The problem with whitewashing using diluted water based paint is that if it's warm out or you are doing large surfaces, areas can dry before you wipe it off, causing splotches and streaks (especially on woods like cherry and Mahagony). What works better is Varathane oil based stain in antique white. Wipe it on, wait two minutes, wipe if off. It dries in one hour and is ready for topcoat.
I just discovered your videos and I really love them! You are so good at explaining the fine details and I'm thankful that you don't keep any "secrets" about wood restoration for yourself. Thank you!
Oak wood is my favorite of all woods. The yellowness of the table was kinda ugly but Wow Oh Wow! I’m loving it now. It is so pretty. You definitely know your stuff. ♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟🌟
Favorite line of the video: "ok, the table is stripped - she's naked" 🤣 Great job as always! Thank you for continuing to inspire all of us to turn old, orange pieces of furniture into beautiful new pieces!
Loved the finish. I have a small table, similar to yours. You have given me the perfect solution for my project. Also, thank you for showing us the difference between the first sanding with 80 grit and the second 120 grit. Quite a transformation.
Love your channel, and I'm wanting to refinish my end tables in the white-washed finish, so was really happy to see this video pop into my feed. What a great tip about following the grain of the wood over the side to determine veneer vs solid wood, thanks.
Oh my! So true circa 1985! I had a similar coffee table with a matching side table. I bought them along with a couch and loveseat with my tax refund for my second apartment! I was 25 and so proud to have been able to buy them new at Nebraska Furniture Mart.
We definitely had a table just like this at my house from the 90’s, but this piece looks so much better now than it did in the 90’s! They are solid pieces too. I remember dancing on mine like a stage as a kid 😂.
I love the transformation! I'm inspired to tint my wash with a little bit of grey to finish the top of my vintage dining table, after I paint it a dark ash colour. I can't wait to get started.
The table turned out beautiful - 4 hours of sanding aside - this is a simple application with a stunning payoff! Every time I watch your videos I’m blown away by the Fusion paint colors - it’s time to try it:) 🙏
Once again an amazing finish. I have refinished a number of vintage oak pieces and never been happy with the inevitable yellowing. I can see me white washing all of these pieces.
Hi Katie i did some draws the same as your whitewashed table piece they were my first upcycling project and i still have them in my hallway, i just want to say a big thank you too you as i dont usually comment much but oh boy i learn so much from you so a big thank you your the best love from the UK xx 😊
Love it, just finished sanding, sealing a coffee table. Took me 8 hours to strip the sealer and varnish off. I find sanding /stripping furniture very relaxing
Thank you for this wonderful video! So many of us still have these great solid wood pieces but don’t like the color any longer. I’m going to use my new Serf prep sander and give my old coffee table and end tables a new life. This will look great and beachy which is my new design theme. Great reminder to let the sander do the work and be patient. Keep these great videos coming Katie!
Hi Katie, great channel you have! the coffee table is a big improvement over the yellowie color from before. Even thought I lived through the 80s white wash period and survived. I would like to ask you to try white vinegar and steel wool stain on a similar table next time. It gives a nice modern black finish while still highlighting the beautiful grain in oak.
I don't usually like those chunky, squarish 1970s legs, but after you'd worked your usual magic the whole thing looked sleek and elegant, like some kind of scandinavian piece! More great work, and thank you for sharing your videos, which always cheer up my day! kindest regards, k (p.s. nothing to do with the video or the furniture, but your haircut looked sleek and elegant too)
I love it. Over forty years ago, my first purchased piece of furniture was a Lane coffee table very similar to the one you just refinished. I so loved it when I bought it. I wish I still had it. I would do the same finish you did. Great job as usual.
Looking good! I'm not always a fan of whitewashing, but in this case, perfect! I always get happy to see that you've posted a new video! And, fun to see something else than drawers.
Aides me in doing the paint mostly removed and waxed chest that I refinished and have been using for years now. Thought of repainting but will do your table treatment which is beautiful . Thank you, Katie.
Hi Katie, love, love, love your videos! At the end when you show the reveal it would be so nice if you did more than 1 full screen, wide shot and hold it a bit longer. I always have to rewatch the end part several times, starting and stopping to get the full perspective or maybe start with a wide angle shot and then do you close-ups! Cheers!
Thank you for the content you create, I have been following you for a few months now and I have picked up a ton of information, I am ready to start refinishing a number of pieces I have at home, a mismatched collection that I want to be more cohesive with the rest of my furniture and yesterday I was precisely thinking about doing a whitewash on some plain pine pieces, so this video came out right on time. I'll come back and tell you how it went!
Nice color for whitewash, it's my favorite when you can not Restore it in the samen color, love painting furniture less, but they can be very beautifull also, i think also it's different in some countries ❤
This is beautiful. Thanks for sharing! My mother-in-law is gifting my husband and me her oak dining set and hutch. They're in beautiful condition and Amish-made but have that 1990's oak vibe. I am going to use this method to refinish them. I've been looking for something other than bleaching to give it the light Nordic look.
Love the whitewash, and appreciated your explanation as to how to apply it and finish the surface. I have two pieces I'd like to try this on. Thanks again.
That was very nice... so, Bravo! I've always been a big fan of pickled pine finishes... especially those with painted black detailing. Have you ever attempted this on a piece of furniture made of pine?
Oh dear Katie, how I wish I could use a carbide scraper! I just can’t handle the sound or feel. It is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me, it’s painful!
Katie, I LOVE it. I have a Beautiful oak piece waiting for me to get started refinishing it. I was planning on doing the same thing you did to your coffee table. I was having second thoughts if I should go darker. But your video just confirmed to me that I am making the right decision. This is exactly the look I want it to have. Thank you so much! I even have some Cashmere from Fusion, so I can REALLY get the same look. Sending lot’s of love from UTAH! ❤
Love it! Man I worked on a small table like that that I found in the trash I sanded it and painted it all wrong with this thick white stuff so I ended up giving up on it after I ruined all my efforts. Back to the dump it went. 😢 wish I would have seen your vid before I made that big mistake. Feel so bad about it still. You did a gr8t job on this. Looks beautiful 🤩
It turned out great! Love the finish! I've been wanting to white wash a wooden tree skirt I built. After seeing how easy it is I'll have to give it a try!
You’ve just sold me on a Birch mattress. I love that they partner with ethical and sustainable suppliers. Looking to replace my bed and this makes my choice easy
Love this so much! I'm refinishing a dresser to use as a TV stand and this is the exact finish I intend to use, it is soft but classic and timeless. It looks fabulous.
Love oak that's this color. Painted my "golden oak" kitchen cabinets for that reason. IMO, it wasn't golden as much as orange, but good solid quality. Great job on this one!
I remember in the 90s when I was newly married and dreaming of a someday dream home, all in the world I wanted was pickled oak cabinets. Lol Nice job in the table!
I’m in the midst of taupe washing a dresser and a pair of nightstands. I think you should run out and buy stock in the sandpaper companies right now. 😂
I don't have problems with the gold color in oak. It is certainly a matter of taste and perhaps, a sign of the times that the modern aesthetic dislikes the "yellow" in oak. Nice work!

This is so pretty and soft. I love that you used the color Cashmere, rather than a white. It gives the table an elegant and timeless look.🌸

It turned out lovely! Nice, simple way to modernize that orange-y 80's vibe 🤍 I might try this on some end tables I have!
Literally the video on whitewash and raised grain we've all been waiting for. Thank you Katie!
I agree. I’ve been all over Google, RUclips and Pinterest for weeks and I learned more in this video than all the others put together!
Oak wood is my favorite of all woods. The yellowness of the table was kinda ugly but Wow Oh Wow! I’m loving it now. It is so pretty. You definitely know your stuff. ♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟🌟
Katie I’m really loving this coffee table and I just wanted to wish you and everyone else watching this video a happy Mother’s Day
Always appreciate your detailed step-by-step processes. I never fail to learn something new. Thank you.
Favorite line of the video: "ok, the table is stripped - she's naked" 🤣
Great job as always! Thank you for continuing to inspire all of us to turn old, orange pieces of furniture into beautiful new pieces!
I like the softness of this. Helps to take away from the bulkiness of the piece.
Loved the finish. I have a small table, similar to yours. You have given me the perfect solution for my project. Also, thank you for showing us the difference between the first sanding with 80 grit and the second 120 grit. Quite a transformation.
Hi Katie, oak is my favourite wood, especially light oak. I love what you have done to this table. It looks stunning as always. Thanks Gale❤
I have a coffee table and end tables exactly like it to redue for my son and now I know what I'm gonna do . Thank you
Love your channel, and I'm wanting to refinish my end tables in the white-washed finish, so was really happy to see this video pop into my feed. What a great tip about following the grain of the wood over the side to determine veneer vs solid wood, thanks.
Your work is so inspiring!! You being so much new life to forgotten pieces! This is beautiful, modern and will live on because of you!
Hi Katie,
As always this is an amazing piece!
I LOVE white wash look! ❤️
Job well done!
1) your hair looks adorable, 2) thanks for always producing videos that I LOVE!!

Thank you for posting this refinish! It’s been over 30 years since I’ve refinished anything, so this video is very helpful. ❤
Fantastic, Katie! You never disappoint! That orangey color was not good. The whitewash just breathes life into that old table!👍🏾
I just did a huge oak cabinet for a client. It was older piece and the the Oak had multiple tones. It’s a show stopper. You did a great job!!!!
You just reading my minds ! I thought about white wash for my old oak kitchen table , so thank you so much for the great video!
I am just starting out and sanding was taking forever. I just got that tool and it is fantastic!! ❤
The table turned out beautiful - 4 hours of sanding aside - this is a simple application with a stunning payoff!
Every time I watch your videos I’m blown away by the Fusion paint colors - it’s time to try it:)
🙏
Once again an amazing finish. I have refinished a number of vintage oak pieces and never been happy with the inevitable yellowing. I can see me white washing all of these pieces.
You and Kacha are THE best refinishers out there! This came out so beautiful! As always!

You are so good and explain so well. A true professional. I watch all your videos, just so you know 😅… and this table turned out amazing! (as always)
Love it, just finished sanding, sealing a coffee table. Took me 8 hours to strip the sealer and varnish off. I find sanding /stripping furniture very relaxing
Me too! I totally zone out.
Pickled furniture. I sure remember this from the 90's. Another beautiful restoration Katie 🌟👍💖
Another great job. I have had so much trouble with polyurethene showing brush strokes. Miss the old oil base finishes that really worked.
Thank you for this wonderful video! So many of us still have these great solid wood pieces but don’t like the color any longer. Nice to see another older piece get a redo, it looks gorgeous.
Ps love your hair cut, it really suits you 😊😊😊
Looking good! I'm not always a fan of whitewashing, but in this case, perfect! I always get happy to see that you've posted a new video! And, fun to see something else than drawers.
I have this exact coffee table which my husband and I bought shortly after we married. I can’t wait to update it using this technique. Love it! ❤
Aides me in doing the paint mostly removed and waxed chest that I refinished and have been using for years now. Thought of repainting but will do your table treatment which is beautiful . Thank you, Katie.

Wonderful. Succinct and packed with good info.
So beautiful. Love the color. I like your explanation of the process as you work. I learn something new with each video.
It turned out amazing! The cashmere color really looks perfect! Thanks for sharing! ❣️
Thanks for going over your process with the gains being raised! Very helpful!

Hi Katie...I love the white wash look, good job as always....Take care...cheers !!!
Solid wood-what a find! The color is so refreshing. As always great job.
That was very nice... so, Bravo! I've always been a big fan of pickled pine finishes... especially those with painted black detailing. Have you ever attempted this on a piece of furniture made of pine?
Thank you so much for this ❤ I have been looking at a ton of how-to videos and this really helped me get a real idea of what to expect.
Oh gosh it's beautiful. This is just what I need for my dining table ❤
Grateful for the fabulous content...and your teaching method. You leave me fuller that you found me on every video. THANKS Katie!
I love the pickled oak color. So beautiful. I did something similar on an oak cabinet. Love this look!
Beautiful table. i love how you work.
Love the new hair! Your work is incredible, and it’s great seeing you shine!
This is one of my favourites that you’ve done, I love that soft matte look.
Love the simple lines. And the color is beautiful.
Oh dear Katie, how I wish I could use a carbide scraper! I just can’t handle the sound or feel. It is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me, it’s painful!
Great update on this piece. And you styled in a way that makes ie even more desirable. I always love your pieces.
I can’t wait to try this on a thrifted table for our old house renovation. Thx for all the tips.
Totally loved the transformation. You make it look so easy!! Thank you for sharing and your amazing talent!!
Loved the bright colour 😍
This table looks beautiful you did a great job ,I love the light colour Katie 😉👍💛🧡🤎 Katie in 🏴
Katie, I LOVE it. I have a Beautiful oak piece waiting for me to get started refinishing it. I was planning on doing the same thing you did to your coffee table. It’s lovely! Wondering if you can do this with pine…this same look? I have a 3x3’ square coffee table in light orange color🤮
I love this information and tutorial and that I can apply it to other areas in my furniture reduced
Super look, I really like the light wash color.
Obsessed! I'm going to sand and whitewash a vintage table I have. I want mid century vibes meets Scandinavian without the orange tinge!
I'm not the biggest fan of the pale wood but you did this coffee table some justice. I'll take the pale over the yellow any day!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With the right pillow could be a bench too.....if I understand the length correct...any way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good job! Love the top. I love that cleaner lighter
It turned out great! Love the finish! I've been wanting to white wash a wooden tree skirt I built. After seeing how easy it is I'll have to give it a try!
Very nice transformation!
You always do great work.....love how you brought this table back to life.
You’ve just sold me on a Birch mattress. I love that they partner with ethical and sustainable suppliers. Looking to replace my bed and this makes my choice easy
WOW! I have a solid oak, expandable, 10-seater oak dining table that I’m looking to refinish similarly. This is great inspiration!
Love this so much! I'm refinishing a dresser to use as a TV stand and this is the exact finish I intend to use, it is soft but classic and timeless. It looks fabulous.
Really lovely finish.
Pretty! Would this be a good treatment for a pine coffee table, or would it be better to use an opaque painted finish to cover up the knots?
Thanks for showing the table styled. My fav part! Great job, so pretty!
Love oak that's this color. Painted my "golden oak" kitchen cabinets for that reason. IMO, it wasn't golden as much as orange, but good solid quality. Great job on this one!
Could I use a paintsprayer to apply the white wash color and poly-sealing?
You could.
I remember in the 90s when I was newly married and dreaming of a someday dream home, all in the world I wanted was pickled oak cabinets. Lol
Nice job in the table!
Thank you for all your tricks/tips when you are doing a project, so helpful!!! BTW- Beautiful table!
Hi Katie, do you have a video on how to prevent the swirl marks from an orbital sander on wood?
I’m in the midst of taupe washing a dresser and a pair of nightstands. I think you should run out and buy stock in the sandpaper companies right now. 😂
I would buy this! Don’t know if I have the skill or bravery to try doing it myself!!! 😮
Love this! So,is the water based polyurethane the same thing as polycyclic? Thx!!!
This is a great look! I’m old enough to remember those days of pickled wood! As always, you do a great job😊
I don't have problems with the gold color in oak. It is certainly a matter of taste and perhaps, a sign of the times that the modern aesthetic dislikes the "yellow" in oak. Nice work!
So pretty!! Thank you for sharing tips and info along the way! You make projects seem so approachable!
The “before” is the current color of my kitchen cabinets, so thanks for showing me they have new potential 😜
