I am 67 years old and have been a "shade tree" mechanic since I was 7 years old. I found an old rusty push mower in the woods, discarded. I took it home, fixed it and started mowing yards for $2.00 per. It was quite an increase from turning in empty pop bottles for .02c deposit. LOL Love watching the blow-by-blow troubleshooting here on this channel.

I'm the owner of this Sonata. For clarity....The only reason I kept the car was that a brand new engine was warrantied into it at 100k. In hindsight I should have sold it immediately after the engine instal. As far as the shotgun approach to repair....I bought what was cheap enough and easy enough to do, I spent less than $100 on the parts I knew I could get to In my driveway hoping I could catch an easy fix. Money wasted...yup . Once I dug in all signs were leading away from easy... The trunk was cleared and shop vaced just as a show of respect for a fellow working man. These guys were great...couldnt be happier....car has been inspected and sold.

You sir, are an amazing diagnostic technician! It’s just astounding that you can find these problems when others can’t. No matter if it’s physical (environmental), electrical or mechanical! The only thing I cannot discern from these videos is how much time you take to just find the problem! No doubt, you are a God send to your community, no matter what you charge them! In my 70 years, I have only come across TWO auto technicians with your knowledge and ethics, but they sadly, are long gone. Keep it up Eric for a few more years. Then either retire to the front office or out of the industry for good, before you are afflicted with inevitable debilitating arthritis in the arms and hands like my brother. He was also an ethical master mechanic for the last 55 years or so and is suffering greatly from arthritis today!

Don't put that off, Guy. Colon cancer is one of the more common cancers and it's incredibly easy to screen for and remove early before you have any worries of metastasis. Yeah, the bowel prep sucks, I know. I did it twice. It's only for a day and if you're fine you get to chill for ~5 years. If you've got precancerous polyps or if you actually have cancer right now, you'll save your own life and get many more years with your family. Just picture your spouse and kids (if applicable) crying at your memorial service when you're drinking that laxative and it'll help it go down.

My wife's car had a bad gas smell on her 2011 Cataract DTS and it did have the access panel in the trunk. Upshot was meeses. Chewed through the line, didn't care for the octane we use and quit. I was able to replace line without removing the tank, which requires dropping rear sub assembly. Nother Cadillac trick of engineering. And is still running to this day. It is for sale though if you want a nice cruiser... Thought not. Well, worth a shot... I have learned so much on the evap system watchin your vids and I never tire of them. Hey Eric,
As a matter of fact, Australian/NZ Falcon derivatives from 1988 used the giant plastic threaded ring, plastic tank, and (eventually) used a plastic pump. The EU Ford products also use all plastic.
You’re right though, those plastic rings are a real PITA, apart from the X-threading issue, unscrewing them can be a struggle even with the correct tooling.

If that cat gets a tick on it........ It would be a Lunatick! And that was an amazing story about the truck having the hole burnt in the fuel pump without catching fire! That was rich..... Too rich of a mixture to burn, that is!

Ford Focus had the plastic screw on lock ring. Not sure if it was all model years but I do remember those, they were much easier to work on.

I 100% agree with your view of Dorman parts. Thay are absolute crap. I have bought many of their parts for my 2005 Honda Accord and most are either broken out of the box or fail shortly after installation. I will never buy from them again!! I'm glad I'm not the only one that has had problems with them.

They are ok for trim parts and anything that doesn't involve electrickery. If you want a replacement electrical component look elsewhere for sure. Chinesium electrical's blow chunks.

Experience told you what the problem was right away, but no assumptions, test to confirm. That's the kind of mechanic I take my car to.

Had an issue with my Chevy Cruze (gasp) throwing a code for an evap leak. I replaced the fuel cap because I thought it was an inexpensive possibility to fix it and if it worked it was great. If it doesn’t work at least it has a new gas cap. Long story short it didn’t work.
Took it to the dealer to have them do the smoke test. They had it 3 days and they couldn’t locate the leak. I asked them where they hook the smoker to and they replied that they connected it to the fuel filler tube. I realized right then that the leak was where they were connecting everything. I sanded the filler tube down, hit it with some white lithium grease and sent it. Drove it like that for another 8 years without seeing the evap leak code.

One thing I always do with your vent check is after you've confirmed you believe it is sealed is not just to hook it back up but to plug it off and check your flow meter on the smoker. You can find the main leak and claim a fix then get burned by either the aftermarket or old part not quite sealing but not evident with the other leak.

Thank you so much for this, it ws so instructive (I have a Kia). I didn't know you had to move the dead bodies to get at the pump (it's not in the manual you see). I used to leave them there and go at it fron underneath. Now I'm educayteded

Ford used the large plastic screw on rings for the fuel pump as well. Give the ring a ride through a hot parts washer to make it easier to screw back on.

Anyways to make a long story short, she loved touching the butt part and the get right with God comment , both of us enjoyed your show while having a few beers. Hugs and best wishes to both of you from both of us in Canada.

My uncle had to replace the fuel pump on his Silverado twice, once in the median of an interstate off ramp in St. Louis because no tow truck would come out there because they said it was too dangerous due to traffic flow. Homeless dude who was panhandling came down and helped him drop the tank after he got the new part delivered to him by autozone (the kid literally tossed it out the window to him as he drove by!) It was a real pain to do!
