My intro card was done by Unicornism, and my intro music was written by Epic Game Music.
Hehe, that intro is stellar. Spoopy. As is all the detailed info on the game and the genre in general, I really dig that kinda stuff!
2spoopy4u
jockslap really? Actually, forget I said that. I'm totally immune to jumpscares
Did you know, there was a remake which looked actually really promising.... unfortunately it was cancelled
I appreciate the Clocktower music at the beginning.
I appreciate her, she's got a wikid twist and humour about her hasn't she 😊😊
FYI: The blood is still in my shower and on my mirror as I write this comment. Halloween decor and all.
Put a skeleton in the shower so the feed me is kind of a pun.
"He's all skin and bones... minus the skin. Huehuehue"
DeathDealer1997 I still wash. I simply wash in a shower with blood written all over the wall. It's not weird, I swear.
Dat Clocktower sfx tho.
Dat Awesome Jumpscare tho.
Dat great review tho!
Due to the awesome make-up job this year, I can no longer call you Roses until after Halloween. Until November 1st, you'll be "Spooky Sexy Internet Lady". Rock on, stay awesome...and happy Halloween.
After you said 'AitD requires evasion and problem solving' I would add: 'and evasion by moving furniture and problem solving by moving furniture.' That is my lingering memory from having played the game a long time ago, might give it another go after watching this.
Everyone knows Pac-man is the first survival horror game.
Hahahahaha XD
lmaaao
Pong was the first existential horror game.
You know....you're not wrong you're isolated running from ghosts vulnerable and have to use items to survive
This deserves more liked
Your scary face makeup is really well done. You're a hell of an artist.
Couldn'thave said it better. I'm envious.
Thanks. 2 hours of make up for 20 minutes of filming. That's how I roll.
She does look strangely beautiful done up like that. No less so than usual of course.
I doubt Nostalgia Critic would spend two hours on makeup for 20 minutes of filming, so that's some damn dedication right there.
I really love that look
+KaylaTheMage Each brain interprets fear differently. Which is rather good in a way, because at least the ratio of people pissed at me for being scared to not being scared is nice and balanced.
Perfectly balanced!
I remember seeing this game and being blown away. One of the first times I really wanted to get an IBM compatible and toss my Amiga aside.
I remember like it was yesterday, when I we first started this amazing gem, with my stepdad. I was blown away with everything about this game.
"They want you dead"
*shows footage of ghosts dancing minding their own business*
Of all of times I've seen this game on the internet, this is the first time I've seen gameplay using the female protagonist. Heck, I didn't even know you can play as a female in this game. That or I don't remember anymore because I'm used to seeing the male protagonist.
That makeup is drop dead awesome.
Ryan McNeila That has nothing to do with what he said, but ok
"Kill Everything You See With Your Muscles Bursting Out of Your Shirt Horror" - also known as Doom 3.
Doom 2016
THANK YOU for pronouncing "Infogrames" correctly.
+100 points.
Yes! I totally needed those points. I'll try not to spend them frivolously.
Wait... do people say "info-graymes?"
Curtis006
They do, it drives me nuts. In fact, have 100 more points, Roses, you earned them!
cmon now, nasalize em vowels girl
Ghost81 As someone who never heard the title pronounced before and always simply associated "grames" as some kind of weird take on "games," I have long been one of those who pronounced it with a long "A" when saying it.
I'll try not to do so in the future, but I cannae make any promises.
Honestly, I don't think the graphics are that bad. I'd much rather be looking at these graphics than those in Ride to Hell: Retribution, that's for sure...
The more I played it, the more I appreciated the graphics. There was a part of me that was very off-put when I initially booted it up, but it grew on me by the end. Though, some angles and frames really do make Emily Hartwood look like a weird blow up doll with massive lips.
PushingUpRoses Agreed on the lips part; I'd say it's really the only problematic part of the character model (when taking into account the obvious limitations).
I seriously thought it was going to be LGR in the shower XD
Roxas4ever same
same xD
That would be hilarious, imagine him in a bathing suit normally showering and being surprised
When I was in elementary school Alone Came Out. I remember me and my buddy played it for weeks trying to beat it. The first room moving the chest to cover the attic door took us all night to figure out.
Great video PushingUpRoses
ah I had so much fun and frustration with this game back in the day, such nostalgia. also awesome work on the scary makeup, very cool
Love the amount of detail and effort you put into your videos, every single one is among my favourites!
Thank you; it means a lot to me that people notice. :)
Coming back to this since the Alone in the Dark remake is coming out.
Can't wait for the upcoming remake!
I remember being 5 watching my dad play this, creeped me out but I couldn’t stop watching!
Inventory/item management is another core pillar of survival horror, from Alone in The Dark, Resident Evil and Silent Hill to System Shock 2 and Amnesia, I think it's an essential part of the genre. With out that, you get... I dunno, Doom3/RE6/Dead Space 2/Amnesia 2?
Absolutely agreed. In fact, I find the lighting systems (making sure your lamp is filled, finding oil, not wasting it too quickly) is a big pattern in these games. It almost seemed like Amnesia really took a lot of inspiration from AitD with the lighting stuff.
creepy makeup & jump scare after a fake out....
Excellent way to begin a review!!!
The thing about Alone In The Dark is that it was brilliant in it's use of puzzles. Nearly every puzzle, no matter how obscure or bizarre, has a heavy clue if not a note outright telling you the solution if you are clever enough to know what goes with what. For instance, you might not think to use the lantern to defeat the final boss, but, as shown in this video, there is a huge painting the wall showing exactly what you need to do to defeat the boss hanging in the hallway in the game. you walk past it dozens of times. It's just all about whether or not you pay attention. I really loved that.
the camera angles are absolutely wonderful. its amazing how much of this game is obviously lifted by later games like silent hill and stuff.
I love how you used clock tower music, and the make up... Geez, that was awesome.
Alone In The Dark is a great classic. Even Uwe Boll couldn't destroy (and he tried hard!) the legacy of this great game. I loved the atmosphere and the CD audio soundtrack worked really
I'm so glad to see this old game remembered, it's cool that it supported playing as his niece, I played as the dude. It has always stuck with me since when it was new; It was very hard and I remember dying MANY times on probably every screen and monster. This video was just recommended in May 2019, I always learn something from the games you cover, excellent work!
Emily's story does seem more interesting. I've seen other reviews and retrospectives of AITD but the male reviewers never care to mention the female character or her backstory. Sometimes, not even her name. Thank you for the information. It's sad that certain aspects of a game (even big ones, like an ENTIRELY PLAYABLE CHARACTER) can go completely ignored by a person because of laziness and/or misogyny.
...It has nothing to do with either laziness or misogyny. The game offers you the choice. I've never once seen any reviewer besmirch the game for giving you the choice.
Most people that play games are boys. Most people pick a character like themselves. That's not misogyny.
I still remember someone seeing that I, a male, had a female character in Star Wars Jedi Academy. They thought I had some kind of weird sexual fetish going on. Actually, some different things happen in that game depending on gender.. So I wanted to see what would happen. I beat it as a male first. I wasn't for or against women, I was just playing all the options..
So.. Ever wonder why there's more white male characters in comic books and video games and things..? Well, that's simple. That's who's making these things, primarily. Get more females and racially diverse people CREATING things and you'll see a change. People aren't racist they just make what they know.
@@anonamatron I actually kinda agree with you there.
I've always ignored this franchise, thinking it was some kind of resident evil copycat. How backwards... Maybe new entries are, but this original is so colorful and I love how it's a period piece. Also, I really dig the early PlayStation polygonal look. Totally trying this game.
3DO got the port so to be more accurate it's a 3DO polygonal look
Miasmark yea, I was going for "era" more than specific platform, but good to know.
Resident evil released 4 years later which makes resident evil the copycat

"You know, I'm having second thoughts about this adoption...I think I'll give you guys a call..."
Amazing makeup, narration and explanation of survival horror. Keep up the good work.
I love you Roses but godDAMN that opening was scary as hell. Very well done.
Never got to play this game, but now I'm seriously considering it. Thanks!
played it back then and thought it was awesome and quite revolutionary in it's concept. definitely a must play
One thing you didn't quite mention is how good the game is about giving you clues to defeat the enemies within the writing you find scattered around the mansion. It's rare to find an adventure game that tells you the answers to all of it's puzzles, even if it is it's so obscure that you usually miss it.
On break at work and spending it enjoying some Roses video goodness. I regret nothing.
Aaaaa! You're just so good with makeup and spooky stuff! Great halloween special, it's been a joy to watch.
+PushingUpRoses you look amazing in this video!
My dad bought this game for me as a surprise when he got a new computer, unfortunately he installed it and threw everything away so I had no idea how to play the game or even what it was about. So I played, over and over, for weeks, until I figured out the mechanics and finally got out of that attic. I eventually finished the game and was completely blown away by it.
Fast forward to my friend getting a PS1 with Resident Evil and no memory card. He had no idea how to play the game, but when I came over it immediately reminded me of AitD. We figured out RE1 and beat it eventually without saving at all!
To me these games, along with Silent Hill a bit later, form the backbone of the good old days of survival horror
I like the intro sound design, where something breaks, and then there is what could be glass shattering turned into music. Even if it was unintentional.
I like this based on the Clock Tower intro alone, pretty sweet. And the bird!
I would love a remake of Alone In The Dark 1-3 one day!!!
A really sweet game i revisit every few years or so. The thing that brings me back are the books and the narration of them. Also if you know what you are doing it is very short.
3D Monster Maze for the ZX81 was the first! Glad you mentioned that.
Oh my gosh, that beginning skit was like my worst nightmare. Sometimes when I go to the bathroom I see the shower curtain, and I’m like what if someone was just hiding behind there?
I actually like the way it looks.
It reminds me of the great parts of my childhood.
But Holy Woah does the running look (and must feel) like ya runnin' through honey mixed with quick sand while most of you was covered in cement!
Very nice. I am loving your videos. I was born in 86 and I have alot of good memories of things that your channel reviews. It's very soothing and refreshing. Also your enthusiasm is perfect.
I think the camera angles in the Alone In The Dark games are so creative, at least when compared to old RE angles.
That sphincter thing at the door is the strangest gate keeper they could have come up with, haha.
OMG I totally respect your dedication to dress up for the spoopiest of months in what can only be described as one of the spoopiest things I have seen in some time
Another excellent retrospective!
I'm surprised you didn't mention Sweet Home as a pioneer of survival horror? I know it's more of a role playing game but it was the inspiration for Resident Evil. Plus the Sweet Home movie is so ridiculously 80's and I love it!
Hehe. "...You poly-brothers can't deny!"
The first true survival horror game was clearly SkiFree. That yeti was terrifying.
This was my favorite game growing up. First survival horror game I ever played.
Excellent! For a moment, I thought you were going to discuss the entire Alone in the Dark series, but talking about the beginnings of survival horror works too.
Awesome hair + makeup!
Interesting video.
The tentacle thing is supposed to be a Chthonian (an old Lovecraft monster, looks like a big snake/worm thing with a mass of tentacles for a face)
And... was that Yog-Sothoth who one-shot her in the gramophone room?
Love this video so much.
Sweet Home actually IS Resident Evil. Resident Evil was originally called Sweet Home - a 3D remake of the older game. However, Capcom lost the rights to the license, so they had to drop the title.
Also, I highly recommend seeing the Sweet Home film - the original game was based on it.
I wasn't expecting a review of alone in the dark.I never played any of them pur,but ive all ways heard how much the series influence survival horror.
You walking around with the candle reminded me of Amnesia. That is one of the only games to truly scare me at times.
I'm still impressed at how your makeup looks so good on every single video
Like dang I've gone four years back at this point
Love your look and the use of the clocktower music
I just finished AITD, and am working on the second game. I think it is a game every player should experience, at the very least so they can appreciate how far the technology has come. Especially since you can easily beat the game in 20 minutes with a walkthrough.
Hell yeah! You brought me back to memory lane. This was my first horror game when I was a little wad. I loved it!
That opening XD awesome . I also enjoy alone in the dark one of the games that came with my first computer, the werefrogwolf scared the hell out of me as a kid and it took me years to beat it XD
Fantastic game! I still have fond memories of playing it with my dad, and I recently completed it again after all those years. Also, I believe it is said that the giant hellworm in the catacombs is supposed to be a Cthonian, who were introduced in the Lovecraft mythos by Brian Lumley :)
Love the clock tower intro, you use the music alot, like the top 10 deaths is sierra games.
Great vid as usual. The Lovecraft atmosphere in this game is awesome. And same as in 7th Guest i love how the house is full of supernatural surprises. I wish they would remaster this game like they did with the first Resident Evil......
BTW: If you haven't played already, The Last Door is also an excellent Lovecraft inspired horror game and even if it's very pixelated it's still very scary.
Well done, Roses. That intro got me and I found it to be scarier than any horror game I've played in the last several months. 2spoopy.
God I love the mix of your Halloween getup and tattoos
I remember playing the shareware demo of this a lot as a kid. The iterative trial&error of advancing was pretty fun back then.
The intro scared the piss out of me. I totally wasn't expecting that jump scare, yet I totally should have.
you know, I played this game not more than 2 months ago
I'm still surprised how actually scary it still can be
Love the Clock Tower music! XD
I don't even play PC video games but you and LGR do such interesting and entertaining videos that it doesn't even matter! Keep up the great content and have a happy Halloween!
one of the best "Alone" specials EVER.
Three people got scared and held it against you.
Liked first one, good balance between action and puzzles. Did't like the second, too much shooting. Funny thing - adventure parts aging much much better then the action.
I actually laughed at loud when you panned up to "I'm in the shower".
It does look like ass, but back in 1992 I couldn't believe how awesome it was! Great video!
Just discovered your channel this morning, love it!! And you're make up here looks amazing. Props bud, mad props.
Alone in the Dark is one of my favourite games. It makes me happy to see a professional RUclipsr reviewing it!
So yeah, cool. Made my breakfast time much nicer
I love you and your videos Roses. You are the best and my favorite youtuber. keep up the fantastic work.
That makeup is amazing. Sweet vid
You honestly cover every random game I had as a child, this one game was on some random demo program that came with battle chess. You could only do the first room but the gun had unlimited ammo, but the monsters never stopped coming...
I would argue that the selective use of silence makes things scarier. The strategy behind the original 4 Silent Hill games. To quote the audio director, "Silence is a sound all its own" and seeing the changing camera angles I can really see how it influenced Silent Hill. And side note your make up and hair are on point
I played this in college (yup, I'm that old) and loved it. Hilariously, when my roommate, who owned the game and computer, upgraded the hardware, the game ran at 3x the speed and was impossible to play.
I remember my roommate in college playing this game, and his utter frustration at it. I could tell from the hallway when he was playing it just by the swearing.
you are cool. i like your videos. and your tattoos are awesome.
Like the review, love the makeup. You rock that spooky look, girl.
loving the corpse paint!
I have been binging her videos, they are all so good!
"Survival Horror" was a moniker invented by the japanese out of their habit for nonsensical prefixes for games. Much like how Metal Gear is "Tactical Espionage Action: Metal Gear Solid" or the anime "Parallel Trouble Adventure Dual!". Initially, people made fun of the word "survival horror" as much as they made fun or "the master of unlocking". Right up until they didn't anymore...
It always bothered me since Resident Evil was then retroactively called "survival horror" when Infogrames intentionally described it as "virtual mystery", which I think is more fitting.
Great video and as always a wonderful job on your makeup , loved it !
Very cool video! Such a shame I couldn't see it until now.
And oh dear, that Clock Tower music and sound effects... this is enough to creep me out!
Roses, kudos to your use of the Clock Tower theme. I'm not even a minute in and I already love this video.
I wonder if anyone's ever dressed up as Bobby/the Scissorman for Halloween?
I know this is 4 years late but I just discovered the channel so:
DAMN THAT EYELINER IS ON POINT!
Cool review with some good retro info and points for those unfamiliar with this game. Nicely done.
Sick makeup! and even better review this game blew me away when it first came out ...yea I'm that old lol
Love your channel, my friend. Keep up the brilliant work!
People can call me crazy, but to me, this is STILL one of the scariest games I have ever played.
The fact that it is so obsolete and clunky today, even makes it scarier to me.
I was into horror from a very early age. I identified with the classic Universal Monsters, and I found a stark beauty to horror fiction, and imagery. A friend of mine gave me a burnt copy of this game when I was around 12. By then, I was an established "horror kid", and I was very intrigued by this old game. Lovecraft was already one of my idols. And then I played it. From start to finish. Laugh if you want to, but I had never had nightmares caused by a video game until I played this one. I had played Resident Evil 1, and thought it was creepy and fun to play. But Alone in the Dark, really did give me nightmares. I kept having these horrifyingly real dreams, where I was trapped in the Decerto mansion, with certain death awaiting around every corner.
It still sends a cold shiver down my spine. To this very day.
Thanks a bunch! Love the genre, even its humble beginnings. I first played AITD on a Mac (probably in Interplay port) and it was SLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW. I remember thinking 3D has no future in games...
