    Nice, I'm typing this on a M10110 keyboard, which is the predecessor to the one you used (without the numpad), also using the Drakware adapter. For a linear keyboard, it's very noisy/pingy, but it still works surprisingly well on a modern computer.

    That is a nice way to get a vintage keyboard working. Personally I would want to build a hackintosh inside a vintage mac shell to go with the look. Possibly an old Apple II GS or similar. Even a G3 might have the right kind of colouring to match.

    • @Datan0de
      @Datan0de 5 лет назад

      I looked into doing that a while back! I was going to get a non-working Mac Classic (or similar vintage) and stuff a PPC Mac Mini and various adapters & a USB hub into it. Would've loved to see OS X on that little screen! Sadly, figuring out how to get the Mini to output to the Classic's built-in monitor proved to be beyond my capabilities.

    What a magical time we live in! I once tried to do something similar by daisy chaining ADB and USB adapters but never got it to work. Glad to know that there's now a single adapter that'll do the trick. Also great knowing that I'm not the only one weird enough to want to do this. :-)

    Heh, glad to see I'm not the only person who uses an old Apple keyboard on occasion. I have an Apple M0115 Extended Keyboard with Alps SKCM Orange switches in it and while it's not a daily driver as I have a lot of mechanical keyboards both old and new, that one in particular is really great to use, even with Windows instead of macOS. If you can track down an AEK or AEK2, you can use S-Video cables as a cheap replacement and for a really good ADB to USB converter, there's a guy on ebay who makes them who goes by Tinkerboy or something like that, and it's pre-flashed with a keymap that's 100% compatible with Windows, macOS and whatever else.

    • @darwiniandude
      @darwiniandude 5 лет назад +1

      Anti consumer? Their entire product focus is the consumer.

    • @HisVirusness
      @HisVirusness 5 лет назад +3

      @@darwiniandude They don't allow authorized technicians to have spare parts on hand; they're only available to be ordered on a per-case basis, so availability is never guaranteed.
      They don't believe consumers have the right to repair the products that they paid for, so if you take a product in to get fixed and they noticed it's already been open, it's an automatic rejection, regardless if you're willing to pay or not.
      They purposely gimp their products so you have to buy an updated product within a certain window.
      Let's not even get into port removal.
      To cite an older example: For the original iMac, if you wanted to update the RAM, you couldn't use compatible RAM that you could get at the store; you had to get special RAM that was often more expensive. Despite being literally identical and otherwise compatible, it still wouldn't work because it wasn't Apple-exclusive RAM.
      Those are just a few examples.
      On a side note, I once saw a 1997 iMac for sale at a garage sale for $20, keyboard and all. Quickly scooped it up because I figured it'd be a neat project, since I hadn't installed Linux on Apple hardware before. I backed up all of the data (there were a LOT of late 90's, early 00's MP3 files inside, after all) and successfully installed a very lightweight distro of Linux. After about ten minutes of use, I started to smell hot plastic. Then I noticed something: There wasn't a fan inside of it. What kind of incompetent knuckleheads would design a computer, and not even bother to even put a fan inside? Apple.

    • @darwiniandude
      @darwiniandude 5 лет назад +1

      @@HisVirusness Wow. Not sure why I bother, but a few points:
      For service, try an Authorised Service Provider. In my experience a good one is often more flexible than Apple, while still having access to genuine parts and warranty service.
      Port removal is how you move things forward. The original iMac you speak of shipped with USB - no floppy drive, no serial or modem ports. This angered Mac users at the time but sold well and generated an industry around USB-A port accessories. Plus it was much simpler for the user. USB-C ports (most of which on Apple machines are also Thunderbolt 3) allows charging, 5k displays, or anything to be plugged in. Charge your Nintendo Switch from a 2018 iPad Pro? Done. Charge your Pixel 3 from your MacBook charger? Done. Charge your MacBook from your monitor? Done.
      Fans are annoying, but Apple has often erred on the side of too much silence and not enough cooling, but there have been many fanless models over the years. For audio production work which I do, the lack of significant fan noise in (most) models has been incredibly helpful without a separate sound isolation booth or sticking the computer in another room with long cables.
      But, my comment wasn't about hardware at all, it was about software, especially compared to other companies. They are consumer focused in their stance on privacy. Their own software that comes with the machines does not have challenge response hardware keyed copy protection. There is simple one click backup of all software and documents to an external drive, hourly with full versioning, and you can restore that into a new machine including all your old software. Microsoft, for comparison, has removed Windows backup. They removed the capable free email program (last called Windows Live Mail) and removed it from their website, no migration path. I've had clients who had backups, all their email is inside archives which can only be accessed by software Microsoft removed from their website. On a Mac you have always been able to bring all your old programs into your new computer, that has never been the case with Windows, you have to reinstall everything from scratch.

    That vinyl wrap with the logo would be awesome! Are there any keys that you miss having on the old keyboard? That might help you determine what to do with the trackpad. If you find yourself needing to back to the modern keyboard and having a matching trackpad to go with it. Either way it would be dope...

    I like the idea of making the vinyl with the logo. Might want to tone down the brightness of the logo so it blends ina bit better? I dunno.

    I use Apple Extended Keyboard II for my iMac 5K; only 1 bad thing impossible to use CAPS LOCK as Esc

    • @RetroRecipes
      @RetroRecipes  5 лет назад

      With the Drakware adapters like the one I featured this is possible I think. On the Macintosh Plus keyboard caps lock turns `~ into Esc.

      @@RetroRecipes Doesn't the CAPS LOCK lock?

    • @RetroRecipes
      @RetroRecipes  5 лет назад

      Yes. Because of reasons, on this keyboard Caps toggles the keyboard into 'layer 1'. With Caps down, the number keys become function keys etc. You can assign almost anything using the keymap editor. And if you need CAPITALS you just hold Shift.

    I've got a bunch of these old keyboards and I purchased one of these drakware adapters (Thanks) so I can test the keyboards. Do you know (I saw this video a while back and can't remember if you mentioned) do the Cap Locks and Enter keys, on the old keyboards, not work with this adapter? Because that's what I'm finding on all of the ones I've tested (I should also mention this is happening with the non-extended keyboards of this type {the M0110})

    • @RetroRecipes

      So, download his firmware update and config tool. I have configured CAPS to work. Occasionally I have to press it on/off twice as the computer thinks its on when it's off, because it's a toggle. But it works and this is still my daily keyboard! I also configured Ctrl to be accessed by pressing Clear on the numeric keypad, because this keyboard has no Ctrl. And I never use Clear.
