  • Finally! ... get to show off my Toastrack. Having had video issues where it did not like my Scart to HDMI so the Byte Delight ZX-HD to the resue... but had to wait for a 2nd Raspberry Pi to make things offcial and work in the ZX-HD. Guess the 1st one was out of sorts. New one arrived and so far... all is well!
    Enjoy the excitement as I unbox my Toasty and get to use it playing my own game I am making, Invasion of the Cloud People.
    *Funny I called it an "Apple Pi" card. LOL

    I'm British and had a Spectrum+ in 1984 and am thrilled that an American aficionado like yourself collects these beautifully designed computers. You don't need to power them up, you just need to have them on your coffee table to look at.

    So much nostalgia. One of my biggest memories as a kid was opening my 48K spectrum, and the smell of rubber keypad and chemicals..... I miss that smell ! It's difficult to explain for it was very specific to the old spectrum.

    The ZX Spectrum 128 is the pinnacle of Spectrum computers imho.
    It still oozes elegant design and visual appearance.
    The ZX Spectrum opened up computing for the masses.
    Cheap enough to be affordable but also enough CPU power and RAM, of course, to do complex stuff.
    Mostly gaming... 😊
    And the ZX Spectrum (rubber-keyed wonder) is roughly half a year older than the C64.
    I have the whole Spectrum family in my collection, even a Spanish 128 model by investronica which came out in Spain prior to the market entry in England.
    That investronica unit has that nice keypad, too! Great for editing programs.
    Booting those machines means just a RAM check and then you are ready to go.
    Marvellous stuff! ❤

    That’s a very great ZX Spectrum 128K and your Game looks nice. Would be great to go a sideway then with years on my C64’s. Look for a 'Harlequin 128K rev 2D with a ZX Spectrum Plus case. Do now ZX Spectrum Games and Demos with the Turbo Chameleon 64 V1.

    Have now for two weeks also a ZX Spectrum 128K Toastrack boxed. Use it with the ZX-HD, DivMMC Enjoy! Pro One and the ZX-AY. Works great but must have new Caps, new AY stereo kit and a new membrane. This week the HARLEQUIN 128K REV 2D will come for my ZX Spectrum Plus case. And my ZX Spectrum 16K have a ZX Interface 2 with all 10 original boxed ROM Games cartridges. All my ZX Spectrum stuff have the original boxes and are complete. Have now three ZX Spectrum a 16K, 48K and the 128K Toastrack. Now it’s time for the ZX Spectrum Next if I can buy it. The SpectraNET would also be a great thing to use.

    OOh!! Thanks for showing us. Nice game! :) Ive been into Spectrums since I was a nipper. I dont have a 128 but I've 4 Spectrum 48Ks, one with a LO-Profile keyboard, I have several interfaces including a ultiface one, I have an Opus discovery 1 disc drive and a MICON MIDI interface. All sweet. :) Again, very cool game. Assembly would make it run . aa lot faster. I hope you get cracking on that. All the best!! :) b

      Btw, the game is fairly fast now. In the end I used an app that converted it to machine code and it plays like a video game now versus a slow mover. Later videos show that progress. 😋

    I love the look of that Spectrum 128 TR.
    I have tried compiling BASIC with the Softek compiler but found it would only work with the simplest of code. I had better results with HiSoft BASIC... so the opposite of your experience. Typically my code runs 5 to 7 times as fast after compilation.
    There are several good guides for Z80 machine code online. I've tried programming with a mix of BASIC and machine code, by passing values to and from the machine code routines with POKE and PEEK. There are many assemblers available. HiSoft made Devpac... Zeus assembler was a popular choice. I prefer to edit code on a PC (Linux) and then assemble using the Pasmo cross assembler. You can output to a TAP file or just load the binary into FUSE. My machine code tends to crash / lock up a lot, so the ability to take a quick snapshot before running makes development easier. In the old days a crash would mean loading the assembler and code from tape again... editing the file... re-assembling... re-testing... and re-crashing... until I gave up.
    I wondered if there was a ZX BASIC compiler that runs a PC environment too. There seem to be several IDE's on PC. There is also a compiler called ZXbasic by Boriel . It's written in Python and will run on Windows, Linux, and I think Apple too. I've not yet tried it out.

    • @MacSociety
      @MacSociety  5 лет назад

      what is weird, and maybe it is just some Sinclair Basic code the HiSoft compiler does not like, is I can compile the smaller version of my app (think it had issues with the 17k version though but will try again) and when it compiles, it is not working "right". Example... it places my random blue and red drops on the screen but all lined up left side of screen... instead of the random places the next loop tells them too. Then once drawn they all disappear and the game commences. I can move and my lightning and thunder move fine... but there is nothing to collect. LOL. Don't think it is the random calls as I use the same code to place the lightning and thunder to move to different spots once to other side of the screen... but could be something to do with it I suppose. Or some weird UDG issue. Not sure. Softek compiles it fine. Plays fine too. MCoder III compiles but immediately takes me to level like 7, end of game, and all trails of all UDGs are left behind. I can't move or die right away. Maybe some issue with ATTR and colors. Just weirdness!

    • @Inaflap
      @Inaflap 5 лет назад +2

      @@MacSociety I suspect the compilers are full of bugs. I've found some compilers won't work properly with the 128 whilst they are (mostly) okay with the 48K system. BTW Could you tell me how to compile using MCoder III ? I loaded that earlier, hoping to compare it with the other compilers, but there were no instructions on how to start compilation and I could not find any instructions online.

      @@Inaflap it runs and a small slit at bottom of screen shows progress. I did this from Fuse so saved as a Snap Shot at the end since I am still on the fence on how to properly use Fuse and write to .TAP the compiled code. The text shows how to do this for cassette but I am not sure how to do that in Fuse. I tried some options like the save as under the cassette area but that did not seem to work for me.

    • @Inaflap
      @Inaflap 5 лет назад +1

      @@MacSociety But how do you start Mcoder III running? The other compilers include on-screen instructions. Mcoder III just leaves me with an OK prompt. I type in some BASIC and I want to compile... is there a special key sequence to start compilation?
