"If you do a thief, don't forget your licence!"
Hey, that's some Pratchett-level stuff x)
Well I for one became a thief to follow the law.
These games meant so much to me as a kid, you did a fantastic job covering these!
I mean, the game is great and all... but the free Prodigy is the real deal here.
The nostalgia! It burns!
The love I have for this game is off the charts!
“The cheese represents the folklore.”
-PushingUpRoses, 2018
I first played the Quest series only 4 years ago. Even in this modern age the gameplay and exploration really draws you in.
Good job Roses, Can't wait to see the DRAGONFIRE ONE ;)
Meeee toooooo. :D
Ugghhh dragonfire was the worst in the series :P
On second thought let's not. Dragonfire is a silly place.
It's my favorite one, so I guess you won't be looking forward to that particular video.
SpaceHamster
Hi Hammy
I love this game. I just replayed it last month for the first time since I originally played back in '89.
I kept trying to tell the sheriff I robbed his house but he wouldn't listen.
Prodigy? Wow... that was the first Internet Service Provider we had in my house, back in the mid-90s.
Oh man, your original LP for QFG is what introduced me to the franchise & I'm very grateful for that since they are fantastic games. Looking forward to seeing your hot takes on 2-4 in particular since I already know your fondness for Dragonfire ;)
I'm so glad you're covering this 💖
I know right. Can't wait to watch this tonight!
I always see you everywhere. It's good to see you again. You have good taste
It's because she IS everything. There is your explanation.
That was a good review Roses. One thing though, you never need to run from anyone in this game. That is because one of the first grinds you need to do is go to the clearing with unlimited goblins and keep killing the little suckers until you are a total badass. This works no matter which profession you chose. As a result the warrior is probably the most useless character to play while the wizard is the easiest, especially when it comes to solving the puzzles. The thief fits somewhere in the middle and depending on how you feel about stealing the most fun to play.
A town named Spielberg.
I hope to find Archeologists, Aliens, Dinosaurs, and Video games in this Town.
Don't forget about Nazis!
Bryce Mckenzie And sharks
"spiel" means "game". So the place is basically named Gametown.
They spared no expense!
If you play the VGA remake, you will find a dinosaur. Just not the one that you're expecting. ;)
8:11. Dat Key and Peele reference. Great video Roses. Looking forward to the next chapter in Robert Smith's adventures.
Tallguy that was actually The 90’s workout 🏋️♂️Music by Ty Parr. Key and Peele took a hilarious take on that Cringey Crystal Lite Spandex nightmare
You _would_ find skulls cute.
Is this really a problem in any way, shape, or form? ;p
That's because we're totally cute.
Exactly. ;p
This gives me chills. I lost weeks to this game and the background of the magic shop gave me an actual nightmare.
Man this brings back memories. One of our teachers installed this on our high school's library computer but we had no manual. We all used to sit around during our free time and after school trying to figure out how to progress.
This was probably one of my favorite videos for PUR yet
I guess the manual that came with the game would have been helpful. Never thought about that until this video actually, but I began playing this game before I could barely read! Took me years to beat. I remembered my grandma was proud, annoyed, and mad with a mixture of: I beat it before she did and I didn't beat it with her. My reaction was "What?? I have to beat the game again??" Changed my perspective on gaming entirely. Thank you for the retrospective, PushingUpRoses!
It's something I know a lot of people overlook when playing classic games from this era: the manuals are meant to be read. Many times the game not only expects this, but requires it. It was not yet an accepted practice to feature entirely in-game tutorials and interface lessons, and in many cases it was also simply not technically feasible. It's a difference in expectations at the time. After all, if you owned a computer or gaming console at this time, you were very likely to have read a lot of documentation merely in the process of being a _user_ (in the TRON sense, not in the modern consumer sense).
Of course, youth such as yourself had a very good excuse. ;) My younger brothers played these games as they were learning to read & write, and frequently asked us how to spell words so that they could type them in. Eventually they didn't need to do this anymore. It was subversively quite an edutainment title!
@@JosephDavies Oh yeah even up until Metal Gear I believe there was something that required you to look at the back of the case or manual. Given we often needed the CD keys to play PC games it was a reasonable assumption that you had the manual.
@@Spaced92 That's a good point! For games of a certain era, you kept that manual if for nothing else than you'd be unable to even start without it!
You can make a Fighter/Thief/Mage in this game. Start off as a Fighter, then put points into Magic and Climbing. You lose out on Zap but that is all. Then when you import this character into II you magically get zap, though I think you lose you shield, but you can but a new one. This really helps out in III.
I LOVED that lets play.. is that 8 years ago? Oh my freakin goodness. I remember that so clearly though.
I might go back and watch that and the sequel lets play you did.
that lets play is actually the reason i ever found this channel so... can't be so bad right?
I watched that LP a few months back. Good times~
So... your favorite character was the skull... hmmm... somehow I think we were expecting that...
A friend from school gave this game to me second hand back in 6th grade. Just the disks, no manual. I couldn't feel any sense of nostalgia at 11 years old and I played as a Magic User, but it looks like we had a very similar experience over all. It was a blast to explore and talk to these characters! It felt alive, like anything could happen! But my poor mage body couldn't survive combat so there was a lot of running away from things. Good times.
This game really does have a place in my heart. And my hands, since it forced me to learn to type at a respectable speed.
CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER
Beat Cop, Vegas Showman, or Vampire
Joining the Vampire Guild sucks.
@@futonrevolution7671 Lame.
Dare I say, this is a *glorious* video? It's really a testament to how much you've grown as a content creator.
Arrowdodger you forgot to tip your fedora and add M'lady. Just kidding
Thanks for covering these games. This series got me through high school.
I loved the Thief class. With that one, you could do everything that the other classes could, except wielding a sword, and you got to see all of the content that the game(s) had to offer.
I used thief with magic skills too. and I remember when I imported my character into number 2 they gave me a sword!!
I totally just finished watching that LP. You and paw worked off each other so well.
The cutest person in RUclips talking about one of my childhood memories... I'm happy :)
YES I loved the QFG series while growing up. Played through all the games, multiple times!
I'm not too big into PC games, but after watching this, I really want to check it out! I'm looking forward to the rest of this series :)
I haven't been following your channel for very long, but I really enjoy your style of presentation, as well as your insights. the little edits and easter eggs (dunno if I can call it that but hearing the "Avril" bit was a cool surprise) in this vid are a lot of fun!
Lori and Cory are currently working on Hero U. It is in beta right now for anyone interested they can look it up Kickstarter or go directly to the games web page. FYI
The game's website is here: hero-u.com/
They also have a Steam page and the rest are coming soon! :D
Joseph Davies thanks joe.
My parents bought this for my brother and I when it came out. We eventually beat it after a lot of trial and error. Thanks for the memories!
13:30 I did that kind of map too lol. this was a wonderful review, PUR....So You Want To Be a Hero got me into gaming and RPGing in RL. i agree, I loved the typing out commands/comments rather than point and click. Can't wait for your coverage of QFG2, my favorite all time RPG.
Absolutely LOVED this game on the Amiga! Thanks for making this video! You got me to purchase a copy.
Thanks for covering this, the Quest for Glory series has a special place in my heart and I enjoyed hearing your take.
watching these videos to soothe my anxiety right now and they help a lot. thank you for the wholesome content. I don't even play games but I really enjoy your reviews and videos on Murder She Wrote/Goosebumps etc.
Ure awesome Rose!❤❤ The QfG series captivated me when I was young and became the basis for my love of RPG’s. I still play them all to this day. The fourth one is my favorite. Although the second is a close second. Lol.
Big O! it's Showtime!!!! - Roger Smith
Definitely a hero we all need. Love your videos.
Ah Quest for Glory. One of my personal childhood favorites (Especially 4). Glad to see you covering this.
Yay! I love love love love love this series. It was what introduced me to Sierra Games and I still play them every few years . . . I think it may be time to revisit them . . . .
Also . . . excellent choice of name for your character!
The nod to that gymnastics/athletics 80s video made me giggle, I love that video! and I love you!
Razzle Dazzle Rootbeer! Yay it's nice to finally hear you talk about my favorite game series :D
Love the humor in this video, I laughed quite a bit. Also this is making me remember Spoony's Ultima retrospective. I love these look-backs at old PC games. They're the kinds of games that would have, should have, been my jam (pretty much all the Sierra and LucasArts Adventures games you've talked about and the aforementioned Ultima series) but because we never had a decent computer for gaming growing up, I missed out on a huge portion of PC gaming from the late 80s, early 90s.
It's really great that these games are still getting so much love and time. I loved them as a kid, sadly somehow now I don't enjoy them as much. But it's great that they're still enjoyed and loved. It's also gotta be one of the most charming old-school artstyles ever. GoG has been teasing me with MYST and the sequels forever now and I'm afraid of going back and not liking them as much as back in the day :P
This is gonna be an interesting series, thumbs up!
I'm so excited you're doing a retrospective on this series! My favourite games from my childhood!
Aaaaargh?! My favorite game (series) when I was young.. great video, thanks! All the best from New Zealand 🇳🇿❤
You gotta cover Heroine's Quest one day! It's a love letter to Sierra games! You'll love it Roses!
How coincidental!!! I was JUST getting back into a Quest for Glory binge lately, so your timing is perfect!! Looking forward to hearing your reviews of all the games, especially 4! ;)
I'm so happy I searched for a QFG documentary. This was great
I missed this when it was uploaded but incidentally I was playing the first game at the time. Working on the second game now. Watching your play through long ago helped me know how to complete it.
I remember watching you and Pawdugan play these adventure games alot. Most fondly remembered is the Kings Quest 3 fan remake.
Just wanted to say I enjoy your videos and I hope you keep up the good work.
I am so glad I found this channel. Just found it today and it's already my fucking favorite. My SOUL MATE.
My favorite adventure game series. Thanks!
i remember watching you play that, i just found your channel and binged watched your videos. Made me want to go back to MUD for a while. Which are fun.
Awesome video Miss Roses! So good to see you back (in black) 👏👏
Thanks for this review, really takes me back. I played this as a kid on my 386 laptop under the original name Hero's Quest. Oddly enough I also had the board game you mentioned, but I never made the connection as to why the video game changed its name until now.
Some random tidbits:
- Stealth is levelled up by screen transition. If you go to (say) the top of town and wiggle back and forth in sneak modes, it'll level your stealth up faster.
- Even doing this stealth isn't super useful
- There's a lot of stuff in this game that you can do even as the 'wrong' type - fighters and mages can access the thief guild by blurting possible passwords
- If you HAVE Magic as a stat, you can still play Mage's maze with Erasmus
- If there's something unique for fighters in this game I legit cannot think of it
- The cartwheeler is the Brigand Warlock!
God, I loved this game. Thanks for the video!
Glad I stumbled into your channel! So nostalgic seeing you cover all these old Sierra games! Been wanting to play them again! I used to pick fighter as my character, but feed points into the wizard and thief traits so I could do everything, lol. I like that after I became a Paladin, in the 4th game using my thieving abilities to obtain riches actually worked negatively towards my points.
So excited for this series. Foundational games for me big time.
Much love for this game series. Can't wait to see what you have to say about the other games in the series.
Wow! This series seems really interesting! Mixing adventure game mechanics with RPG mechanics seems like a perfect match!
OMG...I just discovered your channel and it's like you're chronicling my childhood lol...I still have the original Sierra games from when I was a kid! Space Quest was my fav from Sierra Online 🙂
I just uploaded my first few terrible videos, so it's good to know great youtubers like you went through the same thing. Love your videos!
I've been hoping that you'd cover this series for years. Thanks.
Nice to see this series get some attention, seems like it is often forgotten. Also, really digging your make-up in this video.
I had a Hero's Quest box for Amiga! God, I love this game. Still play it like once a year, always as the thief as well
No rest for the weary! Replayed this last year on my 40 inch tv to experience it as new again.
The Quest for Glory series was a formative part of my computer gaming experience. This was awesome to watch! I shall now drown in my own nostalgia...and then watch your Trial By Fire vid. :D
One of my all time favs. Well done.
Yes!!! This is one of my favorites series.
lmao That realization at 5:16 is everything! 💡🤔🙌
Excellent capture and integer scaling. Looks great and accurate.
I agree with you on alot of your opinions about classic gaming
Absolutely loved this series!
I love the videos where you are seen in them throughout.
Awesome. So happy to see this!
One of my all time favorites
Whoo! Q4G! Can't wait for you to to get to Shadow of Darkness. That was my first and one of my first introductions to this kind of tongue in cheek fantasy comedy. Love your videos Roses! You spark all my nostalgia senses and I love it!
Yay! I’m so glad you are covering the Quest for Glory games as it’s my favorite Sierra series and IV is one of my all time favorite games! :)
Yay! This is one of my favorite old series!
"Sneaking around town in a totally discrete manner." (Walking on tippy toes like a lunatic) That's just the best thing I've ever seen
Big thx for rekindling my forgotten (thought I lost it) passion for adventures and quests.
Watching these videos as I install old games to play later made me feel great.
Best of luck and keep on making those great vids!
Paw's let's play of this is one of the best I've ever seen. :D
Hey Roses, I've been super excited for this retrospective and I'm so glad you're covering it. This video was absolutely amazing, and I can't wait for the new ones. Keep up the awesome work. I'm psyched for this, and love that you're doing it right when Hero-U came out.
I'm so glad you are doing this series! I did the entire first game backwards...running around aimlessly until I rage quit. Then I read then manual and I was hooked. Played and replayed every game to feed the addiction. BTW play it through the SCUMMVM emulator instead of DOSBOX to hear the musical score on Roland MT32 sound. This series sounds incredible when it's not emulating Soundblaster.
Super looking forward to part 2!
Will you also take a look at Heroine's Quest?
Jolfgard not enough people know about this game or their other game a tale of two kingdoms. It would be nice if someone brought attention to those games.
Quest for Infamy is also a great recent tribute to QfG.
By the way, I am surprised she did not mention the VGA version of QfG 1 (or maybe I missed it...). EDIT: I see she mentions it at the very end.
Finally doing Quest for Glory! I grew up playing these with my dad. 4 was by far my favourite. Looking forward to this retrospective.
Great work, I really appreciate it. Sorry for not commenting more often, but be sure that I enjoy every single video you make. Thx and bye!
Wow! Your video review is superb. Great editing, recording is top notch! Cheers!
Well done PushingUpRoses! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the game!
I love this game :) I play this every year without fail. Looking forward to the next vid. Trial by Fire is my fave Sierra game... and so with the Kattas and Abdulla doo, we bid the valley a fond adieu :D
Great retrospective so far, looking forward to part two
That's the thing that console games never seemed to capture properly was the level of tongue firmly planted in cheek humor that most if not all PC adventure games had.
Interesting to see, thank for covering this.
So glad they included Baba Yaga's iconic house.
Cool lipstick.
I am looking forward to the second part. Thanks for this video.
I'm getting flashbacks to Paw's King's Quest retrospective. God, I miss his content.
paw was great. i miss him, too :(
I beat this series for the very first time last year. Played the originals. I'm now going to go through them again with the official remake of 1 and the fan remake of 2. Also my favorite characters in the series are actually Shema and Shameen, the Katta innkeepers. It's just that you get to know them so well over the two games you stay with them, it's hard NOT to think of them as friends and be sad when you stop staying at their inn.
