My grandfather taught me about knives. "Sharp knives are safe knives," he'd say all the time.. They take less effort, so you're less likely to get cut and when you do get cut it's a straighter cut that heals faster. He was an oral surgeon during WWII and had to sharpen his own scalpels. He taught all his kids and grand kids how to correctly sharpen knives.
That is so correct, coming from someone who grew up in the country and learnt to chop wood with an axe and a machete by the age of 10. Sharp tools make the work easier with less effort. I've never cut myself badly with a sharp kitchen knife. As for a machete/axe, correct posture and distance and technique is key.
Same here. I'm female but I was honored by my father when he gave me my first machete at the age of 12 1/2. It had a broken point, but he taught me how to sharpen it, and how to use it. Afterwards, I noticed that he never taught his sons until they were older. Later, he taught my younger son when he and I had to live with him. Again, I noticed he didn't teach my younger brother even though he was of an age with my son. To this day both my sons know the importance of sharp knives. Actually, we all 3 know the importance of good kitchen equipment. ❤️ Truly dislike useless kitchen gadgets.
I’ve never been successful with cakes or cookies, though I’m a pretty good cook otherwise. Your detailed explanations of why and how to do things has given me the confidence to give it a shot again. I’ve been working through your recipes and just wanted to say thank you! My husband would say thank you , but he’s having a nap after gorging himself on your lemon cookies. Love your work ❤
I love to bake but im sad coz i dont have a beautiful kitchen like yours. And i wish i could have all your kitchen tools and your baking needs like oven, mixers and everything. Sorry for me, im just a simple vendor who can't afford to buy all these things. Life is so difficult here in the Phillippines. I am 60 y/o and my dream is to become a pastry chef, but my family could not afford to sent me to a famous school. Oh well, thank you for your teaching method and techniques, your such a good teacher. GOD BLESS...
I've been slowly acquiring the right tools for awhile now. When you're broke, it takes a bit. I got a cake decorator set with a lot of helpful items as a gift (including bags n piping tips), a medium sized sifter for my dry ingredients, copper cake pan and some other things along the way. When I moved in with my girlfriend she had a few goodies hiding around: like an egg separator! These are actually extremely helpful if you have any kind of mobility issues with your hands, making separating eggs much more accessible. I don't really like uni-taskers either but with as much eggs as I use the tiny amount of space it takes in my drawer is well worth it.
I have to say I just love your videos! I am an avid cook/baker. Long before pandemic days I was the person who baked my own bread and cooked my food from scratch. My family always says how hard it must be, but I have a system and I can put a bread dough together in 10 minutes the rest is rise time. I have a well organized kitchen and I have a small apartment so it's not about big, but using space well. You have excellent advice and recipes that anyone can follow!!! Thanks for your always being a joy to watch
I absolutely LOVE how practical and no nonsense you are!!! Not everyone can understand the love of a good zester or whisk. And the straight edge pans!!!! By leaps and bounds, you are definately my favourite Baker.
I am very new for baking and it is a new whole cuisine for me (I am from Thailand). As living in the U.S. For a couple years, i am switching to American cuisine sometimes and i love all baked goods. I love your channel so much. It is so encouraging me to bake more and more and I am glad i found you. :)
I just discovered your channel and I AM HOOKED! Your cakes are beautiful absolutely gorgeous, obvi, but your vids are quick, easy to follow, informative and you’re just a joy to the watch !! 🙏🏻
You are the first teacher that made me know how to make cakes. And made me love making cakes It is beautiful that makes me want to have my own cake shop. I must thank the teacher You are the cutest person
I love having the proper tool for the job, thank you so much for the video. I am also a big fan of lean manufacturing which is basically doing things the easy way.
I’ve been binging your baking videos a lot today from in the hospital.. sucks when I can’t even eat anything atm.. but they all look so delicious, I can wait til I go home and the baking some of these
Thanks for the video. Loved it. Talking about burned cakes. I love yours. They are the way all cakes should be, flat and soft no more time wasted trimming!
Back in my cake decorating days, I used to like to tone my green icing with a bit of the pink/red/purple buttercream I was using for the roses. It always looked softer and more natural.
Thank you so much. Now my debate with myself about 8" vs 9" cake pans is finally solved and I'm going to buy the W-S gold 8" cake pans. All the best. Mark
Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge, tips, tricks and recipes! I live in the boonies and getting any treats for celebrations - or for whenever is a PAIN! Now, I feel confident making my own yummy cakes, cookies, etc., plus I get to control the quality of my ingredients! You are a wonderful teacher! THANK YOU!!!
OMG!! Preppy, you’re the best!! You explained everything so well!! As a matter of fact, all of your videos are awesome! The best teacher ever....thanks for sharing 👌
My momma has a rolling pin she's been using since before I was born in 19 hundred and 73. There's so many tools and so little time. Now I have an idea of why I haven't broadened my horizons in the baking department. I don't have any of the things I need to do it. Just so you know when Jeff comes home tonight and I ask for money to go gadget shopping with I'm telling him it's all your fault. This is gonna be great. Thanks preppy😀
I also like burnt cookies. My Mum used to burn a few shortbread ones just for me. I now do the same and my grandchildren love them, we call them "Well fired "
Thanks! I had a bad accident 4 years ago and I can't do much in the kitchen BUT I am still loving your videos. OH BTW, I used to own a catering business so my injury so saddens me. That's OK, I imagine I CAN do what you do!!!
Just found your channel looking for a pastry cream... and now I’m going to remodel the whole kitchen. With a baking station of course !!! Great job!!! Keep posting.
“In case the power goes out….” 😂 I imagined J.K. whipping egg whites, and when the power goes out, he briefly looks up, utteres a brief “Hmm,” and then just “wisk, wisk, wisk!” ❤
I absolutely love the way you answer to the slightly negative comments! 😂🤣. When I need a go-to recipe, I always turn to your recipes. I know that the cookie, cake, or pie will be yummy. I am still not there in macarons, but I remember what you said about your experience! Thank you for all your tips!
This is sooo useful and definitely informative. Your so right what you said about how frustrating when you don’t have the right tools, thankyou so much Preppy kitchen
Used your way of making my own cake strips and WOW what a positive difference!! I then ordered a couple sets of Wilton cake strips to from now on use on every cake I bake!! They help so much!!
I have an antique ice cream scoop or disher that I use for cake batter and now thanks to you I know get the frosting on a sheet cake really even with the small scoop. I need a bench blade scraper thing. Good day
John you are One of My Favour Baking Guys I love to Watch... Ur Explanations are so Easy to understand n U have Ignited More of A Passion to do with Baking I’m gonna go into Business one day & U Will have had an Imput into a person U have inspired because of Ur own passion Baking Thank U So Much 😊
Wow, buddy boy! I've recently started baking, in large part due to the Coronavirus. My first profession as a very man was as a cook and then sous chef. I quickly found out I possessed a bit of natural talent with regards to ratios and aesthetics in cooking. Fast forward nearly forty years, and I find myself, for the most part, stuck at home and a lot of free time on my hands. Preppy Kitchen has been an invaluable resource! Your approach to imparting information and your overall demeanor is yes, both entertaining and enriching. I really enjoy how you crack yourself when you start getting silly. It's not hard to tell that you have experience as an educator. Obviously, I am subscribed and you are the only food or cooking channel I have the notifications turned on. I understand you have two little ones, and I can tell you that when they get older there is precious little that is more rewarding than teaching one's children to cook! I have three kids and it's a blast! I can't thank you enough. Peace
You have inspired me to make time to do what I love doing and that's baking. I love your demeanor; calm, relaxing, exciting and interesting. Thank you for sharing your talent and skillset with us.
I look forward to watching John expand his brand. I won't be surprised if he collabs with Wilton and/or OXO or another brand for some baking/kitchen tools and accessories. I could also see him having a bunch of housewares and home decor items.
I love my cake strips! I think I've had mine for 15 years. I'm the only person I've ever seen use them, glad to know I'm not alone. Great list! I added a few things to my Christmas list. Your favorite rolling pin is on clearance at Williams Sonoma right now!
What a great video! Thank you so much for all of the tips. I had actually already purchased some of the things in this video based on your previous comments about them. They truly make a difference for a home baker like me. You’re awesome!
Thank you for sharing this. I know what you mean by the nightmare of trimming cakes and getting crumbs on the cream. I suffered through all that when baking my son's 18th birthday multi-tiered cake. I am certainly going to get the cake strips. And the correct cake tins.
I tried your carrot cake and chocolate cake recipes and they're all amazing and yummy! Adding the sour cream into your batter is the best ingredient to have a moist cake. Awesome!
Bought a pastry mat on your advice and it's brilliant..I made your cheese and chive biscuits and the dough turned out very sticky without the mat I would have had to add tons of extra flour great tip
Ha! Did you say "stuttering" to describe the crummy plastic cake stand flop? HILARIOUS! I feel the same. Stuttering. Yes. So proud I have everything you have here but the cupcake hole punch. Who HAS that???
I first saw your cakes on instagram and am so glad to have found your youtube channel. Your cake strips video is a huge revelation. Cake trimming makes no sense! Absolutely love your channel. Please keep them coming.
You truly help me. I've always baked and enjoyed it. But I'm just now trying it more. You are such a huge help to me. Thanks so much!! 💕💕💕 Preppy Kitchen is amazing!!
I never knew that a copper whisk would make beating egg whites a little easier. I wanted to make homemade meringue frosting but I gave up because it I had to it manually. I'm a girl who would prefer power gadgets for some things. Thanks for the insight. 😊
My Mom had a flat whisk that looked like it had chicken wire covering the whole thing, and she used that to whisk up her meringue and even 7 minute icing, I don’t remember when she finally got the tool that had two smallish whisks and it had a little wheel with a knob on it that had to be turned constantly until whatever she was baking that day was mixed well, I know she was so so happy when she finally got a stand mixer, I think she wore out two of them, as did my cousin, and even though I’ve baked a lot through the years, I’ve never had a stand mixer.
You are have a wonderful channel and a great personality. Enjoy you active cooking and baking. Your husband must have a gym membership to work off all the meals and deserts. You are the BEST!!!
The spatula is my all time favorite tool I can be a real nerd about it. I hate wasting food or even seeing people not use a spatula to get out the last of the bowl.
Every other 'Kitchen Gadgets' vid I've seen has made me, frankly, angry! They always go for those single-purpose gimmicky things that are pointless. Every single thing you presented in this vid was wonderful!

I love the way you explain everything, and the way you laugh. Smile you give is contagious ❤️

Because of you and your videos, I have gained weight, spent money on cake supplies, and had a lot of fun!!! Thanks.
Back in my cake decorating days, I used to like to tone my green icing with a bit of the pink/red/purple buttercream I was using for the roses. It always looked softer and more natural.
I'm a baking strip convert! I just bought another after trying one out, but I tried the homemade foil one and that worked perfectly too 😊
Thanks. I agree, being prepared and having the "right stuff" helps immensely.
You are so genuine! 💕 I love your spirit and how you talk with a smile. ❤️ ❤️

Totally agree with you, John, about the blasted low cake turntables. Waste of time and very ineffective.
I tried your carrot cake and chocolate cake recipes and they're all amazing and yummy! Adding the sour cream into your batter is the best ingredient to have a moist cake. Awesome!
Gracias John, muy útil sus comentarios sobre los utensilios necesario para el bakery.
Wow!!!! So helpful...so heartily explained...copper copes up so crazily..

Yes.. The cake strips really help... 😄😄😄 thank you
6-8” sounds about right... 😎

I love watching your videos and the way you talk, you always make me laugh! :)
About the microplane, don't know if anyone already said this, but if you go "back and forth" with whatever you're grating, the teeth get pushed down over time. If you just go in one direction, it stays sharper for much longer.
I loved learning about all the cool things you use to make your beautiful desserts!!
Thanks I love your videos it’s like a baking lesson every day
What a great video John! Very informative!
1. He slowly crimps-up dough mat and then puts it aside.
2. My OCD self cringes inside.
3. Short minute after, a clip of the mat being folded is shown.
4. I feel relieved.
Not a negative comment, just my OCD reaction that was later relieved 🤣
I’ve really enjoyed your videos...I hope I get to make one of your recipes soon!
Thanks so much. I totally agree being prepared is the key. Love ❤️ your channel
I am so jealous of your kitchen. I love it. And I love all the videos john
