- Watch and learn.
Flava D is one of the UK’s best club producers. Her meteoric rise began in 2012, releasing a string of belters on Butterz, contributing to the legendary Fabriclive mix series and collaborating with close friends DJ Q and Royal T as t q d, who make some of the finest garage and bassline being released today.
Having been responsible for FACT’s favorite episode of Against The Clock ever, we decided to visit her in her London studio to see how she makes a track with no time limit. Offering a rare insight into her production process, Flava D gives a step-by-step guide to everything from arranging drums to crafting a build-up.
Listen to the full track below and don’t miss Flava D’s headline show at London venue The Nest on Friday (March 3). UKG, the debut album from t q d, is released on March 17.

Honestly one of the best tutorials I've seen. I feel like it's common see a lot of people pulling intricate eq moves moves and complex DAW techniques but half the time their tunes don't sound nearly as dope as this. Just goes to show that using the right sounds to suit the vibe of your music is way more important than anything else.
Facts, facts
Making it perfect you do as the last step
ao much better than against the clock, let them lil producers breathe ya feel me
I was just gonna say the same thing. this was great
i music I know, right?! Gotta let them flow
hopefully, the ten minute beat thing is load of shite, where the art in rushing?
i see the AGC segments as a way of showing a quick look at an artist's workflow, not about creating a whole tune in 10 mins
no fuck that, look at gawt dayum every ATC comments, fulla haters, now watch as this video gon be everyone playing nice in the comments
'i had no one to teach me'
same girl. same. im so proud of u for doing it all by urself. i really look up to you.
We need more of these. Flava D is the one!
She is a perfect example to show that you don't need all this fancy gear or technical knowledge to make an amazing track! Love it
she has a bit of fairly fancy gear but i agree
@@archietaylor5964 agreed, she has play pro back speakers(over $1k) and midi key boards. I over here just have 120$ headphones and a keyboard kek. Still making tunes tho
the alesis keyboard (which i got) is less the 200 bux, the vodka on the shelves about 50 bux. thats all u need
Loved watching this tutorial! Really interesting watch & Big ups to Flava D.
She's so old school. I've produced since 1998 and I tell you now, she's old school. I love it
it's just awesome. Seeing creating one piece of stylish music made me really excited. Thanks for making great music.
Love it, so much better than against the clock because you're getting a real explanation of intent, and the artists style. Thank you!
RESPECT! Fast worker, knows the tools. More of these please!
i didnt know her (youtube recommend me). i am really impressed by the track quality and fast workflow. this girl rocks
always wondered how these track were made, this was awesome.
midnight club flow lol i luv it !
I'd love to see Lorn on either Against the Clock or How to make a track, I've seen a few interviews and the methods he uses for samples are insane.
AMEN
EtopiaCA Couldn't agree more ! Lorn is one of my fav producers of all time
Agreed , lorn has a unique style. Big Reaktor user, love his sound.
Hell yeah
Really like how she's not eqing the hell out of everything and just using the eq3.
I'm going to take this forward into my tracks
She smashed it out the park
I like these better than against the clock. More of these would be dope
Flava D is has mad skills & she's good at teaching as well. Last year she held an Ableton workshop in London that was super dope.
Sickk! Proper opened my eyes to building drums.
This was brilliant, looking forward to more like this hopefully.
queen of the game
I like this woman, she collects hats. They don't take as much room as shoes
What... are you talking about wearable hats or hi-hats? I'm so confused
hi-hats... its a double entendre.. kmon man keep up.
S W 5 Depends. Entendre literally just means ‘to understand’ in French so it doesn’t have to be an innuendo in a literal sense. Like in a lot of Hip Hop communities a double entendre just means a rap line with two meanings.
But yes, double entendres are generally innuendos
@@pc24367 kill joy
DUDe FLAVA D is on my top 5 of "Garage" artists, always love her sound and how she pulls off a lot of songs...and another thing I like about Garage are the CHORDS! my god the chords always go in!!!!
This was a great tutorial. Simple workflow that created a top notch mix, cheers!
Loved this, great to see different peoples workflow... Also loved her accent!!
Her hotkey game is strong. It takes me twice as long to produce lol.
I want to do this can you tell me what software to download
@@MrTeeteeboy she's using Ableton
@@MrTeeteeboy i think the best thing to do is to download a bunch of demos and try it out before you buy a daw
@@MrTeeteeboy but i have to say thats not something i did
kontakt it's another world, now a days it's difficult find producer with that creativity, it's absolutely pure disco sound.
No one ever seems to truly take advantage of Ableton's drum rack. You can create an entire sample sub mix as well as independent parallel/send busses, just in the drum rack alone. As well as adding entire instrument rack to one single sample cell. I understand the benefits of using separate audio tracks but I'm amazed at how many people don't utilize this for complex percussion and sampling instruments.
Sauce_Aux I use to use audio files religiously but as of recently I have started making use of Ableton's Drum Rack!
Itchy Dez it's such a great customizable tool!
Indeed ^^' It's also nice to be able to switch samples so easily too :D
Itchy Dez oh man! Don't even get me goin on zone and key mapping !
drum rack lacks punch on the kick , that's why most producers who use a live workflow will layer drums in a session, great tutorial but I must point out, having too many sample packs will limit your workflow, having less you can develop your sound more and bring your ideas out
I really enjoyed this tutorial Flava D
this is so good, definitely making a dance track today Flava shut it down!
The all famous vengeance DA-Vocal. Can't leave that one out EVER. :D
Been waiting for this for soooooo long man
"ok let's start with a kick"
-every producer ever
I sometimes starts with chords myself lol
lets start with the hi hats
Gosh, I wonder if it'll be '4 on the floor' with hats on the 'ands'?
@@_P_M_ Called off-beat dumbass
i start with different things every time as i get bored easily
YO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS FOR THIS MOMENT
what moment?
A full Video Of Flava D Producing lol Last One Was Way too Short
wasn't a fan of against the clock lol
haha fair enough
this is a great format...please do more of these!
This really inspires me to make more music and to keep on going.
Damn...I like the sound of this a lot. And I like the view from the studio.
Girl you're amazing, just having fun
Been putting it off and off and off, when I get home I'm gonna boot up my computer and finally get to grips with FL studio or ableton.. This shit inspired me

That track sounded awesome
She's really good at narrating what she's doing while she's working, too.
Great! Love it!

Sounds great!
I love this girl.
nice, good commentary, editing, and great producer :)
First saw/heard her on getdarker tv !!! Killed it
I love this girl after 10 months, true love?
I love what she is doing.
Much easier to learn from these videos than against the clock
I am downloading a copy of Ableton as we speak. Love her track making skills. BTW, This sounds like NYC in the background. Subway track screech? And cop sirens?
More of this please !!
Oi whats this "Leng Flava Nov 16 Dread vocals" i see? samples for another collab?
This is what i needed thank u
Amazing workflow!!
More vidios like this please!
really like that typical garage stabs she added in the last, killer. Anybody who know how to make that garage sound @19:35
Simar Singh the "more than a bassline" tutorial with Jon selway on the dubspot channel will get you most of the way there
open operator and select a square wave, then go for a thick filter envelope, a bit of reverb and u should be quite good.
thanks
thanks
Just buy korg m1, Yamaha dx, select organ, pad, short decay, bring the release back, add bit of attack, play the A Min 7th chord on tripplets, but has to be very light on the off beats of the groove, it has to bounce less volume, you can do this with any synth or daw, I'm just telling you how I use to make this sound back in the days
really cool, she has great workflow and vision, and she's a babe!
AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try get DJ Q on PLZZZZZ
Just fell in love.
Late to this party. Solid video
I love each member of t d q but I like Flava's productions the most for pure choooooons
C Martinez her style is just dj qs
Flava D is dropping gems left and right, like creating headroom by EQ'ing each sample, stacking and panning hats, et al. Also have always wondered about those plastic UK Garage style bass sounds she uses, shocked that it's just Operator in Ableton. Wonder if the Bass Station II ever makes it onto her tracks.
operator is a solid synth, just goes to show you don't need loads of expensive vst's to make stuff
Good point. Guess I've just overlooked the presets, and programming FM synths isn't easy. But in Ableton, the way she does her drum tracks, do you know if it's possible to Groove quantize a group of one shots to add swing? So many questions. Great video.
BRILLIANT track
Always need more vocals, glad it's not just me :D
Anyone else seen Flava D 🔥 such a boss
Cool how many trax have you put out !! Just looked TONS
I've seen a lot of the producers on ATC using the temporal view on ableton rather than the scene view. I generally like using the scene view to be able to play it live then set it all together in the temporal view. I hear Flava D saying "there's probably a faster way" and in my opinion doing it in the scene view makes it much easier to have different scenes that you can put together. You could always click a scene in temporal view to play around with the notes. I dunno, anyone else do the same thing? I guess at the end of the day you go with whatever works for you, and in this case she does a good job, but in terms of convenience I find my method is much easier to produce a track with.
sick stuff. props! keep it up girl
9:12 reminded me of 'Same' by Smith & Mighty
damn this track is dope AF.
I love flava d ❤
thank you so much
I tried using ableton once it felt like I was studying for quantum physics 😆
Haha try using logic then 😂😂
Fl is the way to go
it looks too much like excel XD ;-)
Yeah i felt the same first time i tried Ableton, but it's actually just as easy as FL once you get into the flow
I have both FL and Ableton, I use FL more (been using it since 2006, took it seriously in 2008) so I know my way around it better, but Ableton does has its perks. The session view reminds me of the step sequencer in FL, helps me flesh out ideas before putting it in arrangement view.
This is DOPE!
amazing!
Wow you have amazing music taste
Nice work
starts to get extra wavy @ about 20 mins in
Putting that Kontact freeware to use!
Where can I find this TRACK ?
