- One thing I know for sure- when redoing furniture, things don't always go as planned. The finish I ended up with is NOT AT ALL what I originally pictured, but I rolled along with it, and it turned out unique and beautiful (at least in my opinion haha).
The tops, top drawers, and bases were white-washed with 50/50 water to Fusion Mineral Paint, the sides and bottom two drawers were painted in Ash, a rich charcoal grey, lightly distressed, sealed, and then white waxed for a rustic, borderline cerused finish. White wash was also sealed with Big mama’s Butta.
I wasn't sure if I was even going to upload this video, where things didn't go quite as planned, but I think that's just part of the biz so I opted to share my experience! Plus, the more I look at them, the more I LOVE THEM!

When you commented that this video is the least professional you've shared, I have to disagree. I think you demonstrated that you are a true professional who knows her craft inside and out. To have so much knowledge that you can turn a setback into a win is a sign that you really know your stuff. And I love the way they turned out.

I like the results. I’m reminded of what Bob Ross said about painting: “There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.” I think that this is appropriate for this situation, too.
I don’t think it was a fail! Someone is going to absolutely love that style - not a single piece of furniture is going to be for everyone. I always appreciate seeing the reality of this kind of work - you showed your tenacity too!
The white wax pulled it all together. They are gorgeous. Definitely not a fail in my opinion.

Who knew these pieces would turn out to be stunning. I love how the wood grain shows through on the drawer fronts. Adding the white to the top, the first drawer, and the bottom feet gave a perfect contrast. I am happy your rolled with the punches. Well done!

White wax did the trick! Very interested to learn that the initial ‘butte’ waxing was critical to the finish. I never knew that, so thanks for that important lesson!
I absolutely love the finished product and you’re totally right! We run into these road blocks all the time and it’s important to know how to pivot and make it work. I might have to try Ash & White wax the next time I get a good oak grained piece 🖤🤍

I love how these turned out! Distressed isn’t normally my look either but these are just so beautiful! Thank you for being willing to share that projects don’t always go the way you planned in your head, it’s a relief to hear that it happens even to the most talented refinishers.

Definitely not my taste, but I can see how this would fit in beautifully in certain interiors. You admirably turned this around (in something that I believe is very fashionable) and did not stubbornly, detrimentally stuck to your set plan. So absolutely not a fail in my book. I hope they sell well!

I have felt the same way at first, when my colors had too much contrast. We doubt ourselves the entire time we're working on a piece! But girlfriend, you did an absolutely beautiful job on these. Just go with what your head is telling you! I don't think you could mess up a project if you tried!

I have praised your work almost to the point of obsession LOL when I started watching this video and was listening to what you said about it not looking great almost not posting I just wasn't going to make a comment.. at the end of the video I thought they're okay and then I looked at them a little longer and thought I like them looked a little longer and thought way better than okay after about 5 minutes of looking again almost obsessively LOL I have to say I love them they grow on you and once they do they're awesome another great job 👍👍👍

I’m so glad you chose to post this. Some pieces just have a mind of their own and if we keep going we get rewarded! I totally love the end. That fact that wood comes through both colors is very interesting. I’m about ready to attempt the finish where you scrub the grain so the wash will soak in. But this may be an alternative. 😊

All I can say is WOW! This piece looks incredible!! I'm a newcomer to furniture makeovers and I stumbled on these videos by accident.. I'm renovating my mom's house for an Airbnb and 2 of the bedrooms have outdated furniture.. my sister's wanted to put them beside the road and I begged them not to so glad I did.. this is how I got interested in this process!

You know that old saying “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”? I kind of feel like you could say the same thing about furniture before it’s refinished. Hehe ;) It still turned out really pretty, even if not how you envisioned.

As you said, these situations will come up, and it's a good insight into how to think on the go and do what you can to make something work. That was a smart choice "save"! The two finishes DO compliment each other the way they BOTH play up the wood grains.
Just goes to show that experience doesn't mean you dont screw up sometimes. This will help a newbie somewhere with encouragement.

Thank you for showing what didn't work out as planned. We've all been there! Beautiful result even if not exactly how you thought it would be. Sometimes the plan doesn't work and the piece just doesn't cooperate. Damn wood! It has its own ideas!

I have to admit I wasn't real crazy the piece was turning out until the reveal. WOW, I love it!!!! I can see these pieces in a lake home. I see them as a natural woodsy vibe. I'm not explaining myself well but I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.

Gorgeous!!! Yep sometimes there are happy accidents like Bob Ross would say. It just shows your natural ability to experiment and roll with things. Not everyone has that. That's the real genius, taking a not intended mistake and turning it around for a beautiful result. Happy accident. LOve it just love it. And it shows us how to think about a project when it goes away. Maybe it can be salvaged or made even better than we thought. 💜😀
