Even though I never owned an Amiga, I find these vids so relaxing to watch! These Amigas were so moddable, and they look great. I'd put one in my house just to look at it. Who needs Apple??
though just until very recent you had to pillage an CDTV keyboard for those keycaps and many have done so... looks awesome but gives a bitter taste in your mouth.
Look at the amount you've grown in just the time since I predicted you would... Really proud of you man, and the growing effort you're putting in to these. Thanks for the content bud.
Got 12 AMIGA 500 en 6 AMIGA 500 Plus and the cases are great. I waiting for a black Vampire case for the Vampire 500 V4. Got 25 Chinon FB 354 Rev E internal drives and to many Chicken Lips keyboards and A501’s. I’m now busy with the Wicher500i’s and the ACA500Plus’s. Nice AMIGA 500 collection.
I recently bought an A500 that looks just like these, but it came from Poland. It has a green top, the Gotek under the floppy, the S-Video adapter, and the three switches which control whether the Gotek or the Floppy is DF0:, which Kickstart to use (1.3 or 3.x), and to disable the extra RAM. I'm very happy with it.
I have a revision 6A that I'm currently restoring and I actually did that specific chip memory mod today. Mounting a gotek under the floppy drive and pimping the case seems interesting too.
You just reminded me of how I added a switch on the back of my A2000 to switch between the default 68000 and 68030/68882 GVP GeForce board back in the early '90s as some software couldn't cope with the 68030 and I didn't want to lose the ability to run a lot of software.
Nice work there, just refurbished my A1200 which I bought in '94. Retro brighten and re-capped (yes the right way ;) ) now waiting for a GBS8220 board as HDMI is somewhat expensive as I don't know how much I'm going to use it again.
1:13 - I mean... I guess you could send one to somebody who's looking to realize their childhood dream of owning an Amiga 500 :) Yeah I should have just bought one back when they were cheap...
Fantastic work! My Amiga is too clean and original to mod but I plan to buy a cheap neglected project Amiga in the future and this video has given me some more ideas. Cheers :)
Great Video (some people are so talented it just makes you sick lol). I remember doing the switch mod to my A500 back in the day. I recently found a WTS Pro Agnus in it's box that I must have fitted but removed, before selling that Amiga. It takes the chip ram up to 2MB.
I think Amiga that had a red case and white keys looked cool, although the one that looked like an SX-64 keyboard also looked cool as well. I think I should make an Amiga .mod tune some day. Great video as always 👍🏽
I wanna mode my A500 case too, as well as do some more stuff with my A1200. been thinking of putting an IDE 2 SD card adapter in to use as backup boot hard drive and such, as well as easilly transfer files between Amiga and PC. and also to be able to easilly swap out different installs of Amiga OS on the A1200
My friend got an Amiga500 when we were teenagers; It came with floppy discs labels something like "Extra Fonts" and we were such noobs to computers that we couldn't figure out what "fonts" were LOL
Excellent Hacks! If you can't do an RGB display of some sort, S-Video works surprisingly well! Hey, someone actually uses shrink wrap tubing on the connectors. Bravo. A+. 👍💾
For a man with so many Amigas sitting around, I would be a very grateful recipient of one, and I promise that i'd give them a good home. And you'd be pleased to know that my real name actually is...... Geordie. No kidding!
Awesome I really must get myself an NTSC Amiga someday I went from a C128 right onto 386 IBM PC clone like most here in the US who went from a C64 or C128 to a PC.
Sir, I have my own ways ;) Have a look at my blog. Also, what Adrian does is very cool method too. However, I have more control with my methods. Sometimes, these ABS plastics has Bromine compounds mixed differently and retrobrighting won't work evenly. Let's say that 1-3% cannot be retrobrigted properly. I have around 90x A500 with various plastics and did retrobrighting on another 100 more so I kinda have my own point of view on it :)
Thanks for sharing those lovely recoloured A500 cases! So is there any point in creating an HDMI output for any of the Amiga series? Or would that “cheat” be left to the Amiga Forever software running on PC?
So after watching your videos for a little while I was inspired by your antics and as such my A600 is going through the retrobriting process in the glorious UK sunshine so should be ready in about June 2019. Do you have any tips for cleaning the metal back plate on the A600? Love the channel though, jolly good work and always enjoy the excruciatingly British puns, whilst I enjoy a cup of Earl Grey in my local Wimpy of course.
Lol! You could try soaking it in vinegar. Then use baking soda and a toothbrush as a light abrasive. Failing that just go for a zinc or silver paint spray. 👍🕹️
Perifractic's Retro Recipes, thankyou! I’ll give it a go. The next bit of the fun is cramming the Gotek in there... space is not a luxury the A600 has.
Someone mentioned the Black Amiga with Black Keyboard was to 'Die For!" I Agree! How was that keyboard done? Can't be HydroGraphics as the keys would lose their lettering, no? -Mark.
If you had as many C64's as AMIGA's that you have disposables available for modding the hack out of like this AMIGA one what weird mods would you try out on a pimped up C64 Dual SID, Region Mod on Switches, 50/60 on switches, S Video out, something even more whacky HDMI out, C64 Gotec Mod if any? HDMI on that AMIGA would have been a fun one and probably better as it's a much smaller straight lined output which means it takes less cutting in the case than S-Video and a possible true HD output for only some things not games on the 3 figure output as AMIGA on 4 figure reses was HD before HD existed boasting up to four figure graphics modes before they came out as a TV format. Looking forward to see what you do frankinstein wise on the odd disposable in the future as it's just a bit of fun and some of them actually worthwhile and others not so much.
I have stopped retrobrighting. I prefer good paint jobs. I just bought a A500 where they have done the gotek ghetto mod, cutted the plastic and a bad paint job (grey). This video gave me an idea to do some sort of panel and get in a floppy too. If I connect the gotek + adapter to the external port and use a df0 switch (on even CIA) I can use the fdd and gotek at the same time. Of course it need a better paint job too. What is the best colour? If you have any tip I'm listning.
Wait I'm confused. How did you wire the switch for the Gotek and the floppy? I mean I get it needs to go to the 5V input pin but what about the other 3 pins?
FInally some signs of conciliation within our cat community. Still no real cat content but (quote from Emma the cat) "at least fatuitous dogs running away from some cat eyes on screen". Having that said she ran away a second later because the neighbour´s tiny dog was barking outside by the way... 😏 These are some great mods you show here, very interesting stuff! 👍
Nice video! I made similar kind of under-floppy gotek with 5V switch and both drives work BUT now floppy drive led is burning constantly. How did you get the floppy drive led working normally? Only the gotek own led works normally now. Do I have to cut some grounds as well with the switch?
How about a SSD drive connected to the Amiga or building a Amiga Server. I used to own a Amiga 500 and tried Amos, a program to make games, but mostly used it just for gaming.
Great idea to place the Gotek under the floppy. That doesn't destroy the optics too much. Some people tear really big holes in the case for that ... incredibly destructive. However, I would have installed a DF0/DF1 switch so that both drives can be operated in parallel. Also I would have installed the S-Video module instead of the monochrome composite socket, which you don't need anyway. So also the wiring would be shorter, but that's your machine. My conversion with 2 internal floppies and modified A520 as S-Video converter: a68k.de/galerie/viewtopic.php?p=163#p163 However, the signal path to the S-Video socket instead of the monochrome composite socket would have been too long in that case. But it also fits that way.
What is the state of the art for Amiga today? If I wanted an Amiga which one should I go out to acquire, how much RAM etc. and at what add on boards should I look?
In short, an Amiga 500 with a Vampire card will supply all the memory you need, CF card hard disk, speedy processor, and an HDMI output. I have the Mk2+. Some prefer the design of the A1200 though. Enjoy! 👍🕹️
Great video, just FYI the link to PCBWAY doesn't work correctly. You specified port 80 but not in the right format so the link breaks. Should just use the general url.
Hmmm odd. I went to check out the link and the redirect youtube threw my way had a :80 on the end of it (port 80 is just a normal HTTP request btw) so I figured it was a malformed url that you may have entered, as that does happen to most people, including me. The port 80 though I never see anyone add so I figured it was something just for youtube. Doesn't seem to be doing it now though. Even so I saw the link went to nowhere and thought you should know. :/ Weird. Not sure if youtube won't format this out but it looked like this for me www.pcbway.com:80 -- and the receiving server rejected it. Love the videos btw. :)
XRGB? That's just shy of 1000 Canadian Dollars with Exchange, Taxes, Import Duties and Shipping. OKay, kidding aside, NOT justifiable for me as I have MANY projects in need of financing. I've seen SCART/S-Video to HDMI for $10 all in and I have an S-Video to HDMI for my C-64 that seems pretty decent to me. (without my glasses of course, lol!). -Mark.
They certainly exist for less but have latency which makes gameplay tricky. It's my favourite because of the scanline generator and image enhancement, plus lowest latency. But of course budget is important too. If you're happy that's all that matters 😊
Love the video and regret I let my amiga go so many years ago... Question. Has anyone tried to put the Grotek in the external Floppy drive case and connect it that way? Would make an interesting mod and keep the look of the Original Amiga 500. Just a thought and I'm sure I'm not the first to think it. :) Love the channel!
Sorry, but I do not understand why powering of floppy or gotek. Why not activate both? One as df0:, the other as df1: Than making the select line for drive 0 and 1 switchable, so you can select wich drive to boot from. On an A500 you have to get df1_select from the external 23pin connector (or directly from the chip), but that does not seem hard. The advatage of having both drives connected: It would be the easyest way of copying disk to image and vice versa.
If you did it yourself, You should so do a video on it. It'd be awesome if you could provide your own patterns, I love "personalizing" my stuff! "This is my Amiga, there are many like it but this one is mine! My Amiga is my best friend etc... " ;)
I notice your soldering iron is no longer available on Amazon at the moment.. any other ones you'd recommend? Also, with all those mods on a single A500, have you uprated the PSU or are you still using a 'brick'?
I'm confused, with the RGB4ALL - Universal video converter installed how do you switch from composite to s-video is it via one of the three switches and if so how is it wired. I can't fathom it
I have a few a Amigas cd32 & 1200 2 500pluses 2.04 & 3.0 kick 1 500 1.2 kick I have to get the backup battery out of pretty sure there might be leaking by now, the 500 plus that I have upstairshas failed now you placed it about 10 years, ago I think I'm going to put buttons in. both the classes have hard drives and accelerator cards I put in from an omega so many years ago with the 68030 chip, replacing the 68000, and have 8 megs of fast and two megs of chip memory.
do you have those many amigas boards or is just for demostration pourposes? maybe fans would buy some of those amigas fixed with an autograph thought patreon or something
@@RetroRecipes sorry I didn't see that, but also that would be a challenge. It is a lot of stuff, but basically is a hard chore for buying from eBay from Argentina. Even buying from aliexpress is becoming hard because of the new laws.
I like you mods but why the switch that only lets you use the floppy or the GoTech? Couldn't both drives be available at the same time just different drive numbers? Is it a power issue?
Even though I never owned an Amiga, I find these vids so relaxing to watch! These Amigas were so moddable, and they look great. I'd put one in my house just to look at it. Who needs Apple??

That black amiga with black keys is to die for.
Another great video, Chris!
Thanks mate. Yes I was drooling over that one too 🤤🕹️

Nice AMIGA 500 collection.
personally I'm not a fan of drilling holes in old computer but I can surly appreciate creativity! Great job!
I'm of the same view. Don't get me wrong its good to see however I want to be able to reverse any change.
I do agree, but case holes are easily restored... big or small... ruclips.net/video/K3q1gmte_CY/видео.html 😊🕹️
Magnificent job, not necessarily easy tho, chapeau bas!

Need to do the same mod with my Gotek. And MY GOD that black 500 with black keycaps is a thing of beauty!
It's a Shame the A1200 Isn't Deep enough to do this either :-(
My new Amiga 500 (just bought on eBay) is waiting to be modded, and this video gave me so many ideas! THANK YOU!
Brilliant!
My keyboard wasn't working so I took your advice and gave the board a lick. Sure enough, it tasted odd. I replied the CIA and now it works flawlessly!
That was a lovely collection of Amigas, cooked up to perfection and topped with a nice sprinkling of colour.👍
As someone from the North East, UK, that was a passable Geordie accent :) Also that carbon fibre wrap skinned Amiga looks amazing.
Whew thank you! 😂🕹️
I wonder how much money he'd want to sell the pimped cases...

I like your voice. It lies in a very pleasant frequency range, with gentle vibrations at the edges.
Mellifluous is the term you're looking for 😊
I have a Amiga 500 with all these additions. Thanks for the suggestions.
The inside of this amiga seems like a city, a little model of a city!
OOoooo! Kefrens - Desert Dream! Probably my favourite Amiga Demo of all time. I was there and voted for it back in '93. :-)
I just stumbled upon this. Damn I loved my amiga 500 back then and you have such a soothing voice. I guess I will stay a while and listen

Seeing that stack of A500’s made me super jealous. Haha! Know wonder I can never find Amigas on eBay, you already bought them all.
lol. Yeah, it's something seeing stuff like that... XD

Fantastic stuff. Even the pink Amiga looks cool.
Your vids are extremely useful and your puppy is stealing the show!

Love the channel!
I made a video doing just that! It's in my Amiga playlist 👍🕹️
Great mod!
Sorry, but I do not understand why powering of floppy or gotek. Why not activate both? One as df0:, the other as df1:
Than making the select line for drive 0 and 1 switchable, so you can select wich drive to boot from.
On an A500 you have to get df1_select from the external 23pin connector (or directly from the chip), but that does not seem hard.
The advatage of having both drives connected: It would be the easyest way of copying disk to image and vice versa.
The "Hydro Dipping"? Looks awesome, can you tint the keys without losing the lettering?
Nice idea! I'd say yes
Is there a video for Hydrographic Dipping your cases?
Sadly not, just the link that pops up to a similar video
If you did it yourself, You should so do a video on it. It'd be awesome if you could provide your own patterns, I love "personalizing" my stuff! "This is my Amiga, there are many like it but this one is mine! My Amiga is my best friend etc... " ;)
Ultimate key tinting solution is currently 'work in progress' :)
Love the Gotek below mod. Did you use DRAM or SRAM for the Chip RAM mod?
I think it was DRAM
I notice your soldering iron is no longer available on Amazon at the moment.. any other ones you'd recommend?
Also, with all those mods on a single A500, have you uprated the PSU or are you still using a 'brick'?
Thanks for letting me know. This is a good alternative: amzn.to/2ym9P2z
Also just the standard brick. The mods don't draw any more amps than the PSU gives out.
Where can I buy the Svideo adaptor and a replacement case for the A500? Do you have any cases for sale?
See description 👍🕹️
do you have those many amigas boards or is just for demostration pourposes? maybe fans would buy some of those amigas fixed with an autograph thought patreon or something
Thanks, see Description for eBay link to Pete's store 👍
@@RetroRecipes sorry I didn't see that, but also that would be a challenge. It is a lot of stuff, but basically is a hard chore for buying from eBay from Argentina. Even buying from aliexpress is becoming hard because of the new laws.
Sorry mate
@@RetroRecipes don't worry, maybe would be better soon. I hope.
Puppies!
Is that an animal fact? 😉🕹️
@@RetroRecipes Amigas are awesome, but puppies!
Jesus, with that kind of stockpile, you could put like 2 or 3 up for contest.
Pete still has 1 or 2 of these A500s available at his eBay store at the time of writing: ebay.to/2QBWnPD
I like you mods but why the switch that only lets you use the floppy or the GoTech? Couldn't both drives be available at the same time just different drive numbers? Is it a power issue?
The reason is a lot of games are hard coded only to load from DF0 so it's best to have neither on DF1
