We need more Steves in the world. Here's to many more years of your life.
There's only ONE Steve Vai, no matter how many Steves we want in the world!!!! :D
He’ll never get old in my eyes he’s always going to be the best in the books to😂🤘🏼
@BAZ INGA Really? I hadn't noticed.
Fucker looks good...looks like 45ish to me
His stage performance with whitesnake was a boiler.....its crazy to match that god with him now....🤘the only god that I have seen...
And on and guitar we r looking for buried treasure : -D ; -D
Steve's not only a fine musician, but also a fine human being. Love the part at the end with his wife. Such a nice couple. May we have you around for many years to come Steve. You're a true artist, in every sense of the word. People like you make the world a better place.
I totally agree. He's been my guitar hero since Eat'em and Smile.
Exactly!
Bravo....echoed my thoughts precisely. I was thinking at the end of it, just how blessed we are in this day and age to have such access to some of the heroes we could only connect with through a magazine or VHS tape back in the day, and just extrapolate from that what the person was like and almost use our imaginations to fill in the massive gaps. Today we have this ability to pretty much converse with them. They're just on the other side of the screen. Cherish every day and every note Steve plays, as we are all not around forever. Happy Birthday Steve. You're a living treasure.
I couldn’t agree more with you!! Steve is an inspiring human being!! I saw him in a concert in Spain just yesterday and he was incredible in every sense of the word.
So well said, Bravo!
How can you not love Steve? 🙏
You are an inspiration Steve and always will be. Thank you.
Every guitar player: 'I need a challenge..' *Adds whammy bar*
Steve vai: 'I need a challenge..' *Removes whammy bar*
he literally said success needs a challenge, and that challenge wasn't that great of a challenge for him
He's whammy incorporated INC.
ADDS WHAMMY, REMOVES WHAMMY ADDS INTERESTING JOINT DETACH FOR INTERESTING MULTI BEND CHORDINGS! STEPPING OUT OF THE BOX ON A CONSTANT!
Kris fjord check my fretboard invention. Adds challenge of not being able to do full bends and focus on FretCorner Bend technique. I think it so much more radically different sound wise than what Steve is doing as far as multi interval FretCorner bends as I show. His is way harder. It’s not a competition just side by side analysis. Love Steve’s style and ability.
I hate being like “look At me check me out I re invented guitar” yet if I don’t promote it I’ll never inspire anyone sell any guitars or evolve music as there’s 10 billion guitarists yet I’m the 1st to build this fretboard
Happy Bday Steve! ❤️ You look 20 years younger!!
Happy Birthday Steve!!!! It is great being able to see this human side of you (not that I am saying you're an alien or anything.)
He's definitely an alien he is not of this Earth as Joe satriani once put it
Alien? He looks and sounds more human than the human. Loved listening and watching. Too old? You look and sound better than ever. This is what you were born to be and do. Happy birthday and yes keep it fresh. 60 70 80 90 100+++
Steve had it at 18 years old. At Berklee in 1979, he was in a 4 piece band. With Victor Bailey on bass. They warmed up for guitarist Lauren Lehman's band. Lauren could play too. Steve felt like Lauren ran him off the stage. He had his head down, he felt bad. I told Steve back then that he was special. He had Jimi Hendrix type sounds with this jazz type feel it was different. After the show, I saw Steve standing in telephone booth on Boylston Street. I knocked on the door he stepped out said he felt bad cuz Lauren had did him on stage. He said, he didn't have to worry about it, and then he said these words in November I'm going to California to play with Frank Zappa. We were young, all of us had a story but I believed him. I asked Steve what was he going to do for an amp when he got there. He said I hope Frank will let me use one of his. After that semester at Berkeley I left, he left. next time I saw him he was on the cover of guitar player magazine and now he's made History!
@@anthonyjames2096 Dude.... he's standing right here. 🙂
Woodward English great comment, LOL.
STEVE VAI!!!!! THE ULTIMATE GREATEST GUITARIST IN THE UNIVERSE.....SO DOWN TO EARTH BUT MONSTER OF GUITAR PLAYING!!!
A gentleman 60 years old still can play so well and innovating.
Happy birthday Steve Vai the master
Congratulations Steve, I have so much to say and ask , I'd never get it in here..
So may God bless you.
My favourite Vai solo.... He was doing a Zappa plays Zappa show in Sydney Australia. He stepped out to do a solo and a string broke instantly. If you've had experience with floating bridges, you'll know that one string snapping will throw all your strings way out of tune! Anyway, he had to do the solo and it was one of the best guitar solo experiences of my life... Probably because I knew what he was up against. And he whammied his way through and it was so good. Completely bizarre and unlike anything he would do while in tune but it was still all him, playing off his skills. The extreme example of limitations and boundaries. Great memory!
I have the biggest smile on my face, the delight in Steve’s voice when he sees Pia, the best rock couple ever, such a wonderful cake! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! X X
She actually played Bass in the 80s band Vixen!
Yes, they are such a wonderful couple after all these years. Just beautiful.
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻🎻🌹
hey grandpa, please keep healthy. you've been my life soundtrack (along with satch) for over 25 years. thank you for sharing your wild harmony with us all these years. we'll always love you.
I LOVE STEVE VAI!!!! HE'S THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER.....
Steve’s like a deep chasm that just gets deeper.beautiful.
It has been a perfect playing for me having a lovely and awesome fan like you, thanks for your love,I have you mostly to be thankful for🎸🌹🎸
Steve, you're a legend
That's the problem with writing technically nearly-impossible riffs... 6 months later, you can't even play it yourself! haha But it was sweet in that recording, tho.
What's up TruthSurge. Just watched you today jamming to Dixie Highway. Sounded great.
Go to the hospital to treat your head.
I feel like that's the awesomeness of it, you break your limits and, as he say, inspire others, and with that, inspire yourself. I love making music/solos that even I have a hard time trying to get it through, because I'm studying something and it is something mine, in the end i build up my technic and created something (also love to learn other songs, but creating songs is amazingly awesome)
Don't remind me!
Happy birthday Steve......WOW, where has all the time gone!
What a lovely wife Steve. I shed some tears I love you man.
I started to play guitar 3 years ago when I was 35 years old. For some reason, It was so late I pick up the guitar. I am a slow learner but I will contintue, because I love it. It was Steve's music alawys remind me to practice harder and harder. Thank you for creating so good music, Steve.
Never stop, even when you get frustrated. I started at 12 and I'm 52 now. It's a lifelong pursuit of which you never stop learning. each day brings something new and pushes you forward. Making music is a gift.
Just enjoy it
i feel your pain, i started when i was 16 1987 played for 2 months quit until 1991, feeling Guilty & Dumb on why did i wait so long.
Been playing since but still aint really Good.
you are great and will always be great Vai
My birthday is also in June, was lucky to get a Ibanez uv77 for it.
Congrats 🌟
64 back on the 3rd 🖖
A great honor and privilege to share this experience truly one of kind..
No wonder you are the God of guitar...! Happy Birthday Mr. Vai..... stay alive for another 100 years and entertain us....!!!!!!
That smile on your face and a lil pause you took right when she wakes in with your birthday cake :-)
You are very lucky to have such a loving & caring wife.
Belated Happy Birthday to you & god bless.
Such a humble dude. He said this was a challenge , hes freekin knocking this out of the park.
30:16 - 30:45 is both modest ("I'm human") and a testament to the drive behind a genius
Happy Birthday Steve...Thanks for getting me into playing the guitar...Blessings
I love how Steve always uses technique in the service of melody. Using the technique to execute the melodic flow.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR VAI!!! Maybe this will be the year that you’ll beat Ralph macchio in a guitar battle
NEVER !! 😉
Ralph Maccio (RY COODER on slide-guitar)
Jack Butler
As much as i loved the trick bag when I was young. Its really not that tough. Vai could have destroyed that caprice
Yngsatchvai which makes sense seeing as he is the one that actually played it...
Hey Steve, happy bday. You were the one person that made me want to pick up a guitar after hearing Passion and Warfare many years ago. I bought your transcribed book of that album as a young guitarist with massive hopes. So fast forward, I ran a guitar school in Australia for 20 years and got the privilege to teach some of your songs to my advanced students. So thank you for setting the bar so high and allowing us mere mortals to strive to your standard. A life time of mine admiring your music and career. Thanks so much Troy.
Steve, just so you know, you'll like this story! When I first heard of you, it was subliminal. It was 1982 and I was in Rexburg, Idaho. I was attending BYU Idaho as an out-of-water Mormon Freshman from Houston, Texas. My best buddy in the dorm was also my Karate and Jujitsu mentor at the gym when we weren't studying. I just remember one night we were in his Triumph TR-7 driving past a park in the snow and he put in a Frank Zappa cassette. And he said, "You gotta hear this, you'll love it. It's called "Don't Fool Yourself Girl, It's Going In The Poop Shoot."," And then he showed me this song and parts of the album and I was blown away. It was great, but I was conflicted because it wasn't 4 on the floor rock. He told, "Listen to this young kid that plays guitar for him, Steve Vai, He's Amazing. You're going to hear a lot more from him in the future." I was amazed, I was a classical guitarist from 5 years old and I knew it was good, it just wasn't my kind of music. He told me to watch out for you and you would be famous. I didn't even connect it when you came out with Dave Roth. I just realized this story about 3 months ago! It's the same guy on Guitar!!!!!
Would love to hear Steve`s take on this ?
He’ll never read it
This is a great story. I grew up on vai, in the uk
Bravo Steve Vai....Happy Bday , The best rock Guitar since 1998 for me...
Happy Birthday Steeve Vai !!! Have a wonderful day, full of Life, Love, peace of mind , happiness and that God blogs you, ever! You are a truly humble soul and gentleman guy!
Greetings frm Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"This isn't just a dream!!!" Happy birthday Steve
Felicidades Steve Vai!!! Tienes una hermosa familia!!!
This kid will become popular one day
Happy Birthday Stevie. You have amazing talent. Best wishes. I turn 60 in August. Love, peace ✌️ and harmony
Happy Birthday Mr. Vai.
From Chile, Villarrica.
Great music Steve.
Bye.
I worked with a chef who was into Frank Zappa, he knew I was into instrumental guitar, I was a guitar player, and he gave me a cassette tape he had recorded, by this guy Steve Vai, it was 1990, and the tape was a recording of Passion and Warfare. We used to blast it out in the restaurant before we opened, we had a big pair of wharfedales above the bar. Cheers Ian.
Fuck me,worked with tons of Chefs..none of which were Zappa fans-might have done some of them good too!
congratulations and blessings steve,, i havent played since lockdown,,had to sell guitars to get through it, and my amp just packed in,, im encouraged to play again, as ive watched youre videos throughout the lock down, thankyou Steve,
That little bit, where Steve frets a chord on the wrist of his right hand. Such a unifying moment, the *delicacy" for all guitar spirits out there
Steve Vai you are a massive inspiration for me. Never Stop❤️
Can I just say as a Gen X guitarist born in 76 watching Crossroads and playing since the age of 9...the fact I am watching Master Vai so intimately absolutely floors me. I was sitting here in tears not too long ago, composed now..what a glorious world we live in. Steve fking Vai is in 1080p speaking to us and teaching us and showing his age and follies..it's just so damn surreal.
All I can say to anyone who doesn't understand the gravity of what you are watching: Mozart and Beethoven would be jealous of this man. I have every single Guitar for the Practicing Musician, Guitar Player and Guitar World magazine from the early 80's through the late 90s...every song you have ever wanted to play, transcribed perfectly (mostly by Wolf Marshall and Andy Aledort)..anyway..
Steve's playing has always been, without question, the most challenging ever in my 35years of playing.
The best musicians on earth are the most selfless. I still can't believe Vai is speaking to us right now...it's fkn Steve Vai!!!
You kids without MTV..Imagine RUclips or anything like it never existed. *ever*
You would have to pay $49.99 to see a 1hr video of anything other than MTV showing bands lip-syncing through videos playing to the album backing tracks...
ZERO ENGAGEMENT.
Even hearing Vai's voice..or your favorite musicians voice..speaking voice..is such a shock..it was IMPOSSIBLE to hear even when Nirvana came out, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains..
These were pre-internet bands.
TL;DR
The fact Steve Vai is talking to us all and sharing his deepest secrets for free means the world is awesome.
I could listen to Steve Vai's music and Steve Vai talk about music all day and all night long. You will always be my favorite guitar player and inspiration, Steve! :)
Happy birthday! You're one of the most inspiring persons to me. Enjoy the 60s 👍
Your music transformed my life since I was only 14 years old. 36 now and still so grateful for your immense contribution to the world of music Steve. Happy Birthday once again. They used to come down on you, cause you know how to play. Hey, @&$& ?!$. Flexible leftovers quote
Happy late bday Steve. .60 wow u still look .great Steve your gutair work is amazing. Your music and your gutair .playing has kept me moving forward in my life it's very heart felt .and soul. Pulling the moon and I. I listing to a lot.lots. ... Cheers. Steve via...
Belated Happy Birthday Steve. Have been a fan for many years. Total respect for you, not just as a musician, i love seeing who you have become, such a beautiful person. Also a consumate master of the guitar. That first delicacy sounds vaguely Hawaiian to me, maybe a bit of western swing in there also which one might not expect from Steve Vai. Great to hear that you are felling so amazing at 60. with love and appreciation, from Salt Spring Island, BC.
"I want to live inside this chord." Never heard that before. Awesome. I agree.
You know, it's when they look you in the eyes and they say......HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!
And of course, they bake you a kickass cake.
How can Steve Vai be 60! I remember seeing him in Dave Lee Roth’s band 33 years ago. Seems like yesterday. My first introduction to Steve Vai was a flimsy free disc that came with Guitar Player magazine. It was a promotional piece for Carvin I think. There was a track called Blue Powder that eventually found it’s way on to the “Passion and Warfare” record. Well that little flimsy disc made quite an impression on me at the time. As a teenage guitar playing fanatic I’d never heard anything like it. It was innovative, interesting, inventive and sonically mesmerising. Compared to the blues based rock guitar that was prevalent at that time, it stood out to me as something really special. I’d never heard of this guy before, had no idea what he looked like and I wondered even how his name was pronounced. I knew one thing for sure though: he was going to be one of the most important and influential electric guitar players in history. Since then, literally millions of guitar players all over the world have copied his stylistic hallmarks. He remains untouchable in terms of inventiveness and his ability create new and interesting music continues unabated. Bravo Steve congratulations on your 60th Birthday!
Happy birthday Steve , I hope you and your family are well all things considered with the lock down . You look really well , keep on rocking and making beautiful music .
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR LEGEND!!! 3 months later 😬💙
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE GOAT OF ALL GOATS 🐐 🔥🔥
Happy happy birthday Steve, that lady is your best gift.
You are the only One
Happy belated birthday.Steve!!! May God bless you always along with your family and friends!!! You are my favorite guitarist in the whole world!!!!
Steve 60, excellent. Met you in College 1979 Berklee. I was 17, you were 18. I was the 1st person you told you were headed to play with Mr. Frank Zappa. Remember Loren Leeman guitarist. He played the white Les Paul. At that time you were playing a white fender Stratocaster with the rubber band holding the bar on because your screws were stripped. You showed me that. Peace to you and congratulation on turning 60. I'll be 60 this coming July, looking forward to it. "Bass player"
His wife must feel incredibly lucky to have a husband as good looking as Steve!
I love that he called Strat a "limitation". It really goes to show how it can benefit you as a player when you have every single piece of gear made to your specifications. I wish I could someday have a guitar which is as comfortable to play as Jem is for Steve.
A strat a limitation? Get real! Go tell that to Gary Moore, David Gilmour, and any blues dive guitarist that can evoke more emotion out of a strat in a night than Steve has his entire career.
I have a couple of strat partscasters, a Contreras N3, and a two Kiesel's -- for me, time is the limit: I can't parse out 9 hours to play most days - and for over ten years didn't want to. If you can't do a Kiesel now, I strongly recommend taking a Squire (even a used one dirt cheap -- check Reverb or GC used gear), and getting a neck from USA Customs -- or if you want the Fender licensed headstock, go with a Warmoth. You don't need it finished or anything -- get some oil, or wipe-on poly from Lowe's. I'd recommend getting one with a nut width that works with a pre-cut graph-tech to keep things simple -- you'll be in the ballpark, and if you take it to a really good luthier, you'll be in the ballpark of a high-dollar guitar. You don't need to spend a ton right away -- do the pickups later. I you could make it really good for under $400. That said, I've been a fan of Steve, and Ibanez for a long, long time -- but my Kiesel's are a class above everything else -- if you can swing it, get one.
My 11yr old daughter saw you in crossroads for the first time yesterday she thought you were scary but she said you sure can play the guitar. Respect
Happy Birthday big man from bonnie Scotland! Keep on rockin' Old rockers never get old we just get rockin' chairs. I love your music so much and it's been a great comfort to me just want to say thank you for that.
Hero of mine from a very early age. First saw him on TV in 1992 (Seville Expo), incredible
Corona, riots.... and Steve without a whammy... my God!!!the end is here.
LOL!! :)
I guess he finally whammied his last bar..
in the book of revelation John talks about whammy bars

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Steve. Abraços do Brasil!
Every time I see and hear Steve Vai, he is getting better and more amazing. Never stopped in time. This is immensely inspiring. Really thank you very much mr. Steve !!!!
Steve is on his highest life path and still growing, teaching, and learning. So expressive in both word and in music. He's inspirational on so many levels.
1:09 Marty Schwartz the RUclips guitar teacher?! He is 60?! This must be another Marty, cause the RUclips Marty looks like 43 or something ^^
I thought the exact same thing 😂
@@iamhear_officially So did I
I know, huh? I think we need a clarification on this.
Long live Steve Vai ...and YES: virtuosity, speed and "shred" should be there too. The ones who say it shouldn't is just because they cannot execute it.
Yes! I'm sick of people who say shred has no "feeling." Like you said, people that can't shred despise people who can.
the speech of the ones who didn't practice enough ;)
Shred can have feeling, yeah, but you must agree that some people just wanna play fast without putting any feel in.
@@Jsssddfgffghshdhdhusjsjd : That's true too. I've watched this whole thing appear back in the day as a response to "shredding becoming popular in the 80's. A lot of the fans started thinking that if you couldn't shred, then you weren't good. Witch is absurd at best. For one thing, slow tempos are far far harder to nail, and I'd also point out that players like Gilmour, BB KIng, SRV and many others were just as good as any shredder but in a different way.
Then came the 90's and the fans decided that if you even played guitar solos you sucked. But all the great shredders all played with a lot of feeling too, and most of the emphasis is on rhythm as well for all the best players.
It's all just bullshit though from either side. Play what *you* feel, because that's your truth. And the one thing that all art has in common, be it painting, writing, music, sculpture, poetry, etc, is people respond most to when the artist is speaking their own truth.
When you have a lot of birthdays, people call you ‘old.’ When a guitar has a lot of birthdays, people call it vintage. Happy birthday to a truly vintage person!
That's a compliment... I think ;)
Happy Birthday Steve...I got to shake your hand when you played in Pittsburgh in the late 80’s...May God grant you many more years of joy as you’ve brought joy to the world of music
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE, MAY YOU WRITE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC FOR 60 MORE YEARS !!
Who may dislike this? This is priceless! Happy Birthday Steve!!!🎂🎂🎂
RE: 13:03 Dude, that's what I've always loved about your playing...it's so unconventional...you come up with the coolest "weird shit"...I love it. I love this channel and seeing the human side of you. Thank you for sharing, Steve! Merry Christmas...
Steve, you need to send this song to Rick Beato so he can break it down in one of his 'What Makes This Song Great' episodes. I'd love to hear him have a go at it and dissect it from his music teacher point of view - such a fresh new song like this.
exn641US but Steve already broke it down himself 😉
Great idea .... pick a song Steve and send it to Rick, please ... and then maybe a follow episode by you, explaining it from your perspective and sharing some of the special moments during both composition and recording /performance.
Happy belated Birthday Steve! Same age here and feeling great. 60 is the new 40. Keep being you and we will keep being us.
Wow, Amazing Mr Vai you are one of the greatest guitar player, not doubt about it, greetings from Tampa Bay, Florida!!
13:01 This is where Eugene puts his mojo back into his pocket, hands Willy a dustpan and starts sweeping up around the club.
I like the idea of the Jem Strat. Put a Wudtone CP vintage 50S tremolo unit on it with Highwood Saddles and Raw Vintage Springs.
Steve has taken the electric guitar where no guitarist has gone before.
Carlos Santana says : We make the ugliest faces to express the most beautiful music !!
jeff's Guitars & Gear Garage - Carlos sold out and lost his tone.
I love that thought it's true only when you get to that stage are you truly playing from the heart. Well said.
Freebird of reason ~ I'm a big Carlos fan. And I'm glad he's getting the recognition he deserves while he's alive to enjoy it. He's definitely earned it.
But you lose that edge when you are no longer hungry.
It's like what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted.
Happy Birthday Mr.Steve Vai...wishing you all the best in life and to your music
Congratulations on your 60th birthday and this personable woman by your side.
This is why Frank Zappa gave him the job of playing "impossible guitar parts."
15:41 i see Steve will start his gaming channel...
Lol Nice... must he needs to find out who’s using the mouse first. Dude is best guitar player alive in my book but probably has no clue how to use a computer. And thats fine by me
Joint shifting makes it sound like the chords are being pulled apart and steve’s catching them and putting them together in mid air.
sounds like zz top fool for your stockings intro
anthony barreto haha that’s an awesome way of thinking of it..!
What a GREAT DUDE. WE ALL LOVE IT EVERY SINGLE TIME U PICK IT UP STEVE. LIKE UR STYLE
One of the things that strike me most about mister Vai, is how loyal he is. He always mentions friends from childhood who are still friends to this day, speaks about his tutor Joe Satch as if it was yesterday, some of his staff and collaborators are from way back, collaboration with Ibanez, etc... but for me the cream on the top of the cake must be what, a hat from 1980-something! If that ain't nuts!
You can see why he named his latest guitars after his wife.
Again, Happy Birthday 🥳
Most sincerely it sounds perfect. I am no expert but . Excellent
Thank you and looking forward to it
Enjoy looks delicious
Hello Pia nice cake
He never did drugs so should live a long life in my opinion and I'm glad.
Lol uhh if you think that’s all it takes to qualify someone to have a healthy life you are sorely mistaken.
@@MetalliBucket lol. Its certainly a does mean a lot with many rock musicians. Look at all the great musicians and artists who have overdosed or been who have been addicted to drugs. It destroyed so many. It has got to a lot with the health of musicians. Not just the greats but many locals artists around me are stuck in addiction. Its horrible.
"Vai-o-caster"
And it's a gem of a guitar 😂😂
Happy Birthday!!!
Here's to 60 years, what would life be like without Steve Vai?
Thanks for being a kind soul to the world, cheers!!!
