I actually loved Deserts of Kharak. It carried the spirit of the Homeworld games perfectly, and it showed the franchise can move to a new setting and gameplay space quite handily. Im hopeful that Blackbird can pull off Homeworld 3 later in the year. I think they just 'get' Homeworld.
I'm only half way through the game and not usually an RTS player, but I absolutely fell in love with the vibe of this game. The units feel weighty unlike in Blizzard RTS, but not unwieldy like in Company of Heroes. The gameplay is not micro intensive so that I can kick back and enjoy things blowing up.
I bought it because I thought if I squint it can pass as a Dune RTS. 3 hours later, I was invested in its own lore and narrative and can't wait to play Homeworld Remastered when I'm done with it.
Deserts of Kharak really surprised me and I fell in love with it. It also made me a Homeworld fan in general (as this game was my introduction to Homeworld as a franchise). It's also kinda the best Dune game ever made, if you will. Can't wait for Homeworld 3.
The original manual story from HW1 plus the DOK additions could actually make an exceptional story in another medium on its own. The creative team really knows how to do sincere work that delivers quality on all fronts. Many of my and even your complaints are trivial or preferential at best which is the way it should be. It would be nice if other devs were even slightly sincere in their work.
The fig thing just seemed like people misunderstanding the platform and accusing them of doing something they weren't.
Great review. I'm surprised you didn't mention more of the details of the vfx. Whatever unusual style they are using is beautiful.
