Beckett Simonon Review - Beckett Simonon makes high quality boots at direct to consumer pricing but does that mean that they are high quality? I cut one of their Dowler Boots in half to see what’s inside. This Beckett Simonon boot is the first boot I have cut in half that is made with a blake stitch construction. So I also explain what the difference between a goodyear welt vs stitchdown vs blake stitch vs cemented built boots.

I have this exact pair of boots, and I LOVE them. They regularly go on sale for $180, which is the price I got them for, and I think they're a good value at $240 and a STEAL at $180. I've owned boots from other mid-high-end brands like Blundstone and Red Wing, and I've seen a lot of videos from your channel about the truly great boots like Whites, so I think I have a sense of what's out there in terms of boots and value, and these are excellent in my opinion. The construction is quite good, they look fantastic, they're very comfortable once broken in, and for the price you get a lot for your money. They're obviously not a work boot, but they aren't trying to be and aren't advertised that way. They're a great casual-dress boot that you can wear every day in a city setting and also won't look out of place with a pair of slacks in a nice hotel bar. I own a few other shoes from Beckett Simonon, bought them all on sale, happy with each one. The ONLY problem is the shipping times, it took me 4 months to get these particular ones, but that's how they get the price lower and it's worth the wait. I think I'd happily skip over almost every other boot in the sub-$300 range and get these instead.

I think we should start calling them “faux caps” rather than “fake toe caps” because the latter implies they’re trying to deceive you. But I think most of the time people just want the toe cap look without the toe cap bulk unless it’s a serious work boot.

I have a multitude of pair of Allen Edmonds, but those are retail at 400 (park ave’s, etc).
I bought a pair of Beckett Simonon, Chelsea boots, because they resemble that of the YSL Chelsea boots. They had the same almond toe and sleek design that you would get from a designer, but without the price pointpoint (and terrible quality imo). BS Chelsea boots are by far the most comfortable boots I’ve owns for dress. the last, the materials used- I’m very impressed. The kicker is the stitching done- I don’t buy shoes that are glued or put together poorly with cheap materials. This is a perfect price point for somebody who’s wanting affordable, comfortable dress shoes with a good last. Allen Edmonds doesn’t always fit the bill, these did.

I think they missed an opportunity here. They've got a midsole, why not make it a rapid blake stitch? That's probably my favorite machine-made construction method because it combines the advantages of a blake stitch with the advantages of a goodyear welt.
When resoling this it could easily be converted enabling it to be resoled more often.

I wear dress/casual boots for work and because I ride a motorcycle, I like that they are more protective/supportive (not as much as a true motorcycle boot) than a dress street shoe. Just ordered my second pair - brogues in the pull up leather. Got on sale for ~ $180. Long wait until February but I think worth it. I appreciate the regular customer outreach during the wait.

  • @satchrocks34

    Yo Weston, excellent video!
I especially wanna compliment you for not just outright trashing Blake stitched shoes compared to GYW and stitchdown. I have some blake shoes and they're awesome. Have had them resoled no problem and they're super comfortable. While I'm not wading in rivers and lakes with them, I also have yet to have any kind of noticeable issues with water seeping in.
They are absolutely for more sleek and dressy styles and not for workboots but even some workboots use the blake or mckay stitch to keep their insole/lasting boards in place (ie. Nick's Handmade boots, for example, where they attach the liner, insole and a midsole. Flaring out the upper to do a stitchdown to attach the outsole).
And good point about resoles. Most people i know are not resoling their shoes 5-6 times. I barely know anyone that has resoled casual shoes more than once (some blue collar friends resole work boots more). So i think it's less of an issue than most people think. Especially given that with dressy casual shoes, it's not like you're beating em up. Further, with GYW, especailly if its not with a holdfast or channeled insole, the gemming can come loose and fall off the insole, meaning you will need to get your boots re-lasted. I don't know how huge of an issue that generally is, but it can happen.
Lastly, given that BS put a midsole on these boots, is it not odd that they wouldn't go for a Blake Rapid Construction??? I guess it adds a whole layer of work and complexity to the boot but it seems like it would be reasonable given that they already attached a midsole. Not saying Blake Rapid is infinitely better and it would add to the price point, just that it seems like a good idea with these boots specifically and would make future resoles potentially simpler. Would like to know if it's purely a cost thing for BS

I'm curious how soft the rubber sole is. I own several pairs of Beckett Simonon shoes and I believe they are a great value. I work in an office environment so they do just fine for me. By just watching this video you'll probably start getting 20% off coupon codes, they are EVERYWHERE! Knocking 20% off makes them much more attractive, even though they look pretty good in my humble opinion. Most of my Beckett Simonon shoes don't have any QA issues (unlike Allen Edmonds). I own 1 pair of loafers with a lot of loose grain but oh well... A friend of mine has a pair of boots just like the ones you cut and I was really pleased with how soft the leather is, it's really buttery. These are definitely not work boots and not all boots have to be work boots, look at Alden, Allen Edmonds and so on. They can probably take just as much of a beating as most of these $200 boots posing as work boots. Don't even get me started on Doc Martens....

    • @KoolKyurem25
      @KoolKyurem25 2 года назад +2

@@gemasboy After 2 years with no conditioning, the leather seems fine, if a bit dry. The areas that see a lot of flex like the toe box and below the ankles definitely have some cracking showing. But the toe and heel seem to still be in good condition. The leather that isn't creased frequently is still fairly supple. It certainly isn't the highest quality leather but it's not bad. The bordeaux color way still looks good. The leather liner is still comfortable. If you have wide feet, the leather will stretch a little around it but the lasts don't seem particularly made to accomodate wide feet. But that's to be expected from a smaller brand, unlike Allen Edmonds or Thursday. I bet if I had conditioned them their entire life, they'd be in far better condition with far less creasing and cracking.

I have a pair of Dowlers. As you pointed out, they are strictly on the dressier side of the casual boot spectrum...the opposite end of the rugged, overbuilt PNW boots. The break-in is extremely easy and the leather quality is actually pretty decent. Unlike my Nicks, these are not multi-purpose boots. I view my Dowlers as urban footwear, suitable say in an office setting as part of a business casual wardrobe or worn on a date to a nice restaurant. In that sense, the Dowler is more versatile than my other boots. On the other hand, I wouldn't rough up my Dowlers in hopes of getting a patina. Nor am i certain the boots would hold up if I take them off the beaten trail, such as hiking, or doing light duty at the warehouse or in the yard, or in inclement weather. For these reasons, while I enjoy wearing my Dowlers on occasions when they are suitable, they are not my day-to-day, go-to boots....

For the loafers, I downsize to an 11 to minimize heel lift and just use an adhesive additional arch support. I have an average width foot, and I find that they fit me well. I've worn my Dowlers 3-5x/week for a few years, and they're holding up well with regular conditioning. I get compliments on my shoes pretty regularly. Like others have said, if you get their coupons or sales, they're really good value.

Awesome review and channel (longtime viewer). is that the “full grain” or the “pull up” version on website? Guessing the latter given the rubber sole, which I’d like for the practicality, but still hoping dressy enough to wear with a suit. Thanks!

I’ve always thought this brand had some great looking boots. Only thing keeping me from getting a pair has been concern over sizing since I tend to need a wide width in most footwear.

My true to size on a Brannock device is a straight 10 on both feet, slightly wider due to me having flat feet. Beckett Simonon suggested I order a size 10 1/2 and in all my Allen Edmonds im a size 9 1/2 EE. To say the least these fit amazing hope that helps some.

Very nice looking boots, and as you said, not really work boots, but would be fine for that purpose if the work didnt really require a steel toe or even a true toe cap for durability. I have an old pair of dark brown Beckett Siminon dress shoes, and they are probably the most comfortable pair I own...some of my others have required me to fit aftermarket insoles to make them liveable for all day wearing.

I've had a pair of their Lopez boots since Nov of 2021 and I absolutely love them and got them with a discount code for $190. No toe cap on mine and eyelet laced all the way up but other than that, they seem extremely similar to these.
IMO, for the money, for a nice casual/dress boot for work or going out, they're a great buy.

I own a pair of these. My only concern is how to polish them? Beckett Simonon says not to polish pull-up leather, but I think sooner or later I’ll scuff or scar them. Other than that I love these: they look great, aren’t too heavy, and go with anything from jeans to khakis. I’m planning on ordering some shoes from them soon. I’ve conditioned these once with Bicks ; that’s it.

I have seen this kind of stitching before on some shoes, always though it was strange seeing the stitching on the bottom of the soles though. Good description of how they are made, really nice looking boots as well for the price.
I work in a Meat Department for a living, so my work shoes and boots deal with tons of moisture, blood, cold then hot temperatures, and cleaning chemicals 5 days a week. Since I bought a boot dryer my shoes do last longer, but on general if I get 4 months out of a pair of boots I am lucky. I splurged a few times over the past 20 years on Ariat and Justin Boots hoping they would last longer, but have never gotten more than a year out of any boots before they are falling apart. So now I get cheapest boots I can find and put a decent little insole in to help my feet survive.
The pair of boots I have now are right around a year old, but I only spent $40 on them from Walmart. The Brahma Alpha Steel Toe Waterproof work boot, it was slip resistant and 'Waterproof' so I bought them. They have lasted longer than any other pair and are on their second set of insoles, they even went quite a few months keeping moisture out of my socks. Kind of mind blown that one of the cheapest boots I've ever bought have outlasted Redwings and Ariat. If you ever get Brahma asking to sent you a pair, ask for them I would love to see your review on them. Maybe see why they outlasted $400 Redwings I bought and actually took care of.

@@jaalan7896 With the Redwings and the Ariat's I've purchased in the past I used to do that every couple weeks. But nothing seemed to stave off the floor chemicals and constant moisture. Ariat is my brand of boots that just fits my feet perfectly, what I wear outside of work that last for many years.

I have a pair of thier split toe derbies and love them, I get compliments all the time. The leather is almost as thick as my work/chore Double H boots but that liner is vachetta leather which is also used in Louis Vuitton purses, buttery buttery soft. They have a piping between the liner and outer leather along the edges which is a nice touch. Very comfortable, they are my primary office shoe.
