot of intermediate boxers have complained about how there is so much info for smaller guys to use to get inside. They also say the smaller guys are more compact. They claim that the reach advantage is a myth. The reason is because they're no longer fighting beginners, as they moved up to be intermediate boxers. The reach advantage is real, but it is not an overall advantage. Think of tall basketball players. They have less skill usually, as they can just spam their height. When they go against other D1 college players, they finally have to focus and learn more then they use to. In JH I was growing slow as hell, and was five feet exact. I realized multiple ways to get around their height advantage. One was a crazy fast three point hook shot. I mean at a running pace. Now that was not an immediate thing I could pull off. I had to visualize my placement in conjunction with the hoop. It took a while, but eventually I got it down. When I did, they had no answer to blocking it. It was just to fast. Funny thing was at that time I could only do it at a certain area along the three point line. If they were as skilled as me, or others, they might have realized that. Then maybe even shut it down a few times. They never did. Yet height reigns supreme in basketball. It is an immediate advantage, but that can make them rather complacent. Hence why the guys who grew slowly, and had to become more skilled, utilized their height much better. Stop thinking your advantage is always an advantage, or an overall advantage. If a fighter knows how to utilize his reach, that is why it has any bearing in a fight. That along with what I said about if the fighter knows how to get in the inside relatively easy. Using this video, Tyson rarely got hit when ducking, but here he took those smashes. It comes down to the styles of each fighter, and not these supposed advantages. Take for example that most of the time reach does matter, but one guy bets on the shorter reached fighter. One guy sees this, and laughs. He says "Don't you know his reach is two inches shorter"!? "No way he wins". "Just switch the bet before you lose your hard earned cash". The guy looks up at him, and says, "I appreciate the thought, but imma stick with it". The fight happens, and the guys fighter keeps landing two shots to the other guys one, and dodging most of his. The next day he goes to get his money. The other guy sees him, and immediately asks him how he knew. He responds with a tip of his hat and, "That sir is a trade secret". It almost seems unknown to people, but less distance to travel means a faster punch. Manny Pacqiuo fought that a-hole cheater, who had a significant reach advantage, and seven lbs on him. Manny hit him twice to every punch, and sometimes even three times. My point is that you need to look at the variables given, and how they intertwine. Basically most people are doing subtraction from the base variables, but those variables often are multiplying, not adding. They take these numbers and either just add them up, then subtract, or line them up across from each other, and then subtract. An example would be to take reach, speed, etc., and just add those numbers of each fighter. The one with the bigger number is supposed to win. Often enough they don't. Take Roy Jones jr for an example of speed, and compare him to Tyson. Tyson in his prime was faster, but he also was slower. Contradictory isn't it. Well might seem that way, but there is a difference between running five miles vs two. Tyson got to the end goal faster by positioning himself better, but would be slower if he ran the whole five miles. RJJ was fast as hell, but more distance makes you slower than less distance. Now I'm not saying RJJ should have adopted Tysons style, as your body type affects your style immensely. More or less, you gotta realize that to many people take boxing lightly, and see it as checkers. It is chess, as there are so many moves that could be done, especially to counter certain moves.
Mike gets a reputation for being a little fire ball of disrespect, attitude, and swagger... but people forget how much of that is an act or a psychological tool against his opponent, because you'll notice as soon as the fight was over Mike had nothing but positive things to say about the man he had just traded shots with for rounds and rounds of combat. "Punches like a fuckin' mule kick! Excuse my french, but oh my god" You know if Tyson is saying that, he means it.
I think he became more disrespectful in his later years. Look at how he talked about Buster Douglas shortly after their fight versus how he's talked about him more recently.
@@The_13th_Hussar I think that loss, along with other things changed the way Mike treated opponents and other people...before that loss he almost never threatened to eat someone's children.

Ruddock was suppose to show for wind sprints and other running. His manager and team talked to me for 20 minutes about boxing and my love for the sport. He told me to be there same time the next day to meet Ruddock because now they knew he was not coming. The next day I was there and Ruddock no shows again and I go to class but not before Ruddock's manager got my name before I left. 30 minutes later the Principal comes to my first period class and asks for me. He walks me to the football field where I met Mr. Ruddock and his team. They sent for me. Amazing day. For 30 minutes he talked to me about his game plan to fight Mike. He gave me a Leather Coat that had his image in colorful leather throwing the smash punch that said Team Ruddock across the rear shoulder area. therein lies the problem with boxing. only one person per weight division should have a title. world champion is singular, but boxing is a fragmented mess.
MrBadintentionss well there’s 4 titles once upon time there was 1 per weight. class. it’s good and it works because boxers need all belts to become one better than world champ n that is to become the unified and undisputed champion. Although I agree that these days there is wayyyy to much, like these diamond and silver belts. Plain and simple it should be WBC, WBO, WBA, and maybe IBF as that was the one that took it toooo far.
@@lendog9953 I hear what you're saying. but when someone becomes unified, it only lasts until they start defending, and then the belts get split again because the champ can only defend against one federation's mandatory at a time. one belt means the title is coveted, and it stops fighters who become bigger than the sport from writing their own agenda, because who cares about watered down belts when guys like Floyd have a lot of them, and can just fight for big money?

There are three types of boxer, the fighter, the boxer and the showman, the Fighters were people like Mike Tyson and Razor Ruddock, they relied on power more than anything else
The Boxers were people like Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, they were the finesse experts, they had the power but they wore their opponents down with perfect boxing first.
The Showmen were Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali, they were so good they had the ability to psych out their opponent before they got in the ring.

Contrary to the public perception, Tyson seemed to be a very considerate boxer who was respectful to the opponents. He was destroyed by some greedy corrupt promoters like Don King...Had he remained with Kevin Rooney as his coachhe would've remained invincible for 2 or 3 decades.....🙏🙏
If cus didn't die...man who knows what tyson could've been.
Tyson was always the most respectful to his opponents after the fight. Probably more than anyone else.
Don King and loss of Rooney was his downfall.
So true. My dad and grandpa were so into boxing that we got cable so we could see the under fights in 84. It wasn't much longer that Tyson was on ESPN seemingly twice a month. Every time we saw him he looked scarier but he would always show respect to the opponent and the ref.
Tyson was fighting guys taller than him with longer reach and knocking them out with *BODY SHOTS*
Legendary
@@akivaabraham7739 no actually.. Infighter have to get in while people with reach can keep you at a distance.. they needa close the gap
MikeEnIke007 Right. All of Mike Tysons opponents were taller and bigger than him and he still found a way to beat the majority of them.
Peekaboo
Had a broken jaw and still taking Tyson’s hit? Guys a tank. 😂

He then had me out to his sparring sessions to watch him train. This was a Large powerful man. Tyson was my size and Ruddock dwarfed me. I was lucky enough to have tickets to their rematch. I cannot imagine getting your jaw broken from a punch, and the pain that must entail, but the fact that he managed to keep fighting 9 ROUNDS, whilst continually being hit with a broken jaw is beyond me. He must've been in excruciating pain constantly. Tyson took some punches that would've critically wounded a normal person.
yeah, but Tyson trained by D'amato and Rooney wouldn't have gotten hit at all, and if he was still getting up to run at 5am "buster woulda been busted in 1 round. Alas, we can only imagine how brutally, and how long he would have ruled the heavyweights.
Staying conscious against Tyson is an achievement on its own.

Nothing will ever top boxing in the mid 80s to 90s
The Ali, Foreman, Frazier era in the 70s for the Heavyweights was by far the best time for them - and then Tyson came along in the mid 80s and brought it all to life again.
We can compare fighters from different periods in time as much as we like, but the reality is that they'll never fight each other and so we'll never know what might have happened.
That's what keeps it exciting though, anything is possible and the unexpected still keeps happening.

@@alfiemoon3908 but beat him
GUNFU but beat him? Who beat who ?
therein lies the problem with boxing. only one person per weight division should have a title. world champion is singular, but boxing is a fragmented mess.
