There is a difference. Anyone holding public office puts their family as well as their self a target of violence. If we do not make it an example of it, we might not have a government. It is common sense that closed minded people cannot see.

he was trying to kill the speaker of the us house of representative, the third highest ranking official in the united states...when someone attacks an elected official, that person is attacking all the people who voted for her and what she represents so the crime is greater...we the people have to send a clear message that committing a crime against public official is different, like police, judges, politicians

Of course murderers may get a lighter sentence, however if they show any mercy this may set a precedent and open the door for more attacks on our elected officials. There were some incidents against our supreme court justices, such as Justice Kavvanaugh, where his address was published an attackers were caught before anyone was hurt, but I never heard of anyone getting any prison time. Sorry for this man, he will do time in the worst prison system in the country.
