This comment made me realize why a tangent is called a tangent. This is because a conversation or story is like a circle. A tangent line of a circle is a line extending from exactly one point of a circle and thus perpendicular to the radius connecting that tangent point and the center point. The tangent of an angle of a right triangle equals the opposite side of the angle over the adjacent side of that angle. Besides, how to people come up with these formulas? Like for the volume of a sphere, how in the heck do you get (4/3)*pi*r^3 and that's not even the most ridiculous one! The weirdest formulas are probably some that I havent even learned yet. We had a student teacher come in once so he could get some teaching experience in an actual class and he was teaching us about proofs and all these theorems and postulates and just writing, writing, and writing, and I'm like, dude, its math you plug stuff in, answers come out. We dont need to make our own instructions just because we need to show work. Wait...

  • @sethblumenthal7419

Here’s my explanation: DeGrom is easily the Mets’ best starter, so he is first in their pitching rotation and therefore usually faces the opponent’s best starter. Hutchison, however, is at the bottom of the Jays’ rotation and is up against opposing teams’ worst starters. This (among other factors) could account for the difference in offensive run support, as Blue Jays batters are facing easy pitchers when Hutchison starts but Mets batters are facing hard pitchers when DeGrom starts.

Well Hutchison put up a 2.11 ERA in 9 appearances for the Tigers this year. But if you look at the underlying metrics, it seems to be really unsustainable. With a 4.39 FIP, 5.93 xFIP and 5.98 SIERA the numbers don’t look like they’d be too kind to him over an extended period of time. It seems he was helped a lot by a seemingly unsustainable 3.8% HR/FB rate and Steamer projects him with a 5.29 ERA if he were to get regular playing time in 2022

It's funny coming back to this video as a Tigers fan because Drew Hutchison actually did pitch for us, and he did pretty well too! He mostly just pitched out of the bullpen with a couple short starts here and there, but he finished the season with a 2.11 ERA in just over 20 innings. His FIP (4.39) and WHIP (1.453) weren't stellar, but I would definitely say he was an overall net positive for us!

The Pirates trading multiple players for Hutchinson (and a bloated contract) after this was quite amusing.
Also, reminds of the year Kent Bottenfield, an ordinary but reliable SP for the Cards, won 15+ games and even got to go to the All Star Game, despite being the same ordinary pitcher... just with incidentally more wins!

The problem with mapping the ocean floor is pressure. It's much easier to pressurize a spaceship because of the vacuum. You can use thin material and pressurize it to low amount since there's nothing pushing on it and trying to crush it. When you go deep underwater you need stronger metals so you can resist the massive crushing force being exerted by the water colum that's above you, and you need a much higher internal pressure in the vessel
