Might be interesting to compare the present exhaust to one like that.

    • @stuntvist
      @stuntvist Месяц назад +13

@@camino6431 Unlikely to add much performance through a different exhaust system other than going equal length. There isn't anything particularly restrictive about the thing. It's just the sound from an x-pipe that would be utterly ridiculous on a little lawn mower engine like that lol. The individual carbs are already overkill for practically anything, but they should help with response as you have less vacuum from the top of the intake valves to the throttle body (carb).
The one thing I can think of that could be of use would be to run the air filters for the carbs to a different location where they get more cold air and less hot engine bay air. Maybe a metal heatshield to cover the header and running the filters to the back of the windshield would help. After all, the lack of efficiency is why engines like these never make much power to begin with since more fuel goes to heating up the engine rather than making more power. Doesn't matter for a lawnmower where your main concern is having it be cheap enough, but if you want perfromance then it's something to keep in mind.

A group of scientists conducted a study to figure out why crows often manage to avoid being hit by cars but still sometimes end up as roadkill. They observed that crows are incredibly smart birds, able to work together and communicate warnings when danger is near. In fact, when they see a car approaching, the lookout crow always caws loudly, alerting the others to fly away just in time. But, after months of research, the scientists discovered the problem: crows can say “Caw! Caw!” to warn about American cars… but none of them know how to say “Renault!”

I just noticed that using the CVT clutch behind the Predator engine makes the Renault shift like an EV conversion that uses a manual transmission as part of the drivetrain. Transmissions are commonly used on low voltage settups (less than 180V) where the motor rpm can't go high enough to reach freeway cruising speeds if the gearing was setup for optimal acceleration. These cars are driven similarly to the Renault except that the acceleration gear is usually 2nd and the speed gear is usually 3rd. And you could drive the car in third, or even 4th all the time if you were willing to live with the less than stellar acceleration. It's a curious coincidence that two very different drivetrains could act the same way.

    Hi Jimbo
For what it’s worth, 70mph would have been a perfectly respectable top speed for such a car, as it left the factory. If you envisage going much faster, you really need to invest in suspension and brake performance modifications, similar to those available at the time. I bet you never thought you’d need to consider that, with your lawn mower motor modifications.

    • @kasuraga

I love the R&D you've shown us here. It has been extremely inspirational. I have wanted to create a range extender for cheap used 1st gen EVs like Nissan Leaf, Focus EV, 500e, Smart EV, iMiEV, Spark EV, ect where a reciever hitch is mou ted on the back with a 5th wheel mounted on a hinged arm with a coilover for damping and articulation, powered by an engi e like this. Its only job would be to maintain steady speeds on mainly level ground, accelleration, in town, traffic would all be electric and any steep hills at higher speeds the electric drive could again step in. It would essentially trick the ev into thinking it is coasting. Its a perfect job for a small engine like this, all accessories are handled by the car electrically, all the power can be aplied directly to this 5th wheel behind it. I would say that even if only 30-50mpg was possible depending if you are cruising at 45mph or 80mph, the rare occasion ypu wpuld need to go a cpuple hundred miles in a day on the highway or B roads, the cost and convience is totally worth it. Of course to make a contraption like this worth it, you would probably need to keep the price down to a couple thousand dollars at most, then add a $2000-5000 old EV with 45-70miles of range. It would be a good alternative to people who cant afford a new $35,000+ automobile for basic subsistance uses and they can't afford to drive a cheap but bulletproof old truck or car around that gets 8-12mpg either. This research is great and I think that there could be a few people out there turning these engimes into transportation.

Can’t wait for the stupercharger. Have you considered electric motor assist? That would be a cool project.

The ports look fine. The normal thing to do is to match the ports to the gaskets but those already match.

WooHoo, c´mon, We can crack 70! I think the Renault was to top out at around 120km/h anyways so You´re so close… I think new shocks would do Yous well.
Just take the cheapest that fit- for science. But I think that would help make the wheels feel more like …wheels.
I love the Honda Diesel- what a lovely car it became. Kind Regards

I can see more speed and better fuel economy coming soon! a couple of side air intakes feeding those carburettors (air fed from a non-heated source + some free ram-air charging effect) plus a lid stuck on the engine bay for better aerodynamics.
note 1: those who use no assembly lubrication rely on the farce, may the farce be with them!
note 2: the 9mm wrench was designed to be beaten onto a rounded 3/8" (9.5mm) head 😁

VW used a 9mm 12 point for the pressure plate bolts. That's a rare one! Like GM using the 5.5mm for the ignition modules in HEI distributors...

Ford used 5.5mm for a lot of Super Duty grille bolts. My 1999 F250 and 2005 F350 used them.

For assembly lube you ought to try what shops used to use back in the day, Vaseline. It's pure petroleum jelly and will react with very little if anything in the engine. It's closer to being a soft grease but without all sorts of additives mixed into it, it will dissolve in oil and gasoline will strip it with no issue whatsoever if you need to remove it from your parts for some reason.

Great video! I wouldn't see a problem reusing the metal gaskets. I would anneal them before reuse though. Have you figured out a heater for winter driving? I imagine it's not the worst car in the snow. Like the old Bug, it should be decent I would think.

Congratulations! You've successfully converted a Renault into a "half engined" soviet ZAZ (aircooled V4 pushing in the beginning something looking like the original FIAT 600, and later on similar to this Renault sized and looking cart with stolen from german NSU Prinz 4 looks) :) Your contraption seems more powerful than soviets' one, though.

Spray headliner adhesive or spread Edelbrock Gasgasinch on one side of the gasket and the surface it mates to, then seat it. Then grease the other side. What I did for years on Chevy V8 valve covers that were frequently removed for adjusting solid lifters. Glued the gaskets to the valve covers and greased the head side. Works like a charm.

You could install a small cable operated disc brake system on the input shaft of the transmission to stop the rotation for the initial shift into gear, put the break lever on the shifter.

If it's unstable at speed, I'd check for lash in the steering box (or equivalent), see if any bushings are worn out, and maybe look into shocks and struts! For such an old car I doubt the parts are readily available, but it could be a fun episode to see what kind of difference it could make to your driving experience. Maybe put it up on Jack stands and see what the steering does before and after, and do some of those snakey turns on the road to see body roll and all that.

@@robotcantina8957 Oh, I guess you've already researched those components? That's unfortunate... Still, if you ever get any hits on those parts, I'd love to see some kind of update on it in the future!
