You have to keep in mind that Seattle had one timeout, with under 30 seconds left in the game. Belichick set it up by not calling a time out as the clock ran down, a bit of genius that left Carroll with not enough time for three running plays. With the option of running Lynch three times for that one yard taken away, he had to call at least one pass play. NE had eight men on the line, vs. Seattle's six blockers, so this was the obvious time to call it. A catch would win the game, and an incomplete would stop the clock, leaving Lynch with two chances at that last yard. And surely there was no chance of an interception on a one-yard pick play. (Well, _almost_ no chance.) Butler's amazing move blew up the plan, and Lynch never got the two shots that Carroll wanted him to run.
