How To Make A Track: Phase Fatale

- How To Make a Track is a series that offers an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how the world’s best producers make their music. In this episode, we visit the Berlin studio of Hayden Payne aka Phase Fatale, a Berghain resident with a love of ’80s post-punk, industrial and EBM.
On his new album Scanning Backwards, released earlier this year on Ostgut Ton, Payne explores how sound has been used to try to influence human behaviour throughout history, from the soundsystems that power nightclubs to the mind-control experiments conducted by the CIA as part of the top secret MK-Ultra program in the 1950s and ’60s.
Payne shows us how his fascination with the effects of different sonic frequencies informs his music, whether he’s scanning wavetables on his Waldorf Microwave XT synth or using guitar feedback to create background ambience.
Scanning Backwards is available now on Ostgut Ton.

Great stuff. Learnt more in this vid than any of the others. He gave so much away about his signature sound. Very humble guy
Same. Learnt loads and got inspired to make an industrial ripper.
the cat is the mastering engineer
ghostwriter
I Like your picture
Clearly has the best ears in the room. 😏
There is nothing left for mastering lol
Bob Katz 🤣
Rarely see someone break down a track so succinctly, normally they look bored as hell doing it..great stuff :)
when this came in my recommended i went OH SHIT out loud
He actually gets it. This is how we did EBM in the 90s without DAWs. Also, finally Skinny Puppy gets some recognition. Modern TBM.
Such dark grooves love it! When 'ambience' was added with noise from the MS-20 and it sounded like a thousand tortured souls 😍
'it is really important not to mix with your eyes at all'
Dude's freakin cool, showing pretty much exactly everything he does on his own tracks.
80's EBM-Industrial-New Beat-Dark Wave all in one! This kid was born in the wrong decade! Great stuff
Minus the distorted vocals, hope he keeps it that way
Born in the right decade to bring it back
@@notsure1135 Thats what im saying. Electro music is on the rise again, lots of people saying house music summer for 2022 and germany ramping up the raves, the goth clubs in Tennessee are also ramping up and booking Dj's from Chicago, LA and bands such as Pixel Grip, Patriarchy, MVTANT etc. Right Decade!!
Greatly inspired from early Skinny Puppy and Frontline Assembly albums. Good to see.
Although too much low end filtered out but I'm sure he has a lot better knowledge of how his DJ setup sounds.
This is gold! he breaks so many rules and automation by hand makes you feel very involved with making the track.
"How To Make A Track": (he immediately goes into MKULTRA conspiracy mode) nice :)
good buddy is it a conspiracy theory if it’s true and documented?
@@intheblink I guess it's just a conspiracy and no longer a theory.
@@intheblink It is all very well documented. Nothing theoretical nor conspiratorial about it.
@@aabe4327 it's still a conspiracy even if it's documented
-OY3AH! " Fact We love these "
Love the connection and underlying story, it adds that extra impact and depth to your sound, thanks for sharing.

This was an excellent breakdown of his working practises.
Loved the way he goes about explaining all the stuff he does. Loved the cat as well. Oh, and yeah, the track is killing it.
Super cool! I love it when artists really think deep about music in an original way.

Hayden is an absolute genius in electronic sound. A young producer with an incredible future. Puts a lot of us older electronic musicians to shame ! Keep up the amazing work Master Hayden !
More of these sessions with different artists please
Phase Fatale is GOAT. Do more of this series please!
Finally, someone with a great Story to tell, regarding the music he creates. Really great documentary. Sounds tremendous btw.
Who would dislike this gem? Thanks Fact Magazine for featuring the darker under belly of electronic music

I just always come back to this video!
Oh my god I immediately started to think about late 90's Arena FPS's, especially Quake 3. This was a very great watch!
he's really interesting and talented, love his music
I’m not even into this style of music (eventhough I do like it) but his process is super interesting and he comes up with real quality stuff! 👏🏽👏🏽

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, we need the a machine drum mk3!
Or at least a RYTM with those MachineDrum machines...
Machinedrum Mk3 amen
Call it the Machinedrum mk-Ultra
Reminds me to 1980s Electronic Body Music. Like your track a lot.

Brilliant piece, took so many tips from that.
The guitar-ambience sounds soo good!
Gotta use the metal zone pedal. It’s guitar feedback ketchup
Love this guy! So Impressiv talented
Jeeeez, mad! Love this guy! I'd love to see how to make a track like Kahn & Neek one day!
Kudos on the pre made joint on the side buddy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this.
And a black ebm kitty:) its nice to see new generation of DJ's loving sound and aesthetics of EBM and adding to it.
I've been a fan of this dude for a while now, always wondering how his workflow was. Boy am I in luck!
Machinedrum is so easy to work with once you get it's work flow and build muscle memory. It's fairly rigid, quantization wise, but that's what makes it so great for electronic music. That filter bank dirties up that kick nice!
Really insightful video. His album is very good.
First time hearing phase. This dudes super passionate love it!
Good vid. Admiring the studio tan!
You have a teaching skill.
Amazing. Love it. Huuuuuuuge EM lover. Greetings from Belgium. Dirk.

So I cane back to this, this morning.
Savant comes to mind
This was actually super slick
now THIS is a video worth watching.
Still is a video i watch again and again ❤
That was great!
Very insightful. Thanks.
I remember when this kid was making synth-pop and post-punk... Love to see how he's evolved.
Do you remember what they were called?
@@kingcaligula625 Dream Affair, and I think he played in a band called Frank(Just Frank) but discogs disputes this.
14:00 hmmm why don't i try that on my tube amp *smashes all 8 tubes* sounds cool man
This was brilliant! Thanks FACT + Phase Fatale, really interesting was totally absorbed by this
Incredible artist
Excellent video!
this was so useful...thanks!
14:11 ohh woah, fantastic DIY Soundeffectmachine😎 really koolstuff 😂😂😂
