For the first time I have come to terms with building rigs in just a simple 5mins video tutorial. Thanks Julien for making this possible. But like Oliver Twist I'm asking for more; I want to see future videos on addi a follow focus and matte box.
See, this is the kind of rig and set up with great adjustable parts to add more that I need....plus its a great, straight to the point video. Thank you so much...its about time.
Note to future rig/setups: When using Amazon for products, amazon now allows you to create public lists for the community to look through. You will see it when you are creating a Wishlist. Thanks for the video. Calm and clear.
I’m confused, that half cage only has 10 holes on top on small rig and this has 12. I’ve been trying to find that top plate everywhere and couldn’t find
Thank you. How did you connect your dummy battery of your camera to V mount battery? I saw you used the Dtap to connect your monitor. Thanks again. I like your rig!
Will this type of cage work with sony camera with a battery grip? I don't really like the idea of a dummy battery stuff, I just doubled my battery life by a battery grip and it's quite enough for me but I wonder if I can make my rig more sterdier. Sometimes I get concirned about my grip when holding a heavy lens with a tripod.
Awesome video. Very motivative. Thank you so much. Just a request sir. The items of the rig are unavailable now on Amazon. Can you please update the price of each item? Please sir.
Thank you for this helpful video! Please could you recommend an affordable Follow Focus for such rig with 2:1 gear ratio? I'm not sure if Smallrig 3010 has 2:1 gear ratio. At least they don't provide such info. I will start to build my rig on the upcoming week when I receive some rig components I ordered. I see you installed your monitor behind the top handle. Does this mean you mostly keeping this rig much below the face? In my case I'm going to attach side handles in order to hold the rig at my face height. In this case monitor should be fully visible. I'm thinking to attach it to the left or right side of the top handle or on top of it. Thanks in advance!
when you shoot rigged, you kinda end up shooting from the hip more, I never really shoot through the EVF anymore now i'm running rigged, being able to see the focus on the 5" screen is too good- my rig is similar to this, but instead of a top handle i have. a second side handle, that way I can still adjust camera parameters and use my thumb on the joystick to control focus (a7iii)
hey, nice setup! so you got your monitor powered by the d-tap of the battery and the camera powered by the power output of the monitor via the dummy battery, right? if you configure the monitor to switch on automatically when the camera will be switched on or a hdmi signal is present, does this work with this configuration? or does the camera only get power when the monitor is already switched on?
Hello, please tell me...when using a dummy battery (DTap) for the camera does the camera battery compartment close (due to the wire from the dummy battery)? Thanks
I am an haitian. I do not speack english very well, but I understand very well your video. Thanks a lot for this video . I have a canon 70D, now I know how i can use a V-mount battery.
I rarely say money is better spent upgrading a body - but in this case I'd have to argue taking the total cost of this and buying a new camera would be a much better choice.
I copied this rig for my a6500 and it works great! I did add an arca Swiss quick release between the cage and camera so I’m able to take it off without disassembling the whole thing, that takes care of most of the extra space. I also don’t attach the cold shoe adapter up top, I just tighten the rod screw and the top cheese plate stay in place. Everything is still really solid. I also used the nato rail handle and monitor mount for faster disassembly. Everything sets up and breaks down on seconds.
How long you can run your cam and monitor with this battery? Exactly looking for this kind of setup just I will go for a bit more robbust rig for my. Gh5 and Ninja V with Tilta Nucleus M. I would like to know how long i can run all gear because I really don wanna to change evry hour changing battery on everythings
@@zoltanelias I used this exact setup for an 8 hour long wedding day and returned the battery at 48%. It powered the monitor and the camera. So we are talking 16-20+ hours depending on your battery choice.
Do you ever run into the “battery exhausted” message on A7sii with dummy battery. I get it using it with my SmallHD Focus and the camera shuts down. The camera see it as regular battery and thinks it dead. I end up having to use a usb battery pack to get around that.
@@julienajarry Both are SmallHD products. it works but after the camera runs the battery percent down that when it happens. I'll reach out to them. Thanks!
I tend to get the “internal temp too high allow it to cool” message even when im not shooting in a heat sensitive environment and I dnt shoot in 4k. Any ideas?
Hi. I have designed some 3D printed cinematic focus rings for DSLR and other camera lense. They are precisely made for each lens, so you can always keep them on your lense just like original cinematic lenses. Would you like to try some in your projects? Your feedbacks will help me a lot.
If you don't mind me saying, the black background and subdued lighting are making it difficult to see what you are doing, otherwise, great video, thanks.
Julien...Awesome video Brother. Thanks for the inspiration...thanks for sharing what you have learned. You Rock!! #SniperEye ...I'll post my final setup.
Good video, I like the rig design, but the lighting is barely watchable because you can't see the parts and pieces! Light is your friend when you want people to be able to see things lol
Your rig is impossible. You can’t see the lcd screen. You can’t see the monitor. Except both from narrow angles. It’s a good video though except for black background.
I feel so good watching at these rig videos for no reason
yay!
Me too
Same!

This is the best video I have ever seen about rigging a camera, thank you so much, you even give the list of all the components. Really helpful!

Nice! I've never seen anyone do a rig/cage break down like this! Very cool!
thank you!
I think the camera cage layout is great. l'm going to critique the video though because you shot a black camera on a black background.
PJ Jackson yeah made it hard to make out details
I’m confused, that half cage only has 10 holes on top on small rig and this has 12. I’ve been trying to find that top plate everywhere and couldn’t find
This actually helped me a lot. I think thats the type of rig I’d like with the additional follow focus, rode mic, and matte box.
glad I could help!
Where does the dummy Battery plug into? Into the vmount battery? Do you need an adapter
Nice video ! How do you connect the camera + the monitor on one battery ? I didn't understand this part. Thank you !
thanks. that part comes with the smallhd focus per the description.
@@julienajarry Thks !

thank you! power to camera comes from the smallhd focus. npf dummy to dtap to power the monitor.
If I need to move just the camera from the cage onto a gimbal, I'd attach an Arca Swiss QRP to the base plate.
Thanks a million for making this video, Im getting started on RUclips and I have been looking for a video just like this one.
thank you!

Hi Julien! im thinking of buying a camera. Im only interested in video. Would you go for the new a7siii or the bmpcc4k?
Can you connect the dtap directly to the dummy battery? And will the dummy battery convert the 12v to a 7volt for the camera?

How did you add the dummy battery for the a7iii? Tha vmount battery only has a usb port and dtap port?
Is this cage compatible with BMPCC4K? Thanks!
I was looking to see what monitor you are using and got to an error page on amazon :(
Beautiful Setup!
Short question: Where is the cable from the camera going? To the monitor or the battery ?
I can’t see it 🤔
there is an hdmi cable going from the camera to the monitor and a dummy battery from the camera to the smallhd focus which can power it.
Looks like a dope setup man, need to check some of this gear out myself
thank you!
Can I use this rig cage set up for my cannon t7 and can
I could see every part clearly in the video with the lighting, idk why everyone is bitching about it lol. Nice rig man. I need to do this to my a6300
Do you think this cage is work for a6500 or a6300?? Thanks!
Isnt that handle kind of in the way of the monitor when shooting? Looks good for waist shots but..
Eirik Skarstein you can put in on a nato rail if you want. It’s not in the way all that much.

What would you recommend if I wanted to add a shotgun mic? Any room for a cold shoe mount?
Adam Griffith smallrig makes cold shoe mounts you can add anywhere
Thanks!
*Subbed* much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 can I do this to my SL2

they mount the v mount plate per the video.

red rock micro to canon ef. fotodiox to just sony. thank you!
How long can you record continuously of this battery. I need a solution I can run for about 4 hours to a ninja V
you have plenty of battery to charge for 4 hours :)
you should make a video like this for the lumix s1
an S1 can fit right in this setup. no need for a new video. (thumbs up)

Ok guys, I really need the music here. It got some mirror's edge vibes to it.
You could add a b-cam to your rig with a lens shoe adapter for action cameras. Search “mounte” on amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B07L7H9KKX
how about audio?
anything you want. I'd add a cold shoe mount and a Sennheiser mke 400 to start.

It's interesting how bare bones your rig is, you get it done with no matte box, just one handle and no shoulder mount. Defintely more practical
for this yes. I do have an fS7 and Red where those things are more practical.
1000 dollar setup
Just bought all the items from ebay for a total of 400 dollars, just went with a cheaper chinese lcd and a smaller battery
didnt knew such dummie batteries excisted... thank you... cool video btw
you're so welcome
Stop cutting every half a second. It makes me dizzy
Or just buy a Cinema camera.
If you have 50 grand.

Also that is waay too overdone
