I bought one of these and was disappointed in the Battery holders on the unit. One broke the first time I put a battery in it. I then ordered 2 new stronger battery clips. I had to drill holes and do some soldering, but now the batteries won't come off unless I want them off. The unit itself works perfect and even better now that I upgraded the battery clips.
hey caleb!!!as per your advice i got this setup..it works just fine..however i need xtra accessory power cables to power other stuff. the kit only comes with one 12v rated cable and of course the others to power the camera and all that...what is that cable and where can i get it. thanks so much for all what you do
Hey man, I use 1 Sony NP-F970 battery with a Fotga adapter from amazon and get about 2 and a half hours of continuous recording with my BMPCC4k. Likely this setup would give you at least 5! :)
Thanks for the reply Roberto With the C100 of course you have a much longer shooting time but with DSLR the batterie device is fantastic! I bought it in Calebs advice and I´m Thrilled about the shooting time I got with this set-up Kind regards
nice . this unit comes with the canon bat, how do you connect a gh5 bat? i know you can buy the dummy bat for gh5 on ebay, but how do i get it to connect to the plate since the dummy bat comes with a dc connection. also i would use the 12v dc for my atomos inferno, so that only leaves me with the 7.5v output for gh5
What is that blue two prong 7.2 volt cable going to the dummy battery called? I want to get this for the Nikon D7000 but the dummy batteries use a different cord.
Caleb, great videos. Question on the Sony NP-F970. Do you know who manufacturers this, and is there a source in the USA. I can only find vendors in China, and not the actual manufacturer. Thanks for your help. Keep up the great work!
I purchased this battery rig for my Canon initially and it works great. But I have recently purchased the GH4, is there any battery that will allow me to still use this Sony NP-F970 on my GH4? Also big thanks for all the great videos and information.
I hope he sees this and replies. I'd be using this rig on a boat and it seems within reason that the battery could tumble, bounce and do a swan dive into 40ft of water if it were to pop out of that dual battery holder. How much faith do you have in those batteries staying put in that plate?
Would this setup work for a Sony a7s? I'm getting ready to travel through north india and nepal to shoot a documentary. I've heard the a7s eats up battery life.
Hey, I just noticed also that it looks like you have your top handle attached to the hotshoe on your camera. have you had any trouble with doing that? I would have a super hard time trusting that option.
+Nathan James if you notice the top of the plate that you think is mounted on the hot shoe you'll notice and arm section pointing at the guy, there's a 15mm hole that drops down because i believe its mounted on a small cage that actually mounts the camera to the bottom of it.
Hey Caleb, very informative and useful videos. I find myself watching yours over others. I am a big diy type person and want to construct my own battery bank using the two 970 batteries and plates but I'd like to build my own plate that is better made than the Chinese one. Do you know if there are any electronic guts inside the plate? Or is it just the wires from the battery holders to the output jacks? Any electronic boards inside? Thanks for your time. Subscribed
Great setup! Idea: wouldn't it be better to have the batteries facing inwards the camera so you don't accidentally knock them out of the battery holders?
It looks like DIY rig industry has moved away from NPF battery to V mount since latter's price has dropped quite a bit since 2014. Power Junkie adapter is still pretty good for NPF users though.
Bought one of these based on your review and LOVE IT!! Amazing.. powers camera and LCD monitor for hours and hours... I've still yet to run through the batteries on an 11-hour shoot. Related question: What do you use for location shooting to power lights? There never seem to be enough outlets, and running extension cords is cumbersome and not all that safe, even when secured with tape. Do you use any portable power supplies with a/c convertors, or a gas-powered generator off-set, or ???
Probably of no importance to you anymore, but for whoever reads this: Depends on the lights ;) I started with cheap Yongnuo 600LED lights. While they provide quite a bit of light, I'm not a fan of the NP-F style batteries for these as the mount is vulnerable and you need two to power all 600 LEDs (one battery powers 300 LEDs, and the other the remaining 300). While this is great from a power standpoint (instead of depleting one NP-F battery rather quick or even damaging it by trying to power all 600 from one), I just consider it a hassle having a light needing two batteries. I switched to V-mount lights. That way I can just power my lights and my camera with the same battery. On full brightness, the F&V K4000 lights I have can be powered for something like 6 hours or so with about a 170 Wh battery (I recelled my V-mounts, which were former 90 Wh batteries, so the usable capacity is an estimation). But if you need far more light, you either need bigger batteries or batteries with a higher output voltage. The professional AV-industry provides all kinds of solutions these days as LEDs are getting ever more efficient and thus easier to use with mobile power.
Greetings Caleb, great vids as always. I was wondering when you are gonna do some vids about your experience of using the BMPCC you acquired a while back? Keep up the great work.
That battery will work. You can actually use any batter that starts with "NP-F" Sony and other brands have several sizes/capacities, but all the NP-F batteries share the same mount.
Bought this unit and the very first time I put a battery in the battery mount came apart. It has never worked. The 5v cable does not even fit my camcorder. Quality is suspect for the high price. I'm in the process of returning it or receiving a replacement . I expect there to be problems. Will keep you folks informed how I go.
Sent this unit back and received a prompt and full refund by the seller. I cannot recommend this product because of the suspect quality but the seller was completely co-operative with the refund so I can say that he keeps his word.
Hey! Hours watching your videos man, they are great!!! I know you talked about this, but how fragile are those battery mounts? I broke and droppped a battery once from my lilliput monitor, it's almost the same mount it seems. I see it has no locking mechanism, just pressure. Do you secure the batteries with tape or something? Do they resist a minor impact on the rig and don't fly off to the ground? I'm considering buying this... Thank so much!!!
So I recently purchased one of these NP-F to LP battery/power supply units to use with my Canon 70D and it does not power my camera using the dummy LP battery connected to the NP-F power supply's 12-volt port. I was able to power my monitor using either the 5 or 7.5-volt port, (not sure which one as they are not marked). For anyone who has one of these NP-F to LP battery/power supplies is there some sort of setting on my camera I should be using when I want to power my camera with this sort of power supply?
Hey so I don't know if you're still wondering this, but what is probably going on is that the dummy battery is not according to standard. I know there are a LOT of dummy LP-E6 batteries going around that are not according to standard. If you go looking for a good dummy, make sure you get one with the two long metal strips right next to each other and NOT on opposite sides of the battery.
My battery system doesn't ever show full charge. It last only about 4 hours and it sometimes creates a Error 20 mechanical code. Have anyone had similar issues.

Does 15mm mount for NP battery come with D Taps ?
Cant believe this was uploaded 8 years ago... If you do remember did the Canon camera give you a battery reading (how much power is left)? Thanks
is that all comes with all set excluding the camera or you need to buy separately?
Does it matter if I use a 7.4v battery or do I really need to use a 7.2v?
hey caleb!!!as per your advice i got this setup..it works just fine..however i need xtra accessory power cables to power other stuff. the kit only comes with one 12v rated cable and of course the others to power the camera and all that...what is that cable and where can i get it. thanks so much for all what you do
is there an indicator if the battery is low? thanks.
I wonder if this could work with BMPCC 4K
I was wondering the same thing...
Hey man, I use 1 Sony NP-F970 battery with a Fotga adapter from amazon and get about 2 and a half hours of continuous recording with my BMPCC4k. Likely this setup would give you at least 5! :)
Some Velcro to keep the battery from getting off would be cool unless it has a lock on the plate.
Do you know if there's an adapter for the Sony a7s? I already have NP-F970 batteries for my Shogun, so this could be super helpful.
Thanks for the reply Roberto
With the C100 of course you have a much longer shooting time but with DSLR the batterie device is fantastic!
I bought it in Calebs advice and I´m Thrilled about the shooting time I got with this set-up
Kind regards
why not use a v-mount battery brick? more reliable and you can also plug a recorder to the v-mount battery brick
probably because most V-mount batteries are $200-250+
There are super cheap v mount plates and batteries around tough.
I paid $138 for a Fotga V-mount plate, and roughly $200 for a 195Wh V-mount battery w/ charger.
Literally the first couple sentences in the video explain why he's talking about this as an affordable alternative to V-mount batteries.
Wow.
Two large NP-F mount batteries will run ya like $30
nice . this unit comes with the canon bat, how do you connect a gh5 bat? i know you can buy the dummy bat for gh5 on ebay, but how do i get it to connect to the plate since the dummy bat comes with a dc connection. also i would use the 12v dc for my atomos inferno, so that only leaves me with the 7.5v output for gh5
Dont those same batteries power those "cheap" LED lights on Amazon too? Dual purpose! :)
nevermind....typed that before I got to the end of the video lol
dave andrade premature commenting. It happens to the best of us.
I'm actually disappointed in myself :( hey, we all can't be perfect.
The ePhoto LEDs? Yes and no... You can use them directly, but you could get an NP-F to V mount adapter for $50 and you're in business.
Do you get a headphone jack out of that monitor too?
What is that blue two prong 7.2 volt cable going to the dummy battery called? I want to get this for the Nikon D7000 but the dummy batteries use a different cord.
I noticed on ebay that the description doesnt say anything about being able to power a 5D mk3....just a mk2. Think it will work?
Couldn't tell ya. Haven't tried it.
I have a canon 80d. What do I need as far as cables and dummy battery system?
WHAT IS THE BATTERY MARK YOU CONNECT TO THE DEVICE? THE BRAND AND CHARACTERISTICS DOES IT WORK FOR CANON 6D?

Caleb, is there any update to this kind of device?

Old video but do I still have to plug in a battery to the camera even if im using a cord to charge it?

its easier to use a anker 26,800 mah battery bank and charge the camera trough a usb cable, it will last forever, very useful on a trip
anker PowerCore 26800
Is this for Canon only (reference to the cable)
what length rods do you use? is there enough room left for a follow focus?
Can it be able to power my Canon EOS M50 with same rig that you did and also my Canon EOS 80D?
Hey I have the lumix G7 and wanted to use this setup but can't get the dummy battery to fit anything to the plate, need help!!
Hey Caleb would you still recommend this to buy even for this year?
the mid size NPs work fine I think and take the stress off.

Hey Caleb...great channel man. Can you use this battery to power the tascam 60D interface?
I'm not well educated in power conversions, but you could probably do it with the right cable. I don't have the Tascam to test it with though...
ok. thanks for the response.
Great setup! Idea: wouldn't it be better to have the batteries facing inwards the camera so you don't accidentally knock them out of the battery holders?
I should try that. The batteries stay in very well, but you would gain a little room for the cables if it was switched around.

Do you secure the batteries with tape or something? Do they resist a minor impact on the rig and don't fly off to the ground? I'm considering buying this... Thank so much!!!
The mounts are holding the batteries fine. No issues on that front for me.
***** Great, thanks for your reply man! :)
Juan Ledo Sorry man one more important question... does the camera say how much battery is left? Or is it another way to know? Thanks again!
Locking depends on the equipment. I have lights that do lock the batteries in place, and some that don't. Guess it all comes down to cost.
