The guys a fucking animal. No wonder he has so many releases when his work flow is so fast. No time messing about thinking just bouncing ideas fast with great results! :)
Honestly, for the first 16 minutes I was listening to this thinking it was pretty horrible, then suddenly he put it through the tape machine and it magically came together for me. I even jumped between the times on the video to check what I was hearing. What a transformation that brings - very cool!
Yes because first 16 minutes you were listening what its comming from his speakers thru mic because they were recording him speak. After you jear audio directly from ableton thats why such difference
yes totes agree...not so much the sound being messy, but the actual music/ tune/ groove was really messy! i guess you need the mess in the process to make it interesting and not generic, and lo and behold, sounds great by the end! 👍👍
Disagree totally as well. Kind of a bullshit comment as well "oh it's the analogue tape thingy that made it awesome!" No. From the start you could tell that there was some Legowelt magic dust going on, just unpolished. By the time the track was ready for tape it was already gold. It's not the tape that makes a Legowelt track. Legowelt makes a Legowelt track. Pure magic!
great vid, but there were loads of fx added to the track before he dumped it to tape - delay to the 303, eq/compression on the drums, sidechaining. the way the vid plays makes it seem like dropping it to tape suddenly made it sound like gold. if only it were that easy haha :P either way, really cool peek into his flow.
Jack Siegrist very nerdy, ironically making music for chavvy clubbers on pills, oh the irony. Oh the irony, oh the revenge of the nerds that was 90s instrumental techno (none of them were good looking singers or front men)
it's been a very long time since neurophysicians found out that all beat based music inhibits left lobe activity, where analytical activity happens. electro is made to pump up right one, resposible for non verbal stuff. no surprise that after a few years of inhibiting your left lobe you're hooked to this kind of machine noise crap forever...
i like his idea of music, his music and composition conception, when he speak about music is very interesting to hear it because music for me is a practice and a philosophy. I have been practicing a lot of (i studied licenciature in music) every day, making scales, recording and listening my own things but some day i thought that music is more than music, think that music is a ritual practice of humans vey like a door, maybe portal where the person who is making this noise is experimenting opening planes and suffering transformations, expansión of his being, that is to say in his senses where we can ask ourselves about aesthetic practices, ask us from education, political, philosophy, music and arts.
I love when he puts the 3.5 mm jack into the side of the laptop to record RUclips 14:08. I always think "Damn i'm such an amateur" when I do that, seems like other people do too though haha.
@@sambritt2672 if the laptop has audio in, otherwise it could be that he plugged 3,5 out(line out) from laptop to the interface which than routed the youtube sound thru interface(via usb) back to a ableton recorder.. just speaking my mind I do it differently, i route a youtube output to a interface mixer channel and route it again to Fl studio or Audacity lets say and record it that way All it needs is a playfull mind and it will figure out by itself, just watch for those loopbacks and your ears
One Area of consideration is the use of the tape machine. If you havent got one of these a VHS video recorder can be just as good if not better. The VHS tapes have more time to record and in LP 8hrs worth and the bandwidth of VHS tape is phenomenal. You can use aux in on the player or scart input via phone and get that "Warmth" from your recordings . I use it a lot. Hope this helps.
5:48 I just went to his website, he has a bunch of free sample packs of synthesizers. Actually spent a couple hours combing through them, there's some good stuff.
Was it realy the tape recoding effect? It sounded awesome at the end. Probably they mixed it better which was cutted out. Anyway one of the most inspiring vids I have seen. Especially likes his synth sampling approach, which gives a lot of freedom.
Totally agree. I tend to spend way too much time micromanaging individual sounds before I get the main building blocks down. He's doing the opposite. Really inspiring
Great Vid!!. I picked up a SY35 for £25 a few months ago. Absolutely one of my favourite synths and, incedentally, a great controller for a Wavestation SR
I'n the beginning I felt he was just fooling around and the music didn't sound that great. But, the end result really surprised me. I like his approach, he takes something very ruff and polishes in the end, I'm glad I watched this, it gave me a new view on making beats.
When the 4 on the floor drums started I was thinking, "God, don't ruin those great sounds with that crap", but the production and finished product was really nice. Pretty simple streamlined workflow too, great stuff.
Guys a legend for sure, i wonder is he recording all parts to tape in one hit and then send all back to ableton or maybe recording just some parts using different tracks on the tascam and sending pacific parts back to ableton
Great and inspiring! (I'm a bass player who's just starting out using synth bass, next to bass guitar in my new band. Curiosity and hunger for some entry level knowledge together with an old interest in synth/ elektronic music just might've 'RUclips-warped' me in some way to this master level video...)
That moment in the begining when you think ...you have surpassed legowalt.. Then at midpoint and in the ending he pulls a fast one with that voice sample .. Legowalt is insane. He has ear for that certain sound and mixes in so many things yet they are never out of balance. Its crazy me and him basically have the same production patterns.
For who did not follow: at the end the track is not just the composition of the clips, of course. In fact he used a way cleaner version of the clips in the drum rack and just the two tracks with the 303 emulator: one for the bassline and one for the lead sound. Some eqing and compression gave a fuller sound and clearly some effects and tweaks on the parameters of the lead were also added. The samples he took in the beginning were almost not present at the end. Apart from that, the vocal sample is also appearing here and there, which was the right decision.
Is it just me who's noticed that he didn't make a low-cut in the 15:00 mark? My OCD drives me crazy. Just kidding, solid workflow demo and awesome track. It inspires me to eventually go all hardware.
I meant "all hardware" in terms of generating sound. And yes, he's also using a TB-303 softsynth, Live's sampler etc., but all I meant is that this inspires me, personally, to eventually go all hardware.
I just love the physical connection between man and hardware, you know, work a little to get a nice sound, instead of having everything ready in the box. I would love to and maybe I will in a few years, considering it's super expensive to have so much hardware! Maybe a piece of gear every year would be a nice goal to look forward to.
@@altrogeruvah I get your point and I tend to agree. But just because you use a DAW doesn't mean you have to use anything "ready in the box". You can use the same workflow as for hardware, but with way more life quality tools.
Ive had the same tascam for years i used to run everything through it just wish they didn't break so much... Have to figure out how to fix it again, love it though. The 2x speed helps with it still being lofi and the speed knob is really nice

Im unfortunately learning this now 1st year into producing. Mix&Master is really the difference between basement band and touring headliner 😞
I wish Legowelt did a Podcast, or maybe read for books on tape. He is so calming.
he does, check his website
Just imagine him reading fairytales into a recorder. Instant naptime.
