It's pretty obvious to me. High K rate, solid WHIP, pitched competitively in a major market with intense scrutiny. The only real downside is HRs allowed, which I'm guessing other teams think they can mitigate.
@redseatradio Pivetta had improved his xERA from 4.65 to 3.98 to 3.51 since '22. His 6-12 record in '24 and some maddening intervening periods of inconsistency hid how well he's actually pitched. I don't agree w/fans' near universal "glad he's gone" response.
I'm always willing to point out when I'm wrong Breslow obviously knows what he's doing. Breslow looks like a genius and now they can sign a player with a qo without really losing anything. I'm hopeful for more good moves in the coming days 🤞
This is a very good step in the right direction for the Red Sox Hot Stove Season. Gives me hope that the front office is not liking the direction the team was going in.
Dobbins could be a Rick Procello. Garcia is also a right handed bat. You could see him up at some point this year. Especially, if Anthony and Campbell are not added yet and they have a player who is going to be out for a week or 2, Placers on the 40 man roster are not eligible for the rule 5 draft. The rest of the players on the list get moved to next years rule 5 list if they are not taken this year. I like Mata but I do not know if he would have made the team. It has been quite a long time since he pitched. I hope Mata goes to AAA and pitches there next year. If he is healthy being not on 40 man makes him more valuable .If he is not picked up by someone, he does not have to be added to the 40 man to the end of the season. I think after that he is a free agent.
Great video Corbin! Hopefully I’m able to make it tonight to the stream one question though, where do the Sox go from here? After fried or snell or do we do the super team with Soto and Vladdy
Great question I think that depends on how those specific markets play out. Are they going to have to overspend on a pitcher to get them here? Well then maybe the next step is a pivot or vis versa
Ya got 40 spots, and to put your team in the best position for today and tomorrow, sometimes ya gotta let go of yesterday and move on from someone you'd rather keep. I'm good with all these moves. Nice analysis, as usual, Corbin. Thanks.
Great video Corbin ! I would have also rolled the dice on Pivetta. I was fairly sure he would be looking for more than a year . I knew we would have a second round pick coming back and I love that deal ! Pivetta at times had some really good stuff but was not as consistent as I would have liked. Maybe we can draft a young pitcher with that pick . That being said I think Pivetta is quite the competitor and I will miss having him on the team. I do think it was a good move for the future of the team. Its time for this team to go after Fried or Burnes. We need an ace and some bullpen help. I think we should sign another above average started as well. Pitching is the game.
Dobbins was a no brainer and Mata actually is probably pretty safe because he was on the 40 and the IL all year so I don't think anyone will risk a 26-man spot for that but we will see
@@redseatradio I think he will likely stay with us but if anything a trade where he could be put on a 40-man and not a 26-man meaning not a Rule 5 pick
I don’t know why fans got nervous about Pivetta accepting his QA. He does have stuff, is not 37 yrs old and will get multiple offers from contending teams looking to sure up the back of their rotations. He will have a great season, if he lands in the right spot. Then, it’ll be the same revisionist Chris Sale fans, freaking out about how big ‘o fans they were of Pivetta. As far Jhostynxon, you’re dead on. They needed to make the move. He was never going to make it through the rule #5 draft. He’s a perfect trade chip. I actually really like him but they have so much corner outfield depth. He makes so much sense for a team like the White Sox. He’s the type of prospect I’d want if I was in their position. I mean, I’d definitely be asking for Anthony, Campell , Teel etc. But Breslow has almost certainly made Chicago aware of who’s on and off the table by now. I think Crochet to Boston is a forgone conclusion. Just leave Wilyer out of the deal, please! 🙏🏼 That kid is a throwback to the type of ball player that made me fall in love with this game. Once he figures out the strike zone and how to take advantage of the Monster, as a Left handed hitter, he’ll become a legend around here. If he has to go for Crochet, I guess… 🤷🏻♂️But I’d be reluctant about letting him go. The dude plays the game the way it was meant to be played and should be there as an influence on the team. Especially, with all the younger players expected be with the big club very soon. ✌🏻
I feel like two moves directly impacted something yesterday… trading for Garrett crochet. I think they took the risk on pivetta because they wanted to be able to sign a QO guy without any draft compensation. And they probably wouldn’t be bothered with that in a big signing like fried or burnes. So my thinking is they did that so they could go hard on Teo and try and trade for crochet. The second thing was protecting Jhostynxon. Seems like the perfect fit for a trade piece for crochet
At the deadline the noise you heard was a collective sign of relief from Sox Nation. Also do you think the Sox missed out in protecting any other players that are now Eligible for Rule 5. Should be interesting to see who the Sox lose and who they gain if anyone.
Idk if it was risky. His metrics are exactly what teams are looking for. Top of the scales IVB, top of the scales breaking ball. Top of the scales stuff+ and location+ K-BB rate higher than most. Ppl don’t want to admit how much of a dumpster fire bloom’s tenure was from a pitching development standpoint. He was on the way this year with breslow but he’ll catch on somewhere else and fans who were willing to drive him to Logan will say “oh gee; I wish we had a guy like that on the roster” the same way they said that about Sale all season long. He doesn’t have the ceiling of Sale but he could easily be a durable 2/3 starter for another team and they will miss him when he’s gone
I was dumbfounded as well. The question now is who would be willing to give up that pick to have Pivetta? Does the pick comp disappear if he isn't signed by a certain date?
He just simply has to sign like we saw with Snell/monty last year that could be all the way into end of spring training. I don’t think there is a very hard deadline no
Sign Hernandez for right. Trade Story and Abreu (and a prospect?) for Castillo, Haniger, and Garver (Red Sox taking on the latter two contracts so that the M's take Story's). Trade Yoshida for Montgomery. Rafaela plays short until Mayer is ready. Perhaps go after Donovan to play second until Campbell is ready.
Corbin, I was a bit surprised at Mata and Campbell's DFA's. I liked them both better than Shugart and Horn. I realize most fans didn't love Blaze Jordan enough to protect, but I liked Monegro and Jordan more than Garcia and Dobbins. Maybe the Sox really hated Campbell's mustache. LOL
I was surprised to see we protected one catcher, not counting Mickey Gasper. They did sign veteran catcher Seby Zavala but I think he's a depth piece in Worcester....I agree with you Corbin on OF Jhostynxon Garcia as trade bait for a Crochet deal. Garcia is a good prospect but honestly I don't see him sticking around. I see a team like the Rockies or A's interested in Mata......
It's a great thing that Pivetta did not take the QO. Very smart gamble by Breslow and it's a nice place to be with a 2nd rounder. Unfortunately Mata just could not stay healthy so that move makes sense.Cambell just needs a new team and a reset not the Red Sox. All in all the moves made sense

if the Red Sox were giving up two top prospects including one that would be ready in 2025 why would they not go after a higher ceiling player in Crochet who you can contol at a lower cost?
@@robertchflynn Because you also get 2 other MLB players with long term control. Crochet only has 2 years, Cease has 1.
