I think the reason you had so much trouble with the microscope puzzle is because of how the game is coded. The AI is programmed to think ahead for a certain period of time based on your computer's clock speed. This wasn't so bad when clock speeds were a few dozen Megahertz, but most computers nowadays clock at 50 times that rate. The computer can not only pick the best move, but also plan out pretty much the whole game from move 1. The Blood and Honey puzzle in the sequel is the same way. I know they fixed this for the mobile ports, but I don't know of this was ever addressed for the PC digital re-release.
+ForeverUnforgiving I heard about this, but could not find a good source that explained it, so I omitted it. Though, I remember having a hard time on the original hardware as well as new systems, so while it may be less impossible previously, it's still hard as fuck. But as stated, I am terrible at these type of puzzles regardless.
+Psytress “Gangnam” C-op-cake I have no doubt there's plausibility, but without a source, I couldn't really mention it. It's totally cool to discuss it in the comments, but when people put something in a video that can't be backed up in some official way, people like to crucify them for it. I probably could have put it in as a theory, but commentors also like to nitpick that as well. ;)
+Psytress “Gangnam” C-op-cake I don't know if I was just not looking in the right place or not, but if anyone can find a citation, I would LOVE to have it for future videos!
When I was a kid, I was absolutely terrified of this game, way too young to appreciate how cheesy it was. I think maybe The 7th Guest played a role in my fondness for good bad movies. Such a classic.
Me and a friend of mine constantly quote one part from the game, where a clown offers a red balloon. "Like a balloon, sonny?" *demonic voice* "RED BALLOOOOOOON?"
I love how much effort you put into your reviews with all the background info on the game itself and the incredible makeup. All your hard work shows a lot so you should be really proud of your work!
I remember playing this on my brother's computer years ago, I loved it, sure it was a little scary for a 7 year old but it was pretty awesome, I also remember that you got all sorts of screams and such when you put the disk in a CD player. (I used it to scare my middle brother at night sometimes).
The 7th guest is one of the few that I hold fond memories of. My father and I played this together so many times. The movement cut scenes are very much a product of early cd tech. It doesn't age well but I adore it
Almost surprised you didn't mention the non-MIDI song they had with the CD copy... "The Game!" It was really the main theme with electric guitars and vocals, but it was catchy. At least, for a kid.
The characters motivations and backstory are actually talked about in the Prima Players Guide. There's even the Original Script for the game, and a developer interview.
This was one games I had a great connection with because my dad love this game. The puzzles I hated but he loved. Roughly the art for the game being what attached me to it. I still have the art that came with the disc. Even though I never really enjoyed the game. One of those odd games that left an imprint since this mix of oddities is my jam. Thank you for reminding me of that.
YES! This is like one of my favorite games. The bad acting, the creepy atmosphere, the puzzles that make me wanna blow my brains out, all of it! I definitely get where you're coming from with the logic puzzles, because some of them are obscenely hard. I don't know if the Soup Can Puzzle can even be solved without gamefaqs. I only solved that one in the pre-internet days because I looked up the solution in a GamePro magazine. The bishops puzzle is ridiculous, the microscope puzzle is borderline impossible because the AI is based on the processing speed of your computer, and I really hate the bathroom floor puzzle with the knights.
The microscope puzzle was particularly evil if the rumours are to be believed. Supposedly the AI had a set amount of time to plan it's move, which meant that the higher your CPU clock speed, the more possibilities it could run through in that time. Fine on a 486, but unleash it on a modern CPU and it'll play a perfect game. Managed to beat the puzzle on ScummVM, but I don't know how much they limit it there. I also found a 7th Guest book when I was younger - it had a walkthrough, a novelization of the story and given the bastard size of the thing, you could probably knock someone out with it. I really hope I still have it somewhere. Final note; that mouth makeup is amazing. Awesome work all round.
+IkiFoo I wanted to mention this in my review, but as fair as I know this information is speculation (or like you said, a rumor), and I honestly could not find a legit source to verify this so I omitted it. Though, I do think it's plausible for sure.
Understandable; plus, I can't think of a concise enough way to explain it. Short of the original devs, I would probably ask whoever worked on implementing support for The 7th Guest into ScummVM - that had to have come up during their work, surely.
+PushingUpRoses Its true, but its 386 that is beatable, 486 is neigh impossible, and it was patched out in later releases. Its also why its the only puzzle in the game not required to beat.
I seem to remember reading that the "ghost" effect on the FMV actors was actually unintentional and the story was rewritten such that it made thematic sense when they realized they couldn't fix it, instead of the other way around. Also, it should be noted that, when Stauf interrupts you during a puzzle, the game stops accepting input until he's finished talking. The game actually pauses itself so that it can more effectively annoy you.
I just can't get over how FRIKKIN COOL your makeup is!! OMG! You're really talented! And thanks for another awesome review! I love the concept of this game as well :D
That picture with the hands coming out of it always fascinated me when I played this as a kid. My favorite part of this game, though? The mouse icons. Seriously, I wish I had that gesturing skele-hand just for my normal desktop cursor. I have to admit, most of the logic puzzles were over my head as a kid, but I really enjoyed playing this when I went back to it more recently (relatively speaking, this was still several years ago). But I actually like these kinds of puzzles.
I had this on CD-I as a kid (Im sure it was all on one disc too). Loved it but never could complete it. I got stuck in the basement and attic. Scared the crap out of me too. Very atmospheric and haunting.
i played this when it first came out. the slow panning was necessary because of how slow computers were. i really enjoyed it and played it again a year or so ago. but i also love logic puzzles. the sequel, 11th hour, was not quite on par with the original. it was AMAZING when it came out. this was coming after things like Wolfenstein 3d and the like.
As a wee child in the 90s this absolutely scared the shit out of me. Looks like I'm downloading it from steam to see why I was a big whimp. I had an orginal copy and my parents got rid of it. Rats. Oh and 11th hour too. I loved nancy drew since day one so I'm all about logic puzzles.
Awesome makeup! 7th Guest was a great game, I played it as a kid and I still have my copy that I got years ago from Best Buy. Trilobyte is long gone though. No more games from them.
I'll admit it, 7th Guest scared my bowels clean when I was little, along with a lot of other stuff. I was a pretty wussy kid. But looking back at it now (along with all the other things that scared me) I just laugh hysterically at it.
It still has atmosphere down. I honestly don't think people give enough credit to atmosphere... THEN AGAIN I find atmosphere to be far more scary than overt scariness.
My mom said the same thing of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad movie from 1958. Said it scared her to death and she looks at it now and it is so silly looking. But, everyone is a product of your era and that was cutting edge special effects for her formative years. They'd never seen anything like those stop-motion minotaurs and skeletons back then. For us, it was pixelated CD-ROM graphics and midi music! :-) (And I guess for my kid it will be high-definition, fully-rendered, AI-driven holographic augmented reality creatures that appear in her room when she puts VR goggles on...)
The dying girls souls got absorbed into the dolls and staff trapped them in the house. If you do the house in the right order, you’ll get the full story, or there is a book also.
You're so cool, Roses. I often pop back in to your old reviews because your voice is so relaxing and you're a really decent and clever person. Much respect Anyway, it's 5am and it has been a long night. Cheers!
FWIW, there's a map in the DOS original, and beating the game opens up "Open House mode", which lets you skip to any room from the map, as well as rewatch most of the cutscenes and replay the puzzles.
I had this game when it came out, two weeks later I bought the guide book LOL. I don’t think I ever finished it or played it much after I got the book. Thanks for the flash back, great make up job btw!
This was the very first game I LPed for my channel. Then when I got better equipment redid for my channel. I also did a commentaryless walkthrough for it. I love your videos PUR
Can't unsee it? I already saw it in a previous use of that clip before you said anything. 😋 I didn't even realize it was meant to be a phone, I only saw the face.
I've always wanted to play this game. I bought it back in the 90's from a yard sale, one of the cd's were corrupt. So I never got to play it. And by the way, that is such sexy awesome awesome makeup. And smoores pop tarts for the win.
Man I STILL love this game! Though I can understand being underwhelmed by it if you're not into logic puzzles! The atmosphere and soundtrack were really great. I remember getting stuck plenty of times in this game. Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure they took out the microscope puzzle in the iPad version due to glitchiness? They even released it as a stand-alone iPad game, which I have, and which is still incredibly difficult (though at least it gives you a 10-point difficulty scale!) One side note about explaining the kids dying with the dolls, the talking dolls in the doll room are the souls of the children that died. In The 11th Hour they flesh it out a bit more by saying the house itself is alive and needs to "feed". Also I still have the novelization of this game, in hardcover. It does NOT do much to help explain what happens in the ending!
This was the first video I ever watched by you, no one else knew about this game so i thought it was so super cool that you did. I only comment now because you recently retweeted me fawning over you so i had to go back and remember just where it was that i started crushing on your awesome everything. i started following you so long before i realized just how much of the perfect dark goth goddess you were. You have an amazing brain, and that would have been enough for me to think you're beautiful, but you also have a face that can make weak men melt and a body that could inspire the tectonic plates to make their own natural pillars. (way to class up a crude joke) And if you do read this comment by any chance of fate, thank you so much for being you. Your videos have been there for me times when ive been very alone, and your murder she wrote and golden girls episodes brought me and one of my best friends close enough to realize we were best friends. Thank you, I love you (in a safe, distant, you cant hurt me way)
Puzzle games like these are best played with other people. I grew up with mystery adventure puzzle games and they were always played with family. In fact, we make it a family night every week where we play until 4 am and have curry. That way we can talk, we work together to complete the puzzles and we like to discuss who the bad guy will turn out to be While I'm at university and my brother is at a completely different university, we use a screenshare software and talk to each-other through what'sapp's call feature. I find it very pleasant. They're great for bonding
I grew up on a lot of these old school Sierra games myself, both the typing along with point and click. But did you ever play Simon the sorcerer or Legend of Kyrandia?
The microscope puzzle is essentially unbeatable on a modern CPU as it's think cycles are tied to you CPU speed, thus is never makes mistakes through lack of foresight. We implemented a similar puzzle during development of The 13th Doll back in the alpha phase, and we had to deliberately hamper the AI to force it to make mistakes, otherwise it would just foresee every possible move you could make. Whether or not the puzzle made it into the final game, you will have to wait and see :D
Great review. I used to love this game as a kid. Played it loads with my best mate who's dad had a PC with CD drive ;) It is a bit slow compared to games these days, but go into it as a puzzle game and it's still very playable. Got to love the music!!!
Those contacts are the coolest shit, literally. Funnily enough, I remember playing this in the computer lab in primary school, this was in like...2000 though. I hated it, mostly because I'd never seen an FMV style game before & because It was literally like 2000 & thus it didn't seem that impressive. Feel like I didn't miss much.
your make up never ceases to amaze us :D I can never beat the 7th guest as a kid even the 24th hour... well i was a kid who shouldn't be playing those games in the first place.
This game scared the heck out of me when I was a kid - and I didn't even play it! (Because Dad couldn't get it to work despite rebuilding the computer). I just read the gameplay guide that came with it, and that was enough.
I got this game as a teen a few years after it came out and it really helped me learning English, along with Legend of Kyrandia Book 2. About the story, there is actually a novel (titled surprisingly ;) "The 7th Guest") that retells the story and fills in many of the blanks. It's not too long and an interesting read, as it gives much more information about the backgrounds of the characters and what the hell is going on. :)
5:20 omg so glad you pointed out the phone cuz I saw it in the clip earlier and was like... "wait you're not gonna mention the weird lil gumby back there??" XD
Loved this game, and still do. Then again, I love logic puzzles. I was actually working in Southern Oregon around this time and would run into Graeme from time to time. I was still an Amiga fan (tho I also had a PC by then) and he and I chatted about that briefly a couple of times. He has said he was working on a game in Jacksonville. To be honest, I can't remember if he had already done 7th Guest and was working on 11th Hour, or if he was working on 7th Guest. It was actually a bit until I could play it. Needed to wait till I got that 2X CD ROM. ;-) Great guy and great game. IMHO
I had just finished reading Stephen Kings IT as well as seeing the miniseries on telly at the time I played this, and that damn clown going "Do you want a balloooon?" scared me to death. Also gave up at the green-blue blobs puzzle. Everything else I could brute force at least, and I think my dad got one of those "Keys to the Kingdoms" walkthrough books that were sold before the internet came along. I was very proud I got the cake pieces in the kitchen and the telescope in the lounge all by my self.
I know they fixed this for the mobile ports, but I don't know of this was ever addressed for the PC digital re-release.
It wasn't. Basically need an old computer emulator running on your new computer to have a chance.
+PushingUpRoses If you use an old computer emulator, you'll see that they do act.. less experienced at it, which backs up the theory strongly.
+Psytress “Gangnam” C-op-cake I have no doubt there's plausibility, but without a source, I couldn't really mention it. It's totally cool to discuss it in the comments, but when people put something in a video that can't be backed up in some official way, people like to crucify them for it. +Psytress “Gangnam” C-op-cake I don't know if I was just not looking in the right place or not, but if anyone can find a citation, I would LOVE to have it for future videos!
"feeling loooOOOOoooonely?"
"yes"
"well I'll keep you company"
me, relieved, "Thanks"
Cody Meng still remember that labyrinth and the voice saying feeling looooonely.... wow its been like 20 years or more !
This video started when I was in a different tab, and I switched to it and her spooky appearance actually made me flinch. Good job.
Logic puzzles are one thing, fricking reversi with Chess pieces is one of the ones accurately described as torture.
Don't take all knight
When I was a kid, I was absolutely terrified of this game, way too young to appreciate how cheesy it was. I think maybe The 7th Guest played a role in my fondness for good bad movies. Such a classic.
Me and a friend of mine constantly quote one part from the game, where a clown offers a red balloon.
"Like a balloon, sonny?" *demonic voice* "RED BALLOOOOOOON?"
Oh boy, the "red balloon" bit freaked me out as a kid. It's a lot easier now, of course, but young impressionable minds are another story!
They float....
Oh my god, the phone. I remember that darn thing now.
Wowzers! Your makeup is actually pretty fricken' good!
Yeah, those white contact lenses really seal the deal!
please don't say "wowzers"
oh is that so
I love how much effort you put into your reviews with all the background info on the game itself and the incredible makeup. All your hard work shows a lot so you should be really proud of your work!

Those hands in the painting scared the crap outta me as a kid!
Hi past me, I'm future you. It still scares me to this day!
The 7th guest is one of the few that I hold fond memories of. My father and I played this together so many times. The movement cut scenes are very much a product of early cd tech. It doesn't age well but I adore it

not gonna lie, when the video loaded, my immediate reaction was one of "BAH!" (slight jump)
I would definitely watch some one playing through this game.
The characters motivations and backstory are actually talked about in the Prima Players Guide. There's even the Original Script for the game, and a developer interview.
Who doesn't like bongos?

Have you reviewed the 11th hour? I remember being able to finish that with a walk through. Think it's the sequel
The microscope puzzle was particularly evil if the rumours are to be believed. While you wouldn’t be the first heavily-tattooed, sunken-eyed, bloodied spastic to offer me company, Roses, you would certainly be the best.
The music from Tiny Toons on Genesis playing in the background really puts this video over the top for me
I'm sure the Joker would approve of that lovely smile!
I always thought a “Whatchamacallit” bar was the closest thing to a Scrumdidlilyumptious.
You earned my sub with that one subtle Metallica reference. Your vids are awesome!
I remember my mom playing this game when I was little. It all seemed so amazing back then.
I...LOVED this game!!!! AND I was unbelievably stoked that I could get it on my iPad a couple years ago!! It was a huge nostalgia trip for me.
All I need is you talking about adventure games
I swear when I was 8 I watched Clue with my BFF ALL THE FUDGING TIME!
I loved that fucking game on the old Hewlett-Packard growing up. Then came the Eleventh Hour.
I had this on CD-I as a kid (Im sure it was all on one disc too). Loved it but never could complete it. I got stuck in the basement and attic. Scared the crap out of me too. Very atmospheric and haunting.

Awesome makeup! 7th Guest was a great game, I played it as a kid and I still have my copy that I got years ago from Best Buy. Trilobyte is long gone though. No more games from them.
motion capture cutscenes and actors?! The graphics are amazing!
No seriously, as a kid this would have blown my mind!
Thanks for keeping me company. Good makeup effects
*Starts up video* AH WHAT THE H.P. LOVECRAFT
I'll admit it, 7th Guest scared my bowels clean when I was little, along with a lot of other stuff. I was a pretty wussy kid. But looking back at it now (along with all the other things that scared me) I just laugh hysterically at it.
Don't feel bad about it. Young me was scared by the first Maniac Mansion. ;)
I was convinced that this game was EVIL when I was a kid!
Sarah looks more beautiful than ever.
I just found the novel at goodwill! I am so excited!!
The dying girls souls got absorbed into the dolls and staff trapped them in the house. If you do the house in the right order, you’ll get the full story, or there is a book also.

Memories. I played this when I was a kid. Only briefly though because I'd get stuck on the puzzles and it drove me flippin nuts. PS, love the makeup
2 spooky 4 me :(
Been making my way through your horror videos and I love it when you do these makeups
I remember watching the hour-long infomercials for Philips CD-i just to watch scenes from this game. I never did end up playing it.
Love the necklace and earrings
FWIW, there's a map in the DOS original, and beating the game opens up "Open House mode", which lets you skip to any room from the map, as well as rewatch most of the cutscenes and replay the puzzles.

One of my favorites as a kiddo.
This was the very first game I LPed for my channel. Then when I got better equipment redid for my channel. I also did a commentaryless walkthrough for it. I love your videos PUR
I loved it!!!!!!!!! I had it as a kid. I LOVED THIS GAME. One of the FEW games I've totally completed.
you are great!
This is great! I haven't played this game in many years. Thank you!
Can't unsee it? I already saw it in a previous use of that clip before you said anything. 😋 I didn't even realize it was meant to be a phone, I only saw the face.
It's cool to see you and Clint review the same game. 2 great perspectives!
I'mma rewatch his now too, haha
Can't wait to see your impressions on "In the Dead of Night!" It looks like an old-school FMV Adventure Game with Ghosts and serial killers in it!
I've always wanted to play this game. I bought it back in the 90's from a yard sale, one of the cd's were corrupt. So I never got to play it. And by the way, that is such sexy awesome awesome makeup. And smoores pop tarts for the win.
I loved this game when it came out in '93.
This still creeps me out lol. Great job roses!
Your makeup skills always blow my mind.
This game blew my mind when I saw it as a kid.
Man I STILL love this game! Though I can understand being underwhelmed by it if you're not into logic puzzles! The atmosphere and soundtrack were really great. Well the game was amazing when it came out in the mid 90s. And a way to show off your multimedia setup!
tiny toon soundtrack!
loved that game!
Solving spooky 90's PC logic puzzles with s'more Pop-Tarts sounds like heaven to me.
That makeup is AWESOME
sometime the memory be just it.. memory... ;-) loved the review and the game! thank you!
The cosplay was worthy of all the thumbs up.
This was the first video I ever watched by you, no one else knew about this game so i thought it was so super cool that you did. They're great for bonding
Yay I'm not the only one to see the creature phone XD Thought I was just going crazy solving some of those puzzles...
I grew up on a lot of these old school Sierra games myself, both the typing along with point and click. But did you ever play Simon the sorcerer or Legend of Kyrandia?
It's been a long time ago since i played it. And yes: The phone in the kitchen always looked like a creature to me.
This girl has such a nice voice/accent.
The game, after coming back to it after like 19 years gave me a "haunting of hell house" vibe
Yas I was hoping you'd have a vid on this!
Great review. I used to love this game as a kid. Played it loads with my best mate who's dad had a PC with CD drive ;)
It is a bit slow compared to games these days, but go into it as a puzzle game and it's still very playable.
Got to love the music!!!
I believe the line is "...Nomad, vagabond, call me what you will..."
The microscope puzzle... That was an absolute nightmare!
Your makeup, I want it! Also that Necklace!
But anyways, great channel and good review, great hidden gem of review channels
Those contacts are the coolest shit, literally.
Funnily enough, I remember playing this in the computer lab in primary school, this was in like...2000 though. I hated it, mostly because I'd never seen an FMV style game before & because It was literally like 2000 & thus it didn't seem that impressive. Feel like I didn't miss much.
You were here eerily beautiful
your make up never ceases to amaze us :D
I can never beat the 7th guest as a kid even the 24th hour... well i was a kid who shouldn't be playing those games in the first place.
This game scared the heck out of me when I was a kid - and I didn't even play it! (Because Dad couldn't get it to work despite rebuilding the computer). I just read the gameplay guide that came with it, and that was enough.
i remember having the novelisation of this when i was a teen
Yo I just came here from 2024, and ho-lee shit your makeup is shocking and awesome!
There's an VR headset version of this now. I had no idea it was actually a remake.
5:20 omg so glad you pointed out the phone cuz I saw it in the clip earlier and was like... "wait you're not gonna mention the weird lil gumby back there??" XD
"Nomad, Vagabond, call him what you want." I understood that reference. Lol
Love your spooky make up in this video. Great review too!
Spot on video btw.
