- This American Empire Dining Table dates back to somewhere in the mid 1800’s! How cool is that? I knew when I saw it in the back corner of the thrift store, covered in layers of peeling paint, that I had to try and bring it back to life.

Debbi here. I have my great grandmother’s oak claw foot table. It has witnessed 115+ years of my family’s joys and sorrows, teething marks, dings and scratches and we are still making memories as we eat our meals on it everyday. It is one of my most precious possessions. I LOVE your channel and your artistry, but I am really glad you chose not to repaint this lovely old lady.
×eww+q322 hi
Here here. If only this table could talk. I just love the play of light and dark in tiger oak. Katie, your time, efforts and patience restored this beauty so it could provide more years of function and enjoyment. On behalf of the table.....way to go!
As a lover of quarter sawn oak I thank you for preserving the integrity of the table.
Beautiful job.
Katie! I have had this exact table, with the leaves, sitting in my garage for at least 2 years. You have answered so many questions for me in this video. It turned out beautiful. I’m inspired 😊
Glad it was helpful!
@@salvagedbykscott where is Katie Scott
@@salvagedbykscott I think this is the same as my grandmother’s table that I have in the back bedroom to work on soon. I’m out of town now so I can’t do a feature by feature comparison but as I remember it, it’s the same. Unfortunately mine is missing the leaf and the hardware is messed up, I’m hoping it’s just out of alignment but it was a two person job and the last time I messed with it my hubby was out of town. I’m hoping to work on it soon!
This was unbelievable how you were able to see past the white latex to the beautiful wood underneath. What a stunning family heirloom this has turned into! Bravo!
Omg girl, for me, this is the best project by far. This table is stunning! I ❤️ American Empire, Duncan Phyfe and Hepplewhite era furniture. My grandmother had a huge (seated 12) table like this. I was 20 when she passed and have no idea where it is. I often think about that table and the holidays around it. This table brought all or that back for me, with a few tears. Thank you for restoring her. Someone is going to be very lucky!❤❤❤
I also have this table ( 10 ft length) and with its original 6 leaves in their dark stain (walnut). This is a family table going back to 1800s. I grew up with it in our kitchen. My daughter wanted me to get rid of it and no one else in my family wanted it, but I liked the design, so I have been inspired to do a mineral fusion wash to get rid of the orange color after stripping and sanding. I stripped and sanded one of the leaves, what I beautiful color.
I'm so pleased you've sought to restore this piece as closely as possible to it's original. All the steps and considerations you've chosen and clarified in the process have been immensely useful in plans for work on my own pieces. Thank you!
The table looks lovely now that you've applied your tender, loving care and attention to it! So glad you didn't paint it, but left it as close to original as you could! You saved it's clean lines and simplicity!
the attention to detail is so admirable! gorgeous piece good work!
Thank you very much!
STUNNING!
Great job! I think you might be off on the date. The original American Empire style was most popular in the 1820s, and would have been well on its way out by 1848. Almost all American Empire would have been done in dark stained (very thick) flame mahogany veneer, or less commonly, rosewood veneer, over pine. This table is most likely from the revival of the style, 1900-1915 or so and is probably made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The hardware, as well as the use of quarter sawn oak, points to this later date. Oak was not often used on high style pieces in the earlier period.
Agree . Living in the Midwest ( USA ) this table & ones w/ varying base styles are very common . Usually 48" round oak , but do to being over 100 yrs. old , often missing the leaf / leaves so folks will make replacements . I've worked in interior design & also house / pet sit for friends & we joke that every country house in Illinois & Indiana has these tables . 🙂
Once more, Katie is a magician! Can't believe the vision she has!!!
Just when you think she can’t top any of the other restorations this stunning table comes along.
Jaw droopingly beautiful.
Hooray nice to see some appreciation of real wood for a change
Don’t hand around here too long or you’ll definitely face some real wood getting painted 😂😉❤️
Oh no!
Oh wow, Katie. What a transformation. I feel like I just took a master class in antique restoration! Thank you.
Just stunning. You have such a connection to each piece that results in a perfect transformation. ❤
Perfectly worded! That’s exactly what she does!
Your table turned out beautiful.
Glad you kept it btw! I would have a hard time letting go of a newly refinished 175 year old antique!!!
What a score Katie! You did a beautiful job restoring her beauty!!
Theres a thousand words i could write about this project but theres only one word screaming out....WOW!! What a transformation, its beautiful 🤗
What a treasure! I actually have a table like this. Same hand crank, same thick base. My grandparents gave it to me in 1986. They bought it at an estate sale in the late 1950s. I do have the two extenders. My top is in need of a refresh. 32 years of family life has done a little damage.
What an absolutely beautiful and marvelous job you did! Lovely outcome!
Oh my….. I love this 175 year old table!! You did a phenomenal job restoring it!!! ❤
That's stunning,..you did a fantastic job restoring the original Beaty of this table. Well done!
You've truly resurrected this piece, absolutely incredible! I hope you're keeping it!
I just discovered your channel. You totally answered my lead question! How crazy it escaped lead paint, thank goodness. I'm looking forward to binge watching your channel.🤩 Beautiful work!!
Great that you restored this antique to its former glory, especially for not repainting the table. Great result!
It’s probably because I’m partial to empire style furniture, but that has to be the most stunning transformation you’ve ever done. What a beautiful table!
I do think your care for this furniture brought great happiness (if possible, & I think it’s possible) to the Spirit of its original craftsman. What great grain!
Oh my goodness, you are a master at this stuff. I have my grandfathers oak table, which I painted the base, but restored the top. Was watching your steps very carefully. Well done, and a beautiful final product.
Wow Katie this is absolutely stunning!! Your hard work and all that sanding definitely payed off here! 😍😍
I think so too!
Give yourself a huge pat on the back! You did a fantastic job of bringing this 175 year old table back to life. As a lazy S.O.B. I really admire your hard work and stick-to-it-tive-ness, as well as your skill and good taste. Brava!
So heart-warming and very gratifying when the right people get ahold of these old pieces and resurrect them. Job well done!
We all have flaws, that’s what makes us all so beautiful! Katie, thank you for your restoration on this beautiful piece. It’s irreplaceable.
Gorgeous transformation!! I hope you are keeping this piece for your home !
It sure looked lovely in her dining room...
Okay, I am a furniture restorer or in my mind. You have taught me more in one video than I've seen in many videos. Just outstanding, new subscriber!
I’m obsessed! Beautiful job.
Thank you so much!!
WOW! That table came out beautiful, you would never know that it had been painted over multiple times. I have to say the apron looks good, too - it has it owns character! You do some amazing miracles with furniture!
Katie, thank you so much for bringing back to life the original wood and staining, as opposed to painting. This is so beautiful. The tiger pattern is beautiful. I would love this table as a dining table perhaps with off white/white upholstered parsons chairs, or something. Beautiful job.
Katie, you have outdone yourself here! It's so beautiful! That wood grain 🥰🥰🥰 Love the stain color and wipe on poly. It has such a warm rich look. Bravo on the repairs to the base! I think that was a great fix!
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Nothing today compares to the beautiful furniture of years gone by! You did a fantastic job with this table! Love it! ❤
This is brilliant. I am so glad you saved this table. I learned a lot too, thanks.
I have my great- great grandmothers table it's oval topped... I'm never getting rid of it. Your table is gorgeous...thanks for breathing life back into this Grand Dame!
I hope you are keeping this one. No one will appreciate it as much as you.
It’s going to be a display piece in a local market that is rebuilding after a fire this past fall.
@@salvagedbykscott good to know. Thanks for the information.
wonderful work on bringing this old beauty back to life Katie! Back in the day (60’s and 70’s I used to love feeling the accomplishment of taking something old and beaten up and bringing it back to life- it’s a wonderful feeling and makes one feel very proud! 👌😍
Wow Katie that is beautiful - great job. You have so much patience! My grandparents had a dining room set just like that with the chairs, sideboard and china closet. They lived in a 1769 built house and it fit perfectly in the room. One day the whole set was gone from the room and when my father questioned his elderly parents they said they sold it to a "woman" who came in, saw it and offered them $200 for the whole thing. They did not know her name or anything about her but she said she was a neighbor. We never found out who she was but she stole that from them. Really sad. It was and as your table -just beautiful.
Just, wow! So glad you were able to save that table! And you worked hard to preserve its original essence. Sooo much better than throwing a coat of paint on it! Kudos to a fantastic job!
Katie you've started the year with a bang! I love it!
I did a double take because I have an extremely similar table in my dining room. I rescued mine from my father in laws lake cottage in Northern Maine. The wood was pristine, but nobody would eat at it because the finish was stickier than a toddler with a jar of honey. The finish was also a very dark walnut. Your find came out beautifully!
You do the most thorough work of anyone on you tube flipping furniture! You are a perfectionist! Nice work
Thank you for bringing this beautiful piece back to it's former glory and not painting it. We had a similar table that was destroyed by a hurricane in the early 70's.
Starting off 2023 so strong! 🏆🏆🏆🏆 this is a stunning piece Katie❤
Wonderful job
I think you could make some leaves to fit the table.... but keep them clearly new so that the story of this table contines to grow, especially now you've given it a new chance.
Well done preserving history
Oh, be still my heart! She’s a beauty! Katie I’m soooo very happy that you decided to conquer the hard work n refinish this gorgeous Empire Tiger Oak table. You did an amazing job on it. Must give you kudos on taking the care in solving the crack down by the legs. Great idea you had there. Now she’ll live on another 100 n more years. Also a big thank you for sharing everything you did on her n why.
If you sell this piece I’m sure it’ll go at a good price. Maybe you could get $500.00 or even more. Love it!
♥️♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Love your videos, Katie. No gimmicks, lots of education. I think you're fantastic.
Everytime I look at one of your videos, I am so impressed, inspired, etc. Thank you for being YOU!! Janet
Katie, I have to say you did a fantastic job!! 98% of people now all they can do is paint. It looks amazing. You could probably sell it for a ton if wanted to. Again Beautiful job. Mr. Kim
Omg. I cannot believe the transformation. What a truly beautiful piece of furniture. How could anyone warrant painting it. Well done Katie. 🎉
Stunning. A beautiful piece that will continue to make memories. I love the “not going for perfect” while picking out flecks of paint with dental tools! Your attention to detail is something to aspire to. Seriously- job well done.
Absolutely gorgeous. I shudder when people paint over these pieces. I know sometimes pieces are damaged and you really have a choice. But with age of a piece like this scratches and dents are to be expected. Beautiful.
Stunning. Enjoyed your video. Refreshing to see someone giving correct information and tips. You definitely brought back to life a beautiful treasure.
I followed a short of yours about restoring this table and am stunned by its beauty. It amazes me how someone can see through all that old paint to see what treasure is underneath, I know nothing about restoration, but I love seeing how it's done and the end result. You made an arduous process look easy. It turned out beautiful.
All the walls in my house are a light, soft green. LOVE IT!!
KATIE! ❤ This one got me emotional. I can’t help but imagine what life was like when this table was made. Beautiful result.
Oh my goodness!! You made her so beautiful again!! Thank you for RESTORING her, instead of just painting over her beauty. She is just lovely again, because of you! ♥️
I love, love, love this tiger oak table!! I really enjoy your flips, especially when you can restore an old piece like this one to its former glory!!! 👑It reminds me of my great-grandparents' golden oak table that has been in our family since around the turn of the 20th century. My sister had it refinished, and it is gorgeous!! I don't know how the crown got in my post, but you are the queen of restoration, in my book!!
This restoration is absolutely gorgeous....so happy you were able to save it, scars and all. Your talent undeniable!
Having done some amateurish furniture restoration, I am so impressed with your vast array of skills, especially the dowel stick repairs. Beautiful result!
OMG, this is spectacular! I'm in awe how you transformed this table!!!!!! I hope you kept it for yourself! Truly a one of a kind!
Beautiful job! This lovely table was made between 1890 and 1930 it is American Empire Revival. Original Empire furniture was usually made of Mahogany or Rosewood. Quarter sawn oak furniture came into fashion much later. American Empire Revival furniture is my favorite furniture style especially the sideboards with the beveled mirrors. This style would be perfectly at home in a Craftsman style bungalow.
Wow, so beautiful! Love the tiger oak grain, shows its age wonderfully! Your patience and meticulous craftsmanship truly are what adds to this antique beauty!
Katie I love your work and this is a beautiful example of your abilities. Than you for sharing!
I love your videos. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that you show the full process along with how imperfect these projects can be and how to adapt and pivot to complete the project. In my very limited experience, nothing seems to go according to the original plan. So its great that you show that and your problem solving skills!
So happy to see paint being taken off of furniture and the beautiful wood being revealed! Love the finished table so much!!!
You do such beautiful work Katie. This table is GORGEOUS. God bless your talent and your dedication to saving furniture from landfills. BRAVO!!!
How pretty you made that table again ! And what memories of my grandmothers farmhouse kitchen that table brought back. In the early 1950’s, I would spend summers at my grandparents dairy farm in central WISCONSIN. Three times a day, grandma would set out massive meals. Depending on the time of day they consisted of thickly sliced homemade bread, with huge chunks of fresh butter, plates of sliced cheeses, boxes of cereals, and bowl after bowl of either scrambled eggs, fresh garden vegetables, delicious meat dishes, and plates of cookies/cakes that had been dessert after dinner the night before. In season a special treat was just picked raspberries and cream from grandmas cows.
Everyone was welcome! The table was directly below the floor vent of the bedroom where my sister and I slept. So, after dishes had been done and it was time for bed, we’d quietly sneak out of bed and eavesdrop on the grownup conversations happening at that table below us. They were magical days of simple pleasures. Thanks for saving that special table.
I have seen tables like this in my grandmother's sisters' homes. I am so glad you didn't paint it, it is beautiful in your dining room. I hope you keep it!
How lovely Katie! You found and restored a gem. I think of all the generations of families who sat around this table and now it looks like it did so many years ago. Good job!
OMGosh, I would have had to keep this table for myself. I think your children would love to have this passed down to them in remembrance of you and your life's work.
I just love your attention to detail I didn’t expect the dowel approach to the cracked base - I learn so much here Katie
So glad you restored her to her original beauty. 😍
🙏
This is absolutely beautiful! This is a lifetime table 😍
I love seeing the before and then after and you let us get a good look. This is a beautifully restored piece and I love it, imperfections & all. It looks strong now and I think it’s happy again.

Definitely a labour of love. Super to think this old forgotten gem fell into the right hands. Yours Katie.
Oh my goodness!!!! How proud you must be. What a beautiful antique you have uncovered. Your dinning room is so lovely. I love the pictures on your walls also! Great job young lady!!!!!!!
It looks stunning. Sometimes, the little imperfections make it even more lovely.
Beautiful work, as always, Katie. Your eye for saving furniture with the right paint and hardware is always spot on, but it's nice to see a repair and restoration job turn out so well.
I love the more serious vibe. Thank you very much. What spectacular results with the quartersawn oak, well done.
I think I can hear this beautiful table purring with relief and happiness 💖💕🇨🇦 What a great work, Katie. Well done. 💖💕
The wood is sooooooooo beautiful and so is the table. So glad u do this. Ppl like u educate and inspire just by doing what u do!!!
I hope you keep this for your own home - it’s gorgeous!
Thank you for saving such a beautiful table. I love painted furniture when it's needed, but this table is stunning. Thank you for showing us how it can be done. As someone who is learning, I appreciate it.
What a beautiful piece! Great job of restoring it Katie.
Wow!! So glad you brought back this gorgeous table. Fantastic job!
Wow, restoring that beautiful table was such hard work. You did such a wonderful job. 🥰 Not only was the table beautiful, but I loved the artwork in your home where you staged the newly finished table.
Love, love, love. So beautiful. Usually you make modern pieces out of old. Love that you did a restoration. Sending ☀️ sun from Israel
I love that you gave this table a new, gorgeous life. 🧡 I absolutely love the warmth of the piece and how warm it makes the room you stayed it in. Truly stunning work, Katie!!
Wolf Whistle! this is why you are one of my favorite furniture gurus!
Beautiful!!, so nice to see someone who appreciates the beauty of antique oak furniture. I have been a collector my whole life. Great job!
