  • Every few days a new dog pot of fish is cooked during the summer. Whole fish are boiled till they fall apart and then cooled down in cold mountain water. This is what the dogs eat every day along with a small amount of dried fish scraps from the cutting tables. Healthier than most people in the America eat. No chemicals, preservatives or sugar. Enjoy, Stan

      My guess is no. With the changes in TV (more shows - less TV viewer) it is way to expensive to film the way it was done here. The industry is moving more and more towards prearranged stories and ones done in a single setting like warehouses or studios to save time and money. That's my take on it.

    How long can you hang the salmon? Can we leave it outside in our drying house over the winter?

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  2 года назад

      In the 1970's when I came to Alaska many had no freezers so dried fish was dried well and hung high bundled in burlap in the smokehouses or caches away from animals for the winter months. Nowadays most put them in freezers when dried or semi dried as it preserves that fresh "succulent" taste better. Our winters hardly ever see above freezing temps though. Like your new channel

    • @jpdunamislodge

      @@stanzuray Thank you very much for responding. Been a fan of Yukon Men since day one. Were down on the Peninsula. This will be our 5th winter. Looking to dry some fish for our Golden Retriever. Our freezers are full of people food but it Sounds like we could still hang, dry; and wrap some fish old school to make some batches of dog food over the winter. I’m supposing that I will have to rehydrate and cook long enough to dissolve the bones.

    • @jpdunamislodge
      @jpdunamislodge 2 года назад +2

      I will cut them like you do but remove the heads along with the back bones. Going to gently remove the ribs and then slice across closer together (you said like people food) then hang. We built a big (not as big as yours!) smoke house / drying house last year. May eliminate the bone issue and may speed up the cooking process. Looking r
      To add vegetables.

    • @jpdunamislodge
      @jpdunamislodge 2 года назад +1

      How long do we need to hang / dry? I can get another freezer. Do we need to seal them or just put them in the freezer whole?

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  2 года назад

      Just to be real clear - This answer is for dried dog food and I have another video on the channel on how to cut them. It's a lot different than how the people food is handled. We never put dog food in the freezer. It hangs where it was hung right after being cut to dry until it is thoroughly dried and then it's stored like that all winter. Sometimes it is bunched up some to save space on the outside dog racks. It is never put in a smokehouse ever. Smokehouses here are for people food. Hope this clears things up.

I will say that the editing stage (which I think is the hardest part to get right) seems to well under way with a light at the end of the tunnel. In alot of rural Alaska internet is available but slow. Will not stream say RUclips videos without interruptions. In bush Alaska people use HughesNet satellite dish and it's great for messaging and email but at 250 MB limit a day is very limited and slow. Around the cities it's much faster and better if you pay the price - plenty good for business sites.
      I know of Marty and he's a very respected trapper around Fairbanks but never met him

      Stan Zuray thanks for the answer! How do you upload your videos? Get on FB? Satellite internet? That must take forever! I can download movies in a couple minutes here. Adequate internet is my only worry about moving up there since I have an e-commerce business.
      I grew up in a small mountain town called Paradise, Ca. (It just burned down last year) but have been in San Francisco since I was 18 (a kid wanted to experience the city) Now I’m 36 and want to move back to the mountains but to Alaska this time. I need to get back to the woods if you know what I mean. I want a garden, fruit orchard, and some chickens, etc. Live off the land as much as possible but still have running water, power, internet and septic. But I don’t wanna see neighbors after living in a city for so long I need a break from that! 😉 I don’t know if that even exists up there. I’ve been researching the Kenai Penn. Homer, Anchor Point. Not as harsh as your area! I don’t know if I’m that tough to live in the interior by myself yet haha. Just need to research more on the internet connections up there and then come visit a few time before I pick a spot.
      I watched a NatGeo doc on the Collins twins trapper girls. They are tough! Reminds me of you!
      Can’t wait for the Doc! Hopefully you’ll upload it to YT.
      ✌️stay warm

      At fish camp I got HughesNet and once you get it uploading it's only counting the download MB - upload is free. It takes about 12 to 24 hrs to upload a 1 GB video. In the village of Tanana where I am in winter it's a microwave into town and cable to the houses and a 1 GB video takes about 3 to 6 hrs. and we get 40 GB a month. You are correct to be thinking more south than here if you want to live off gardens more. Good luck.

    I was telling my friend at work about tossing some raw scraps of coho to my huskies and he said watch out for "salmon poisoning" and sent me a link. I was like wow what! It was true and sad to see there is such thing.

    • @mindofencryption
      @mindofencryption 4 года назад +1

      @Kevin R I only posted it to let people know because most don't, after all eating raw salmon by humans is normal, so you wouldn't think dogs would be affected.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  4 года назад +2

      Send that lin k if you still got it. The vets up here have described one issue with raw salmon like this. There are enzymes in raw fish thatdestroy the vitamin B in a dogs system. Repaeted feeding of raw fish will eventually kill the dog. Coking or better rotting somewhat destoys that enzyme. Supposidly greenland huskies have evolved the ability to digest raw fish okay. Wolves that walk the beaches up here are eating the most rotten salmon they can find instead of a freshly washed up spawned out salmon.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  4 года назад

      That is my guess but as the show was never officially cancelled it could come back as some have after years of absence. The economics of todays TV world with so many more shows and less people watching TV make it hard for a costly show in an isolated village to be possible.
