How To Make A Mella Dee Track

- Ryan Aitchison, aka Doncaster-born Mella Dee, has constantly evolved as a producer since starting out as one half of Mista Men in 2010. Over the decade he’s moved from UK garage to hardcore and techno, using his encyclopedic knowledge of club music to develop a uniquely hard-hitting style.
On this episode of How To Make A Track, he invites us into his synth-stuffed studio to take us through his production process, knocking out an infectious Jeff Mills-inspired earworm featuring a Raekwon sample from 1994 and synths pre-owned by The Black Dog and Paul Woolford, no less.
Mella Dee will headline the Saturday after-party at this year’s edition of Field Day, which takes place on June 7 - 8 at the new London venue The Drumsheds. Tickets are available now.

Quality! Real and to the point. More of this please
Instead of copying the steps 15 times like 3:33 you can go to BAR mode, hold COPY button then press pattern 16, it will automatically copy the first pattern over all the other 15 patterns.
And that's why you don't get invited to party's.

Dope workflow. Cirklon strikes again
That tune wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Sweet Exorcist LP. He's continuing the tradition of great electronic music originating in South Yorkshire.
I love his music!
like the no nonsense approach refreshing
Epic work flow thanks for sharing. I can relate to why you work in this way! Love it :D
That Cirklon looks dope, I was hoping to hear some of that Waldorf and see how deep the sequencing goes on the Cirklon, though. This was insightful.
Love it!
Love the workflow!
@Factmagazine : next time : setaoc mass or Randomer please !
Yea would love to see a Randomer one too.
The chav techno pioneer.

I can relate to that workflow, big up Mella Dee
Dang ....Mella Dee Coming In With Knowledge Bombs ..FOR FREE..some thing that masterclass would charge you for.

The circlon is becoming an essential piece of kit for house music
this was so sick
Wicked setup big ups
22:53 the moment he realize what he has done.. beautiful.. :D it's a tune!🙌😎
Would love to see a Lone 'Against the clock' challenge.
fucking agreed mate
"They're to the point. It's designed to be a groove in a club and be used." ❤

big up donny lad .
Dope!
Mella Dee top producer 🎹🎛🎚
We need a Leigh D Oliver 🔊⚠️
fucking love this minimalist setup/workflow
So sick man, one of the best producers about atm, none of this generic shit that most people produce these days
Is there a final track?
Dope
What is the track playing in the beginning??
keep it clear and simple, love it!
watches video... throws computer out the window and gives up.
Can anybody tell me what he is doing on the Ensoniq eps16+ at the start of the video? when he says he goes down to 11.2 and opens up a filter to get that low bitrate distorted sample. Thanks!
*solved* For anyone interested he is lowering the sample rate right down to 11.2, alot of old hip-hop tracks had this feel to them due to the old samplers. Albeton live 10 has an audio effect called "Redux" and one of the templates is called "old school sampler" and it lowers the bitrate to give you a similar result!
nice gear ;)
All that and yet all Mella Dee's songs are literally one or two bar sample loops throughout.
nonsense - he regularly switches between 4/4, 2/8, or 1/16 to keep things fwesh!
His music is straight forward, granted, but it sounds amazing in a club setting.
@@tellthemagain bang bang bang bang bang goes the drum

So? He says in the video that it's designed to be a groove for a club setting, aka repetitive.
That studio is goals.

I respect him fully for his style and what he’s done for this music, but seems like a long way round because of all the analogue equipment, I get some people prefer it but oh my, still an insane set up, producer and DJ and all respect goes to him
would you prefer he did it your way?

Anyone got link to the wu tang clan interview he sampled
He’s some fucking boy 💜💜

" Over the decade he’s moved from UK garage to hardcore "
What Hardcore tracks has he done?
lynn mcgonigle I think they mean that slow jungle style, kind of has similarities to BBHC maybe?
HOW COME WE CAN'T COMMENT ON ATC EPISODES ANYMORE ??
Most of the artists are you get are good🔥 And for the ones who people don't care for, let us say so💩
I imagine it’s because the comments were a shitshow of people saying “I can do better than that”, especially when the artist was a woman.
Oh well... this is America and we should be allowed freedom of speech...good or bad comments.
Nick PA nah, dickheads don’t have the right to be dickheads wherever they like. If it was a theatre and someone stood up for the entire performance shouting about how they could do better, wouldn’t you want them thrown out? Or do they have a right to uninterrupted free speech as well?
This isn't a movie theater or play...it's RUclips. That's what half of you tube is, Opinions. Just cuz you can't handle the truth or what others have to say doesn't give you the right to stop them from saying it 🗣🔥🗣💩
Nick PA but you agree that the right to free speech isn’t absolute, right? There are certain situations where it’s perfectly reasonable to not allow people to express their right, such as the aforementioned theatre. If we can agree on that then we only disagree on specifics. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for a channel to choose not to allow comments when those comments are overwhelmingly useless and often derogatory. You may not think it’s reasonable, that’s fine - it’s your opinion.
memes inbound
Wait there are comments again? Some of these dudes were too embarrassing and they disabled comments for a while lmao
That was just on Against The Clock nah?
breakline only on ATC
It was probably the other way round.
its like fl ...... in real life
10:02 I need friends who send me free synths
Why does he need synths?
yeah so ya kno i got dat, money, i mean synths ya kno, alrite, just so i just turn that knob lil bit, alrite, mess around, yea, so its just that simple ya kno, i mean, money and all, synths yea, i mean just put dat kick drum and there ya go
shhhft that’s pretty much what I got outta this 😂
How snobbish. Are u making music? Share please?
Have to unsub because this channel keeps disabling comments on their videos. Not cool. We all need criticism, both good and bad, to evolve as artists.
welcome to 2019's snowflake culture
Intelligent critique is considerably different from the nonsensical criticism of the internet. There's critique and then there's trolly randos with tons of garbage opinions. RUclips is where you will find the worst of the latter.
@@djshiva true, but if you silence critique and discourse about your art, it pretty much takes one layer out of the whole thing.
absolute potty.
boggles the mind that this much expensive gear is being used to create stuff you could make with ableton default instruments in 10 minutes...
But not nearly enough fun.
boggles your mind because you don't get/like this kind of music... I know this discussion has been going on since there were videos like this, but please try do diffirentiate people. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's easy. For me as a person who prefers minimal electronic music over basically anything else (except for certain ambient stuff), this is like I was telling a professional piano player who is playing on a fancy piano that I could do the same with Ableton default piano plug in and my midi keyboard in 10mins.
Lol ok mate.
if you're a professional musician it's not that much money compared to how much it's bringing in, really.
@@dandykaufman2 definitely, the flip side of my original comment was the fact that so many people are doing amazing things with a fraction of the gear he has and not getting anywhere near the recognition to be able to afford this stuff. just seems like a waste really!
*High pass!!!
Congratulations on knowing that, and thanks for pointing it out. We don't deserve you.
