I got a Spectrum for Xmas in 1985. I remember ripping off the wrapping paper and seeing the rainbow Spectrum logo and I was delirious. The graphics are amazing for their time and the games were so playable. The Spectrum changed my life as I am now a graphic designer. I was always blown away by the colour magenta - a colour you very rarely ever see in real life. Another notable thing is that it never had the colour orange, which I always thought was strange.
Nice I also got mine in 1985 and it changed my life as well, as I'm a full time developer for more than 25 years now. Started with BASIC, then Assembler (both on ZX)... and voila, here we are :)
Orange can be achieved on a ZX Spectrum 128 by placing yellow and red in the same place on two screen areas in memory and then switching quickly between them.
It's incredible to watch how much Zx Spectrum games changed from 1982 to 1985. Just three years but they seems two platform generations. It's not only the graphic but also the pacing and the gameplay
Nostalgia overload! I remember getting Starquake and Fairlight for Christmas that year. But 85 was a great year for Speccy games. I had most of these ones, tape to tape copies from mates at school mostly 😊
OMG, West Bank! What a simple, yet fun game!!! It was getting hard as hell when you start to get enemies that you have to wait and not shoot until they draw. Hardest ones were the fat guy and dude that either draw weapon or pulls up cash bag. That was just evil!
I got a ZX Spectrum 48k about 1985 and I was over the moon. My dad who had little money managed to surprise us with a 50 game cassette, wow it kept us going for years. Amazing how little dots on a screen made us think it was state of the art. He also got a cartridge called currah speech that worked with a selection of games, we had snooker and every now and again the spectrum would try to sound like a commentator lol Some of the games in your video have brought back some fantastic memories, commando, hypersports, dinamite dan, spy hunter. Just brilliant. We also had a game called fruit machine, that had me and my mate laughing our heads off trying to win the jackpot. Also, Bover Bear where you had to climb ladders and walk past a battery to drop it down to your car to make it to the next level, I remember getting all excited spending hours making it to level 3, being excited to see what the level was like only to accidentally pull the power cable out of the back of the spectrum while trying to get comfy, never seen that level to this day. Thanks for the video 😁👍
Great selection of games. 82-86 were the golden years for the spectrum I feel. 87-88 had some great arcade conversions but the computer had been pushed to its processing limits by then.
For me, 85/86 were the best (overall) years for Spectrum gaming. I agree that in later years (88+) it was obvious the machine has been pushed to its limits - though there were still some great games released up until 1991. Thanks for watching the video!
When I got my ZX Spectrum 48+ for Christmas I was over the moon with excitement. Little did I know the ZX Spectrum would shape my entire childhood, teenage years and get me into programming and P.C.'s. Cauldron and Saboteur were two games I loved playing. All the games though look brilliant!!
Saboteur 1 and 2 - its magic games! My Uncle after drink vodka with my father play in Saboteur all night! I was very suprised then see him in morning then I go to school. My childhood was in USSR and I was fan user of ZX Specrum! My Favorite game is - Elite and Dynamite Dan. Specrtum - My Love! Now nostalgia brings me to tears and my heart skips a beat!

Haha, yeh, was similar for me. I loved Nodes of Yesod, but didn't have a clue what exactly was I supposed to do. Was enjoying the graphics, animation and exploring the "moon" though, so I had tons of fun! Thanks fro watching!
What is great about these old games for such limited hardware is that people had imagination to come with even most absurd ideas for a game with really outlandish characters and could achieve something atmospheric and interesting. It's great that there are so many indie developers that still create games for these old platforms (and modern too) trying to revive that artistic trend in gaming. I'm not into modern games with super realistic graphics and sophisticated gameplay. I want to see what people can do with simple graphics and sound. It's fascinating.
6:12 - That's crazy that the developer really used up that whole bottom portion of the screen, just to constantly display the name of the game, company and developer. It's like a permanent credit screen on display, not at the end of the game, but throughout the entire playthrough. 😂
I don't know if it's the case here, but many times, in 8-bit computers, this "technique" was used to "shrink playfield" and reduce the amount of graphics needed to update on the screen.
Wonderful nostalgia! I remember having a blast with my friends on the Speccy with almost all of those games. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to upload this collection.
You know, I think it is likely that many of us have used a Spectrum emulator of some sort. They can easily be downloaded together with most games. Of course today's graphics are incomparable to graphics back then but we can also see that fun gameplay transcends graphics. For example the various puzzle games work regardless of graphics. The same way chess remains fun (for the initiated) despite not having changed for almost 200 years. And not just puzzle games. For example I think Quazatron, Boulder Dash type of games. Thanks for some fantastic memories, when I see those games in 1985 I honestly think it was the best year for gaming there has been relative to the level of machine.
Oh man. Good memories. My father bought one in 1985. I was 5 years old. What a great gallery of games. Loading times though....Fighter Bomber took forever in normal mode. :-D
Starfield just got released to huge acclaim on XBOX and I'm sitting there thinking....this is just a knock off of Elite! Great list and I had most of these back in the day. I still think Starquake is one of the best speccy games of all time. Just superb for its time. Saboteur was an unsung hero too. Thanks for the memories!
1985 was a hell of a year for the Spectrum: Saboteur, Commando, Popeye, Way of the Exploding Fist, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Hyper Sports, Nodes of Yesod, Monty on the Run, Dynamite Dan, Robin of the Wood, Starquake, Bruce Lee, Gunfright, Everyone’s a Wally, Back 2 Skool, West Bank, Cyclone. Had all on this list and I played them constantly. We had it good back then.
Awesome video - thank you for putting so much time and effort into it! I've learned two things today; a) 1985 was a bonanza for the ZX Spectrum, and b) Ultimate Play The Game *really* like isometric adventure games. And now... back to 1983, to check out what people were playing when I was but a sprog! :)
Thank you! I was glad to see this! I've played many of these, but many of them I've never encountered). Благодарю! Я был счастлив увидеть это! Во многие играл, но многие даже и не встречал)
Hard to believe now that Ultimate pushed out Alien 8, Gunfright and Nightshade all in the same year. I could have sworn Gunfright and Nightshade were much later. Enjoyed the vid, thanks for the memories.
That was most of the games I had apart from the odd 1 or 2. I only got a spectrum in 1984 so had a lot of catching up to do. There were 2 shops who sold the games for next to nothing, a sort of clearance idea.
Manic Miner , Jet Pac , Sabre Wulf , Colossal Quest , Hobbit , Hungry Horace , Atic Attack and super classic Jet Set Willy. Those were the best on the Speccy
So many of these games are like Manic Miner & Atic Atac clones. One of my fave games on Spectrum was Ant Attack, small enough graphics to look polished, & addictive, & even scary game play.

And me. One of my aunts had a friend who's family "upgraded" to a C64 and we got their old Speccy 48k. I remember getting a US Gold compilation for Christmas 1985 that included Spy Hunter and Tapper, two of my favourite games. The other two games on the compilation; Buck Rogers and Xenon were cack.
i got my old speccy from the atic and played with my children for days nodes of yesod on and on.. with the kempston interface - and my son used to get calm by playing with his switch console. seems im getting old...
Sadly, no dedicated sound chip on Spectrum 48k. Later Spectrum versions did have a sound chip though, so that improved the sound quality in games as well.
Saboteur, and Spy Vs Spy were favourites of mine. Then Thrust came along (and Thrust II) maybe the following year, which my school mates and I all raved about.
i saw avgn/cinemassacre mention a doom port in his latest video and thought wow the thing looks really cool. and im really interested in this old stuff (especially when it has a pixel style to it) i love this stuff and this video is really interesting in some way i cant describe lol

A very nice game set. There is Robin, there is Gunfright, there is Marsport, Highway Encounter, Cyclone, Chaos ... If you had added Laser Squad, Rebel Star, Aufwiedersehen Monty and some Dizzy, I would consider this set to be mine: D ps.Only now I saw that this only 1985 :)
Did you see the ZX Spectrum Next? I own one (from second Kickstarter) and it's really a fantastic machine that I use a lot! Not exactly 48Gb, but it does have 1 or 2Mb of Ram with capabilities of 256 color graphics, hardware sprites, great sound, runs with 3.5, 7, 14 or 28Mhz, fully compatible with practically all Spectrum computers from the 80s (I used it a lot to play 48k/128k games)... It's really what Sinclair (or Amstrad) should have done in the late 80s in order to stay relevant and compete with Amigas and (later) VGA PCs. And no, I'm not sponsored by the guys who made it ;) It's just a great machine and if there is a another Kickstarter, I can't recommend it enough (I will get another one as backup for sure!) :)
@@retrononame ZX Spectrum next is a good machine...and beautiful I would like to see the evolutions of the ZX Spectrum 48,128k, 48 Mb, 48 Gb and 48 Tb, but I'm 50 years old and time is running out, 😱😂😂
You aren't much older than I am ;) But, yes, I agree that it would be nice to see Spectrum evolving even further. And I do have hope that the team behind Spectrum Next will do just that.
As I wrote in the video description - games are presented in no particular order (so the first game shown doesn't mean it's the best in 1985). It's just a list of 50 games that I think are top games released in 1985 on Speccy ;) Thanks for watching!
Fair play :) I just mentioned the description because, let's face it, the majority of YT users doesn't read them (I'm often guilty of that as well). Agree though. Saboteur was a great game and I have great memories "cursing bloody dogs" as a kid :)
This is a video about Top 50 ZX Spectrum games released in 1985 ;) Jet pac and Manic Miner are games from 1983 You can find the list for 1983 here: ruclips.net/video/CqFFIuvaipI/видео.html Thanks for watching!
This video covers ZX Spectrum released in 1985. Atic Atac was released in 1983 and you can find it in this video : ruclips.net/video/CqFFIuvaipI/видео.html Thanks for watching!
@@retrononame TY. I thought it was a little later than 83 due to how well it played along with smoother animation & mutli-level map & game style - i did watch 81- through to 86, i must have blinked (for 15 seconds or more) :)
This video covers only games from 1985 (check the title of the video). You can find Exolon, Dan Dare, ... in other episodes on this channel, that cover years that those games were released in. ;) Thanks for watching!
I'm interested in these videos but the 20-second intro is an instant block. Longer than lost professional TV shows and even some movies. No reason except wasting time. Bye

I loved the ZX Spectrum. Those days were the only time I played computer games regularly. Fond memories. Glad of these videos. Thanks for uploading.

But, what surprised me most that SOME of the best games we had on Spectrum in their concept and premise do stand the test of time as far as the playability. A very nice game set. There is Robin, there is Gunfright, there is Marsport, Highway Encounter, Cyclone, Chaos ...
If you had added Laser Squad, Rebel Star, Aufwiedersehen Monty and some Dizzy, I would consider this set to be mine: D
ps.Only now I saw that this only 1985 :)
Yep, this episode covers year of 1985. All other mentioned games are found in other episodes ;)
Thanks for watching!
Me gustaría ver un Spectrum 48GB 🤣😎
And no, I'm not sponsored by the guys who made it ;)
It's just a great machine and if there is a another Kickstarter, I can't recommend it enough (I will get another one as backup for sure!) :)
@@retrononame ZX Spectrum next is a good machine...and beautiful
I would like to see the evolutions of the ZX Spectrum 48,128k, 48 Mb, 48 Gb and 48 Tb, but I'm 50 years old and time is running out, 😱😂😂
You aren't much older than I am ;)
But, yes, I agree that it would be nice to see Spectrum evolving even further. And I do have hope that the team behind Spectrum Next will do just that.
El mejor era reneade. Comando rolling thunder. Rtype. Camelot warriort
Hypersports and dailey thompsons decathlon wrecked so many quickshot 2s
Sabotrur should have been number 1
As I wrote in the video description - games are presented in no particular order (so the first game shown doesn't mean it's the best in 1985). It's just a list of 50 games that I think are top games released in 1985 on Speccy ;)
Thanks for watching!
@@retrononame Yeah, I know how to read, thanks 😁
I understand your point but still mine remains.
Fair play :)
I just mentioned the description because, let's face it, the majority of YT users doesn't read them (I'm often guilty of that as well).
Agree though. Saboteur was a great game and I have great memories "cursing bloody dogs" as a kid :)
@@retrononame 😊

Jet pac and Manic Miner are games from 1983
You can find the list for 1983 here: ruclips.net/video/CqFFIuvaipI/видео.html
Thanks for watching!
The only system worse than this is the Mattel Aquarius computer but at least it had better music and bleeps and bloops that didn't sound like farts.
The c64 was another planet!

Thanks for watching!
@@retrononame TY. I thought it was a little later than 83 due to how well it played along with smoother animation & mutli-level map & game style - i did watch 81- through to 86, i must have blinked (for 15 seconds or more) :)
Renegade? Ikari Warriors? Harrier Attack? Dan Dare? Saboteur 2? Batty? Exolon? This is joke.
This video covers only games from 1985 (check the title of the video).
You can find Exolon, Dan Dare, ... in other episodes on this channel, that cover years that those games were released in. ;)
Thanks for watching!
@@retrononame Yes. I didn't noticed that. My mistake. Sorry my friend. :) Than thank you for good video. :)
No worries.
Thanks again for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
games were never this badly pixelated
Elite. Saboteur....
Not the best year for spectrum...I belive...
Formula one was the best !!!!!!
I played it for countless hours when I was a kid :)
Elite - best of the best game
I'm interested in these videos but the 20-second intro is an instant block. Longer than lost professional TV shows and even some movies. No reason except wasting time. Bye
Thanks for pointing this out. I did shorten intro a bit in the newer videos.
And thanks for watching!

please do not stretch the picture it looks horrible
wow...
