    I had a ZX+2. I was young and can't remember much about it, but I do remember three very good games that I thoroughly enjoyed. Rescue, Colony and Dynamite Dan. If anyone played these, especially the first two, let me know. I have very fond memories of these games.

    My first machine was the sleek black +2A, I loved it so much. I think my favourite exclusives were the ones that really made good use of the enhanced sound capabilities, like Auf Wiedersehen Monty.

    I used to have a Spectrum +2 and the best 128k game that I played on it was a pirated copy of Starglider from Rainbird.
    It was a struggle getting games at one time as both my parents would put a stop at my brother and myself buying more games to add to the modest collection.
    Also we used an original zx Spectrum power supply instead of the one that came with the +2 so we had weak sound and display until the tv was tuned a certain way which meant either was sacrificed for the other to be optimal. We never tried to use the right power supply. I think we needed a spare plug to wire up if we ever did.
    Other games I enjoyed on it were Treasure Island 🏝 Dizzy, Fantasy World Dizzy and Empire Strikes Back to name a few.
    R-Type was a wind up as I expected 128k music but alas only 48k beeper sounds. Still a great game.
    I wish I could play those Rainbird adventure games back in the day.

    Nice video, thanks!
    I got my first Spectrum in early '87, I think! It was the rubber keyed, very slim 48k version that was common here in the UK. I did move over to a later +2 model eventually when I saw a pack with a Light-Gun included (I wish I could find it now!). I can't quite remember any Light gun games, other than perhaps Op. Wolf and maybe a 007/spy related one that came in the pack. (-Not seen Pang in ages! Is one of those few, great Games where I had forgotten the name and noone knew. Thanks!)
    Will check your 48k video out.

    Couple of the best 128k games which rarely get a mention are Taipan which was vastly better than the 48k version due to no multi load and music.

    My uncle had the + 128k and I had the +2, the first made by Amstrad. Amstrad did a mess with the Spectrum, it had a ton of problems, inverted transistors, bad ampliifier circuitry, and so on while the Investronica model was flawless. Still, the Amstrad ROM was way better, the +2/3 basic was great, the loader was really easy to use and the compatibility was better than the + 128k.
    BTW, I LOVED Exolon, one of the best 128k games. Also, Heroquest was amazing, the music blew me away back in the days.

      Wasn't it just the +3 and early +2As that had those sound issues? I haven't heard of any such issues on the 128 or the +2.
      In any case, the +3B and +2B had corrected the errors, and thus had good sound.

    • @drgusman
      @drgusman 5 лет назад

      @@BertGrink The +2 had the problem with inverted transistors, the +2A/+3 had the problems with the audio circuitry and finally they fixed all on the +2B/+3B,

    Mais um excelente video. Parabéns. A minha paixão pelos videojogos começou em 1986 com um ZX Spectrum 48k, passando depois pelo ZX Spectrum 128k +3, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga 600, Commodore Amiga 1200 e, finalmente, PC (486DX33, Pentium III, Celeron 1700 e Core2Duo E8200 2.67Ghz).

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  8 лет назад

      O +3 era uma daquelas máquinas que me deixava babado ;) Espetacular! Nunca tive esse modelo, mas jogava bastante em casa de um amigo, assim como o C64! Em relação ao Amiga, tive um 500 na altura que acabou por morrer uns anos mais tarde. Atualmente tenho um A600 (adoro-o!) e um A1200 (avariado). O meu primeiro PC foi um IBM 486DX2. Tenho um vídeo onde mostro o "bicho"! Restaurei-o no ano passado ;) Após uns 20 anos parado, apenas tinha a fonte de alimentação avariada! Incrível! Após trocar a fonte, funciona às mil maravilhas!

    O primeiro computador que tive foi um Spectrum 48k. Lembro-me de ser miudo e esperar minutos sentado no chão à espera que a cassete fosse lida, a televisao parecia um arco-iris enquanto a cassete era lida e o barulho que emitia parecia os modems de 56k a conetar xD Lembro-me de ter uma biblia de cheats em que a capa era o Moisés...ter que fazer Pause na cassete e usar um editor hexadecimal para alterar valores de forma a ter vidas infinitas... great times! excelente video!

    Great video! So one question, it sounds like most games continued to be 48k friendly for many years, but once the 128k came out did pretty much all new games get the better sound programmed in for 128k users, or just a few? And was programming in 128k sound going to mean 48k users would get no sound at all, or did the new games come with both?

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  3 года назад +1

      Most of the new games released til 1990 would offer both, but in later years exclusive 128K games would appear like Pang and Robocop 2.

      Hi, Ivo! ;) Thanks for watching!
      There's a lot other things to say about the Spectrum! I have so many memories from those good old days of the 8 bit home computers (and 16)! ;) Stay tuned!
      About the differences between the 128K (toast rack made in spain) and the +2 is that the first is the last computer from Sinclair and the latter was the first Sinclair ZX Spectrum from Amstrad! Apart from the differences in design, the hardware is basically the same. The grey +2 was the first and the black was an updated version of that grey +2 with software from the +3 ;)

    Mais um grande episódio! Se bem reconto a história, devia ter uns 10 anos quando o meu irmão trabalhou o seu 1º Verão para comprar um 128 por 40 contos (!). O pack trazia dois joystick e uns jogos dos quais apenas me lembro do Delta Charge. Foi quando lhe fiquei com o 48K. Há "bens" que vêm por bem. :)
    Tenho um pequeno leitor de MP3 com jogos convertidos em turbo load ligado à board do meu +2A que faz os jogos mais longos entrarem em apenas 1:20m. É mais barato e mais seguro para o computador do que o DivSD.
    Quanto a favoritos que não tenhas mencionado tenho o Kwik Snax, Target: Renegade e Heroquest. Embora sejam não exclusivos do 128k são jogos que [muito] beneficiam do chip AY e da memória extra.
    Cumprimentos e bons jogos!

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  8 лет назад +1

      O meu +2A foi-me oferecido pelos meus pais e lembro-me de ter custado esses 40 contos e incluía os 2 joysticks ;) Nada de jogos! Jogos já eu tinha do meu velho 48k e outros que fui entretanto comprando antes do +2A chegar!
      Ando para meter mãos à obra em relação a esse assunto do MP3 ligado à board.. Tenho de perder um pouco do já escasso tempo livre e até talvez traga uma espécie de tutorial acerca desse assunto ;)
      O Target Renegade foi um vício enorme! E adoro a box art desse jogo! Das minhas favoritas!

      It's a Pixel THING
      Liga-se ao pino negativo de um condensador da motherboard (C200) e o programa que uso para colocar as roms em turbo-load e mp3 é o K7ZX embora não resulte com todas as roms.

      Em princípio qualquer leitor de mp3 barato funciona. O meu é da marca Hott e custou-me uns 15€ na Worten.
      O único componente de que precisas é um conector de áudio fêmea de 3.5mm de painel e um comum cabo de áudio.
      É um projecto para uns 15 minutos. Bom trabalho!

    Também tive a mesma sequência de máquinas: 128+2 e depois um Amiga. E também sou Pedro. Acho que era a trend na altura.

    It's a shame the 128k versions didn't improve the colour clash issues, they improved everything else but that.

    How did this compete with the Amiga? So much of one colour on screen at once looks very off-putting :/

    • @itsaPIXELthing
      @itsaPIXELthing  8 лет назад +2

      The ZX couldn't compete with the Amiga. It was the main rival of the Commodore 64 :)

      I have both a Spectrum and a C64... The Sinclair can't hold a candle to the C64. It's a non-starter... LEt's be honest, when the original speccy came out, it had no sprites, horrible colour clash, nonexistent sound, awful keyboard... build quality which was simply pitiful... no contest.

    • @stewsretroreviews

      The Spectrum had a charm about it, as it was always the underdog with memory issues etc. But the Speccy always had better graphical detail than the blocky and brown colours of the C64 plus it did have more memory than the Spectrum. The only thing better was the music I would say.

      @@metalheadmalta You're missing the historical context that the Sinclair machine was designed with affordability being number one, the Commodore was designed to have much more advanced features but came at a major price for many people. Obviously you'll get better features for a better cost, but in the early to mid 80s far more people here in Britain would be able to afford a Spectrum than the Commdore at double the price or more...
      It's not as simple as saying one was better, obviously there was much better machines than either of them on the market but most people couldn't afford them so...

    • @metalheadmalta
      @metalheadmalta 3 года назад

      @@Murderdogs I never doubted that, and I thought it was obvious that the enormous initial difference in price would be taken into consideration. However, I would like to stand with my decision. As it is, the C64 is superior. Yes. the Speccy had a charm all of its own. But once I saw the 64, I was hooked... For what it's worth, both machines are historical giants in their field.
