  • The Yukon 800 Mile Marathon dates back 47 years and is a 2-day high speed riverboat race. The run on the Tanana and Yukon Rivers travels through hundreds of miles of vast Alaskan wilderness. It is billed as the longest, roughest and toughest speed boat race in the world.
    This video is the Yukon 800 as seen from the village of Tanana. 800 miles of physically taxing and dangerous running at speeds between 50 and over 70 miles per hour. Many racers live in or have ties to the villages along the race route. These men and women put their heart and souls and often their last dime into getting the boats and motors ready to race each year.
    Tanana's Joey Zuray and Samantha Wright have their boat entered and are Tanana's favorite this year. Just finishing is considered an accomplishment with many years half or more of the boats entering not finishing. This was filmed on the first day of the race. The second day after having his lower unit almost fall off and lashing and wiring it back on Joe Zuray came in 1 hour and in 3rd place behind 1st place Floyd Huntington the 2018 winner. It was a good day. Stan Zuray

    Thank you for the video on the race Stan. Much respect for those that take the time and money to do these kind of races. It's a testament to the lifestyle and hard working attitude almost all northerners have for their communities. It's heart warming to see Joe and Sam take part in the race. I'm sure they had an interesting time with the breakdown, if not for that they may have been in first place. Thanks again for all you do to bring us your videos on the life style you have and so graciously share. Great production man hope to see more soon. Take care and keep smiling sir!

    I'm an Alaskan refugee, our family fled back in '73 to "retire", but we had too many brands in the fire, Dad finally said no more in 1990 with the 3 weeks of 60 below freezing temps in Anchorage, but I loved watching this race more than the Iditarod.
    Back when, the hulls were aluminum or fiberglass with aluminum reinforcement, but I don't know if they're using carbon composite now or not. And these outboards, from the size, I wouldn't say much more than 35 horse, but how much wrenching/$$$ goes into them? Are we talking tuned ports for intake and exhaust, ground heads, domed ground pistons vs cast iron, are they running premium or 110 low-lead avgas? Custom carb/jets for intake?
    I'm not sure what you meant by chopper prop, I'm guessing at around 8 minutes that looks like a pretty steep bite for an outboard, close to if not 45 degree overall, but if you hold half of a prop out of the water, it's losing 50% of it's thrust. The lower half of the outboard being submerged would make sense, but not half of the prop itself.
    Sorry for the late post, it's been even longer for me with this sport. Btw, anyone know where I can score pint jars of fireweed jelly? I've got lower 48er's begging for it.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад

      My son Joe is really into his race boat. He had to get race committee okay to race his first Yukon 800 as he was under 18. Youngest captain of a boat to ever race in the 800. Boats are all plywood and screws and nails and wood glue. Pretty primitive in this day of high tech epoxies and carbon fibers. Motors are all stock blocks (required) and limited to 50 hp at the prop so the old 50 Mercury at the driveshaft is not allowed. Props do run out of the water and the lower unit is all redone and the water intake is on the underside of the front of the gear case. It's a love to these guys that race and they often spend all their disposable (and more) for a year on their race.

I see chat and notifications and private mesages and I feel bad I can't respond. Got my own little limited world just keeping up with reading/liking peoples posts and commenting on questions asked - and the occasional video or pictures on Facebook etc. .

    Are these “stock” boats, or do the participants have to build the boats themselves. Perhaps a future video could have joey explaining the boat, as I could not tell what you meant by “Upper & Lower” unit, I saw only one propeller.

      I know and that video it was a mistake but did not want to not put it on. Sometimes a computer is much more loud than a phone but not sure what you're using. Some of my old videos are degraded VCR ones but again the options were no video as I have already increased sound during the editing. To just get better at doing it is the secret.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад

      Limit is 50 hp at the prop shaft. Said to be the fastest boats per horsepower in the world. That lightness is what makes them so physically hard to handle especially for 400 miles 2 days in a row. Any small water roughness transmits to a situation in which a mellow comfortable ride is not to be had. That and dodging logs.

    Thinking out loud here... Some videos of hunting and trapping this winter would be awesome. Now that Tanana is loved by millions you don't need a TV channel to keep the "Yukon People" story out there. One of those chest-mounted GoPro cameras might come in handy. Example: Before Joey goes hunting or trapping strap the chest-mount camera on him. When he gets back he gives you the camera and you edit down to maybe 10-15 minutes of prime video. Do the same with Charlie and others...
    PS: Where can I buy one of those Tanana Fire Department t-shirts? I would also like to buy a fur hat and mittens made by the Tanana ladies. The Tanana/Zuray online store could be very helpful to other villagers.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад

      Nobody is making the Tanana Fire shirts anymore. I never did it. Last person was one of the cameramen on the show but he sold all his equipment. Go to Courtney's Facebook page for fur products etc.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  3 года назад

      Believe these boats are an extention of the long flat bottom boats used with low horsepower outboards all up and down the Yukon years back. It was not that long ago so that history is hardly ancient or contested. The race is still firmly in the hands of the native community from what I see although other ethnic race people are involved and welcomed. As with the dog teams that raced it was originally people gathereing and tuning their boats and dogs up to see could be the fastest after a hard season of fishing or trapping.
