Land Rover Discovery 3 rear door repair /tailgate won't open

  • The reason the tailgate won't open is usually the rear door switch is faulty or the actuator in the lower tailgate is faulty. If you press the rear door switch and you don't hear the actuator, it's probably the rear door switch that's faulty. If you press and hold for 15 seconds the lock & unlock buttons on the dash and it opens the door it's just the switch. The switch can be prised out , there will be two wires at the back of it and the Freelander rear door switch will fit as a replacement. Just cut the two wires and join these to the two wires on the Freelander switch.
If you press the rear door switch and you hear the actuator and nothing happens, the actuator is faulty. It's a real nuisance because you have to prise off the carpet trim , push back the cover off the actuator and grab and pull the wire that releases the door lock. Small hands would be helpful hear but I found the hardest job was removing the carpet trim. Best of luck if this is your problem and I hope this video helps. Sorry for the quality but it was a last minute decision to record this on my phone just in case it helps someone else.

This problem happened with my wife's 2006 LR3. Let me tell you this: it was a massive pain in the ass to fix. It took me about 4 hours to get access to that snapped cable end, but I was going to fix it or I'd blow the goddamn Rover up. I wasn't going to pay the a LR specialist $500 to fix a busted cable.

If the tailgate not opening of the handle leaver button thing press the lock and unlock button on your dash together hold for about 3 seconds and you will hear it click and open no need to dismantle car

Hey how did you move the carpet to get a better look??

So long ago I can’t remember. I think around 2 :30 I have the carpet held open with a block of wood and that allowed me to get to the cable and pull it which then opened the rear door. When the door is open it’s easy to drop the bottom door and then unclip the carpet .

Thank you so much! Was a bit easier for me, the cable hadn’t gone but the actuator itself wasn’t working so just pulled the cable with a screwdriver

Suffering from no access to boot issue too.
Last weekend I managed to get everything open, managed to unscrew the 2 bolts that fix the actuator to the lower tailgate, but didn't disconnect electrics.
I closed up as I didn't have all the parts to do the fix broken wire issue then.
Today I went back to crack on and I’ve managed to get the top tail gate open again but lower is stuck. I don't hear an acuator when I press the square button.
No matter how hard I pull on cable behind the black plastic nothing happens.
Any ideas? Any help much appreciated. Need to get this sorted first then replace the top tailgate handle/switch too. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Thanks for trying to help but it is the switch on the upper hatch that is broken. The part number you gave is for the actuator, not the switch. So far, any site that sells the switch wants as much for shipping as for the part itself, plus they only sell the entire switch with harness. Is the switch available on its own?

Sorry for replying so late. My switch went on the upper hatch as well and I bought the Freelander 2 switch, which is the same switch only far cheaper. You just have to cut and join the wires for the freelander switch to the wires going to the old switch. From memory I think I soldered the wires.

Is there no manual way to open the rear door though? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Unfortunately not, you have to pull the wire to open the door

Now that we know how to replace the switch, where can we buy one? Please advise and thanks.

You can't go wrong with the guys at Atlantic British aka roverparts com. The OEM part number is LR017470G which is an upgraded version of the original that holds the cable captive better than the original (or so they say). Good luck!

I can't manage to pop off the cover after I've gotten the hatch down, I've successfully taken both stay wires off, but I can't pop off the cover entirely to work on the actuator, because it gets caught onto the the hinges the stay wires latch too, what do I do desperate for some help. Thanks for the video, it's brilliant.

Good video I managed to pry the back carpet from the rear Gate using a flat crowbar and screwdriver that works very well because the crowbar was 2 inches wide and very thin which allowed me to slide out under the plastic rim and then put the screwdriver in start from the lowest Side first

Also try to use a B&Q work gloves and cut the fingers off up to the 1st finger joints this why you won't cut the back of your hand as I did in the beginning

Hope it all worked out well. Good tip about the gloves. Thanks for the comment.
