Turning my Sony a7s into a CINEMA Camera!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 июл 2024
- I take my little Sony a7s and build it out into a full cinema camera similar to what a RED cinema camera has in features. Of course the dynamic range, image quality and RAW capabilities don't even compare on the a7s vs RED, but there are a lot of power, ergonomic and focus features you can add to a DSLR or mirrorless camera to make it more usable for films. Hopefully this full camera rig buildout gives you some ideas about how you can make your own camera rig even better. This doesn't only apply to the a7s, you can use you own camera and cage and add a lot of these features and tools to your setup.

Is the camera included in your Rig Build-Out Cost?
JS Global Media yes!
I’m really interested in this rig setup for my Sony A7R3, can you provide links to all parts & accessories please this rig looks perfect for my needs
JS Global Media check out all of the links in the description! Most of the parts needed are listed there. You’ll of course need a different cage for the A7RIII. Good luck with your rig build!

Nikhil Patel 😂😂😂 pretty much! Anytime I watch the BTS on those ads, the iPhone is massively rigged out and on a million dollar crane and dolly. Lol

@@studioryan9577 I don't doubt that! I'm sure they use pro level cinema cams for all of their ads. I have seen some BTS of the "Shot on iPhone" ads though where they had fully rigged out an iphone.

As a 15 year ENG vet and audio Sup, I’m curious as to how front heavy that rig is. In a lot of gigs, you are “shouldered up” for 10+ hours. You will have a time code box and an IFB (for sound reference) stacked next to your Anton Bauer/Vmount. The speed rails need to be longer, to offset the weight, if you are shoulder mounting for more than a few hours. Otherwise, your forearms will burn.
And you never mention bongo ties. Cable management is everything on DSLR rigs. Keep it tight or you will snag.
Just discovered the channel and was looking into old uploads and noticed how much you grew as a host and info giver. The confidence boost in your persona and even your appearance changed, and seems to be result of a good development as professional and that you really kept humble in what info you giving out. I almost never comment on YT, but been enjoying your videos so much and found them super useful. Keep the good job man.
syckeee hey thanks so much! I really appreciate it. Welcome to the channel. I definitely have some more awkward older vids, it’s taken a lot of practice to get better and I’m still working on it. I definitely like being behind the camera much better. 😂
These cages for these small cameras look badass even though it kind of defeats the point of a smaller camera but I feel like when I assemble my own cage it’s gonna give me the same satisfaction I used to get as a kid attaching bionicle and LEGO pieces and making my own custom character or creature.
Victor - Bluerush1992 haha! Yeah I totally get that. Having it light and small definitely has its advantages, especially when you’re using a gimbal or traveling. However, when you do a lot of client work and bigger shoots, having something fully rigged out with a cage actually helps a ton with workflow.

I appreciate that!!
The stop motion portion was a really cool touch, and I love that you added that into this. Really cool setup! I use to do video, then switched mainly over to photography, but now want to build up a cinema rig again, so this really helps give me some good ideas!
well, photography tends to be a much cheaper hobby/craft to maintain. so you might be better off not rigging out your camera rig again! haha! Thanks for watching--making the stop motion scene was the most fun part of course
Simply the best rig build video I've seen yet.
Thanks bro, keep on keeping on 😎👍
hey thanks! appreciate that a lot. keep rocking!!
WOW!! 4 minutes into the video and the rig has already started to look very good. And sure get that wooden side handle, there is on that has a record button on it. And keep in mind people, this rig can be used with different cameras and looks so much professional arriving on set with this than with a mirrorless cam. Just imagine arriving on set with a a6500 vs this rig. The only thing missing from this rig would be a microphone.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Yeah, I've been looking into the Tilta wooden handle with the record button, its $230 though, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. And yes, going on set with this is much better looking and performing than a stripped down a6500. I don't usually put a mic on it actually cause I'm frequently syncing audio to a boom mic.
Well this was absolutely effing epic!!! So great to methodically walk through each compoent.
thanks!
Thank you for this! Watched your V Mount Battery Video and was convinced to purchase. This not only shows your whole rig, but also the dtap setup for all your devices
b.winfilm that’s awesome! Yeah, this is a more detailed breakdown of the whole rig. Hopefully your v-Mount setup works well for you!
Fantastic video! So satisfying to watch different components fitting just in place and things building up so beautifully.
PS: Actually, it's OK to take your eyes off of the camera that's shooting while picking up stuff from the table.
hey thanks! hope it helps with your own rig build. And okay, thanks for the tip! haha filming is always so awkward
I subscribed when I saw that stop motion sequence. Keep up the great work!
Dallen Pace hey thank you very much! Welcome to the channel. I don’t do stop motion very often, so it was fun to make.
Dallen Taylor Yeah, I did as well. A lot of creators wouldn’t have taken the time but it was exactly the way I wanted to see it come together after watching him assemble it and explain each piece.

Interesting video, thanks. I did this once a few years back to a Canon 1DX body. after I started adding up what I spent on all the Zacuto stuff to make it, I sold it all and bought the Sony FS5. Update....After I saw the Ninja Atmos V, I knew my guess was screwed. Lol. Question for a newbie...Im assuming you do all audio in post with this setup?
is there any solution to control the sony A7s settings without even mess with it
Right now, I don't know of any options that allow you to control the A7s remotely as far as settings go.
Awesome video, been looking at ideas for my A7s, might have to do this
Jay Bolt thanks man! The a7s is still a beast of a camera so I think rigging it out is still a pretty good idea if you’re gonna hang onto it for a while.
So confused how I missed this video. Great info and content my dude.
8:27 That click was SOO satisfying.
😂😂 re-watched it and you're totally right. I love when things lock into place and make a sound.
Looks nice with the Ninja V, but I doubt you're taking much advantage of the Prores422, as the A7s outputs 8-bit only. Difference to internal recorded footage is not tooo big.
davidivjak yeah. This is actually the one case where the Ninja does make a big difference for me. The a7s can only shoot 4k with an external recorder, so I get a lot of use out of it. It does suck that it’s only 8 bit though.
@@chadwin Oh yea, forgot the A7s can't output UHD. Well, in this case it makes sense :)
@@ZeroHunter93 yeah, exactly. The a7sii added internal 4k, so having the Ninja is a need for me right now.

Definitely go for the smallrig wooden handle on the right. I have it now over a year and it is really good.
Ben Mauser okay that’s good to know. I haven’t seen a ton of people using it, I need to get it still!
Im currently a RED user but I started on Sony! I like the form factor of this setup.....and yes I still slap a matte box on the front of the RED lol. Gotta look the part haha!
That’s awesome man! I wish I could afford a RED, just rented them. They have the perfect form factor IMO, so I’ve tried to replicate them with my smaller DSLR’s. And yes, the matte box look is so good and useful
I feel like the only benefit worth justifying the cost is the look and perceived value that client's may feel, but in terms of actually boosting the cameras capabilities.... ehhh
Hud Productions it does make the camera look more professional yes, however it does Not effect the image. What it Does do, is add features I need for bigger productions like wireless follow focus, Wireless video transmission, pro ND filters, and all day battery life. Very useful when it comes to camera capabilities
True, but if you're recording externally (depending on the camera), you do get that little bit extra flexibility due to a better colour space - aside from that, the rest is just convenience on set.
Glad someone said it. You'd be better off investing that kind of money in either quality lenses, or a higher quality camera right from the start.
It's mostly cosmetics, like that oversized, comically looking "lens hood" (honestly, that's just what it is).
And yes, while there are functional pieces, they strike me as so specific that their everyday usability stands in no relation to their cost.
All in all, it looks impressive, without being impressive.
awesome...thank u - great rig and great show u got
Glad you enjoyed it
thanks for sharing, would love to see a video of test footage like your running clip
nice video man but your rig needs a spacer so that the lens sits flush with with the matte box
Depot msa yeah. The 15mm rod base actually has a riser so I can adjust where the lens sits in the matte box, I just have it really low in this video for some reason.

I was awfully disappointed that Small Rig didnt have a wider selection of cages so, I made my own, to be 100% honest, it would've been a better idea to call them and ask them if one could transfer over, instead, my idiot self spent around 70$ on air craft grade aluminium and around 4 prototypes to make one for my D7500. I then milled it out on the CNC mill, I'm a CNC nerd if you didn't pick that up already.
I'm also a partial idiot as the project took me around three months of my personal weekends to get it to go.
That's actually Super cool! If i could do CNC at all, I would definitely be making new parts and pieces all of the time! I'm sure it was a lot of work, but worth it to have something custom. SmallRig does partner with creators though, next time send them your CNC design and a lot of times they'll actually make it.
That price is my entire barber class!
Moises Ayala yeah. It definitely all adds up. I built it over many years though, so it’s been a long game investment.

When you max the civic out in need for sped pro street
D Dl 🤣🤣 truth 🚙
Get rid of that little variable ND, it's cheap glass and effects your image quality and invest in some good glass to put in the matte box so it's not just for looks. Seeing someone with an empty matte box just looks goofy unless you simply don't need a filter at that time. Matte box would also fit better if you drop it down just a touch, the wider glass may show the bottom edge.
Michael Cheser - Natural Visions Media yeah, you’re definitely right. The ND throttle adapter does add a slight color cast and some vignetting sometimes. It’s worked pretty well for me though. I’ve now switched to a new matte box and ND setup though that’s a great fit with high quality glass! ruclips.net/video/f8xtEzeBEnE/видео.html
@@chadwin I think it's definitely a very cool product. There are some new ones in the works at the moment that will obviously cost more but be much better glass almost as if they're built into the camera. If people want to use a matte box I always recommend using filters in the box as it protects the front optic, the filters are much higher quality, and they last a lifetime and can be used with any camera or lens.
Michael Cheser - Natural Visions Media that’s great advice. I usually shoot with a UV filter on my lenses as protection, but a filter in the matte box at all times is a great way to do it too! I’ve definitely seen a big difference in the quality of glass from a 4x4 filter compared to the screw on kind.

People who dismiss matte boxes are the same videographers who throw on crop bars in post after shooting 16:9 the whole time to get the "cinematic" look.
And they're just dumb, because matte boxes can help you a lot on a shoot, plus, FILTERS MAANNNNNNNNN
Bodhi Ouellette yeah. I love using matte boxes to cut down on flares and drop in my ND filters. They’re def necessary on larger more pro shoots.
the only reason people put black bars in post, because they want to use the "end screen" function in youtube. RUclips only support End Screen with videos of aspect ratio in 16:9 only
Zul Norizan very true ☝️☝️ I’ve uploaded videos in widescreen and it won’t allow end screen elements unless it’s 16x9. Pretty lame IMO

@@chadwin what about a shogun for example as external recorder. The HDMI output is pretty much raw afaik, at least it is 4:2:2

Yall cinema people are crazy bro
Brendan Connolly 😂😂
So you have a big ”cinema” camera with 8-bit recording you cannot grade properly? I shoot on Red because of great raw, or on Mirorless because of the portability. With this setup you lose both. What is the point?
That's awesome you're able to shoot on a RED all the time. I've rented it for shoots, but for most people it's not something they can afford to drop 20-50 thousand dollars on! So making a "cinema rig" out of what you have is worth it. It does only have 8-bit but I still love the full frame image out of it.
Man you clearly missed out on a HUGE point that this video is making...
@@chadwin I'm not saying I use RED all the time. I'm just saying I use it when I need real cinematic quality for proper grading. It's quite cheap to rent. For smaller shows, I often use mirrorless because of portability and ease of use. This thing you've made looks great, but It's heavy, not easy to assemble, not portable and despite all that, It still shoots 8-bit that's hell to grade. That's why I see no point, aside from the fact it looks better for clients.
@@brunosavastano1851 That's possible. Tell me..
